Dragon Quest VIII iOS And Android Port Is In Tall Screen Mode

By Spencer . October 10, 2013 . 11:54pm

Square Enix is bringing the Dragon Quest library to smartphones starting with the original Dragon Quest all the way to Dragon Quest VIII. The iOS and Android version is actually the first port of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and this version uses the same graphics as the PlayStation 2 release.

The big difference is Dragon Quest VIII for smartphones is in "tall screen" mode. It appears players use a virtual analog stick to walk around the world. In battle, Dragon Quest VIII feels more like earlier Dragon Quest games since the monster models are tiny compared to the size of the menu.

Still, it’s neat that soon you’ll be able to play Dragon Quest VIII wherever you are.

    PS2 graphics. That’s nice.

    • Ace Trainer Chris

Yet it seems to run like ass.

      • Barrylocke89

Have you actually seen it in action?

        • MakoSoldier7

there is i clip of it running at destructoid, and it is chugging. that said, anyone with an ounce of common sense could tell it was such an early build, and judging it based off it’s fidelity at this point would be pointless.

          • Barrylocke89

I suppose the run speeds will come down to S-E’s developers. We know the most modern devices can run it and (with alterations for touchscreen like what’s shown) it should be able to run fine. If the development team can’t get the port to work, that’s another issue entirely.

I just wanna note for those interested, Amazon Games twitter actually acknowledged these existed, along with the FFVI phone port.

Given how they don’t /usually/ acknowledge Japanese-only things, I guess there’s a good chance to reason that we will be getting these.

  • icecoffemix

So there’s no landscape mode? Seriously?

  • Randy Marsh

The models look good and I’m surprised how decent the world map looks, er wait what, tall screen mode?! That’s it, NO, fire up your pitchforks and torches everyone, we’re going to have an angry mob at Square-Enix headquarters!

  • d19xx

    Looks like Temple Run…

  • 3PointDecoupage

This just seems cruel. DQ8 deserves so much better.

    • John Diamond

Square enix have literally been ignoring calls for a console re-release

      • flower234

I’d rather have DQ8 HD than any Final Fantasy that was on PS2

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

YES It does :{ much better

    • djnforce9

Emulating it through PCSX2 is your best bet for an HD remake of the game. It looks absolutely fantastic! Other than that, I welcome the iOS port for on the go. You’ll be going back to that game quite a lot though as it has over 50 hours of content (possibly up to 100 if you are a completionist).

I… actually like the look of that. Though it confirms one thing: JRPGs can be played with one hand. :D
Not that I mind though. I probably won’t be playing this game ever and while I would prefer it running on some higher-end PC (PS2 version with emulator), I also wouldn’t mind giving this a go.

    • Exkaiser

They’ve been making one-handed RPG controllers for years! Also, a lot of SNES RPGs used L and Select to open menus and confirm things, so they could be played one-handed. I know Earthbound did this.

  • Barrylocke89

You know, after getting over the initial shock, I actually REALLY hope Square Enix America gets this out to the West. The Localization is already done, Dragon Quest 8 is still pretty gorgeous, and it’s turn based combat so the loltouchscreen issue won’t be much of an effect here.

I know they’d probably charge up the wazoo for it though, at least 20 bucks (the price of TWEWY Solo Remix) If that’s the case it’d be a little cheaper to get the ps2

I also wonder if they would cut all of the beautiful voice acting if it came to the West.

  • Longsun_Zhao

I’m in for this. I’ve had a blast playing Final Fantasy games on my Nexus 4 and i’m sure this will be even better.

I saw Dragon Quest, clicked the link, saw “iOS and Android” and completely went into Ignore Mode. Call me when they add “English” to a Dragon Quest headline.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Not gonna lie, it looks pretty cool. Maybe its cause I don’t like DQ so I’m not as emotionally attached, though I do love the look of DQ8 in general.

  • Ståle Laastad

if the final release has native ipad retina resolution, and smooth framerate, il bite.

  • http://www.fogalchemist.com/ caleb1993

This actually looks nice. While not as good as a console, or handheld (Vita) rerelease of the game, I’d be more than willing to pick this up if it were to come over to North America. Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favourite games of all time, so seeing it get a rerelease in any form is exciting. Now let’s see if it is actually a good rerelease.

  • Brimfyre

I hope it’s damn easy. I never finished VIII. I got to the land covered in snow and then my save got corrupted and have never gone back to finish it.

I want to be able to breeze through this so I can finally see the ending I’ve been missing all these years.

    • Kamakuma

Same thing happened with me actually I was like in the half way mark. Was OP with all my weapon mystery high enough. Also had everyone with their unique weapons and such than corrupted data. I gave up… t.t (but I never found it particularly hard.)

      • Brimfyre

Yeah I didn’t mean to imply it was hard, I just want to play it a breeze through it without thinking about it. lol

        • Kamakuma

Ah, sorry for misunderstanding. XD But that would be awesome then. :3

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    ………………………..I’m done * uses zoom*

  • CirnoLakes

Don’t tell me they don’t have it programmed for landscape mode, too?

    • NickyArmstrong

I’d make note of the use of the word ‘mode’.

  • $36487238

Hmmm… interesting. I’ll give this is a shot if it’s gets localized.
I was about to recruit the guy in red but I don’t know why I didn’t continue on with DQ8 on PS2. Oh well… This looks good.

  • Steve Raineault

They whored Final Fantasy and KH for all they’re worth in the west while treating DQ like shit. Sad considering neither FF nor KH are worthy of tying the shoe of the DQ series.

  • SetzerGabbiani

    -____- …….

  • Shuga Suenaga

why dont they put this on the 3DS?
i mean come on, all DQ games are already on DS and 3DS r,r

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

DQ8 was easily my favorite in the series. I must’ve spent 150+ hours on it back in the day.

Although I would have preferred a release on PSN or an HD remake, I suppose this will have to do. I am a little skeptical though about re-living such a huge game on my small phone screen, it may not have the same impact.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

No landscape orientation? Are they dumb?

  • Fox

You’ve got to be kidding me. DQ8 already supports widescreen displays! Christ, Square-Enix really does manage to ALWAYS manage to fuck things up, don’t they?
