Dark Souls II Lets Players Summon Two White Phantoms And Other Changes

Dark Souls II retains the essence of a lonely world with occasional interactions with other players when they pop into your game. Dark Souls II will be network based instead of being P2P based. This means the chances of seeing bloodstains and other players walking around will be higher and invading players will be better matched to the invaded.

Bloodstains work just like they do in other Souls titles. Touch one of these and you can see the last few moments before a player died. These warn other players about traps and upcoming enemies. Players can write messages, but you don’t need an item anymore. This is done through a system menu in Dark Souls II.

Using a White Sign Soapstone, players can summon a White Phantom in their game for co-op and in Dark Souls II you can have summon up to two White Phantoms.

You’re not safe from invasions when you’re undead in Dark Souls II. Red Phantoms can still enter your game. Dark Souls II also has a covenant designed for players that like to invade other player’s games. If you prefer to be helpful you can join the Way of the Blue and be a protector.

Dark Souls II comes out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 11. The PC version is slated for release shortly afterwards.

game looks fun, I like the limited time thing

adds to the feeling of danger

“You’re not safe from invasions when you’re undead in Dark Souls II. Red Phantoms can still enter your game.”

Well that kinda sucks. I hope there’s some way to avoid being invaded if I’m trying to defeat the area boss and I don’t want anyone bothering me.

Dont be connected online??? am just guessing here :P

    • Lloyd Christmas

Stay as a ghost/spirit or whatever. You can only be invaded when you’re in your body (That sounds wrong).

      • ShinobiBrown

That’s wrong. In Dark Souls II you are never safe from invasions now. Doesn’t matter if you are “alive” or in “Undead form”. “Soul form” is not in Dark Souls, you’re thinking of Demon’s Souls. Either way, if you don’t want to get invaded in Dark Souls II you HAVE to play offline now. Playing in undead form throughout the game is no longer an option to avoid invasions.

        • Exkaiser

There might still be a covenant or item that prevents invasions, but I suppose if you really don’t want to risk invasions, playing offline won’t hurt any.

          • ShinobiBrown

That is a possibility, To be perfectly honest though, I like the idea of never being safe from invasions when you’re online.

You could see fog gates in some of the new videos, so no red phantoms should be able to follow you into the boss room. Of course they’ll still bother you on your way TO the boss… but invaders usually don’t have higher levels than you, so if you can’t defeat a phantom on your way to the boss, chances are you’re not exactly ready to take on the boss anyway.

      • Asura

1 month or less into the game invaders will have gear superior to you practically every time if you’re doing a new game.

        I’m excited though.

  • konsama

Oh messages work like demons too again, nice.

And man getting lower HP as you die and also having chance of being invaded, sounds like it going to be SO fun. (Obv take it literally and sarcastically :P)

    Can’t wait for this game.

  • Crevox

Except you always could summon 2 white phantoms.

Every news site is reporting like it’s some new thing, but anyone who has played the game and done it before should know you could always summon 2.

  • Raltrios

Never played the first one because I don’t have Xbox live. I still want to get Live, but since there’s a PC version of this I might give that a try instead.

    • TrueDefault

PC version still connects you to Window Live, even on Steam. That’s what I heard.

      • Ferrick

yes, pc version of dark souls 1 uses gwfl *barfs*, but thankfully the second one scrapes that requirement

  • TrueDefault

I hope it’s easier to coop with friends now. I mean, solo-ing bosses is great, but it’s always more fun with people you know.

  • Demeanor

So exciteeeed!!! The MP side of this games has so much potential!!! A few ideas/wishes thrown randomly:
    - give me a gravelord servant who can actually SEE the misery it spreads :D
    - give us more “trolling” covenants in general, and specific anti-trolling covenants as countermeasures
    - give us a covenant where you can summon cpu-controlled monsters, or you can morph/disguise as a monster yourself when invading! Surprise surprise! XD
    - how about something as simple as RANDOM/several mob placements for areas? Might get imbalanced, but… a different nightmare for each game XD
    - severely nerf backstabs/lagstabs so that it’s not the prime choice of every other invader/defender you come across
