By Spencer . September 18, 2013 . 2:38am

While Japan won’t get PlayStation 4 until February 2014, Sony will release the console in other Asia territories this December. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan will get the system this year.

The news was announced during a Sony Computer Entertainment Asia press conference going on right now, that Siliconera is at. Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed IV, and Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends (Chinese version) will be PlayStation 4 launch titles.

    Huh? That’s so weird. What’s the reason, I wonder…

    • Lumi

Maybe Japan is supposed to get more complicated region-specific services/software that comes with the system, which hasn’t been finished yet?

      • JustThisOne

Ah! That’s true. There are an awful lot of extra features on this one…

      • TrevHead

It probably has more to do with the Japanese dropping home consoles in favour of portables with the games becoming more western focussed.

Sony is giving Japan the Vita TV also, which has more games suited for them.

        • Lumi

But vita TV is a home console, which contradicts whatever it is that Japan prefer portable consoles. I simply think Sony is testing the waters with the home market

          • TrevHead

True Vita TV is a home console, but it’s much cheaper than a PS3/4 and has lots of Japanese games.

I know there are reasons for it (especially the lack of japanese-centric titles for this year), but it’s still pretty weird. And with all the vitriol between China and Japan as of late.

    • Lumi

Well, all that unpleasantness is more of Mainland China than Hong Kong/Taiwan. Chinese(speaking) consumers as a whole has always been quite Playstation-loving, so why let politics damage business?

    • SoundMatch

Yea like Lumi said, everyone here in HK loves Japanese people. (ofc there’s a minority).

  • kangms872

SURPRISE.. Japan. maybe sony will be announced at tgs.

  • Zikrayrus “Zikk” Dis Pear

So at best I can only buy one in December huh? Fine with that, I don’t think I’ll be buying one early anyways…

    What about Manila, Philippines?

We don’t get them consoles, we just import as well.
But they might appear at Sony Stores, better check it.

  • fawzowz

    Indonesia anyone?

  • WhyWai

Woo hoo! I can get mine this year!

  • Aristides

Japan has high demand for video game software, currently we’re eating into that demand so they need to refresh their numbers and give it a good marketing push to get the system afloat in JPN. As for the rest of Asia, they don’t consume as much as we or the Japanese do so I guess that’s why they get it before Japan.

  • Vesperion

Well what’s a console launch without a Dynasty Warriors game

  • Notquitesure?

Quick question they released persona 4 arena didn’t they put region coding on it? You don’t think they’ll try and lock down the jap ps4, i realise that the ps4 is region free but that doesn’t stop them. I may have misunderstood though but anyone can give there thoughts.

    • PS3 has always had the ability to region lock on games, but the decision to region lock is a developer/publisher decision.

It has been stated that the PS4 has the same region locking capabilities but that, again, it will be a decision made by the individual developer/publisher of a game, not by Sony.

The PS3 isn’t, and the PS4 won’t be, region free, it’s just that for the most part nobody has region locked their games aside from the specific case of Atlus and P4U.

    Woho! Malaysia!

Pleased with the news <-Singaporean here. Even more pleased with the confirmation of PSVita TV Jan next year, as well as a localization of Akiba's Trip 2 and Dangan Ronpa Side Story. Yay for being able to read Chinese text.

  • SoundMatch

I promise you, barely anyone in HK will buy it because we are all waiting for FFXV. That limited edition console bundle is gonna be gone VERY quickly.

Sony should of made it so you can buy custom shells from their publishers. That would boost sales in the beginning.

The lack of Japan centric software must be reason for it.
