During the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2013 that took place this weekend, Namco Bandai announced a new Sword Art Online game that is currently in development for PlayStation Vita, called Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.

The game will be taking place in an unexplored “Hollow Area” of a reborn Aincrad,  where the main character Kirito meets a mysterious vacant-eyed girl, who is expected to play a big role in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. The trailer also shows Kirito exploring and fighting with his partner, Asuna.

Namco Bandai’s previous game of the series, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment, a RPG with an MMORPG setting on PlayStation Portable, had impressively shipped over 200,000 units earlier this year.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is slated for release next year on PlayStation Vita.

the only SOA i will accept is on the PC using Occulus Rift! If its not made then i wont consider that SOA ! :3

now if only they can add a glove to act as a mouse and a neuro transmmiter to block motor reflexes and we are set to be trapped inside the game! ~~o

  • Dark Zerato

Why does Kirito always get into trouble with girls ?

    • PoweredByHentai

      http://i.imgur.com/5JLjluA.jpg

Because it is more amusing that way.

      • illuminati

        English titles please

        • PoweredByHentai

Kayaba: Have you ever wondered why you were popular with the ladies? It is because I programmed the game that way.

Kirito: What? Why would you do that?

Kayaba: A popular main character is more amusing that way.

          • hawk222

Wait, so he reprogrammed the various human women who were playing the game? That’s diabolical!

          • PoweredByHentai

Not really. He set conditions in the world that made it easier for the ladies to fawn on Kirito.

You can think of it as setting Kirito’s pheromone output to max and thereby making him irresistible to women.

          • hawk222

…Fair enough. Kind of like the way the bad guy from ALO could adjust how much pain players felt.

          • PoweredByHentai

Not exactly. ALO required direct access to people. The joke is more along the lines of Kirito being sprayed with cologne that screams of SEX and the girls going along with it. It’s a different sort of effect.

Kind of like how people have joked about Steve Jobs and his reality distortion field when it came to selling Apple products like the second coming of Christ.

    • DyLaN

One of the occupational hazards of being a MC.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      simply he’s the MC

    • darkbartz

The best part is by the Alicization arc, he lampshades this on his own. When he meets Eugeo (his partner and deuteragonist of the arc), he thanks the powers that be that Eugeo is actually a guy this time instead of a girl.

  • Raze

Is it continuation from the PSP one?

    I think I’ll get this…
I hope this time they can make the battle faster…And more variation to all like Eq, Skills, Location, and Enemies/Boss…

  • YoshEE

Oh I want to play SAO so badly. Hope they can release it oversea.

    • Dark Zerato

The VITA scene now reminds me of PSP scene in its last years. A lot of VNs and anime based games come out but were never localized.

      • British_Otaku

That’s how the PSP was the entire span of it’s life, as well as the DS, Wii, PS2, GameCube or any system which does well enough in Japan that licensed games are a good bet on it but the licenses don’t mean much over seas…

At least, here we can import most games including this.

  • deadMastershiro

Why don’t they just make an actual aincrad game. Where you can play through all the 100 floors.

    • InfectedAI

With multiplayer. An anime like Sword Art Online practically begs for a multiplayer game.

      • deadMastershiro

I know Kirito is awesome but he should be a side character or a character to follow in the story.

        • InfectedAI

Completely agreed. Make your own character from scratch and forge your own story.

          • Captain Levi

I agree with you two – I would like to create my own character and then follow the story or something.

          • Renaldi Saputra

you can, but in the social game..

          • Captain Levi

            … Social game? No thanks.

          • Renaldi Saputra

anw it’s a smartphone game and is only for Japan, so, well…

          • DyLaN

Not coming over, no point complaining.

          • Vash bane

lmao that’s what I thought before I clicked the article XD

    • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

I was just thinking the same thing. An MMO called Sword Art Online with all the features of the anime (cooking, setting up shops, housing, etc.) where you have to clear a dungeon on each of the 100 floors with NPC’s based off the anime itself, like Agil running his pawn shop, Lizbeth running her blacksmith and Kirito and Asuna help you through the dungeons.

      • deadMastershiro

I hope they use this idea before they stop make SAO games

  • InfectedAI

Hope it gets localized this time. Still looks closer to the slow boring combat from the PSP game rather than the fast paced battles from the anime. Probably still no multiplayer component either.

  • Amaterasu

I wish they’d just move away from the main characters as the playable characters, I’d like to play the game from the perspective of someone who isn’t a gary stu archetype.

  • leingod

Looks like Ragnarok Odyssey, but a lot more interesting.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      but no multiplayer

      • KuroRyuu913

        NO MULTIPLAYER?!
        WHY!!?!

        • DyLaN

Because it would be weird to see multiple Kirito running around?

        • Renaldi Saputra

can you imagine of 4 Kirito(s) playing around?

      • leingod

That’s weird… being called Sword Art Online and all.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          titleception

  • DyLaN

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=7szCd-Mzq7M
The english subtitle ver of SAO: HF trailer.

DEM CG CUTSCENE. The graphics looks good too. Will this have Sinon/Leafa/Strea though?

I’m curious, by reborn Aincrad do they mean the one in ALO or something else?

    • s07195

Kirito looks like he’s using his SAO avatar, so… IDK.

    • http://www.saiyanisland.com/ Fabian Ortiz

This version is pretty good, can we get this in the article?

      • DyLaN

Feel free to pass the video around~

  • Ryujin

I’d like to see a good chunk of unedited gameplay footage of this first, but it definitely looks like it has potential.

  • Notquitesure?

    YES

  • chibiwall

this and madoka it’s all i want

  • Heropon

This game will just full of fanservice like the last game

    • DyLaN

Most anime games are considered as fanservice game anyway. So why should this be any different? Fanservice in its original def means servicing the fans and it does not limited to bewbs. This sums up most of the spin-off anime games.

And most of us SAO fans enjoyed the alternate take on SAO plot in IM especially the way the existing character interact with Sinon/Strea/Leafa. That and I’m pretty sure some people would rather Kirito choose Silica/Lizbeth/Leafa/Sinon over Asuna and the game give you the opportunity to do it.

    • Chiupon

you’re not wrong though. that’s just how SAO is. this gameplay looks terribad so far but w/e

i bet there’s a button you can press where Kirito will level up like 20 times without anyone knowing and develop some new haxxor technique.

      • DyLaN

That what happen when you cut out the better part part of SAO LN and ppl refuse to see more of the better arcs that come after Fairy Dance and promptly summarize the anime in the most hateful way =_=

Seriously, Progressive/Phantom Bullet/Alicization (or so I heard) are miles above Fairy Dance.

I won’t say much abt IM gameplay since I won’t have the chance to play it but its does its job and its far frm unplayable/terribad.

        • Scrooge_McDuck

I just finished the Aincrad arc and it’s… kinda horrendous so far. Are you saying that the second arc is worse? Should… Should I just skip to the third?

How’s Phantom Bullet compared to the first arc?

          • DyLaN

            Its pretty good.

Then again I held the Aincrad arc in high regard so…. Have you tried Progressive LN/manga? Its a pretty much a rewrite of Aincrad arc starting frm the beginning. (Though it still left out some SS)

          • Scrooge_McDuck

Ah, I am a bit wary towards the reboot if it still covers the same basic story, but I’ll check it out. Thanks.

          • Lynx

Phantom Bullet is where it starts to develop its own identity. The characters are way better too, mainly because the protagonist of that arc isn’t necessarily Kirito. He shares the spot light. The end result? Some of the better stuff in SAO as a whole.

        • Chiupon

          it’s a bad anime bro
          hopefully the game is better???
i’m also not knocking the light novel. it is what it is. It’s aimed at 14 year olds pre sure.
and for something of that caliber it at least coherently tells its story and has a neat concept
was the execution of said concept good?
          no

          but hey it sells

        • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

The problem is in almost each arc they introduce a new girl, which will then be added into Kirito’s harem, I hate the fact that sao’s have a harem because he and asuna already a couple. If the writer wanted a harem he shouldn’t make kirito go out with any girls

          • Chiupon

considering how inconsistent Asuna’s personality is, i don’t understand how he could get bored with her.

        • InfectedAI

I’ll disagree. Infinity Moment looked bad. The gameplay is nothing like the show. It should’ve been hack and slash with RPG elements. Instead it’s dreadfully slow and boring. Also the production values seemed rather low. Especially the really bad animation. Unfortunately this looks like more of the same, though with possibly some improvements. It looks like they tried to speed up the combat a little, but it’s still the same system.

          • DyLaN

Well, I got wht I expected (which wasn’t that high in the first place) so I am not *too* dissapointed in it. This is still a “milking” game of sorts so I doubt they have a lot of budget for it unlike those FF/Tales games. I can’t say the same for everybody though.

I do heard that several Japanese sites have reported that its battle system is a modified version of the XDR-LMBS battle system from Tales of Xillia 2. Not sure is it true though.

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Did they release the PSP version in English? I SOO wanna play it and this one.

    • Renaldi Saputra

nope, but maybe you can search for fan translation

      • InfectedAI

There isn’t one as far as I know.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          ohh

    • InfectedAI

No. This probably won’t be localized either.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

Can’t we create our own character…. sigh Kirito is so overrated

    • Renaldi Saputra

      indeed

  • Captain Levi

I’m happy for the announcement, but… meh.

  • charles addow

That floor looks just like soul sacrifice’s floor on that church level i was like 0.0!

  • David García Abril

I hope they make a second season of the anime. I’m curious about the new storylines.

The Aincrad arc was pretty good, but now’s the time to move on. I know the crappy ALO arc doesn’t make it easy, but come on!

  • Aristides

Dear mother of God! Where! Where! Where is our localization announcement!!!! O_O Justice! I demand JUSTICE!!!!

  • Kelohmello

Meh. If it plays like the PSP game I’m not particularly interested. Too slow-paced, feels like a point and click MMO with all the waiting between actions.

  • Kaijumaster

his “partner” Asuna? You mean Wife? lol

  • Dark Zerato

There is a new SAO episode comming on Dec 31th.

Yui wants to see a whale, so Kirito and company challenge an underwater quest in Alfheim Online. But a surprising fact comes to light. Strangely enough, Leafa… Suguha can’t handle being in the water. In the real world, Asuna and the girls give Suguha a swimming lesson. Meanwhile, Kirito has a meeting with a certain someone.

    • Captain Levi

      … Ha?

      • InfectedAI

Wasn’t sure if he was joking or not. Sword Art Online – Extra Edition airs December 31st. It’s a recap of the anime with extra footage. Hopefully we get a season 2 announcement after that.

  • popo123

Lots of big vita games next year! I hope more bigger games get announced soon!

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

The Psp version was aaaaaawwwwwwwful, but this one looks awesome hope there is an US release

  • Zangetsu777

Any chance of this coming to the west.

  • Vash bane

before I clicked the article I thought it was a new game with out Kirito >.>
lol but anyway this was how I hoping the other had played but sadly it didn’t I don’t really care about graphics. just that gameplay which btw looks way better now
