New Pokémon Game Starring Pikachu Is In Development

By Sato . October 8, 2013 . 8:00pm

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are just around the corner and soon fans will be able to step into the series’ sixth generation. Meanwhile, The Pokémon Company already have another game in the works that will revolve around the franchise’s most iconic character, Pikachu.

In a recent producer’s summary on NHK, they summarize the immense popularity of the Pokémon franchise that boasts a total sales figure of 4 trillion yen (roughly $41 billion) from all of the Pokémon goods, anime series, movies, and games.

Additionally, it was revealed by Pokémon producer and CEO of The Pokémon Company Tsunekazu Ishihara, that development began on a new game this summer, that will feature Pikachu.

While having a game based on Pikachu may seem like a win-win situation for the company and the players, Ishihara fears that if they don’t do a good job, it could possibly hurt the popularity of the long-loved electric rodent.

According to the producer, the game will be about a boy who takes on the world using “playfulness” as a weapon.

So not a new PokePark, I take it. But still, this sounds like it could be interesting.

  • AuraGuyChris

They kind of bombed it multiple times with PokePark as it was Discovery Kids: Pokémon Edition with Pikachu.
If only they could muster up a(n old era) Final Fantasy-like plot instead.

    • Virevolte

Pikachu… the world is gonna be destroyed by some kind of tomato flan… Help us…!

    Hey You Pikachu 2?

    • ronin4life

      Sounds like it to me.

    • FirstaLasto

the 3ds has a mic, a camera, and gyrosensors, plus a portable game feels more personal, so it could work very well. personally i have very fond memories of that game during my childhood, so id be happy about such a game. that said, i dont know if id purchase it unless it was a cheap digital download. unless it ends up having much deeper gameplay than the original, that is. …man I sure am babbling here

      • akiko_sakuraba

It could definitely work, and a lot better than it did in the past. And from there, we could expand to other Pokemon? And maybe include human companions like gym leaders as well? Mikan and Ibuki? Please?

      • Shota

Could also be on Wii U.

    • Herok♞

This so much and maybe this time it would actually work well

    • I hope not, I have some awful memories of that game. Hey You Pikachu was a biggest waste of time. I much rather have a Pikachu action-platformer or something of that nature.

  • Maia Kasoya

    Remake of Pokemon Yellow?

    • FlobotingIt

Pokemon Yellow on 3DS, yes please.

    • I wouldn’t mind, but the more i think back on the Kanto region, the more boring it seems to me…

    • We’ve revisited Kanto 4 times already.

I definitely can’t take another Kanto remake.

  • KOTheWorld

    Here we go again…

  • hmmmm…playfullness as a weapon…

  • hazelnut1112

    Hey U Pikachu!!!

  • MasterScrub

So… am I the only one who’s sick of Pikachu?

    • At least it’s not more Charizard news?

    • Shady Shariest

    • John Diamond

I’m sick of Pikachu too. GameFreak stop making games based on this low tier pokemon

    • RichyGaming

Need more Magikarp or dem Mudkipz, dood

    • NimbusStev

I never liked him to begin with. They’ve got over 600 Pokemon to choose from, why does Pikachu get all the love?

      • British_Otaku

Hype from the anime (leading to Pokemon Yellow, spinoffs and frequent Smash Bros appearances and mascot status), being first generation and probably one of the only Pokemon that can sell millions of copies.

A Bidoof game might sell out of novelty, but you would be hard pressed to name a Pokemon which is immediately recognisable as one and could sell a game nearly on it’s own.

        • NimbusStev

Charizard or Mewtwo could possibly stand on their own, but you’re right, they are nowhere near as recognizable as Pikachu. The reason for that though is all of the heavy marketing he got back when the series started though. Imagine how differently things could have been had they chose another Pokemon as their posterboy. I wonder if the series still would have exploded with popularity the way it did…

    • Abend

      needs more raichu

  • They’ve already got the PokéPark games on Wii (which are actually really damn good) starring Pikachu, but in the case of this game, there’s mention of a boy, so it probably is going to be different from those titles.

Whether or not he’s a trainer remains to be seen, but I don’t think this is going to be a Hey You, Pikachu type affair. The part about “taking on the world with playfulness” almost makes it sound like a musical duet or something along those lines.

At the very least, I think it’s safe to assume that this game won’t involve battles.

    • Robgoro

Are the PokePark games actually good? I’ve always seen a them, walking through video game isles in the store, wondering if they’d be worth picking up (as a casual foray, at the very least).

      • I’ve actually only played the first one, and it was great. They’re really solid action-adventure games. Not overly complicated, but it’s fun as hell running around and getting into fights with other Pokémon that you see stomping around, or racing against them.

They start you out fairly easy, too. At first, I just had to do a couple of races against a few smaller Pokémon. Then, at one point, I had to chase after this one Pokémon that was running around and try to catch it. I can’t for the life of me remember which one it was now.

Then, once things started to ramp up a little, people began talking about this angry Scyther that was stomping about, so I tracked him down and fought him. That was fun as hell. Everything is real-time, so it’s pretty much an action game. All of the races and stuff take place in the actual world, too, so it’s not like they move you to a separate mini-game screen. There’s actual “exploration”.

The second one, I believe, is a bit more complex. Laura’s played that one, so you might want to ask her how it is.

edit: Actually, here’s a shameless plug to my old playtest for PokePark. I just realized I actually did manage to express a lot of what I liked about it in there:

Laura’s PT for the second one is here:

      • I loved the second one. If you want a Pokemon action-adventure where you control the Pokemon, then you should give it a whirl.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope its not a mini game mash up

  • Arrei

  • Pikachu: Path of Shockanance.

    • Rashid Al Rabah

A Fire Emblem styled Pokemon Game? Uhhh xD What?

      • Yes, Pikachu travels the land and liberating towns from horrible rebels!

        • Don’t forget! The games has two options: Nuzlocke or Casual! You can guess Nuzlocke will be like in this type of game.

  • Seraph

Am I the only person here who wants a new Pokemon Snap? The WiiU or 3DS would be perfect for it.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Definitely not!

I’ve wanted another Snap for ages now!

    • Robgoro

I was prying for a new Pokemon Snap when they first unveiled the Wii U – I have no doubt it’s crossed their minds, but…it’d sure be nice to hear what they have planned otherwise!

    • FirstaLasto

thats actually the first video game i ever owned, and to this day i still think its a wonderful piece of art. i would buy a new pokemon snap on the spot.

  • ZekeFreek

A Pokemon game starring Pikachu? Pfft, get outta town. No way! As if that’d ever happen.

  • Ferrick

“Hey you Pikachu! 2: Return of Seamen” ?

  • akiko_sakuraba

Apparently, in an interview with the creators, they’re afraid that Pikachu’s top rank of popularity will be taken away by another Pokemon in the next few generations. That’s probably why they’re making this move.

    • Kelohmello

      Hahahahahaha that’s a good joke.

      • akiko_sakuraba

Well, it’s true. That’s what they said in the interview.

  • Renaldi Saputra

I think pikachu should be changed by Dedenne..

    • J_Joestar

Emolga would be cuter and more distinct.

  • artemisthemp

    Pokemon Yellow 2?

  • Pika?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    HEY YOU PIKACHU 2, 3DS or wii-u

  • CirnoLakes

  • J_Joestar

They should make an action/adventure game and feature all of the Mascot Rodents.

Each one having unique mechanics like Emolga being able to fly/glide, Plusle/Minun being a team that can support each other, Dedenne is smaller than the others so it could probably squeeze into areas the others couldn’t reach, maybe toss in Marill even if it isn’t electric just so you could have someone who can swim, etc…

Can’t think of anything for Pachirisu that Pikachu couldn’t do itself though (at best it is marginally faster), same with Pichu as Dedenne fits the role of “The small one” better, so i would replace it with Marill for more gameplay variety.

    • ShootThatWay

Pachirisu can climb trees and taunt at dogs and hawks like real squirrels.
Oh wait, I don’t think taunting any of the canine Pokemon is a good idea.

Too bad, it can’t even learn taunt. :(

  • MrRobbyM

A new Pokemon Stadium game where the only usable Pokemon is Pikachu.

  • RichyGaming

    Pikachu: Chrono Phantasma

I wish that Game Freak would just develop a full-fledged Pokemon RPG for console. Why does it have to be limited to handhelds? I’m super stoked for X / Y, but I still can’t get over how grander the experience could be if it were on Wii U.

    • RisukuAozora

There were those 2 on Gamecube, right? It was pretty damn close to full-fledged. Well XD was at any rate.

      • MVRK HNTR

Yup! I loved XD: Gale of Darkness.

  • subsamuel01

Hopefully it’s better than mystery dungeon, that game was pretty bad. Most of the recent spin offs weren’t that great besides pokemon conquest, that game was amazing because it was basically the pokemon RPG meets fire emblem.
