Sony’s Japan Studio Team On Freedom Wars And Rain Is Making A PS4 Game

By Spencer . October 9, 2013 . 12:55am

image One of the divisions in Sony’s Japan Studio is working on Knack, which is being developed internally. There’s another team called the Japan Studio External Development Department group that partners with other companies to create games like Soul Sacrifice (developed by Marvelous AQL) and rain (developed by Acquire).

The External Development Department is working on a PlayStation 4 title, according to a report from Famitsu. This group also has Badman G, Destiny of Spirits (Q Entertainment), Over My Dead Body 2 (Alfa System), Freedom Wars (pictured), and Soul Sacrifice Delta in production.

An exciting sequel to Rain called : “Drought”?

    • Raze

      How about Flood?

      • Shady Shariest

Nah, it would require a spin-off “Dam”

        • Syn

          “Lake” maybe???

          • Shady Shariest

            Oh…My…God… It’s a full circle!
The Rain made The Lake, which was held back by a Dam so that there were neither Flood’s or Drought!

Would be nice if we could get around to seeing some Freedom Wars gameplay soon.

    • JoJo_649

Aggree, I wonder why sony didn’t show anything of it at TGS.

      • Ryujin

While I was eager to see Freedom Wars at the TGS, I think I can kind of see why it wasn’t shown.

We had announcements for Phantasy Star Nova and Soul Sacrifice: Delta, two games that already appeal to a lot of the crowd that’s interested in Freedom Wars. God Eater 2 isn’t too far away from its release in Japan, either. Maybe they decided to wait a bit longer so they can give us a big reveal when people aren’t already going wild over other, similar games.

  • AuroraXIII

I don’t understand why their External Development Department is developing Freedom Wars by themselves. o.o

    • neocatzon

With a name like Japan Studio External Development Department I expect it would be co-developed, but don’t take my words.

Freedom Wars Spring 2014? One can dream

  • Cursingcomet

I’m gonna assume that freedom wars is going to be a big game like god eater so localization will probably take half or maybe 1 year before western gamers get to play it in english. But since it’s SCE Japan Studio the chances of a worldwide release is a 100 percent guarantee which is a great thing.

    • Dark Zerato

Sony must do something to save VITA in the west. VITA is getting tons of games in JP, but so little of them get to be localized.

      • JoJo_649

THIS!! after Tearaway, the Vita is practically dead over here, instead of promoting indie wave after indie wave, they should formally announce Gravity Rush 2 and Freedom Wars, then localize Phantasy Star, get serious with third parties to get titles like Bioshock, Metal Gear and Dissidia Final Fantasy, and finally revive some old IP’s like Medievil and Wild Arms, all of that would be sure to get the console more attention.

        • Dark Zerato

The fact is that western companies don’t like VITA that much. There is very little of western games are released on VITA. On the other hand, getting game to be localized is a pain in the @ss. Even VNs would do if they are localized. Big companies focus on the console and the next gen, so VITA doesn’t get much love.

          • JoJo_649

Well, Ken Levin has commented on how 2K and Sony don’t get on good terms with Bioshock Vita, even if he really wants to make it happen, but what about their first party studios? sure, they’re all about the PS4, but with the PS3 and PSP, the latter received more support than the vita has in less time and done by less studios.

    • TheExile285

Soul Sacrifice was a big game but it only took a month versus Japan to get it

      • Cursingcomet

A month to finish translating a game? They must have alot of translator to finish the job.

        • Jordan Coleman

It did’nt take a month. The localization was being worked on while the game was.

          • foureyes oni

they need to do that on a lot more games.

      • Hraesvelgr

No doubt the localization process was started well before the game was out in Japan. It’s not really unheard of, even a text-heavy game like Suikoden V only had a month between its Japanese and North American releases.

  • 禍津水木

Cover image reminds me of Soul Sacrifice

    • Jordan Coleman

      Because it is Soul Sacrifice….

      • JoJo_649

        Wrong, it’s Freedom Wars..

        • Jordan Coleman

The cover image, not the image in the actual article. The image on the front page leading to this article is from Soul Sacrifice.

          • JoJo_649

            Ah, that one, yep, sorry.

  • TheExile285

I wanna see some Freedom Wars gameplay, Sony….

  • Jordan Coleman

Hope it’s an actual full fledged game and not some download title or something.

  • alangato

    Hmmm, that is really nice!

They recently partnered with Alfa System to do a sequel to a +- old game( yeah I know that there is a port on PSP, I think) , so I’m really excited to know if they are going to co develop more games with old partners…
