PlayStation 4 Will Launch In Japan On February 22, 2014, Comes With Knack

By Spencer . September 8, 2013 . 11:52pm

imageSony announced February 22, 2014 as the release date for PlayStation 4 in Japan. The console will be sold for 39,980 yen or 43,980 yen with the PlayStation Camera. At launch, the system will be sold as a First Limited Pack which includes a code to download Knack and an extended warranty. The First Limited Edition will be the same price. The Knack download code bundle is exclusive to Japan.

Part of the reason why the console’s launch was delayed was to make sure there will be games ready for the Japanese market.

This is a surprise, I honestly expected a December release date, not a 2014 FEBRUARY release date. The argument they made -regarding waiting for Japanese games- is understandable… but still a bit strange.

Any way, no JRPG for the PS4 any time soon… that’s how I read it :-(

      Good point.
      I won’t be getting a PS4 until there’s a JRPG that I like. or some other game.

  • Crazy_O

I already preordered mine, hell I don’t care if there will be only a few games. How many times in your life can you experience a fresh Playstation console launch, it’s rarer than the Olympcs or the World Cup. I want to be a part of it and it’s worth the price in my mind.

But I know everyone has a different opinion, but I’m perfectly happy with experiencing a console launch.

So the west is getting it first? Isn’t that unusual? I know Games usually get here second, not sure about consoles.

    • British_Otaku

As far as the West getting consoles first, North America got the Wii and Wii U first, but with the entire PlayStation line up to date, Japan has usually got it early.

I’m mostly surprised that Sony (a Japanese company) are going to miss that ideal close to Christmas launch for Japan. It probably doesn’t mean that much in the long run, aside from giving the Wii U even more room to breath as the PS3 will probably have the last significant Christmas in Japan.

The Xbox One is probably going to be later and I don’t see it taking Japan by storm if it was earlier. Japan is 3DSland regardless. :P

Do note that xmas isn’t as a big a deal in japan. Most people there are Shinto or Buddist. Xmas is mostly a romantic holdiay to go out on dates, not a religous thing.

        • British_Otaku

Yeah, I remember that detail of Christmas being romantic and New Years being a family thing from Detective Conan and some other stuff.

However, there are a few commercials aimed at Japan with a Christmas theme featuring Segata Sanshiro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dpif6GBAv4 + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eYPbXg3QAo ) and SEGA also chose to release Christmas NiGHTS (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Christmasnights.jpg) with a Christmas bundle with Saturn.

I still see the end of year period bringing in sales and some signs that Christmas may have an impact even if people don’t practice Christianity. It’s a commercial thing.

          • Time Sage

I never said it wasn’t big. I just said AS big. I remember watching Dreaming Moon, a recording of a promo event from Sailor Moon’s orginal run, with the voice actresses singing and stuff live. The theater is all decked out in xmas stuff and peoeple are dressed up as santa in the audiance. And yes, Xmas NiGHTS

          • British_Otaku

Fair enough, it was because of you ending your post with the words “not a religous thing”, that I went on to find stuff indicating that religion wasn’t a factor and that Christmas has some presence regardless. :/

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

It’s because the PS4 was developed by Mark Cerny, he’s an American. Since it’s basically his love-child it makes sense that it would release here first.

Oo extended Warrenty? I remember a system that did that. Original batch of 360s because of the RROD! :P Curious…

  • Ric Vazquez

February 2014 for Japan? Hmmm, this smells like they are using us in the west like beta testers/guinea pics for PS4 defects when it comes out and then getting a defectless PS4 for Japan LOL

  • artemisthemp

Not really a big issue as Sony pretty must have 0 Competition in Japan
