Resonance of Fate developer tri-Ace is developing Phantasy Star Nova for PlayStation Vita. The game supports ad-hoc multiplayer and you can team up with four friends to fight gigantic boss monsters called Gigantes.

Prefer solo play? Phantasy Star Nova also has a single player story mode that begins when you crash land on a planet. You can’t use photon, the energy source in the Phantasy Star world, so you have to live off the land. Sega says the game will have a survival feel.  The story’s theme is "commitment" and through different events you will build bonds with your companions. Phantasy Star Nova tells the story with real-time cutscenes.

Phantasy Star Nova is slated for release in 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

I just picked up Star Ocean – The first departure to continue on PSP. I’d really like to dig myself into Phantasy Star too.

    • Anime10121

First Departure was good, but Second Story blows it outta the water! Have fun!

      • Tom

It felt good to hear again the cheesy battle cries and the battle theme :) I have Till the End of Time and The Last Hope which I found really nice but I’d like to finish the PSP game first before I continue with the big console games.

        • Anime10121

Second Story’s also a PSP remake, and all around, the BEST version of the second game.

But yeah, glad to hear you’re enjoying it! It may be a remake of an older game, but it just goes to show that timelessness of old school JRPGs :D

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

This is going to be localized. Without any doubt.

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

Why should it be when they haven’t brought the MMO over

      • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Maybe they think SP has more chance than MP… right?

And and this was shown at the official Sony pre-TGS conference. And it was in English too!

And PSP1 and PSP2 was brought over the last one didn’t come over cuz end of PSP lifecycle… right?

So this + Freedom Wars = best year for Vita!! Better years to come.

        • Solomon_Kano

As a note, Sony did say that the content of the conference may not necessarily be relevant for North American gamers. There are Asian countries whose residents also speak English, so that was likely the prime reasoning for the stream being available in English.

That said, I do feel that PSN has a reasonable chance of being localized and the best start to getting the content of the conference out west is to show our interest, so it can’t hurt to bug the publishers in question.

          • Jeffrey Thrash

I think the fact that there could be an English version at all is reason for excitement. Besides, I think the only region-locked electronics these days are Nintendo consoles.

          • Solomon_Kano

Well, yes, Sony consoles certainly aren’t region-locked and being region-free is great, but people actually do want a localization a lot of times. Especially for a game like this, which has an actual story.

The conference being available in English allowed many of us to see and understand it, but it was still for the benefit of Asian countries like the Philippines (where English is one of the country’s official languages) and not us.

        • $36598391

no, NA companies are still bringing over PSP games
Sega just doesn’t care about their customers

          • Solomon_Kano

Let’s be specific: niche publishers are still bringing PSP games.

If Sega doesn’t care about their customers, then neither do Capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Namco Bandai, or the ever-loved Atlus.

Because the ONLY people still bringing PSP games are Xseed (w/ the help of Carpe Fulgur) and Aksys.

          • $36598391

Phantasy Star Online 2 hasn’t even been brought over, it’s looking less and less likely that there will even be an english release
I don’t know what conflict is going on between Sega of Japan and Sega of America to prevent a speedy localization of the game but they should get over it
because the NA Phantasy Star fans are the ones who are being punished over some stupid dispute between the two branches of Sega

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, nobody’s got a clue as to what’s going on with Sega. It’d be really nice if somebody could offer some insight, but no details. Real pity.

      • leingod

A regular retail game will always have a better chance to get localized than a free-to-play MMO. Much less work involved.

    • jujubee88

      YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!

      • Ramengeddon

        YOU GOTTA RELIEVE!

        • O_O Master Clueless

YOU GOTTA FORGET…. mind you where still missing PSO2

          • ekibyougami

Most Phantasy Star titles were localized for the PSP (except for PSP2 Infinity) so there’s still a moderate-to-high chance

          • O_O Master Clueless

PSO2 came out for vita and we don’t haves it so your point is?…

          • ekibyougami

PSO2 is multiplatform. Both for VITA, PC, and smartphones (Vita and PC is cross-region compatible).

Phantasy Star NOVA is an OFFLINE title like the previous phantasy star games FOR THE PSP. That, my good sir, is my point.
(I even gladly typed certain words in caps for you)

          • O_O Master Clueless

yet PSP2 infinity was offline and we dont have it and yes PSO2 is Multi-platform yet do any of the platforms in the west have it?

          • ekibyougami

            > “Most Phantasy Star titles were localized for the PSP (except for PSP2 Infinity)”

You should really take note that pure offline and online-only games have different market priorities. As much as I don’t want to compare Monster Hunter to Phantasy Star, but Monster Hunter FRONTIER (online-only) titles also have never even reached the western market… yet the other titles (which aren’t online-only) did make it out in the west.

    • Takui Nanao

I REALLY want you to be right

    • badmoogle

Why something tells me you are being sarcastic?

      Answer:Because it’s a Sega game. :(

    • GHAmer

it will…. after PSO2 that got delayed to release in US

    • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

I believe so to, they will localize this one instead of Phantasy Star Online 2 for the Vita. The reason being its cheaper to localize a game that doesnt requires online connection to work.

  • LaserVision

I’ve always thought that Square Enix should’ve taken this approach to FFXIV and FFX. The art direction in FFXIV looks fantastic but I just don’t play MMOs. I’m anti-social. (at least when it comes to gaming) Just make a couple of single player spinoffs set in the worlds of those games.

Edit: I forgot to give credit to Sega for actually doing this idea. Hopefully it will help drum even more interest for PSO2.

  • JustThisOne

    Eck. C-commitment? I’m not ready. :<

    …But if it's you, tri-Ace, I think I'll be okay with it.

  • Tenabrus

Now if only they’d release these overseas!

  • klkAlexar

The female bodies look kinda weird.

    • Virevolte

Yeah. I think the same everyday.

    • Slayven19

How so because I’m not seeing it :/

      • klkAlexar

In the screenshot here, the female chest is drawn a bit weird (it’s more noticeable in other screenshots), and I saw another screenshot in gaf with another female where the torso seemed to be longer than usual.

        • Slayven19

          Ah gotcha.

  • cloudcaelum

JRPG’s always more enjoyable on handhelds, especially with dat OLED!

Can’t wait, and hope native res, my eyes hurts when i look these pics, so much blur.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

I just hope the story won’t be about the power of friends like phantasy star portable 2…

  • Ryujin

Gigantes, eh? Kind of reminds me of Titanos in Ys Seven. Either way, it looks like they deserve that name.

Weapons are looking pretty nice, too.

  • pekikuubik

In related news, Sakuraba’s doing the music and there might be item creation.

  • Coloso90909

“Gigantes” is spanish xD, It means giants xD.

  • TheExile285

So…. One main male character and 2 female main characters?

    I smell a harem :P

Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing this in action at TGS.

  • Anime10121

Still debating which I want, PSVITATV or plain ole Vita. I’d much RATHER VITATV, but if it dont play Gravity Rush…

NTways, definitely getting this on one of them :D

  • ChiffonCake

Please don’t let us down this time, Sega!

  • Ferrick

New Weapon Info: Pile – Fires a harpoon that would pierce through the gigantes armor and “hack” them, temporarily controlling them to fight against other gigantes

    Picture: http://bumped.org/psublog/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/PIle-Weapon-Category.jpg

    Source:http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-nova-new-details/

    • Ryujin

Sweet. Didn’t expect to see any info on those piles anytime soon. Thanks for sharing.

      • Ferrick

        no problems =P

    • TheExile285

      Oh man, that is badass.

      • Ferrick

indeed, i would love to see this weapon in the main game (pso2) but chances of that happening is rather low lol, cuz it may be an OP weapon type

        • jujubee88

“cuz it may be an OP weapon type”

          My type of weapon! :P

    • Slayven19

That looks good, can’t tell if that’s a male or female though.

      • Ferrick

the one who is using the pike ? that’s a woman

        • Slayven19

The pile weapon in your screenshot above.

  • Virevolte

It… it’s not like I want to buy you or something…!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Bring to the states please. I know the whole PSP2 pirates thing was bad but give us a 2nd chance

    • O_O Master Clueless

      wait what?

      • Brandonmkii

PSP2 was like, one of the most pirated PSP games of all time.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

We didnt get psp2I because in the states PSP2 sold poorly because of pirating

        • O_O Master Clueless

          Figs.

  • WhyWai

looking good! I have faith in tri-Ace… hope it will get localised…

  • ShadowDivz

    Meanwhile in the–
You know what, it’s not even funny anymore.
    >_>

  • Nate

Does it only have ad hoc or does it have wifi multiplayer co-op too?

  • 60hz

bittersweet news – i guess that’s cool for jp gamers… files under “SEGA HATES US”

  • neocatzon

So, without photon, CASTs gonna be OP?

    • Brandonmkii

PSO2 CASTs can totally use photons.

      • Ferrick

but the world they are visiting in PSN has zero photons in the air

      • neocatzon

They’re not dependent on them like Newman or Duman. In this world of no photons, it’s either CAST or Beastmen.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

One can only hope they think about localization for this.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

That art direction is just incredible.

  • InfectedAI

This looks really cool. I don’t even have a Vita and I hope it gets localized.

  • http://www.staticshin.com/ Akshat Jiwan Sharma

Love tri ace. Their last game with sega (resonance of fate) was fantastic. Hope this turs out great as well
