Puyo Puyo Tetris Has To Be This Year’s Most Surprising Collaboration

By Spencer . September 10, 2013 . 5:47pm

puyoSega’s blob dropping series, Puyo Puyo, and the original block dropping game Tetris are… being mashed up for a new video game?!

Yup. The game has a single player mode and a battle mode where both gameplay systems are active. In Tetris, players make horizontal lines, but in Puyo Puyo vertical stacking tends to be the best strategy.

Famitsu reports Puyo Puyo Tetris is in development for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U. The game is slated for release in 2014.

We’re not getting this outside Japan, are we? Puyo Pop has become a dead franchise over here (and its last game was the Dreamcast’s last game made by Sega).

    • Tre W

I’d actually like to think that the Tetris connection would be enough to make for good reason to bring it over. Because who doesn’t know about Tetris?

Plus, that’s a LOT of different ports being released in one territory, when 1-2 could have sufficed if only Japan was being considered.

      • ninjabart122

It has potential, but I’m a wreck at Puyo Puyo.

I either didn’t read the instructions too well or I am horrible at chaining puyos.

        • 하세요

I thought I was decent but a couple of standard difficulty computers showed me how garbage I am at the series. This from the 15th Anniversary (Wii ver. at least).

I hope it gets released here! The last really good Tetris game was Tetris DS.

        • PreyMantis

I disagree. Tetris Axis for the 3DS is where is at.

          • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

I’ve got it because I have no other choice! It’s good, but it doesn’t have the personality of Tetris DS.

          • PreyMantis

What do you mean by personality? As far as I can tell, Axis has more modes and characteristics than Tetris DS.

          • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

I dno, quantity over quality. Tetris DS had the retro Nintendo characters and backgrounds and fun stuff like that. :) Axis has a ton of modes, but none of them are particularly compelling. Not saying it’s bad or anything! I’m really happy to have it. I guess I’ve just always liked the Nintendo versions of Tetris.

    • leingod

I just hope SEGA brings it as it is, and not as “Tetris Robotnik Mean Bean Machine” or something the like.

    • darryl scott

I guess no one played puyo pop fever on gamecube over here huh?

      • Jeffrey Thrash

        I did!

    • MewkaKazami

I think Puyo would have a real chance as a Android or iOS game for 1$ maybe, but like this I don’t think it stands a lot of chance agaisnt simialr type of games.

  • Jeffrey Thrash

I’ve actually kind of missed Puyo Puyo.

    • CirnoLakes

      … doesn’t everyone? ;_;

      • Helvetica Baskin Robbins

The site called PuyoNexus.net can fix that.

  • BoredmanDA

Oh sweet! Too bad we won’t be able to play it outside of jap–
“Puyo Puyo Tetris is in development for PlayStation 3″
YES! WE CAN IMPORT IT! ALL MY MONEY, SEGA!

    • 324234

      And Vita! :)

    I love puzzle games

  • CirnoLakes

Now I just want to see someone make Puyo Puyo x Tetris x Panel de Pon x Magical Drop x Beatmania.

    Then everything will be perfect.

    • ShinStar

      Beatmania? That’s random……lol.

      • CirnoLakes

I just had to throw that in there, don’cha know.:3

        • ShinStar

Well I like all those above, including beatmania so no objections!

    • FJLink

I’d actually prefer Dr. Mario instead of Beatmania, since having a bad rooster could ruin it.

      • http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/mgbenz mgbenz

Yeah we don’t want chickens in this game.

        • FJLink

Oh, you now what I meant :p I was talking about musical selection. It’s the same with Ouendan: If the songs included weren’t good the game wouldn’t be the same.

      • CirnoLakes

But think, if someone threw Beatmania into these classic puzzle games and made it work? That would be crazy awesome.

    • 60hz

magical drop is my all time favorite puzzler… MD5 looks great btw, i hoping they do a console release.

    • Göran Isacson

Perfect… or BLASPHEMY? Perhaps perfect blasphemy? Could be. Could be…

      • CirnoLakes

        Crazy awesome.

  • hazelnut1112

    Western release right?
    RIGHT?
Puyo Puyo is the game I dominate in. Thank you Mean Bean Machine.

    • Helvetica Baskin Robbins

Mean Bean Machine is for stupid ‘Murricans

  • malek86

Sometimes I think they should make a new Puyo Puyo as a downloadable title for eShop/XBL/PSN/Steam, because it would give it more exposure in the west, and people here are used to thinking of puzzle games as small titles, not big retail ones.

  • KO Kid! Kassius OooohNooo!

YES! Been waiting for Puyo Puyo to return! Ever since Puyo Puyo Fever for Gamecube and PC. :)

  • universalperson

It’s like Tetris vs. Dr. Mario!

    • Helvetica Baskin Robbins

      NO………NO……NONO
      NONO…NO…NO……NO
      NO…NONO…NO……NO
      NO………NO……NONO

  • 60hz

Sega tetris (Naomi/DC) was one of my all time favorites only to be surpassed by Tetris the Grand Master… And puyo puyo is always awesome (not to mention columns – gba columns was TOPS btw), so i’m having good feelings on this one…

  • Helvetica Baskin Robbins

My first reaction, and still the only:

    NOーーーNOーーNONO
    NONOーNOーNOーーNO
    NOーNONOーNOーーNO
    NOーーーNOーーNONO
