Drakengard 3 Is Flying To North America Next Year

By Spencer . October 9, 2013 . 9:43am

Drakengard 3, a prequel to the Drakengard series and Nier, will be localized for the West, Square Enix have announced. You play as Zero and Intoner who can control magic by singing. Zero’s mission is to kill her younger sisters with help from her dragon Mikhail.

We’ve been following Drakengard 3 very closely and we will have more to share soon since Siliconera spoke to Drakengard producer Takamasa Shiba earlier today.

Drakengard 3 will be released in 2014 on PlayStation 3 for $49.99.

Best news I’ve heard all day! I mean seriously…

  • Lemon

I’m sure many fans will be thrilled, but I’m more concerned about how much they *might* censor. Assuming they don’t censor anything even, I wonder how the masses will react to Zero’s personality and character as a heroine.

    • Thrasher429

gah don’t jinx it already. Hope nothing gets censored though >.>

    • Anime10121

All previous Drakengard games have been rated M, and also contained questionable material within the games. Unless there are cutscenes of Zero screwing her disciples or something, I see no need for anything to be cut. Besides, the Cero system is much harsher than the ESRB anyways, and I dont see Square Enix allowing anything TOO severe in the game anyway that would hinder its release.

      • Lemon

While I have no doubt this will be rated M, some of the themes that may pass in Japan will definitely not pass in the West, I believe. For instance, from what we know of Zero, she’s very promiscuous and I think it was mentioned that her 4 male companions also substitute as her sexual partners. Among them is a kid, the shota.

        • Anime10121

Promiscuity in and of itself won’t hurt the ratings, it’s actual visible body parts or acts of sex itself that would be censored. Trust me, if something like Ar Tonelico can get away with being released here (with its stripping Lolis) this should have no prob. Like I said, I doubt SE would put any actual sex in the game, especially since it’s releasing in the west. As far as Zero and her promiscuity goes, I’m sure as far as the games concerned, it will just be her talking naughty (now novels on the other hand…).

          • Lemon

Like I said, since a localization is confirmed, I’m just considering what alterations/changes to the dialogue, characters or plot might happen. Even if there isn’t any sex in the game, themes considered taboo (Incest, Paedophilia etc) that might (or might not) be in Drakengard 3 will definitely be altered in *some* way. I’m not the kind of extreme person against censorship 100% or something, but it’s a shame to not be able to enjoy the game/story as how the creator intended it to be.

          • Anime10121

Oh well I guess I can kinda understand your frustration there. As things of that nature will probably be toned down a bit in the localized version.

But even so, you’ll definitely be able to see the subtle hints of stuff like that in the game. Just like in the first game, you could tell the heroine had the hots for her bro Caim.

I guess alls I’m saying is that even if it’s slightly toned down, a lot of the stuff will still get across even if it’s a bit more subtle.
I’m just happy to get the game perio, though I do hate the triple standard when adult themes are ok in movies/books, but games are taboo.

let’s see what the feminist will think of Zero :p

    • Shippoyasha

I hope they don’t cave into the social justice witch hunting that is so popular with gaming media and Tumblr feminists. If they do, it sets a dangerous precedent in a case for censoring creative content and they won’t stop at one game. Not to mention some of these games are fully intended to be risqué and unconventional.

I love the unflinching depiction of the violent, sexual and crazy back stories in this title. Games pushing boundaries is beautiful and underappreciated.

  • SirRichard

Actually legitimately surprised that this is happening, I had figured Square Enix just wouldn’t bother with it at all. Glad we’re not missing it after all.

  • DesmaX

    PS: Only digital in Europe

    • Go2hell66

unfortunately europe gets screwed once again, oh well shouldn’t be too hard to import

  • Ferrick

    who’s intoner ?

    • Syde Tokai

      the dragon

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

the official english name of Utauai (Songtress Goddess)

      • Ferrick

i know, it’s a rather weird name lol, though the article kinda did some minor grammar mistake; “You control as Zero and Inktoner…”

  • Sapitntapit

Oh, I didn’t know this was a prequel.
That makes me happy because I haven’t been able to get my hands on the first 2 and this one is looking really sweet.

    • Anime10121

You can get both used on Amazon for less than 30-40 dollars. And they are well worth it :)

      • Sapitntapit

Yeah I saw that, it’s more of an issue with money right now.

        • Anime10121

Oh I can definitely understand that bro.

  • KoRLumen

  • neocatzon

Now, I’m curious with their English voice. I mean they’ve done great with previous entries and Nier,

  • Randgriz

I was SO wrong in saying that S-E probably wont localise this and boy ami i glad to be wrong in this instance.

  • Randgriz

Im going to play the previous 2 again~ eee

  • Dark Zerato

I hope the game will have dual audio.

    • Mazdian

EDIT: Aryatta just pointed out that he meant two separate versions, not dual audio. (╥_╥)

According to a message left in the comments of the EU Playstation Blog, it will be.

“I know it’s not what you want to hear, but Drakengard 3 will only support English and Japanese languages, with English and French subtitles also available.” – Lee Williams

      • Dark Zerato

      • Aryatta

That’s not what he meant, he followed up the statement with

“Sorry the European version of Drakengard 3 will not come with Japanese voice overs. I meant that there will only be two versions: a Japanese and an English version. French subtitles will be included on the European release. But it’s still quite a while from launch and anything can happen between then and now.” – Lee Williams

        • Crazy_O

So If I want the japanese dub I have to order the NA version?

          • Aryatta

For NA, it has not been confirmed about dual audio. we’ll have to wait and see till Square Enix says about the matter.

  • DivinePhoenix69

Alright! I didnt really like the first two games tbh, but i did enjoy the heck out of Nier so im more than willing to give this one a shot.

  • Genjo

well i had feeling it will be localized did some Research and find out every game THAT was created by cavia was localized plus the other two was also localizedso it was matter when it was Announce.

  • Never play the first two but I plan on getting this day one.

  • Go2hell66

watch this game get censored so badly its not even funny

  • Ladius

Fantastic news, it’s day one for me :) It’s interesting to notice the difference between this localization choice and Square Enix’s recent policies regarding handheld localizations, especially considering Drakengard is a niche series.

  • Suriel Cruz

It made my day. “Arigatou’!” ^ ^

  • Mazdian

This is absolutely amazing news! T^T

I still have to import that gorgeous 10th Anniversary Box Set, but it’s great to know that everyone gets to enjoy this game as well!

  • Brimfyre

Can I just say Thank You to Siliconera for constantly being on top of news for this game. I think you all deserve some credit at getting this localized.

This game was largely ignored by the “bigger” gaming news sites, but you all have been relentless with your coverage. As a casual fan of previous games in the series, your coverage of it made me salivate over it and will now be a day one purchase without a second thought.

You guys really make other gaming sites look bad.

    • Not to say I don’t appreciate SE’s reporting but it wasn’t ‘largely ignored’. In fact, SE was a little late to the party with regards to Destructoid. VG247, GameSpot, IGN and others have also mentioned this over the course of the months as well as the announcement today on PS Blog.

  • YES!!! Hope we’ll see them put up Drakengard 1 & 2 on PSN, more support for the series, the better. Also, want that JP Box Set. Make it happen, SE.

    • KazukiNanbu

or maybe an HD collection!!!!….ok no,thats not gonna happen

      • Not gonna happen indeed but damn I’d love to see that!!

        • KazukiNanbu

it would be cool if they also release Nier Replicant here in america….keep dreaming

  • Freud_Hater

  • Ryan Chiu

Holy shit, so excited! I wonder who they’re going to get to voice the characters… And if they’re going to release an LE…

  • anarchy_panty

I should probably get around to playing those copies of Drakengard and Nier I have laying around, shouldn’t I?

  • mojack411

All my prayers have been answered. Now to just buy my PS3 finally.

  • Dagobert

I hope we get a collectors edition version similar to the Japanese one as well.

    • deadMastershiro

I’ve got $300 dollars for that one.

  • ShadowDivz

Still great news! I wonder if there will be censorship…

  • British_Otaku

Haven’t played the other Drakengard games or Nier, but I’m interested in following them all up when this gets released especially if it is uncensored…

    • Shippoyasha

Nier is a must play of this generation if you want a heart warming story and some of the wildest plot twists in gaming. Seriously, it should be a required play for any serious RPG gamer.

      • British_Otaku

What order would you recommend I play them in?

At this point, I don’t have a PS3 (though I have over a dozen games for it) and I’m likely to buy a cheap PS2 to catch up on stuff if Drakengard 1 + 2 are worth looking up again.

I’m considering Nier as well of course, but given that it seems to be a spinoff (based on the fifth ending of Drakengard according to Wiki), I may want to see the originals first.

        • Shippoyasha

Yeah. Drakengard 1 and 2 on the PS2 should be your first games while you can play Nier on PS3 or 360. I would save Nier for last because it leaves a lot of emotional impact.

          • British_Otaku

            I see… I’ll fish around for a PS2 then.

        • Göran Isacson

I will say this: Drakengard 1 is the only game in the Drakengard series I have actually played, and the game itself? Not that fun a GAME. Think Dynasty Warriors, except Caim is SLLLOOOWWWW as mollasses and it takes very long to get anywhere. The combat is basic, but functional enough. Some challenges here and there, but nothing too grand. The graphics are also a bit too much brown and very desolate, not even beautiful desolation, just kind of low-budget.

It’s the experience of Drakengard that’s worth it, more than the actual gameplay. Seeing all the insanity and depravity unleashed, even if it’s a bit too much for it’s own good and it suffers from some censorship. Also, wanting to see all the endings require you to power up all weapons in the game, and there are about over 60 of them. It’s masochism. Pure masochism. If you ca nget it for cheap I recommend it, but I do NOT guarantee that you will enjoy it.

Now if you want a game that is both pretty enjoyable as a game AND has a story that’s a bit more wellwritten, thought out and coherent than drakengard, I recommend Nier. I seriously do recommend Nier the most, simply because it is by FAR the best game. If you CAN weather Drakengard first then more power to ya, but if your time is limited Nier should be the number one choice, even if it’s story is only tangentially related to the Drakengard verse (and even then, you will only get the scenes in Drakengard 1 that connects it’s story to Nier if you go through said masochism tango and get all endings).

Also Drakengard 2 is, I’ve heard, more fun to play than Drakengard but also less interesting story-wise. But I haven’t played it myself, only heard it, soo yeah. Make what you will of this info.

          • British_Otaku

            Thanks for the full answer…
I don’t mind spending a lot of time with games and usually like to start with the first installment but I’ll probably take your word for it and start with NieR, but do the masochism tango that it is leveling up 60 weapons for all endings… >_>

I hope it doesn’t feel as pointless, dull and overall unfun as unlocking Amy in Sonic Advance 2. Amy is one of the more challenging characters to play as in the SAdva series, usually lacking a spindash or spinning when she jumps… Advance 2 (a bad game in an interesting sense but still bad) had the bright idea of making her an unlock for when you finish the game completely, all emeralds with each of the other characters Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Cream…

Probably after a little while, I’ll grow to like the mechanics even if I usually want my action to have a bit of meat. :P

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, well I will say that in order to get all weapons and train them up, have a FAQ ready- it’s going to be a slow process and finding some of the weapons on the stages involve a TON of hoops to jump through. Can’t say I’ve ever played Sonic Advance 2, but I can say that getting all the endings will require patience and, at least for me, replaying the one stage that gives the most weapon XP over and over and over and over and well, you get the idea.

      50 bucks. Perfect!

  • AnimeRemix

    So wait…

Is this retail in NA and digital in EU? A bit confused on this, so if anyone can help me out, I’ll appreciate it!

    • DesmaX

Both on NA, Digital only in EU

      • AnimeRemix

Ah, gotcha. Thanks! Pre-ordering right now then. ^o^

  • fool

Getting this instead of Lightning Returns ~

  • Demandred

Can’t wait to tear through ish again while listening to a majestic soundtrack! <3

  • Chim_era

Okay my sound stood a little bit too loud for that first sentence. Scared the sh*t out of me :3

Epic game though. Looking forward to it :)

  • Blackburn7

THANK GOD! I’m dying to play this game since i loved NieR so much. Awesome news!

  • Zangetsu777

I can’t wait for this game.
And hopefully Square-Enix will make a Drakengard 1&2 HD Collection for PS3

  • AnimusVox

  • Damn, now this is a surprise. Now I feel like I should play Drakengard 2 just to be up to speed with the series.

  • MrTyrant

Another good year is coming, is good to be alive.

  • Need to play the first two for this. Any chance of seeing them on PSN to celebrate?

  • Devinja

I am excited to play the game but dread the inevitable soul crushing moments.

    • Shippoyasha

Best soul crushing moments in gaming to boot. Nier had like 20 of those moments. Seriously.

      • Devinja

Yeah some heavy stuff in these games. The world is so grim.

  • deadMastershiro

Now we just need to confirm the box set.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Fucking WOOP.

  • Shinobikens

Now if only they put 1 and 2 on PSN

  • landlock

Guess I’ll import it from America then like Hatsune Miku for the retail version.

    • deadMastershiro

I’ll pray for you because not having this game is a sin.

  • I’ve been following the news on this game and been contemplating importing it, but I’m glad it’s announced for the west.

I’ve never played a Drakengard before and heard the first game’s script had gone through some alterations, so I hope this game won’t suffer the same. I want to experience the characters in all their twisted glory that the previews have been alluding to >:]

  • Mir Teiwaz

I’m curious to see how this game leads into NieR and super excited to see it’s actually coming across the big pond.

  • deadMastershiro

HA HA HA! I keep watching this and thanking everything i can think of.

  • Valtiel Ikari

  • I rarely say this since I’m not a great fan of their main franchises, nor I like being trolled all the time, but…

  • “Ahem”

First I’d like to thank Siliconera for the news, Square Enix for localizing the game, all of the fans of the series, and God lol.

High five everyone, high “Five” lol =^_^=

  • Martian Wong

  • Prithivi

Oh God how I envy you! It seems we Euros only get a digital release :(
I Guess I’ll have to import it.

P.S: SE, now it’s the perfect time for a digital release of the first two games!

  • Alexander Aubert

so drakengard 3 is connected to drakengard 1 and 2?

    • Taylor Wills

It’s a prequel to the first drakengard

    • British_Otaku

A prequel based on what people have said here, I can’t say whether you should start with 3 or the experience would be better in order as most games are.

  • Warboss Aohd
  • Rock Volnutt

    • British_Otaku

Bravely Default coming to NA/EU (2014/2013 respectively), with the advanced For the Sequel version with one hundred upgrades including English + Japanese voices and a gazillion subtitle tracks for it? That and they have Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV/Versus 13 coming around looking pretty snazzy as well.

I don’t play many SE games, but they have had a very good year from even an outsider’s point of view.

      • Daniel blue

Bravely Default is being published by Nintendo overseas. Square didn’t as much as raise a finger for its localization.

Dragon Quest VII remake apparently not coming as well, but at least we have lots of classic Final Fantasy remakes for Android, right?

FF XV and KH3 are guaranteed blockbusters, it’s obvious they’re going to promote them. What really hurts is they pretty much ignore everything else.

      • Rock Volnutt

Yes, but Square has no involvement in localizing Bravely Default; Nintendo’s localizing it, not Square. And you’re ignoring the issues the game has; For The Sequel has some egregious pay2win mechanics that I’d expect from a “Free to play” title. Some of Square’s other blunders involve their resorting to crowdfunding, refusing to localize any of the 3DS Dragon Quest games, and lazily porting almost the entire Dragon Quest series to iOS. And that’s to say nothing of the decision to do an even poorer job with FFVI, if it’s anything like FFV iOS earlier this year. KH3 and FFXV are not coming out this year either, and while the former was announced and the latter reannounced, that doesn’t mean much considering how it’s been seven years and this is the third or so trailer for it and nothing has yet materialized. I don’t know why you’re saying they’ve had a good year when in reality, other than announcing the localization of Drakengard 3, they haven’t.

        • British_Otaku

My view on Bravely Default is somewhat similar to my feelings on Megaman in Smash Bros. If the original publisher didn’t agree to let another company handle their material, we wouldn’t have gotten it.

Capcom got some points there (even if I would take Megaman Legends 3 or frequent Megaman games again over him in Smash Bros) and Square get some points here for not giving us the original version of BD, letting Nintendo handle it, supporting the limited edition in Europe and so on. A lot of the issues with localising is at the root company which owns the whole thing.

On the pay to win thing… I’m not ignoring that, I’ve never heard of it, I wouldn’t mind knowing more before making my purchase in December. I figured it was your usual RPG… >_>

On the crowdfunding, they seem to have an interesting take which may lead to them getting money before games are made when publishers are supposed to pay out or we may see more projects we want happen. It’s 50/50 till it happens.

It’s definitely not cool though that they are making us wait so long for the 3DS Dragon Quest games though and the iOS DQ games too if they are really poorly ported… >_>

A game doesn’t need to come out to contribute to how much people respect a company. People praised Project H.A.M.M.E.R (cancelled/vaporware tech demo) as part of E3 2006 for Nintendo. We hadn’t seen Versus 13 in ages and thought it was cancelled, seeing a trailer, it being separated from XIII, confirmed platforms and being it’s own installment is pretty damn awesome (less likely to be cancelled or left in Japan). KH3 is a similar case.

Again, I’m not the biggest follower of SE, but they have had a good year from a hype and announcements perspective. Of course, they made a few mistakes and changed their CEO due to their financial woes yeah.

  • Brotato Chip

    best news ever

  • Enjoy your dubs, meh

    • revenent hell

You know as bad as most are some people prefer them to subs…. Being able to hear a game in ones own language isn’t always a bad thing (not that it matters to me cause I game perpetually on mute but eh) Its just kind of is irking when people say that about games when I think its just lucky to even get it released in my country.
There was a small chance they might not have had an American release according to some

      • kthanxyousuck

Agreed. I’m not particularly bothered by voice-overs. If it keeps me from having to read the tiny text, give me the high pitched voices.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s not start this war just to find something to flame about. Thanks.

      • revenent hell

        Sorry about that!
I didn’t plan to make a big deal or anything with my comment in return, it takes two and all…. If the post was about dubbing or not I would have avoided it like the plague but since it wasn’t……

        • M’iau M’iaut

No worry. The community has the right to express their concerns as you nicely did. It’s Square, suddenly expecting a smaller title to get a language treatment that has never been their focus is unlikely at best.

          • Ferrick

i think i’m much more concerned with what is going to be censored =/, hopefully it won’t be 4kids level of censoring

          • revenent hell

…..and the downside has been voiced.
I was trying to pretend they wouldn’t censor anything….Its just not really fair for a number of reasons, my personal one is I am an adult I can handle a game that throws more at me than mp/hp balls…

          • M’iau M’iaut

IDK, have we seen any shots yet where Zero is smoking a cigarette?

          • Ferrick

no, but there’s blood everywhere, they might change it into strawberry jam

          • revenent hell

I’m not saying this because I’m a fan of Drakengard but with the following it has, even being a smaller tittle, one would “hope” they would want to do right by it in that department… Though that’s probably like assuming the sun will suddenly change to be a sparkly shade of purple just for fun. tomorrow….

  • revenent hell

Oh I want to pre order this nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww… I cant even adequately describe how happy this news has made me!

  • schwarzmasa

Oh shit, that’s a nice surprise. Guess I’ll be buying twice, as I’ve already got the Japanese version preordered.

  • Jordan Coleman

There’s some vague wording. Can anyone at Siliconera confirm that this is’nt a SE store exclusive?

    • revenent hell

Hmm. I kind of think if it was they would have mentioned it, if they where made aware of it, though I don’t really see the “vague” wording myself. It seems to be a standard “This game is getting a NA release” statement thus far.
As per the norm I’m sure once more details are known they will share them.

      • Jordan Coleman

        From the press release

” Drakengard 3 will be available for $49.99 next year on the PlayStation®3 system and for digital download on the PlayStation®Network and the Square Enix Online Store. Starting today, players can pre-order the game at the Square Enix Online Store.”

        And other pr images.

        And then the website

The pr dosen’t mention other retailers but dosen’t say exclusive anything.

But the other two could either mean just the ability to pre-order is exclusive or that in fact is a Xenoblade case and only SE store exclusive. Which given that this is a niche game, maybe? I doubt it though.

        • Ferrick

the physical copy for NA is SE store exclusive

          • Jordan Coleman

            Is that confirmed? Where?

          • Ferrick

          • Jordan Coleman

Well yes, the pre-order is. Thats not up for debate. I’m asking is it going to be a “Xenoblade” and only be sold through SE forever. No physical release at Best Buy or Gamestop when it comes out.

I’m not sure if there is a precedent for PS3 games doing that though, well maybe Under Defeat’s US release?

          • Ferrick

that part i have no idea, that’s why i said temporarily, because chances are, it may or may not be SE store exclusive. if it’s the latter, then they’re just saying it’s exclusive so that people order from their online store and when they have enough orders, it will be open, but alas, a theory is just a theory

        • revenent hell

I was just looking up some stuff about this myself…….. Curiosity and all.
I normally go threw amazon but they can be so slow at times to put up a pre order but Gamestop doesn’t have it either….Thus far

          • Jordan Coleman

Gamestop can be pretty late in putting up things. I forgot what game it was this year-DoA5Ultimate maybe-but they don;t always have everything up super quick. And maybe now it’s just exclusive.

          • revenent hell

Yeah I think amazon had a particular game I wanted up Before they did…
Last time I contacted Amazon about a game pre order they told me they themselves couldn’t find it on the site( duh hence my inquiry) so that probably meant they wouldn’t be getting it… A week later the pre order was up…
I really wonder about customer service with them

  • Whoops time for reverse harem heroine XD

I’m not surprised considering the last 2 Drakengard games and its spin off Neir came to the west.

I don’t know the details but if this game with a niche audience in the west and a more Japanese appeal can come to the west Capcom should do the same with Sengoku Basara (4).

  • Slayven19

I guess I”ll be picking this up on release day as well.

  • Dagobert

Oh shit I just realized the kid’s voice at the end is the damn dragon. Also I hope Square Enix don’t butcher the localization and they don’t create an English R&B song for the game to replace this song.

    • ZenTzen

why would they the guy doing the music is the same guy that did Niers and Niers OST is amazing

  • Randgriz

Digital or Retail, i dont really care so long as i can play it in english.

  • SMT

Heh, at long last, calling it “Drakengard” is actually justified, instead of the Japanese title. I wonder if the guys at Siliconera knew about localization, or they just chose to always call it that simply due to optimism and convenience…

I can only remember Drag-On-Dragoon being noted stateside very early in the process of bringing the first game over. I think Square was quite aware that title was not going to work well here.
