Grand Knights History’s Online Service Shutting Down Next Month

By Sato . September 27, 2013 . 1:02pm

Earlier today, Marvelous AQL announced that the company will be ending the online services of their PSP RPG, Grand Knights History, developed by Dragon’s Crown makers, Vanillaware. The game was originally released on September 2011.

Grand Knights History’s online feature had players represent one of the game’s three kingdoms, and put them in groups to fight against others of the opposing side. Winning these battles allowed them to expand their territory, win rewards, and rank higher on the leaderboard.

While the game’s online service will be ending on October 31, 2013, the offline version of the War Mode will not be affected, and players will still have access to it.

Grand Knights History was originally picked up for localization by Xseed, but the game’s western release was subsequently cancelled due to a lack of development resources.

    GKH had online? >____________________<

    • Shady Shariest

This might be part of the reason it was shut down :D

    • Lester Rat

GKH was mainly an online game. One of the reasons XSEED canceled GKH was because Vanillaware’s delay on Dragon’s Crown would make them available to work on GKH very late for a PSP online game to be viable.

If the game was not so dependent of the online mode, they could have postponed GHK, as the translation was already done and publishing it would not make them lose money, even if PSP games are not selling well recently. However, to support the online mode, they would have to run servers for it and it would make the game have 0% chances of profitability.

Wow that sounds awesome. It’s too bad it was cancelled for over here.

  • ShootThatWay

Oh boo, I was gonna play again. D:

EDIT: Oh October 31, I thought October 5th, when I have some school work due. Well then. I got a month to check things out.

  • Go2hell66

Sigh cant help but get depressed every time someone mentions this game i just want to forget about it

  • zferolie

It sucks this never came here. And what do they mean, Lack of development sources?

    • z_merquise

Vanillaware is developing Dragon’s Crown at that time and they never have enough people or time to do the coding for the English release of GKH.

    • Hector Velar

there is an ISO that you can download if you have a hacked PSP it is mostly translated. Really good game, now I do not approve of piracy, however if they don’t bring it over it means they don’t want my money so yeah, free ISO look it up. (I have purchased most games from vanilla ware including Odin Sphere, Dragon Crown, Princess Crown, GrimGrimmoure so i don’t want any hate messages. if they port it over to vita TV i will buy in a heartbeat along with Murasama)

    :’( sadness

  • Billy Kostyra

    it had online ??

    • Brandonmkii

It was a big part of the game, if not THE focus of it.

  • JustThisOne

Damn, and I still had a splinter of hope for this. And by splinter, I really meant 0.1%. But now it’s gone for good. :/

It’s a shame they really dropped the ball for this… especially with the whole script being finished thing.

  • Lester Paredes

I get sad when I hear about this game. I suppose that puts the final nail in the ‘perhaps it’ll still get localized’ coffin.

    • mockturtle

The fact that it was a PSP game put the final nail in the “perhaps it’ll still get localized” coffin. No T no shade, but seriously.

      • brian

To be fair, Tits SC is also a PSP game and it’s getting released for that too and sure also steam but this could be on PS3 via psn.
They still had a chance to repair their image from being unable to code GKH.

        • mockturtle

I was mostly making a joke. I’m aware of SC and I’m really looking forward to it. (Also lol, Tits.)

And if anything, I think GKH not coming out here was a blow to Vanillaware’s reputation, not XSEED’s.

          • brian

I was actually thinking of Vanillaware’s reputation too, just worded it badly, but yeah.

        • X_Bacon

          Tits, you say?

  • Bacon_n_Lettuce

So is there any chance that Xseed might release their localized script if this game seems like it’s on the verge of being forgotten by history (yay, puns!), or are they just going to hold onto the rights in the event that this is remade sometime in the future?

  • katamari damacy

and they finished the text. Vanillaware MUST have time on their hands now that Dragon Crown’s finished. Why not finally take that English script, place it in the game, then port it to the PS3/Vita/PSP through the PSN store? Vanillaware just got some good press off Dragon’s Crown, why not parlay that into free advertising and hype for Grand Knights History?

    • heartless141

well updates for DC is still coming out, so i guess they have plans with that.

otherwise they still have that DLC for Muramasa to work on…. it has been a while

  • Aristides

How about someone porting this to Vita and giving the game a second chance? :P

  • Xaxal_Ravenguard

How is the offline mode? Is it still pretty meaty, or is it pretty shallow? (As a comparison point, you could use other, similar RPGs as benchmarks).
