Tales Of Xillia 2 Trailer Gives Us A Glimpse Of The English Voiceovers

By Spencer . September 19, 2013 . 12:42am

Don’t worry you still have plenty of time to finish Tales of Xillia. Tales of Xillia 2 won’t come out until 2014 and this trailer has a sample of the English voice acting in the localized version.

Ludger, the protagonist in Tales of Xillia 2, is different from other Tales characters since he starts the game with a debt and you have to help him repay it to travel further in the world. Ludger also has three kinds of weapons, a sword, a hammer, and a pair of pistols. You can switch between weapons in the heat of battle using the Weapon Shift system.

Man… I do hope Millia’s dub won’t be monotonous as the last one. Although it kinda grew on me as the game progresses.lol. I also prefer jude’s voice in english compared to the original… maybe it’s with the english scripting.

    • KingGunblader

Noji is going to be working overtime for this game. I think her dub was kind of monotone at first on purpose, because Milla Maxwell’s voice in Xillia 2 was much more emotional and human, so she’ll have to recreate that, in addition to doing the “other” voice.

EDIT: Compare in these two videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS6kL5flmRw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXj2TV_H8Bk

      • Lynx

        That was intentional actually.

I’m expecting to use her normal voice for you-know-who.

        • outlawauron

The effect they were going for was intentional, she just wasn’t nearly good enough an actor to pull it off.

          • Lynx

You do know she’s quite a good actor, right?

If it it didn’t work, you know who to blame? The voice director or the script writer.

I’d also say that the recording quality for her lines was less than stellar when compared to everyone else as well.

          • SerendipityX

Ugh, yes at the recording quality of her lines. It sounded like she was speaking through a cheese grater in the beginning of the game. and it just seems to go up and down during the game.

    • ํ•˜์„ธ์š”

I didn’t like it at first but once you realize who and what she is, it makes sense why it is that way.

  • John Diamond

Well. let’s hope people can be open minded about these dubs, rather than the whole ‘damn you namco i want japanese dub too’/japanese sucks thing.

    • AkuLord3

Well the most of the voices are people we heard from Xillia sooo depends if you liked them in that for this. Its nice to have the option, but really Dub or not, i usually enjoy it anyway

  • CirnoLakes

Sounds like things are coming along smoothly.

Hopefully we’ll see things completed in early 2014 rather than mid or late 2014.

  • brian

Not to mention that Ludger is a senior citizen by series standards.

    • DragKudo

He’s only 20. Same age as Millia. I clearly don’t know what you mean…..don’t hurt me

      • Catnipcookie

The running joke is anyone over 19 calls themselves an Old Man/Old Lady – and the “kids” of the game treat them as such. This is seen in games like Tales of Vesperia. Raven is 35 but is almost ready to be put in a nursing home.

        • Raharu95

Well On Raven’s defense, he is way older than that. he just looks 35 physically XP

        • DragKudo

          oh ok.

        • Guest

For an old man, Raven is the funniest character in that game~

      • brian

I was actually referring (mostly) to an obscure part in Tales of Legendia with Will being called an old man even though he’s only 28 iirc, and he looks maybe just a couple years older than Ludger but most of the characters in these games look like teens or are teens.
And since it was also in recent memory, that comment about senior citizens from a Squeenix producer made me think of average ages of main characters in JRPGs but the definition of “senior citizen” was unclear in that context, so I figured that could add a hidden question about Ludger if he’s an old man or just old by genre standards.
I could go onnnn and onnnnnnnn about this, but this is probably a couple too many sentences.

  • DragKudo

Bring us the girl wipe away the debt xillia style

    • Guest

      That’s so Bioshock Infinite !

    • fairysun

      Sure, here you go!

      • DragKudo

I was talking about the little blonde one……but she will do….for now.

        • David Bandel

obviously he knew who you were talking about. he was just showing that he got the reference.

do not breed. (doubt you’ll get the opportunity anyway)

  • DragKudo

only one voice? Good thing i like J.Michael tatum

    • Freud_Hater

oh, is that him? I’m pretty sure that’s Julius’ voice, so… that’s cool =D

      • Wappuli

        Yup, this is for Julius.

    • Revorse

Yeah, he does have a badass voice.

    • Asrialys

Oh. Thought it was Crispin. lol

  • $48552495

  • Sentsuizan_93

The English voice over sounds awesome in this trailer! Can’t wait to see more.

  • ThatBlackGuy

Is the video not loading for anyone else?

    • Masengan

      I can’t see it either =[

  • Sweetness and I still haven’t played Xillia yet even though I bought it but GTAV is tons of fun at the moment.

  • $61526767

My blood is already pumping to play this and HD version Symphonia 1 & 2. Spending so much hours in both games..

  • Masengan

Is there another link to this video? I can’t even see the video box =[

  • MrJechgo

“Tales Of Xillia 2 Trailer Gives Us A Glimpse Of The English Voiceovers”
Huh… the main character this time doesn’t talk much guys XD
That just reminded me that I need to finish Xillia 1 too ^_^

    • I don’t know why someone down voted you… It’s not like you’re putting the voices down (o_O ) So I up vote in agreement to needing to finish Xillia 1 as I also need to finish it.

      • MrJechgo

Yeah… who knows… as for ToX1, I bought the game, along with Dragon’s Crown, but life kinda restricted me a bit. Once I get some free time, I’ll dive right into it ^_^

        • Ah I see. For me is was with FFXIV and Animal Crossing (>_< ) I will get to it probably during winter break when I have more free time.

    • Ferrick

actually he does talk lol, but it’s grunts and battle shouts (and some other dialogue that i can’t mention because it would be kinda spoilerific)

      • Rebellion14

Well after you finish the game once, they give you an option to give him a voice during scenes.

        • Ferrick

oh yeah forgot to mention that too lol

          • MrJechgo

Kinda wished that choosing that grade option would alter the cutscenes a bit, like making Ludger a bit more engaging in dialogues, or at least add new cutscenes where he actually talks.
After getting so many characters that talk in Tales games, it feels rather awkward that this time, the main character doesn’t. It feels like something is missing.
If Atlus could make Yu Narukami believable in Persona 4 Arena, when in the previous game, he didn’t talk, pretty much Namco could have done the same here. Sure, it’s extra work, but if it was part of the grade option, it would have been like unlocking the Director’s Cut.

          • Ferrick

yeah well atleast he still talks on option-scenes (after activating his voice in grade shop), but on first playthrough, he does talk in full sentences too

        • MrJechgo

Still… he doesn’t talk that much… He has battle stuff, and the xtra lines from the grade option, but Ludger still doesn’t engage in dialogue on his own.

    • Steven Higgins

Graces F and Xillia here. Funny I only heard obout Tales this year, and now I love it. Even more unusual, I like Xillia better than Graces even though I played Graces first.
But I’m gonna get this whether I finish the first or not.

  • NightzeroAX

    Can’t wait.

  • Jesse

Wish they’d give us an exact release date.

  • Jay

    Woohoo! :D

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • friendly neighborhood_dude

finally some great news for once

  • Asrialys

    I do believe that’s Crispin Freeman :)

  • Ferrick

Here’s hoping that nova’s dub doesn’t suck lol

though i gotta say, elle’s dad’s english dub isn’t bad

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Most people are saying that’s Julius.

      • Ferrick

hmm, i guess i must’ve heard it wrong, i might as well just check the japanese trailer for a bit

      • Ferrick

        oh, oops, yeah it’s julius

    • CirnoTheStrongest

      Spoiler much…?

      • Ferrick

… what’s there to spoil ? elle’s dad is pretty much the very first character you’d see in game

  • KingGunblader

I like this. Keep the trailers coming, Namco!

  • YES!!! Bring it on, I am ready! (Even if my wallet isn’t)

  • artemisthemp

    Where is Milla?

    • YoshEE

      Later on in the game

      • artemisthemp

I need her in the beginning

  • Balalaika

Loli!! Im getting the game for the Loli!

  • DesmaX

That’s funny, I just finished the first one yesterday.

Time to go for the platinum

  • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Im so glad this game will not have one liners annoying badly written talking Protagonist, now this is a Tales worth buying.

  • Cyrus

“Donโ€™t worry you still have plenty of time to finish Tales of Xillia.”
Don’t worry, I’ve already completed both games. =’D

  • YoshEE

Well I was hoping they would have the English voice acting for Ludger and Elle. But the sample english voice for the trailer sound great.

  • Betrayer

It’s going to be another expensive year next year….

  • French

    I love English V/A !!

  • Zangetsu777

    Can’t Wait

  • Pockystix

I dunno what bothers me so much about Ludger

maybe it’s that he kind of looks like a generic background character in any other Tales game. . . I’m hoping he’s not as bad as DotNWs lead character. . .

    • MrJechgo

The major problem with Emil Castagnier back in DotNW was that he had a whimpy attitude throughout most of the game. For some people, that really got on their nerves. For me, that was a little irritating, but in the end, I actually loved the chemistry between Emil, Marta and Tenebrae.
Ludger, for a change, doesn’t look like a traditional adventurer/explorer. He’s a cook who happens to know his way to fight… somehow XD. (I doubt that cooking schools teach people how to fight with blades, pistols and hammers.)
My major problem with Ludger is that since he doesn’t [normally] talk, I feel like I cannot connect to him like I could with Jude, Asbel or Yuri. I’ve seen some cutscenes from the JPN version, and most of the time, he indeed feels like a background character because he doesn’t step in to defend someone or something. He’s just standing there, while most of the other characters do the talking, mostly in a better way than in ToX1; Jude goes from uncertain medic in ToX1 to determined ass-kicker in this game.
The fact that Ludger doesn’t talk feels like Ludger is missing a personality. Honestly, if Namco would have done something similar to Mass Effect, that would have came out better. By that, I mean that Commander Shepard has a personality of his or her own and engages dialogues on his or her own, but the player still chooses about the decisions he or she makes.
I don’t know why… but the thing that worked in Persona doesn’t work as well in Tales, and even for Persona, they made Yu Narukami talk in Persona 4 Arena, which worked. Yu is believable in P4A even with his longer speech.

      • Pockystix

I’ve never had a problem with silent protagonists. But it’s definitely an odd thing for the tales of franchise, which relies on it’s own characterization.

In games like Mass Effect you play a set character, and get to sort of choose their alignment slightly, in games like Dragon Age Origins, or Shin Megami Tensei you’re mostly playing yourself, and choose things based on what you would do, so the voicelessness is reflective of you representing them.

I think Ludger not having a voice is odd though, but I don’t think that’s what bothered me about him. Again, it’s his design really, which is a subjective thing really. As for Emil, I never could get behind this kid, he just never really clicked the same way the entire cast of the previous game did. I can take a whimpy kid turned hero character, but not when he’s literally the only other character between a crazy girl and a brooding bishounen lol

        • MrJechgo

I actually liked the skits with Emil, Marta and Tenebrae. I don’t think I laughed that hard at skits before XD
As for the cast, well, you know how Dinosaur Planet got turned into Star Fox Adventures? Guess what? Same thing happened with DotNW. Based on concept arts unlocked in the gallery on the EU version of DotNW, it was supposed to be an original Tales game, with Emil and Marta being renamed Soleil and Selene (Sun in French and Moon in Italian), with a darker tone and with characters similar to Richter, Alice, Decus, Tenebrae and Aqua being playable characters.
Somewhere down the road… it got changed into a sequel to Symphonia.
Kinda wished I could have attended Wonder-con when Hideo Baba revealed Tales of Xillia. I could have asked him about that ^_^

  • Arcana Wiz

SO hyped for this… and i wonder if in the tales festival at tgs they will announce a new tales game.

  • HerosLight

    Now to hear Ludger speak!

  • Alphabet Soup

    Looks good!

  • AoNoise

This is too soon! My body! It wasn’t ready!

  • brian

    Why was this at TGS?
I just noticed it because at the end of the video, it’s labeled as a TGS trailer and most game news things list it as one, but it’s in english so it seems like it would be out of place at TGS, especially with it already being released for them.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Keep em’ coming is what I say. ^^

  • Bell

Out of all the Tales games they could have made sequels for, I’m glad the chose Xillia, since it had the best cast (Milla Maxwell all the way!) and most interesting story of any Tales game, at least in my opinion, weaving political intrigue and magical elements together in a brilliant way.
