Defeat Demons With The Power Of Photography In Square Enix’s Occult Maiden

By Eugene . October 9, 2013 . 4:34pm

You know there’s something up when even Famitsu says, “What the hell’s this?!?!” Well, we certainly can’t fault Square-Enix for trying their hand at anything and everything to see what new IP sticks.

Occult Maiden is their latest smartphone game, a “battle photo” RPG which stars players as Tsuchimikado Chikage, the elder brother of Shinto maiden sister Yui. Fighting alongside Chikage is game-fan Rengo and well-mannered Kurahashi Rikka. Together, you’ll have to beat down Aramitama ghosts and demons plaguing the lands of Kyoto.

To do so, players roll dice to move along the overland map—think the board game portions of Mario Party or any other dice-rolling board game like Monopoly—before going into battle against foes. Occult Maiden’s unique selling point is its twist on battles. While yes, it’s a full-3D fight between your female attendants and foes, Chikage has the traditional Shinto talisman of photography.

Because, magic… who cares? photography is a pretty recent invention anyway, right?

Anyway,  by hitting the touch screen at just the right moment, a la rhythm titles, players can take the perfect picture, which unleashes the true power of his Shinto talisman and augments his ally’s weaponry to deal damage to foes, sealing or banishing them.

Of course, the game doesn’t end there. There will be some 150-160 different weapons and armor to collect to gear up your woman as they travel the land, and almost all of the game will be rendered in 3D (Note: Bring a spare battery or portable charger and expect the game to be a battery drainer) with voiced dialogue, interactive conversation moments and more.

Occult Maiden’s music is done by EXIT TUNES, while the scenario is written by smash light novel/anime Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukinai’s (I Don’t Have Many Friends) Hirasaki Yomi for added talent. Square-Enix is betting pretty large on this with that lineup to make Occult Maiden a Japan hit, with a manga serialization also announced for Young GanGan magazine. There’s even an iPhone cover already announced.

Occult Maiden will be out for iOS this month, while the Android version is slated for a 2014 release.

If only it wasn’t a smartphone game. DX.

    • I thought it was going to be a 3DS game.

      • ShadowDivz

        I was thinking vita.

        • DanteMasamune

Is it so you can finally have some games to play on your Vita?

          • ShadowDivz

No… It just seemed like the type of game one would find on vita. Since Photo Kano is on the vita.

You enjoy being a dick? Just because it doesn’t have alot of games doesn’t mean the console is crap. It’s not like the damn thing is running windows 95.

          • DanteMasamune

Calm down. It was a joke. I too have a Vita. I was mainly making fun of the Vita’s predicament (PSP had the same problem too).

I’m sure in like a year or two the Vita might get some more great exclusives. I heard Capcom was working on a VIta exclusive Resident Evil game.

Plus the Vita TV in fact makes owning a Vita even all the better. Can the 3DS allow you to play the games on TV? I don’t think so.

          • ShadowDivz

Oh okay. Sorry i thought you were one of those “If it doesn’t have any games then the hardware sux” kinds of people.

I hope 2014 there is a huge spike in vita games….NOT JUST IN JAPAN!

The thing is, if you consider the japanese games there’s actually a good vita library out there.

          • DanteMasamune

Hmmm…who cares. People say the same thing about the Wii U but mark my words the Wii U might end up winning next gen when it comes to most games on the platform. Reason is developing games on the PS4 and Xbone is so expensive compared to PS3, Xbox 360, and even the Wii U many devs and publishers (mostly Japanese publishes/devs who aren’t AAA so companies like SEGA, Atlus, Capcom (though AAA due to their “money problems” developing games on the Wii U or Nintendo platforms would be far cheaper for them, Namco, and much much more) might flock to the Wii U or Nintendo to at least get their games out there……….or stick to mobile/handheld platforms.

Oh wow, I read the title completely wrong when I clicked on this…I thought it said pornography instead of photography.
That would have really made me wonder…

    • Aesma

      …done that, in doujin games.

    • DanteMasamune

“Defeat Demons withe the Power of Pornography”
……………now I think of it that does sound interesting.

This game’s premise isn’t much different from Fatal Frame. Remove demons with ghosts and cutesy anime girls with realistic looking Japanese females. Bam!

      • Cursingcomet

“Defeat Demons withe the Power of Pornography”
Sounds like the manga blade play

    • Same here. Actually it sounded great.

Square the drugs were funny before but now you just ODed, you need help

    • They’re drunk off of that android kool-aid.

  • sockem

Wow nagi sure keeps moving around companies since Ar tonelico. This time’s style seems quite different.

    • ShadowDivz

THANK YOU! I was wondering why the art seemed so familiar.

    • Kai2591

Yep. Good to see my favourite illustrator is still active :)
      and thanks for the wallpaper.

  • KuroNathan

    Err… what?

At least the quality of the mobile game this time has improved?

    • InfectedAI

How do you know? Was there gameplay in there?

      • biskmater

        err, plenty, I should think.

        • InfectedAI

Just rewatched the trailer. There’s maybe 10 seconds max of gameplay in there. Two small 5 second clips. That might mean something if you’re already familiar with the game, but to someone who’s never seen this before, that’ nothing. Didn’t tell me much of anything.

          • biskmater

It is a turn based rpg with action commands based on timing, hardly rocket science, but I suppose not everyone would grasp that quite so quickly.

      • KuroNathan

gameplay trailer, the addition of voices, bringing on a professional writer for a scenario.

Granted my previous experience with SE mobile games was that silly card collecting game where you shot the card. It was an obvious cash grab, so /any/ amount of effort would be an increase of quality to me.

    pantsu + pantsu + more pantsu (*_*) in not gonna lie…. i like… the …. MUSIC (^_^)

    • Kai2591

err…I don’t see any pantsu anywhere…..? Not a single pantsu in the video. Lots of girls, but no pantsu.

      • AkiraScare

Actually after min 1 Ur bombarded by it (^_^) but i guess its more of a ninja pantsu

  • 4shiki

    Will never be released outside of Japan. ;_;

    • AkiraScare

ur right (TT_TT) no pantsu for the rest of the world (TT_TT)

      • 4shiki

Well, at least there’s the manga adaptation and stuff…right? Right? :<

        • ShadowDivz

Yeah… but the game actually looks pretty interesting.

        • AkiraScare

  • biskmater

The execution actually looks pretty decent…

  • ShadowDivz

The maiden sister Yuu has the same voice actress as Musubi from Sekirei.

I’d never forget that innocent, loyal and energetic voice.

On topic, i kinda expected this to be on Vita. Sounds kinda fun, now il never get to play it.

    • Kai2591

      Saori Hayami?

Now that i think about it, Musubi wears a shrine maiden outfit too…

      • ShadowDivz

I know right? That’s the main thing that tipped me off. I recognized the voice but couldn’t place a name till i realized the outfit is shrine maiden.

  • Servant BerserCAR

oh man, EXIT TUNES ftw <3

  • Kai2591

Wait, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this game based on the manga? The article makes it sound like it’s the other way around….

    btw that’s a lot of 3D for a mobile game…

  • Dark Zerato

Why does SE keep making those damn mobile games. It has been very long time since last time we saw a new franchise on a handheld or console.

  • I think I need a Cliff Notes version of that explanation of the game. I’m all, “…er…what now?” O_o
