Take A Tour Of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII’s Four Continents

By Sato . September 12, 2013 . 2:59pm

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will feature four main continents, each with their own unique themes designed by their respective team of developers. Square Enix uploaded a series of videos that show us exactly how different these cities are from each other.

The first video of the series shows Hope greeting Lightning at the Ark, where he serves the role of navigator. This is the area you’ll be returning to every morning at 6 am. The Ark is also Lightning’s base, where you’ll get to prepare for the journey, and also use the transporter device to head back outside.

Unlike the rest of the world, the doomsday countdown doesn’t apply in the Ark, so you won’t have to worry about the time spent in there.

The Wildlands

Lightning steps into the Wildlands saying, “So this is the last remaining reparation?” As the name of the continent implies (along with the wild Chocobo running around,) the area is full of nature. Unlike the other parts of the world, the people of the Wildlands continue living their self-sufficient as they’ve been doing for years.

According to Hope, the reason Yusnaan, the City of Revelry, has become the gorgeous banquet city it has, is because of the orders issued by Snow, who currently rules the area. In Yusnaan, Lightning will serve the role of a spy, and the game will be all about infiltrating the palace. According to Hope, it appears that Snow has recently been shutting himself within the palace.

At the 1:00 mark, we get a look at the arena, where man goes up against beast. Lately, the fights have escalated and people have lost their lives during the fights. The next scene shows a popular dating spot that is characterized by beautiful fountains… and Cactuars. Hope tells Lightning that she might stand out a little too much if she’s seen alone.

Finally, the last part shows an area of Yusnaan that is mainly for the rich, where normal people can’t easily enter.

As we all know, Luxerion, the Divine City of Light is the gothic religious center of Nova Chrysalia, and also the largest city of the world. The metropolis is ruled by the Order, an organization devout to their god, Bhunivelze. The citizens of Luxerion are very conscious of the world’s end, and spend their time praying for its salvation. The clocks that can be seen throughout the city are there to remind people of the time they have remaining.

The main theme is mystery-suspense, where Lightning will be doing some detective work to solve a certain series of murders.

The Dead Dunes

The Dead Dunes is a lifeless desert continent in Nova Chrysalia that will focus on exploring ancient ruins. According to Hope, most of the people who dwell in the Dead Dunes are bandits who seek treasure, as no one in their right mind would live there otherwise.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release in February 2014 in the U.S. and Europe for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

im personlay looking forweed to this one ;D

  • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

    Hope got cute swag

    • Sardorim

I wonder if Lightning will ever notice though…

I’m a sucker for happy ending and after all the BS she went though she better get her happy ending!

      • seyEliveD

I do not understand the Lightning x Hope talk. In no way has Lightning ever indicated she felt anything more than friendship for him, and they certainly don’t seem a pair. Not to mention he’s like half her height.

        • Sardorim

Because it’s Lightnings only Hope for happiness.

Also Hope grew up fine in XIII-2. Have you even played that? If you did you wouldn’t make such an uninformed comment like “He’s like half her height”.

          • seyEliveD

Actually, I was basing the height comment from the Ark video above. It was obviously an exaggeration, but she’s still head and shoulders taller than him in the video.

          • Ehren Rivers

In Lightning Returns, his body has become that of a kid again. It is apparently the work of the God Bhunivelze, for unknown reasons. In XIII-2, though, he properly grew up and I believe was about as tall as Lightning or Snow. Right now, he’s 527 (or 1,014 depending on the take) in the body of a 14 year-old.

  • Altumn

The battle music isnt quite my favorite so far… but holy cow listen to these!

  • Death Saved

Is it just me or does it look like her lip sinking is horrible when she is talking to hope.

    • Lip Syncing? It happens. Heh, if the trailers about Samurai costumes is any indication, there might be some animation discrepancies here and there.

    • terranoie

It’s likely that these lip syncs are placeholders and are just there so they can put it up for the video. The lip sync in the final game result should be okay if what I say is true.

  • Freya2012

Th city of Yusnaan looked so beautiful :)

  • Aoshi00

Can’t wait to play this, guess now Lightning Returns comes first before Drakengard 3.. A bit disappointed it’s young Hope interacting w/ Lightning instead of Commander Hope. Kaji Yuuki sounds nice though, he’s the teen idol Wakasa Towa in Sweet Fuse lol..

    • Sardorim

Commander Hope may still appear though!

      Think! Hope meets Hope!

The room would become tense if Lightning is in there too, yes yes.

  • kangms872

    CAN’T WAIT!!

  • hadjimurad

it’s been said before, but it’s still true: the more i see of this game, the more i get excited for it.

  • Virevolte

I like pretty much Luxerion and The Wildlands.

  • Pdugna

As much hate as FF13 has gotten in the past few years…its damn beautiful game…when i played it the first time in HD i finally thought this is what new gen is…and no iam not lying…so then when i look at FF15 its the same thing..Square like Naughty Dog and Insomniac games push the hardware they are on.

  • Rogerrmark

Moogles house’s are kinda like Jellyfish :D

  • James Enk

Not the biggert fan of FFXIII but i am still exited about this
btw the wildland remind me of Crystal Bearer

  • JunHoward

Hope that there are other cities than the ones the have shown in the trailers.

  • EverEndingStory

Reminds me of the creation of Skyward Sword, where in which each of the three areas was designed by a different team.

  • Setsu Oh

is it me or it looks like a psp hd port? was this game made for psp/vita first?
