Ragna From BlazBlue Wrote A Light Novel, And It’s Being Turned Into A Vita Game

By Eugene . September 27, 2013 . 5:03pm

Arc System Work’s Groundhog-day horror/mystery visual novel game Getsuei Academy Kou has released a trailer of its varied characters. Most of them will be part of the school’s student council, who look set to be part of the fight against the mysterious Hazards that walk the lands, if the trailer is any indicator.

Getsuei Academy Kou is based off the light novel of the same name by Tomokazu Sugita (BlazBlue’s Ragna the Bloodedge/Gintama’s Sakata Gintoki’s voice actor). Players are Hiroshi Toyama, a transfer student to Getsuei Academy who transfers to protect his grandparents from his parents. Unfortunately, his first day… doesn’t go so well. Warned that “ghosts stalk the school” he disregards it and is subsequently caught face-to-face with the hellish Hazard demons.

Toyama is saved by Eiri Mizuki, another first-year student, who then kills him. Or does she? He awakens the next day only to realize it’s the same day as yesterday.

Getsuei Academy Kou is headed to the PlayStation Vita October 10th.

    *Reads the title*
    Best game ever!?

  • Pdugna

read the title and thought i would see blazblue lol owell

    • D H

…I totally thought the title was literal. As in, Ragna himself, the character, wrote a novel in-universe and they were making it into a game, and imagining the craziness of the result of that…

      • RavenholtEX

I would love to see that as a comedic substory in Blazblue Chronophantasma. He could have a pen name that makes it completely obvious who he is, but nobody can figure it out.

        • D H

          Narok Blüd.

          • RavenholtEX

Hmm, maybe, I was thinking something even more simple and obvious, like Angar Edgeblood.

        • Göran Isacson

And then the story is about how the heroic protagonist beats the hell out of this douchey snake-guy, every day all day, and a gentle catgirl does NOT shake him down for food but does in fact cook for him and he has a brother who he has a very pleasant, platonic and functional relationship with.

          Oh Ragna. Oh Ragna.

  • pantsonadog

I hope it comes to PC as well!

    • Dark Zerato

Better hope they localize it. Sugita is my fav seiyuu so i want a look into his novel.

  • I hate people that are nitpicky, but: Activating Self-Hate Mode

I think the title would be better as “Tomokazu Sugita, the voice of BlazBlue’s Ragna, Wrote a Light Novel and ..”

Though after slamming through all of the Bururaji, Zoku Bururaji, Bururaji W, AND Bururaji H episodes in a span of two weeks, I can understand the difficulty in separating the two.

    * I’ve had GetsuKou on pre-order for a while now. The preview that they played during the 4gamer Arc stream during TGS really sold me, sounds really good.

    • Additionally, for those capable, the GetsuKou demo is available for download now on JPN PSN.

    • echokanon

yeah, the title is really misleading and I would have prefer the other way round

    • The problem with headlines is that one has to squeeze as much information as one can into a very limited space. We don’t have the luxury of being wordy when it comes to headlines.

      • rebecasunao

What about “Voice actor Tomokazu Sugita” or something similar? He’s very well know among fans of japanese games, and a huge fan of games himself. It would sound much better to credit him than one of his characters in the headline.

  • Tyler Beale

Let me guess….No plans to bring this to the US, huh, Aksys? Just like XBLAZE…

    • Sapitntapit

Wait, Xblaze isn’t coming to the US?

      • Nothing announced yet and status as “Visual Novel” is a huge hit against localization. But who knows, there’s always a chance, right?

        • Tyler Beale

Well, Aksys loves VNs and BlazBlue, and Xblaze has those 2 things going for it, so there’s a good chance of localization. It’s something BlazBlue fans I’m sure are definitely interested in, and I was hoping it would be that “mystery game” they would announce back at E3, alongside BlazBlue CP.

          • I’m definitely behind the idea that if XBlaze has a chance because Aksys has been localizing some VNs, and its ties to BlazBlue definitely are in its favor.

But after playing it, I’m concerned that it’s not connected enough for Aksys to be really active about it. Another case of MoriP overselling — it’s connected to the Blazblue world, but it’s more of a prequel to a prequel.

I do hope they bring it over though, it was a good story, and the gag route alone had me rolling on the floor for hours. Maybe we’ll see an announcement come Jan/Feb.

      not otome centric enough

  • Vadim Merzhey

Let’s see how good it will be… Hell, I may even buy it.

  • Keine

Is it me or does this have a lot in common with Danganronpa??

  • RichyGaming

Could have sworn Ragna was a criminal who doesn’t have time to join companies and make Light Novels.

    • s07195

‘You wanna earn some big money? Well, here’s the scoop. I, Ragna the Bloodedge, have written a book. Yes, I mean everything it implies, publishing rights, whatever, all yours… You will find the manuscript at….’

Now I’m imagining something along the lines of Lemony Snicket.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. Characters actually look pretty interesting, and if Sugita is even half as witty as Gintoki I think the script here could be pretty darn interesting/amusing.

    • s07195

I’m pretty sure I’ve read of him going ad-lib many times during his VA ventures… At least some of them are perverted jokes. (He has been known to sing preverted lyrics versions of robot anime/sentai songs.)

  • xAKUM3TSUx

Nice info! Stupid headline…Anyway the light novel setting and trailer has got me interested.

  • Freakmasta

Sugita wrote a book!? Did not know…

    • MrSirFeatherFang

      The wind… is troubled today.

      • I… don’t like this wind.
The wind always snatches away what’s precious to me.
        I’ll stop this wind.
        One day, for sure.

he wrote it specially for Yassan

  • Keko

    Thank you, based Sugita.

    • s07195

I’ve always wondered, what does ‘based’ mean in this kind of context?

      • doubleO7

        According to Urban Dictionary:

“an adjective to refer to something as the highest level of cool.”

There were some… other definitions. But this one seems to be the most commonly used, and in this context the meaning that Keko intended.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Its a joke on the rapper lil B that became a thing. Original meaning is “based god”. Now it just means like god-tier or glorious.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Just say Tomokazu Sugita. I’d rather you guys not “Kotaku” up the titles.

    • Kelohmello

What? Come on, that joke needed to be made, it was hilarious.

  • Thatguy

Ah, i thought it was book: *How i killed that dastard Terumi 100 times. And still doing it*

  • Notquitesure?

Been in a 999/Virtues mood lately this sounds promising :)

  • DyLaN

Would like to take a peek at the source material but it isn’t translated into chinese….. (unless I’m wrong)

Anyway the premise sounds interesting. I’m hoping Aksys/ASWUS will bring this or XBLAZE over.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

It’d be pretty funny if a violent fighting game character wrote young adult fiction in his universe

  • Ephidiel

inb4 Sugita voices his own character in this XD

  • Bell

Chrono Phantasma poster? Jubei plushie? I don’t know who’s room that is, but they have impeccable taste.

  • artemisthemp

So what is the chance for Western release?

  • k.b.a.

this seems… exhausting. interesting, but exhausting.
