Sony Summarizes The PlayStation 4’s New Features And User Interface

By Sato . September 8, 2013 . 12:30pm

This summer was packed with plenty of exciting news regarding next-generation consoles, which includes Sony’s upcoming hardware, the PlayStation 4. During an event called “The New Age Arrival: Gentlemen, Let’s Make Games!” that took place during CEDEC 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment Asia’s Kensei Akiyama summarized the PlayStation 4’s specs and features.

Akiyama, who was the lecturer at the presentation, started out by showing off the PlayStation 4’s architecture, machine spec and concept behind its design. As presented earlier this summer, the PlayStation 4 is an exceptionally powerful machine, with a great memory capacity. While it may seem like it has a lot going on, its architecture will make it very easy for the developers to work with.

Next, he briefly touched up on the new Dualshock 4 controller. In addition to having the buttons and functions of its predecessor, Dualshock 3, it will also have several new functions. It sports a multi-touch pad, which will allow actions such as pressing, flicking, pinching and twisting, Similar to that on the PlayStation Vita.

The PlayStation Camera, will have HD qualities to go with an expanded angle for its field of vision. According to Akiyama, it will enhance players’ experience once they get to try it out with the appropriate games.

Akiyama followed by giving a closer look at the new “PlayStation Dynamic Menu” user interface. To summarize what was said, this new interface will be providing each and every player with a stream of real-time information.

From gaming info, to videos, DLC, and friend comments, all of this information will be set up to automatically appear on the screen, making it what Akiyama calls “A place where your all of your related interests will be gathered.”

As reported in the past, the Dualshock 4 controller will also feature a “Share” button, which allows you to capture content from your current games and more, then share them with your friends or on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter through the Share Menu.

In addition to the Remote Play, which gives you the option to continue playing your PlayStation 4 games on Vita through a stream-play feature, the PlayStation 4 offers multi-user support that allows for multiple accounts to be logged on at the same time, as demonstrated in the above image.

The Companion Apps feature, which will be compatible with Android and iOS devices, will allow players to chat and share their latest game-play info with friends. To those who are using their devices on the same network as their PlayStation 4, they’ll also be able to use them as a second screen after linking them to the game.

Additionally, for people who find themselves more eager to test out games before they’ve finished downloading, they will be able to play the parts that the console has downloaded before it is even finished.

PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399 and £349 in the United Kingdom.

  • HerosLight

Still wondering if you can have your own avatars in PS4.

    Because in this pic:

The guy has a picture of himself.

    • Brutal2D

I doubt it. They may have done that for demo purposes only. I don’t see why Sony would stop doing it. That would make their entire avatar selection completely nulled and pointless.

It would be pretty cool though. But I can easily see how people will ruin it with nudity and other things.

      • HerosLight

True, I don’t see many STEAM users with those kinds of avatars.

Maybe its really rare to encounter them. Either way, they could always have the “report” button.

    • Finalstar2007

Yes you can use your current avatar that your already using on the PS4 OR you have the option to use your own picture it is all up to you.

      • Brutal2D

Where have they said this? I would like to read about it.

        • Finalstar2007

They confirmed it multiple times at E3, during the time when PS4 was announced and in the PSBlog ( if you watch the E3 conference too ), you can use your current avatars or use your own picture its all up to you.. heres a link:

          • HerosLight

Thanks for the confirmation! That makes me happy to hear that.

I have SOME avatars that I bought but I really don’t like having to buy avatars to use one of my favorite video game/anime characters and wait months for them to upload it to PSN.

          • Let’s pray we don’t lose that right to people making stupid nude avatars or something like that

          • Guest

I think that’s a given, that someone someday will upload something questionable or offensive. But as HerosLight said, problably there is going to be a ‘Report’ button; maybe a mod team too.

    • RichyGaming

That doesn’t sound very safe for kids playing online lawl

    • In some of the other videos it showed the PSN ones

    • reysol981

      I don’t think so.
Cerny says we’d keep around the stuff from todays multiplayer, which I’d say means it’d be the same. The Pic is, as he goes on to state, seeded from one of his social networks.

  • Soon… I will be playing FFXIV on you…

    Very Soon…

            *Gets a loan*………….Q.Q worth it!

    • Sergio Briceño

You can play FFXIV on the PS4? I thought it was a PC and PS3 exclusive.

    • $36487238

wahaha. FFXIV… oh man. It might be the first FF MMO I’ll play then :-D

      • Same here– I really enjoyed the beta.

And hearing the new PS4 news– I’ll be enjoying PS4 beta too.

    • Steven Higgins

*also caresses wallet, but is instead thinking of KH III and FF XV*

  • And only 2 months away as well. My money is ready =^_^=

    Come to me PS4! *_*

  • Ryujin

Remote play will have me spending so much more time in the bathroom.

“I’ll just get to the next checkpoint and then I’ll wipe…”

    • Testsubject909

      “the floor with these guys.”

And then you never get around to actually getting off the toilet bowl.

    • $36487238

XD hahahahaha. Man, I feel you bro.

Me, …. O_O YABAI! I… I… can finally use Remote Play for times when my dad watches TV! Yahoo! Man, PS4 is definitely worth getting.

      • Ryujin

Also one of the advantages of remote play.

How is that “yabai!”, though? :P Shouldn’t it be something like “sugoi” or “kakkoii”?

        • $36487238

I somehow use “YABAI” as my replacement for the word “crap” or “shoot!”. Whenever something like this occurs, I usually say to myself, “Crap! I… I..”. But good tip dood. Maybe next time I’ll say “SUGOI”. ;-D

Shifting back to topic… :-D hahahah. Yup, back to the bathroom. Although, nah, I’ll avoid remote play in the bathroom. I might enrage my family when they find out I’m taking too long in the bathroom XD So yes, playing while my dad watches his cycling or UFC or movies, or while my brother watches his MTV or whatever or while my mom watches her movies, Remote Play lets me continue my game :-D

Now, I can finally look forward to playing KH3 while my dad watches TV. Oh yes!

  • SlickRoach

I wonder if the videos you record with the new Share button will have a watermark on them.

    • From all the videos showing off the “share” feature, I haven’t seen any watermarks.

Hopefully it’ll just be some small copyright thing at the bottom right.

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

I really hope that the Playstation Store will have a much better design on the PS4 than it currently does on the PS3.
As for the UI though, as long as it doesn’t have too many useless things on it I don’t mind. While a lot of people tend to dislike the current XMB for the PS3/PSP and the bubble UI on the Vita I don’t really mind either as they are simple and straight to the point, unlike the Dashboard on the 360 which is just ad filled and annoying to navigate… though you know that’s just imo.

    • puchinri

The new PS3 design is so irritating to me. I just can’t get used to it really.

Agreed on the UI especially. The Vita’s looks a little funny/silly, but it is easy to use and has its charm, and I like the XMB on the PS3/P. It’s the Xbox I can’t get over (there’s always so much going on and stuff).

      • I just use the webstore

        • That’s smart, I may have to give that a try.

      • Testsubject909

        I got used to it.

        I still don’t like it.

They really lost something during their transition to the new store.

And that something was an identity. Sadly the new PSN store on PS3 is just… It’s just there.

And the fact that you can’t even use the keyboard for the search function is just idiotic. I recall being able to use it in the past PS store, so this alteration is just confusing me.

Thankfully the PSVita PSN store is very similar to the original PS Store and is untouched.

        • KHSoraKeyBlade

I guess the thing I don’t like about it is, no matter how much I try to get used to it I just can’t.

It’s like a Gran Turismo menu gone wrong (and even the sounds are similar o.o). Since the transition to the new store I hardly buy digital or feel the need to browse around on it. Everything was categorised much better on the old design. I didn’t know about the keyboard not working though, that seems like a very odd design choice…

Haha, don’t give them any ideas or they might change the Vita one xD

        • Same here. The new PS3 store feels so clunky and it lags sometimes for me. It feels like you have to get through more things to get to what you want. I much prefer the Vita’s store right now.

Hoping the PS4 store does not follow in the PS3’s footsteps for that. I know they meant it to be an improvement, but it felt like a step backwards.

        • I don’t like it and I know I probably won’t get used to it.

Agreed though, identity (loss) is a good way of putting it.

      • Bobby Jennings

imo Xbox should have stood with the 2010 update(correct me on that) where they first got the sliding boards. It was really nice.

        • I don’t know if I remember what it looks like, but I’m going to ask my friend (to jog my memory).

    • Shady Shariest

I’m just hoping that they won’t make an “Indie” category :/

    • WyattEpp

Forget the design aspect; I just want it to not constantly lag like an MMO on dialup.

I guess a wish list function would be nice, too…

  • tylerc23

  • tylerc23

    PS4 is just incredible

  • $36487238

I’mma get this too! But first, I’ll get a PS3.

But man, that Share button is going to be awesome. It’ll be useful for my job and for my friends, who want to see me rock (and suck) at the PS4 games XD

  • vgbnd

Oh, sweet. The perfect gift to compliment the day of my birth. Time to guilt trip friends and family!

    • That guy is awesome

        of course he is.

  • Steven Higgins

    Okay Microsoft, what YOU got?
