The NeoGeo X Debacle, SNK Playmore And Tommo’s Statements

By Spencer . October 7, 2013 . 11:59pm

Last year Tommo licensed the NeoGeo name and games from SNK Playmore’s library to make the NeoGeo X. The handheld/dockable console went on sale bundled with Ninja Masters for $200. That was a high price tag for a retro system with emulation issues and an unsteady stream of software.

SNK Playmore terminated the license agreement with Tommo and ordered the company to stop selling the NeoGeo X and all related products. Tommo followed up with a statement saying they will continue to distribute the system and have the rights to do so until 2016.

Here’s what both companies have to say about the NeoGeo X.

Termination of the License Agreement between TOMMO Inc. and SNK PLAYMORE USA CORP.

To whom it may concern:

Please be informed that the License and Distribution Agreement between TOMMO Inc. and our company is terminated as of October 2nd, 2013.

The Licensed Products set forth in the agreement are as follows;

Terminated Licensed Products:

– NEOGEO X GOLD Limited Edition
– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 1
– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 2
– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 3
– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 4
– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 5

Upon termination of the License and Distribution Agreement, SNK has demanded that TOMMO Inc. immediately cease any and all manufacturing, distribution, marketing & promotion and selling of the Licensed Products.

In addition, SNK has demanded TOMMO immediately cease all sales of the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product being sold separately from the NEOGEO X GOLD Plug and Play Console, and remove the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product from store shelves and online retailers. In order to protect our intellectual property rights such as "NEOGEO" and “SNK”, decisive measures will be taken against all unapproved NEOGEO X products not subject to the License Agreement.

Regarding customer support for any/all of the Licensed Products, please contact the retail store / online retailer from which the product(s) were purchased.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,

Tommo Responds to the Wrongful Termination Claim by SNK PLAYMORE USA CORP

Worldwide publisher and manufacturer of games and accessories continues to support and distribute NEOGEO X

Los Angeles, Calif. – October 7, 2013 – Tommo, Inc., today responded to the press release that appeared on the SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp website last week. Tommo, Inc. denies that any breach of contract exists in their agreement with SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp and are continuing to support and market the popular NEOGEO X GOLD entertainment system, its accessories, and games. Due to the popularity of the system, Tommo and SNK extended the agreement earlier this year until 2016. Tommo fully expects this agreement to be honored by all parties. To date, Tommo has performed all of its obligations under its license agreement with SNK and is disappointed by SNK’s sudden and unjustified termination of the agreement. Tommo has demanded that SNK retract its press release and any attempts to terminate the license agreement.

“Tommo is still taking care of all customer service and product warranties in North America as are our master distribution partners, Success in Asia and Blaze in Europe,” said Jonathan Wan, CEO of Tommo, Inc.. “We’re continuing to sell NEOGEO X products, including the NEOGEO X GOLD System, Arcade Stick, MEGA PACK Volume 1 and Classics Volumes 1-5. The license agreement which allows Tommo to sell and market these products remains in effect.”

Tommo Inc. would like to thank the thousands of NEOGEO X fans who have shown amazing support for NEOGEO X in the last week and want them to know we will continue to support them, their NEOGEO X GOLD systems and products.

    What is going on O_O

  • Notquitesure?

    I really want one

If you played it as a kid, you will love it. Even if you didn’t I’m sure you’ll still have a good time. You can get PS1, Gameboy and a bunch of other games on it now, too by using these Neo Geo X tools that have been released.

  • leingod

The system was popular? I mean, I love NeoGeo as much as the next guy, but I read in countless places the NGX was a mess and that’s why I decided not to get it.

  • WyattEpp

Wow, this saga just keeps generating comedy gold.

  • michel

but… Is this product a success or a flop, really?…

  • Repede91

I don’t see how SNK benefits from this. They have such a small fanbase. A fanbase that threw out $200 just 1 year ago for a console whose newest games will be 9 years old now. To try and make their dedicated following eat that loss is pretty bad for retaining a following that isn’t that large.

I wonder why SNK was dissatisfied with their agreement?

  • Göran Isacson

Holy heck, the sordid story of this freaking system man. I hardly hear about it from the day it gets released, and when I do it’s some kind of legal disaster. Can only imagine that the SNK-fans who were looking forward to this are feeling mighty dissapoint right now.

  • RazeXI

I wonder how much of a collectors item this is now that they’re discontinuing..

  • fairysun

If only they release new games with the console….

  • Weeb

I got one really cheap from a friend. The one thing that’s worthwhile out of the whole console is the controllers. I was actually able to enjoy KoFXIII on steam now because of them, I don’t have to suffer from the xbox 360 D-pad.

Fuck you Tommo, you don’t even get back to peoples emails about your BUSTED firmware that you released on $79.99 SD cards. The Neo Geo X is the biggest piece of shit I’ve ever owned.
