Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Is ASega Crossover With Series Like Sword Art Online

By Spencer . September 22, 2013 . 11:33pm

Sega is getting into the ring with another fighting game, but it’s not a Virtua Fighter or even Fighting Vipers sequel. Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax is 2D fighting game with Dengeki Bunko characters vs. Sega characters.

The title was revealed at Tokyo Game Show with two confirmed fighters, Asuna from Sword Art Online and Shana from Shakugan no Shana. Leafa from Sword Art Online and Wilhelmina from Shakugan no Shana are also shown in screenshots, but it isn’t clear what role they play.

No Sega characters have been announced yet, but Shoryken reports Valkyria Chronicles was mentioned.

Read more stories about on Siliconera.

  • HerosLight

Never heard of this, but it looks cool.

I don’t know many characters from Dengeki besides SAO and Toaru Majutsu.

    They better have Touma.

    • wererat42

I predict that Kino from Kino’s Journey will also be in this. Maybe also Sadao or Emi from The Devil is a Part Timer. Some character from Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere would be cool, too.

    • DyLaN

      Touma and Mikoto is practically a given. It one of the most popular pairing frm Raildex. Poor Hamazura though. I think even Accel is more popular than him ^_^;
Here a list of LNs under Dengeki.

you can check out the teaser trailer here

looks like a mix of chaos code and UNiB to me

  • DanteJones

Don’t know who Shana is, but she looks awesome! Always looking forward to more fighters.

    • Namuro

Shana was probably the first novel-turned anime I’ve seen. I haven’t read the novel (I don’t read any, come to think of it), but the anime is really good! The music, the action scenes, the characters, etc. I highly recommend it!

      • DanteJones

That good huh? I’ll have to check it out then, thanks!

    • DyLaN

Shana is practically the mother of all tsunderes and the breakout role for Rie Kugimiya.

  • Raze

I’m hoping for Index and Maou sama character…

    For Sega side…
    I don’t know…I hope It’s not Sonic…lol…

    • DragKudo

persona characters maybe? or the ren and len

      • wererat42

That would be Atlus, wouldn’t it?

        • Raze

Sega Dream Corp own the whole Index including Atlus now….

    • wererat42

Honestly there’s not really a whole lot of characters to choose from the Sega library. Valkyria Chronicles, Virtua Fighter, Shinobi, Sakura Wars… Hatsune Miku??

      • Raze

        Shining Series is there…
        Phantasy Star too…

      • ShinobiBrown

You aren’t well versed when it comes to Sega are you? This is a cross over game so anything goes and Sega has plenty to pull from that isn’t Sonic. The problem is those IPs either don’t see the light in the US half the time or have been unjustly dead for years *coughRistarJetSetRadioSkiesofArcadiaSpaceChannel5cough*.

        • Kawashima

Dead for years but still manage to show up in all of the allstars games. Would kill for a new Skies of Arcadia.

          • Bigabu Beaze

Dude I would too. Lets team up!

      • Anime10121

        You forgot Shining!

    • DyLaN

You guys do realize this is a Dengeki fighters right? I won’t expect a lot of Sega characters in it.

      Though playable Miku sounds amusing.

      • Guest

in the stream they showed a valkyria chronicle stage filled with ragnite tanks

      • Chris Yuen

It’s said to be a Dengeki X SEGA fighting game. More details will be announced next month.

  • d3v

Actually, one of the stages shown in those screenshots shows a Valkyria Chronicles stage.

    • Kevin Schwarz

      Indeed, possibly VCIII?

    • Slayven19

Oh my goodness I’m blind! How the hell did I not see that! FacePalm! Oh well selvaria is a shoe in now as well as releia from VC3.

  • Heropon

Asuna avatar look like she haven’t slept for long time . Maybe because she abcxyz with Kirito too much

    • DyLaN

      Tht her hair I think.

  • Chris Yuen

SEGA, this isn’t what I meant when I said that I wanted a new Valkyria Chronicles game…

I’m a bit intrigued by the roster line-up though…Selveria? (95% chance, since she’s sort of like everywhere when it comes to crossovers)/Imca/Alicia?

    • British_Otaku

Selvaria is basically a given if anything from Valkyria Chronicles gets in, she pops up in all three games and is a mascot for the series more or less. >_> I get the feeling that we are more likely to see VC3 characters pop up than classic VC1 characters, but why not have Alicia and Imca.

  • InfectedAI

I wish SAO had gotten a decent game. I don’t think any romhackers will even try to translate the PSP game. It’s a shame because it definitely had a cool premise, but it looks like a cheap cash in. Also, no multiplayer.

    • DyLaN

Eh the PSP game looks decent to me. But the plot/character interaction is the main draw IMO.

      • Chiupon
        • DyLaN

The way Leafa and Asuna gang upon Kirito is amusing in Infinity Moment. And compare to some show like Makai Ouji SAO is defin better in terms of plot.

Letnot forget ppl have different tastes/opinion while we are at it.

Progressive and the later LNs are pretty good as well. And it is generalln agreed tht fairy dance is the weakest arc among the fans of the LNs.

    • Will John

Worry not, your wish is being granted although at a slightly slow pace.

  • AxionAzure

Shana is definitely the best tsundere and one of my all-time favorite characters. Her presence is enough for me to be interested and willing to import when this comes out.

  • Notquitesure?

    looks really good.

  • TrueDefault

So many fighting games are coming out! It’s the new FPS!
    Not that I’m complaining.

  • Zeonsilt

p.s. knowing sega,it must be smardphonez.

  • ShinobiBrown

If anyone from Jet Set Radio or Skies of Arcadia gets announced for this game I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled.

  • Tonton Ramos

Finally Shana on a fighting game!

    • s07195

  • Shizumasa

Hmm~ Dengeki Bunko, Fighting and the screenshot got me reallly interested.

  • DyLaN

Looks cool. I love ’em anime crossover stuff. Wonder how many Dengeki series will be in it.

So the chances of this getting localized….. ^_^; Yeah.

  • 4shiki

    Taiga, please!

    • Renaldi Saputra

Taiga, is it from Digimon World Re:Digitize that you meant?

      • DyLaN

        • 4shiki

Yeah, Taiga Aisaka! I wanna kick some asses with the palm top tiger. ^_^

        • Renaldi Saputra

          lol I see

but isn’t Toradora a slice of life anime?
          she can’t join I think

          • DyLaN

They can find a way around it.

  • Derek

Vs Sega characters you say? This will be interesting.

  • Biggest hope I have is that they’ll use some decent netcode for the game. So far P4U and BB are the only anime fighters I’ve really been able to play since the rest have such bad netcode and all the players are in Japan.

Phantom Breaker: Extra for instance is practically impossible to use online matching for.

    • Slayven19

Arcana hearts 3 has very good online.

      • ForteWily

It’s very likely that AH3 is using the same netcode as BB and P4A, they all function identically.

  • ivanchu77

I hope Wilhelmina ends being a playable character and not just some support/assist only thing, would totally main her :)

It doesn´t seem easy to get this localized, but hey, anyone remembers Z.H.P? that got localized and both Shana and sword art online maked an appareance there

    • DyLaN

Thing is, that isn’t an anime game. And anime game not called OP/Naruto/any Shonen Jump stuff hardly makes it over. Not too mention the licensing issue.

      • British_Otaku

Tatsunoko vs Capcom got localised worldwide. >_>
And isn’t this a “Light Novel” game like Jump Superstars was a manga game? The licenses probably go through Dengeki Bunko directly with little involvement from the various music groups, singers and anime studios.

        • DyLaN

^Forgot abt TvC. But tht not enough to convince me. We’ll see if miracle happen twice.

I think they will use the anime VAs though.

          • British_Otaku

One miracle from Capcom this generation of all companies is enough to convince me we could have it happen twice or three times. Tatsunoko’s anime series licensed by tons of companies across Europe alone.

Surely, using the anime VAs would just require contracting a voice acting studio and trying to get the original VAs in. I don’t think the ties are that strong between the voice actors and the distributors of the rights to the anime but I could be wrong.

In every work related to Dragon Ball, I will expect to see Bird Studio, Shueisha and Toriyama credited, not so much TOEI Animation (probably all video games, but it may just be as they went through TOEI as well as the three I mentioned before) and FUNimation (usually voice work, but sometimes just coordinating licenses which go through TOEI).

      • MasterScrub

We’re getting AQUAPAZZA of all things, this might not be that much of a stretch.

  • Cephrien

Sonic needs to be put into a 2D fighter already. :l

  • Anonymous

Localization please, But if it doesn’t get localized, Maybe, I could try to find a way to import it

    • Renaldi Saputra

console spec hasn’t been announced.. so how can we talk about localization first?
also it contains characters from anime, not game..

I doubt it will be localized

      • Anonymous

        Didn’t notice that
        Was too excited

  • Bigabu Beaze

Spencer there is a typo in the title, ASega? Unless that A is for Atlus! Also, I hope Beat and Vyse are in this game.

  • Celty on Dengeki side and Vyse on Sega side and I’ll consider an import.

  • DivinePhoenix69

Add Accel World characters like Haru/Silver Crow and Kuroyukihime/Black Lotus and im sold! Some Baccano! reps would be nice as well.

As for Sega characters well idk who’d they add aside from the already mentioned VC, maybe Sakura Wars since Dengeki bunko published a SW novel under their label? Heck even if they somehow add Sonic characters*readies flame/downvote shield* and are able to make it work somehow then im all for that too.

    • British_Otaku

Afraid of downvotes for suggesting a Sonic character really? >_>

I would hope SEGA throws in Bayonetta, given how a lot of characters seem to be female (you can see even most people’s predictions have female characters). Sakura Wars should be able to make if even if it didn’t have a novel under their imprint.

      • DivinePhoenix69

Well alot of people seem to get annoyed whenever Sonic characters are brought up in anything crossover related apparently(it happened pretty often back when Project X Zone was revealed).

Im honestly hoping this isnt an all Female fighter, mainly because as others said both Dengeki and Sega a good lineup of great male characters it’d be a shame if they werent included in favor of yet another all-female fighter.

        • British_Otaku

I understand it on some level, Sonic already gets into everything with SEGA on it, why not let Shenmue (which has a third game in development hell for like a decade), Jet Set Radio (hasn’t had a game in ages) and Valkyria Chronicles (relatively small and young series with one game in localisation hell).

I want to see less Dragon Ball Z characters and less big series in J-Stars Victory Vs than off the wall series you never heard of and up and coming works like Assassination Classroom. Still, Sonic should have been in Project X Zone, even if it was only him from that franchise.

I hope it isn’t exclusively female as well, but we’ll see.

          • DivinePhoenix69

I can understand why people would feel that way, but i dont get why not have XY Sega IPs along with Sonic characters, that way everyone can be happy. I dont see how having Sonic characters would overshadow the other Sega IP’s, that didnt stop FE from getting recognized in SSBM despite that game featuring Mario and Pokemon characters, alot of people over on the PXZ GF forums felt that way, but i digress.

Dont get me wrong i have nothing against all female fighters or games in general, its just that we have plenty of those already so it’d be kinda meh. Then again when it comes to crossovers the reality is that you cant please everyone no matter what, so we’ll see.

      • Göran Isacson

But… isn’t Bayonetta Platinums character, not SEGAs?

        • British_Otaku

As much as I would like Platinum and Kamiya to be the only developers of Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101 for ever and every, nope.

All of Platinum’s games despite being original IPs (minus Metal Gear Rising obviously) belong to SEGA and Nintendo (The Wonderful 101).

          Click Current Owner(s) Information:

That said, it means that the Wonderful Ones stand a chance at getting into Smash Bros and Bayonetta could make it here and All Stars Racing, plus there is always the possibility that there is a break up of sorts, SEGA/Nintendo could sell the rights back to Platinum. I expect Nintendo/SEGA to be cool and always have Platinum on the job.

          • Göran Isacson

Huh, shows what I know. I guess that since Bayonetta 2 is exclusively for the WiiU I thought that Platinum owned the IP, since I believed that if SEGA owned it they wouldn’t agree to a deal where the game gets made exclusively for one console. Welp, guess it’s a possibility then, sad as it is to see that Kamiya doesn’t own his own babies…

Although I do admit: Bayonetta versus Shana, with Bayonetta trolling Shana into oblivion would be very amusing to see.

          • British_Otaku

I assume Platinum was already in talks with Nintendo about what would become The Wonderful 101 and attempted to sell Bayonetta 2 as well given that SEGA weren’t going to be able/willing to fund it.

How does SEGA benefit? Well I guess they don’t have to pay for marketing and can more or less sit on their hands to do the safer parts of pushing forward a sequel (like approving an anime adaptation, printing their name on every related release and focusing on releasing safer games like Sonic).

It’s a shame but that great creators don’t own their works, but at the least Kamiya is still in talks with Ninty & SEGA and the crossover potential like Bayonetta vs Shana will be glorious.

I still need to watch Season 2 of Shana and see if the manga that VIZ translated is any good.

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, I too have only seen the first season of Shana. Apparently most people dislike season 2 and think the finishing season 3 is vastly superior, but eh: sometimes you gotta try things out for yourself.

  • Ramengeddon

So……Persona now belongs to sega right? lol

  • Aristides

We better get some western love! This sounds like something Atlus might bring over 0-0

    • Anime10121

Uh……not really. This game, like so many crossover anime games before it, would be a licensing nightmare! The only two characters revealed thus far are properties of two entirely different companies in the west…Aniplex and Funimation. I can only surmise the number of companies involved will only grow from here :(

      • British_Otaku

        Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Plus I get the feeling that this game has stronger ties to the light novel publisher than the anime, not that they won’t have to discuss rights with the animation groups and such to a degree in Japan at least.

        • Anime10121

People always use TvC as an example as to why Crossovers could come here. Do ya wanna know why? Because unfortunately, TvsC is the exception, and not the rule :(

          • I think it is an exception as well. Not even the Jump Superstars made it over here. Fortunately if NISA can keep Dengeki characters in ZHP I’m sure SEGA can localize this fighting game if they want to.

          • Anime10121

Well, let us hope my overt pessimism is off the mark then!

          • British_Otaku

One significant exception is reason to think we should make our demand known. Tatsunoko being an anime company with dozens of sublicensees should be harder to deal with that Dengeki Bunko methinks.

That said, when this game was announced I curled up in a corner and praised the gaming gods (Sony-san and Mr Microsoft) for making their systems region free. Given that I have a Japanese 3DS, I should be playing this soon enough as long as it isn’t a Japanese Wii U exclusive… People would flip out if that was the case or piracy/homebrew to play the game will fly at lightning fast speeds.

          • Anime10121

Exactly! I’m guessing (hoping) this is for PS3. I’m importing the hell outta this, and if it does come to the west? I’ll buy it again to show my support for localizations :D

  • Brandonmkii

Really need to know who’s developing this before I get hyped. Sega’s okay, but I don’t know if they’ve ever done a 2D fighting game before.

  • s07195

I already commented on this news in the OT, but anyways, I wonder how many Dengeki Gakuen RPG characters will be used. And Spice and Wolf, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora cameos, please. (The latter being the only ‘down to earth’ novel in the whole library).
Hopefully, there are some more obscure series in the game, but now that it’s not just Dengeki Bunko characters, the roster might be quite limited.

    DLC stages, maybe? ;_;

I hope that they pput index and Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon characters in this game.

Wipe the floor with SAO characters while playing as some Index or Horizon characters how awesome that would be

  • Lynx

All I ask for a kind of game like this is Tomo/Misao again. (wouldn’t surprise me as they were in Cross of Venus.)
As this is a fighter, with a Kurogane/ Blazing Kurogane Kai Special please.

  • British_Otaku

Valkyria Chronicles, Sakura Wars and Hatsune Miku vs Spice and Wolf, Accel World and Toradora? Importing hard. >_>

I’m already happy with seeing Shana alone to be honest, I hope it’s on a lot of platforms.

  • Slayven19

Ah man this is awesome if it does have VC characters in it. Throw in some sands of destruction characters as well as Sakura wars and they can make this work. If it only has VC characters that’d be fine too but sega could really make this big.

  • Kevin Schwarz

Shana-cyan! Oh I hope they release it on consoles eventually!

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

Wow this is pretty awesome and i like how the sprite work reminds me of UNiB

  • DivinePhoenix69

Idk now that i think about it this is sort of a similiar situation that TvC was in, as it was thought by many that it wouldnt be localized due to licensing yet Capcom actually bypassed that with only one roster casualty(Hakushon Daimao).

Then again this is Sega we are talking about, i honestly doubt they are willing to go through the licensing hassle like Capcom did with TvC, especially since aside from Sonic most Sega IP’s are niche in the west for the most part. Same goes for the Dengeki guys even though some of them do have decent followings in the west.

    • British_Otaku

SEGA brought over Anarchy Reigns (eventually and for really cheap) and Hatsune Miku while Capcom left Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and E.X. Troopers in Japan.

They aren’t the same circumstances, but basically I trust SEGA to localise games more than Capcom.

      • DivinePhoenix69

Thats true. I did hear EX Troopers wasnt that great anyways so i guess we werent missing much, though i will give you AAI2 though.

Who knows, hopefully it does get brought over at some point.

        • British_Otaku

          You got it backwards, mate.

E.X. Troopers is the best game on the 3DS to me (I more or less imported just for it) and was the GOTY for a number of importers here in 2012. The cult following is big to the point that every thread about Lost Planet 3 has people lining up who are more interested in E.X. Troopers or already tried/finished it with positive impressions.

It’s the best game Capcom served up in ages, from the amount of content to how well it works. It didn’t sell super well on the first week in Japan, but that may have been on the part of poor marketing and sorta being a new IP.

EDIT: On AAI2, till the e-Shop lets Capcom put up DS games or Capcom releases collections of the AAI games on the 3DS, I don’t know whether we will be seeing it.

  • While very short, it looks promising! I love the idea of a game collaborating anime franchises – before, we’ve only seen video game franchises band together through such games as Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and the rare guest appearances for other franchises, but nothing like this.

For now, here’s my speculation on what I’ve seen…

Leafa/Wilhelmina seem to play as a Support mechanic. It looks limited to one character per player considering the icon size – notice it dulls out as well as say “Support Cancel” beside Asuna in the below gameplay. Note how this maneuver used up one bar from her meter.

The icons at the bottom are a different colour for Shana/Asuna. When Shana used hers, she gained a portion of her meter, but not enough to fill a second bar. The screen also paused… maybe it can extend combos like Barrier Bursts within Guilty Gear/BlazBlue?

Asuna’s “Shooting Star” appears requires a Half Circle Forward input. She may also have a gatling input move, so I’m going to assume it plays very much like your typical fighting game in terms of gameplay mechanics.

Shana also appeared to use her special move after dashing and turning around without crouching… so maybe it was a charge input?

Again, this is merely speculation on what gameplay I’ve seen.

    • British_Otaku

Your analysis of the little footage we have is greatly appreciated (I would like to see you comment on games here or even chat on the Open Thread if you haven’t), but it seems you haven’t tried out or heard of some other crossover games like Jump Superstars, Jump Ultimate Stars, J-Stars Victory Vs, Sunday VS Magazine: Shūketsu! Chōjō Daikessen (Shonen Sunday and Shonen Magazine),.

      Some more here:

I’m not saying that there are tons of crossover games between anime, manga, light novels and cartoons, but if you haven’t give all of these a look. All of the one I mentioned are region free on their chosen platform, pretty good and most of them have came out.

      • Thanks for that abundance of information! It definitely seems like I’m behind times in terms of crossover games – besides the most recent J-Stars Victory. This also strangely reminds me of the somehow forgotten Queen’s Gate Spiral Chaos >_>

I do comment on several articles! Not many, though I’ll try make an effort to comment more, and maybe even on the Open Thread some time.

  • ronin4life

“cross over fighter with sega and dengeki bunko”
“only two characters announced… Asuna and Shana”

…uh, you announce your CROSSOVER with only characters from ONE side?

    ?_ ?

    • DyLaN

Leafa and Wilhenmia is there too. And its just a teaser so far.

  • Dark Zerato

Knowing SEGA, the chance of this game coming to NA is 0,0000001%. But, please release it on a console, not a smartphone or arcade.

  • Astrotrain

Yes! Don’t ever stop making sprite based fighting games.

  • Spirit Macardi

If Sonic ends up in this I’ll laugh my head off and then proceed to buy this by any means necessary XD

I don’t even like fighting games, but him being in this would be just too hilarious to resist!

  • Zak Ledward

Sold when I saw Asuna as a playable character. Give me a release date and a price and I will be there :|

  • MasterScrub

  • Raltrios

I’ll be maining Shana if I ever get the chance to play this. Favourite anime series, but I’ve never been able to play a game with her. Partly because the accessories I’d need to make her in SCIV were bonuses I couldn’t access :/

    • British_Otaku

      Ignore this post please… >_>

    • British_Otaku

This is sorta off topic but Homura’s final form in Senran Kagura burned of Shakugan no Shana to me.

Look at this (excuse the poor quality, I looked for a while for the first 3DS game, it’s obviously easier to find the anime, Shinovi Versus or Burst but I wanted this one):

Easily the best boss battle in the first game and the one before it is pretty good despite not even changing up the formula much.

The below post is a link I copied in by mistake while looking for the footage, Disqus doesn’t seem to let you change the embedded video even by removing the link completely.

  • Luis Camargo

Sega…making me cringe with games I want to play and may or may not be localized.

I want to see Vyse and Kiryu in this game.

Next we might have a Sega x Capcom

  • Want Durarara! characters!! *-* Shizuo, Izaya, Anri or Celty <3

  • Demeanor

Wow, cool, Asuna in a 2D anime fighter!!! Obviously I want Kirito as well (yeah, I did watch SAO start to end after your explanations guys XD currently immersed in Shingeki and it’s AWESOME)! Don’t know about Dengeki Bunko but “Sega” brings to mind a lot of cool characters, like Selvaria or even Miku!
From the very short clip it didn’t look superior to Under Night in-birth though… :P I want some Yuzuriha XD

  • JustThisOne

    Resonance of Fate, maybe?

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. While the teaser had some slightly stiff sprite-work, I will not deny that the potential cast has me intrigued. Reading up on Dengeki Bunko shows that they’ve got a LOT of interesting characters to play with like Spice and Wolf, A Certain Magical Index (and Railgun of course), Kinos Journey, Devil is a Part-timer… a lot of potentially interesting characters to throw in a fighting game, especially something as unexpected as a sprite based fighting game. All that AND potential SEGA characters? That is definitely an interesting prospect. Perhaps it won’t be as pretty as Persona 4 Arena, but sometimes I’m the kind of guy who takes what he can get.

Although speaking of ArcSys, I will admit to this: I did hum the GGXrd song when I watched the teaser, and found my viewing pleasure improved tenfold.

    • ninjabart122

      Based TouMAN

He’s gon’ break that illusion of yours.

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha wow, who made this glorious piece of art and where can I go to follow them?

Also I have to admit I’d like to see Touma go up against the martial arts expert Badass Normals of the Virtua Fighter series, just to see if he can take on people who AREN’T super-powered, just very good at kicking ass. ‘Twould amuse me greatly.

  • Kelohmello

I’ve been saying this everywhere, but this game /seriously/ reminds me of Under Night In-Birth. Considering Sega apparently made it, and French Bread works with Sega, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of their team helped make this. That’d be really, really cool to me.

Premiers in Akihaba on Oct 6th at the Sega Arcade. I just came.
Love that Carmel and Leifa are also in it.
A little slow to post this. Saw this a few days ago.

I can’t seem to find any information on what platform this will be on. Does anyone know? My guess is PS3 and/or PSP.
