It Is The Age Of Mustache, Proclaims Japan In Super Smash Bros. Poll

By Eugene . October 17, 2013 . 1:34pm

GameKun, part of the Japan Game Users Association, recently conducted a survey on which characters are most popular from the Super Smash Bros series and the results show the kind of hive-mind think that only a mustache following could muster. GameKun polled both men and woman and broke down the results for most popular as follows:

All:

1) Mario 26%

2) Kirby 15.7%

3) Link 8.7%

4) Pikachu 7.1%

5) Captain Falcon 5.5%

Male:

1) Mario 28.9%

2) Kirby 13.4%

3) Link 9.3%

4) Captain Falcon 7.2%

5) Samus 6.2%

Female:

1) Kirby 23.3%

2) Mario 16.7%

3) Pikachu and Koopa  tied for 13.3%

5) Link and Ike tied for 6.7%

Some of the comments on choices were pretty insightful. Take this 40-year-old guy’s thoughts on Mario: “It’s like I’m still allowed to have this private place where I can be a kid (with Mario) and just have fun.”

Kirby came in strong in second place, thanks to his cute and cuddly nature, with women. A 20-year-old lady opined: “Kirby is so cute! And his attacks just blow away foes.” Amusingly, that’s something GameKun was quick to cheekily note was a pretty cheap way to play in the game.

It’s actually more hilarious to read GameKun’s replies to the comments from pollsters. One man said he picked Captain Falcon because Falcon was “hot”. GameKun’s reply? “What the hell is up with these young people and one-word answers?!?!”

Another said Mario was a “National character”, to which GameKun responded with, “Yeah, more than Doraemon, Detective Conan and others, Mario is the country’s national character. After all, it’s the Age of Mustache!”

Detective Conan is still alive, right?

    • GH56734

Yup. The anime hit the 700 episode cap recently.
If you were following it for the organization plot, it still retains the same status quo, with the occasional BO episode every year or so. The one for this year shakes things up a bit, but not enough to make one watch it back.
It seems popular with little kids, and younger women who are reportedly attracted to the cuteness of the main protagonist.

      • riceisnice

Who can blame them? Conan’s adorable!

Yep! The Show still continues on stronger with age!

What tragic news to come upon in the Year of Luigi…

    • Solomon_Kano

      Heh. Stachewicz.

    • Chaos_Knight

At least Luigi has a mustache.

  • Lord Búho

So kirby is male? I always saw him as an asexual being…

    • Bob

      It’s on both sides.

    • http://twitter.com/AuroraXIII AuroraXIII

It doesn’t say anything about his gender.

      • doubleO7

The comment from the 20-year-old lady referred to Kirby as a he.

    • doubleO7

Yes, officially Kirby is male. He’s typically portayed (especially in the TV show) as a baby or child of… whatever species he is.

    • Djip Minderman

They meant female voters, not female characters. Look, Samus is there in the male colomn too.

  • Guest

    Male:

    5) Samus 6.2%

    ????

    • doubleO7

Read the article more carefully. Samus was #5 among male voters.

    • http://twitter.com/AuroraXIII AuroraXIII

I like how you didn’t question Link’s gender in the female list.

    • J_Joestar

      not enough Zero Suit.

  • ronin4life

I would say Mario is more of a national character, as few people know who Conan or Doraemon are outside of Japan.

Inside of Japan, surely these 3 are outshined by others themselves, right?
    ? _.

    • WyattEpp

Worldwide, Captain Tsubasa might be better known than any of them. Well, maybe not so much these days… :/

      • yomachaser

Not even making a joke? Who is Tsubasa?

    • GH56734

Detective Conan and Captain Tsubasa are huge worldwide outside the US.

  • Jordan Ortiz

So Link, Ike, and Samus are Gender bending?

    • doubleO7

No, you didn’t read close enough. They’re listed by male and female voters, not characters.

  • Crevox

    kirby wins all polls

  • AuraGuyChris

Did he even notice there are males and females in the wrong polls, or is this Siliconera glitching?

    • fairysun

It’s male voters and female voters.
Not male characters and female characters.

  • IxisNaugus

Koopa is tied with Pikachu in the female list? Women like playing as Koopa? Hell, people in general like playing as Koopa!? I am genuinely shocked that Koopa made the female only list, or any list, for that matter! I guess stomping around as Bowser is more appealing to players than I thought. Perhaps I should’ve suspected something after the amazing sales numbers pulled in by Bowser’s Inside Story. Especially in Japan. Still a surprise, though.

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

It surprised me too at first, but then I remembered how popular Mario Kart is.

    • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I was thinking the same. My hubby is about the only person I know that enjoys playing Bowser.

      • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

Wait wait.. I didn’t realize you guys were reading “Koopa” as the Japanese name for Bowser. In that case I would be way more surprised, although I would think that if it really was Bowser being referred to here then they’d have specifically written “King Koopa”…

But I looked it up and I guess it really does mean Bowser. The little Koopa I’m thinking of is called “nokonoko” in Japan? :O (learning is fun)

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I paused and considered it for a moment too, but I quickly recalled that he is just referred to as Koopa often.

And yeah, haha; The More You Know, right~? x’D

    • Minos

      Kidnap fantasy I suppose.

  • xAtKx

We really need more Kirby games.

    • Steven Hunt

I can’t upvote this more than once :(

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

We’re getting more Kirby games, thankfully (especially considering that’s not the case with F-zero, Star Fox, Mother, etc… ;_;) I want to specifically ask for more Kirby’s Canvas Curse…

  • Edzo04

why did they make toon link look so strange in this game. he should be called toy link or plastic link or something. not even close to the cartoon art style of wind waker or the hd version

  • Shady Shariest

    Age of the mustache?
O-boi, time to get my Hercule Poirot books and Mario games ready :3

    • PreyMantis

Now, it makes sense why Peach gets kidnap all the time.

      • yomachaser

Or maybe that is her husband and some plumber high on schrooms keeps thinking he must “rescue” her.

Bowser Jr. has called her mama in every game he’s in AFAIK.

    • hazelnut1112

There are certain things that would surprise you about Bowser.

  • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

Kirby is the ultimate anomaly… he’s equally badass as he is cute. An all ’round, universally lovable powerhouse. Makes for a great plush toy for a child and at the same time is capable of crazier sword techniques than Link and fighting moves that’d give any Street Fighter a good challenge. If a mustache is what would put him at #1 then… http://lolbot.net/pix/992.jpg

Surprised to see Captain Falcon and Samus make any of the lists at all, though. And I’m surprised Pikachu wasn’t first for female voters and that he didn’t even make the male list at all. Many surprises here, but for me at least they’re all pleasant ones, lol. I’m sad that more female gamers don’t know and appreciate Samus, though… >_<

    • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Agreed 1000%~. I was especially disappointed that Samus wasn’t on the female list, but I figure there’s a logical reason (maybe she barely didn’t make it, or Zero Suit is off-putting).

      • 하세요

My assumption is males are more drawn to badassness and lasers while girls enjoy cuteness or manliness (like hunks, but I can’t explain Bowser at all), so girls never give Metroid a chance as it involves gross-looking aliens and whatnot.

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Lol, well that still wouldn’t cover why she isn’t higher in Smash. Point of contention though, Metroids are pretty adorable~.

      • hickorypan

My girlfriend loves Bowser because she sees tough “earthy” creatures as both cute and cool, like Rhydon or Nidoking in Pokémon. She likes Samus in her armour too and enjoys the games very much, but not in the Zero Suit because she says she looks typically anime-ish, uninspired and basically just has 4 prominent round balls for her anatomy (breasts and butt). She also loathes Other M with a furious passion, as do I, so she wouldn’t have voted for Samus in this poll either.

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I really want to meet your girlfriend~. >u<

I can somewhat echo the sentiment on the earthy creatures, and she has a point with Zero Suit. The sexiness of it bothers me a bit, but it's definitely how uninspired she looks that bothers me the most.

      • yomachaser

Metroid isn’t popular in Japan, it’s much more a western success.

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I assumed this applied to the character being used in Smash? But that also contradicts with Samus making one of those lists.

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

that is exactly why i pick captain falcon… “YES!”

  • kylehyde
    • Göran Isacson

I want someone to make a movie out of Smash Bros or garrys mod where they recreate this, but with Smash Bros characters. I want it mightily.

  • Saint_Stahn

I like both Mario and Luigi equally, they were my best friends growing up. But… Mario is in Super Mario RPG… I… I… gotta give him edge… So… sorry Weege fans.. Mario is no.1 for me and Nippon apparently.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    no love for peach?

  • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Yay Kirby! I’m actually curious about how much their respective series/games play a role too (similar to how 2D Mario is more popular in Japan, is Kirby popular only because of his design and moves, or also because his titles better match what those people enjoy playing).

Interesting how popular Koopa is with the gals too.

  • Göran Isacson

Aww, that fourty-year old mans reply makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Also kinda funny that an Italian is a Japanese national character ;)

Also, Bowser being popular may not be TOO out of the ordinary. Maybe it’s because he’s considered too cuddly to be a real antagonist, unlike say, Ganondorf?

  • ResidentMetroid

    Samus? Male? …lol.

    • 하세요

Male poll, not male characters voted for.

  • wahyudil

my list is Snake, Pikachu, Mario, and Ice Climber … yes Mario is the best fighter overall … not too fast, not too slow, not too strong, no too weak …

  • David García Abril

I didn’t know that Ike was such a hit with the ladies! lol

  • fan615boy
