“Top Secret” Pokémon Game Revealed As A Detective Game Featuring Pikachu

By Sato . October 28, 2013 . 11:00am

This morning, Japanese TV network NHK aired an episode of “Professional—Style of Work,” which gave us an inside look at the development of a new Pokémon title featuring Pikachu. This time, Pikachu won’t be starring as a cute pet or your typical Pokémon, but as a senior detective partner!

During the program, producer and Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara revealed that the game is a huge project that The Pokémon Company aim to complete in two years. The game will be a detective game, where you’ll be solving mysteries and using deductive reasoning while paired up with your senior detective Pikachu.

While there are already plenty of games that involve detectives and mystery solving, the Pokémon developers are currently working on new ideas to make it different than the others. While they’ll be making it easy enough for a younger audience to enjoy, they’ll be making a change they’ve yet to have tried—make Pikachu talk.

Ishihara had previously mentioned the possibility of this project adversely affecting Pikachu’s popularity, which is why it’s quite the big deal. The reason for this is because for the first time in 17 years, Pikachu will be speaking.

Not only will he simply be speaking, but Pikachu, who has been considered the cute and innocent Pokémon, will also have lines that are more suited for an adult, which makes sense considering he’ll be your senior detective partner.

For example, the above image depicts one of his lines that reads, “…Oh, they’re just beauties [girls]”. He’ll also have other hard-boiled lines to fit a detective persona. “If this keeps up, we’ll have a bag made from Pikachu…” is another one of his lines.

The decision to have a talking Pikachu was one that Ishihara and the other staff members spent a long time in deciding, as they felt that it would be impossible at first, and also a risky proposal. However, after telling them “let’s make this happen,” Ishihara and the others decided to go with it.

Some of you may remember the motion-capture image of Pikachu’s facial expression in the earlier post, which the staff members shared a good laugh showing during the TV program, as they expressed their surprise in the possibilities of all the different facial expressions.

The reason for this is to have Pikachu show more personality, as he won’t be the same Pikachu who is usually seen as the always-happy character in the anime.

    still freaking creepy

  • Arcana Wiz

WTF did i just read!? Gamefreak will implement more mature themes….using pikachu????? *minblown*

    • It’s not necessarily being developed at Game Freak.

      • Arcana Wiz

well if it’s pikachu they have to have gamefreak permission, what amazes me is cause GF is so kid friendly and now they are letting pikachu, their series mascot, star a game with these lines. o.O

        • They don’t need anyone’s permission but Ishihara’s. He’s the president of the Pokémon Company. :)

          • Dsvkb

There’s no way Game Freak doesn’t have a huge hand, if not develops the whole thing. Like they said, this is risky. It makes about as much sense as Nintendo offering Mario and Zelda to the CD-i back in the day.

          • GH56734

You do remember those Tingle games for the DS?
The first one has transvestites, alcohol, and implied sex, aside from a morally bankrupt Hyrule (everyone asks for money! It’s hilarious btw). The second one has dating sim elements and is supposedly even crazier.
And Captain Rainbow has Birdo, with a d**do! And not only that. The Japanese reviewers complained about the abundant obscene jokes

Those are two potential risks Nintendo took with their bands for two of their major series, Mario and Zelda.
Why not this, while they’re at it :D

          • British_Otaku

I haven’t finished the first Tingle game or the two DS Zelda games, but the first Tingle game is so far my favourite DS “Zelda” by a landslide. If experiments lead to projects like that, I want more.

  • Jesse

I hope they do some more work on that Pikachu motion capture to make it less creepy. o.o

  • This is… crazy. I love it.

    • EX+

This is essentially Pikachu LA Noire.

  • JustThisOne

A hardboiled detective pokemon game complete with one-liners?!

Was this game made just for me? :’>

Um… I have nothing to say Pokemon Company nothing at all

“The reason for this is because for the first time in 17 years, Pikachu will be speaking.”

Wow wow wow, so you mean this

    creepy monster will talk?

  • Guest
    • Arcana Wiz

      this will become a meme…..

  • I literally did not know that I needed this until now.

    It doesn’t help that I kinda hope it’s something that I can’t mention since it’s XY post-game spoilers…

  • someelfgirl

Didn’t pikachu talk in the mystery dungeon anime?
    Kugimiya, specifically…

    • British_Otaku

I actually remembered that, but just assumed they were going to ignore anime adaptations, spinoff games (Mystery Dungeon has a Pikachu talk as well without voice work) and manga adaptations (there are like a billion of them, chances are every breed has spoken in one) when it’s convenient…

Then again, Mystery Dungeon has them speaking “Pokemonese” to other Pokemon, rather than to other humans right? And the anime/manga adaptations while official are rarely recognised by the source material from Nintendo/Game Freak, especially for Pokemon aside from Jigglypuff and Pikachu getting the same voice as the anime and spotlight for so long.

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s the female pikachu, anw.. we can see the difference from its tail

this mascot pikachu means the male pikachu, satoshi’s pikachu.. maybe

  • Sentsuizan_93

Does this look like the face of mercy?

    • Nice Boat Quatro

It’s the second coming of the Villager.

    • He’s way more horrifying than the Villager. I commend them for going the extra tech mile and using mo cap, but why on someone like Pikachu?

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Alright! Now Pikachu can help me fend off demon pokemon from the Dark Realm!

  • subsamuel01

I’ll wait till I see more to judge.

  • Ran-san

Even my detective skills didn’t see that coming.
Very interesting concept they got going on.

Though them saying more “Personality” makes me imagine all the ways Pikachu will be showing his facial expressions O_o

  • J_Joestar

Only kind of detective i could picture Pikachu as would be as a Gumshoe-type, as is this guy

  • Sounds interesting. I wonder who pikachu’s English VA is going to be.

  • Exkaiser

Of all the pokemon to have as a senior detective partner… Pikachu? Huh.

  • Spirit Macardi

    CSI: Kanto

    • Law Enforcement in the Pokemon world should’ve been much more effective. Then again, kids do all the heroic work from saving a Region and to an extent, the world from villain groups.

  • RazeXI

You know based on what i read I really hope they give pikachu a duster and a five-o-clock shadow while they’re at it. The possibilities are just endless

  • DemonShadowX

Detective: Looks like the perp left quite a mess.
    Pikachu: Pika….
Detective: Body appears to have been beaten with a leek.
    Pikachu: Pi Pika Pi.
    Detective: How….. Farfetch’d…
    Pikachu: Pika…. *removes sunglasses* Chu…..

  • benhofb

They need to give Pikachu a dark and husky man voice. Then and only then will he be my detective partner…

  • $61526767

Those faces.. I’m really am looking forward to playing this game. (seriously)

  • artemisthemp

    Blue Picachu FTW

  • Zero-Crescent

  • Byas

I wonder what kind of cases Pikachu will be solving, I still can’t imagine that cute little guy investigating a murder or kidnapping scene.

    • Zeik56

He mentions Pikachu handbags. So obviously someone is murdering Pikachu’s and using their skins to create fashion accessories.

  • $1392518

Hopefully it wont have a big image and vocal dissonance like Drippy from Ni No Kuni

    • British_Otaku

      That was Level 5 right?
They did it again with Youkai Watch with Wispa (or whatever the official romanisation is), but I think it grew on me really quickly and distinguished him from the rank and file.

  • Punny Fuzz

Can I team up with a more practical partner instead?

    Maybe something like:

    -“Criminal tried to escape”
-“Dugtrio’s Area Trap Prevented the opposing Criminal from fleeing”
-Jynx’s Forewarn reveals the Criminal’s “Gun”

or think about how useful Future Sight could be

I mean, Pikachu doesn’t even have Odor Sleuth.

    • But who else is better suited for the shocking revelations at the end of a mystery?

  • konsama

    Pikachu Noir

    Detective: Pika Pika Pi
    Lorraine: Sni Snivy Sni Snii
    Detective: Pika…Pikachu Pi PIka
    Lorraine Sni-Snivy Sni Sniy Snivyy

    Best detective plot ever.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      “god theses fucking lips”

  • GH56734

Reminds me of the comic run by the Nintendo Power German magazine, about detective Kirby, with murder cases of course!

  • Locklear93

I’ll totally buy this if I get a hungover, hardboiled detective Pikachu, beating confessions out of suspects and flipping tables.

    • JustThisOne

Too many potions last night. He was in no mood for Honchrow’s Nasty Plots.

      • Locklear93

Or they could go the film noir route–as Gardevoir enters his office, “I knew the dame was trouble the minute she stepped through the door…”

        • J_Joestar

and it turns out she’s a dude.

          • Locklear93

The Maltese Falcon meets The Crying Game, huh? Could work. <_<

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Emma better be in this

      • Wait, that depends. Which Emma? The Bail Bondsperson?

  • Cazar

    Looker, the game?

  • DesmaX

    Oh boy, this is genius.
    I love it

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Hey U pikachu: Looker Quest A back story to this past

  • Dave_O_Segundo

And pikachu’s seiyuu will be… Norio Wakamoto; that’s right dracula himself will give the proper intonation that a hard boiled pikachu needs. jk

    • BURUAAA.

    • It’s funny, because before Norio Wakamoto was a Seiyuu, he was a Law Enforcer himself. In fact, his commanding voice WAS what made him get his seiyuu job!

  • Detective Pikachu, eh?

    Who murdered Professor Oak?

    Who did it?

Is it a boy? Or is it a girl?

    • AuraGuyChris

      It was the grandson.

    • s07195

Your client’s wallet was stolen by a thief who bumped into him. But what was him name again? Was it ‘???’ ?

  • British_Otaku

    Meitantei Pikachu?

It may be the first time I really appreciate Pikachu taking the spotlight in something, especially if they nail the lines for Pikachu with a great voice actor.

    • JohnThackr

The only seiyuu Pikachu has ever had also has a long standing role in Meitanei Conan, as a matter of fact. Ikue Ohtani plays Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, one of the Detective Boys. I wonder if she’ll still get the role.

      • British_Otaku

Yep, Mitsuhiko is one of my favourites out of the Detective Boys, but I guess there isn’t that much competition hence I referenced that instead of something else.

I don’t think that Ohtani will get the role here, even if she is more or less Pikachu between the anime, Pokemon games (as of X and Y) and Smash Bros in all regions. They seem open to expanding Pikachu’s horizons, in the anime there were other Pikachus which had a different voice like you would expect humans too and in the Mystery Dungeon anime they had Rie Kugimiya (http://www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk/news/2012-11-02/rie-kugimiya-voices-pikachu-in-pokemon-mystery-dungeon-anime-short ) and Tomoe Hanba (a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon special) voice the primary Pikachu before.

  • fireemblembeast

For veteran Pokemon fans? Haha, count me in! I’m looking forward to seeing the end result.

  • It has to be better than Hey you! Pikachu so I will welcome it.

  • Strain42

Really? A detective game where a freakin’ Pikachu is your senior? Jeez, that’s only worth EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING I’VE GOT!!! -dumps wallet into envelope and mails it to developers- JUST TAKE IT!!!

  • James Enk

if they the overall feeling of the game is like a noir pokemon story then i am interested to see more but if its something like “someone stole a magicarp go find the culprit ” then it’s not my thing

    • Zeik56

“What started as a simple case of a stolen Magicarp soon turned into a serial murder case. Only the hardboiled detective Pikachu can crack this case. He’s a loose cannon that doesn’t follow the rules but gets results.”

  • Hinataharem

Are we gonna have to get him coffee

  • DS23

    All of my WTFs

  • Ken C Cruz

    I hope pikachu use
    Thunderbolt to capture culprit.

  • Vulpis

Sad thing is, they have another established character that actually would fit this persona much better (and already talks)…except for the little problem that he’s teamed with Team Rocket. (That’s right!)

…though I kinda agree with a comment a friend of mine made on looking at the facial capture pics–Pikachu is apparently being played by Him from PPG.

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha I do admit, a detective game where Meowth has left the life of crime behind him to solve crimes (while in a trench coat because of course) would be the most fantastic thing.

  • JohnThackr

Hmm, will it be Ikue Ohtani, or someone else playing Pikachu? She’s always done Pikachu before. She’s always been one of my favorite seiyuu (and she’s got some nice high rated shows, like Tony Tony Chopper on One Piece, Konohamaru on Naruto, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, but I’ll always remember her as the title role in Hime-chan no Ribon, as Sora in Ah My Goddess!, and Yukina in Nadesico), so I’m sure she could do a great job.

  • I can just imagine the kind of cases we’ll be dealing with. Ace Attorney style stuff, where there’s been a robbery, and the accused is a Ditto, with his ability to take on the shape of anyone. And you have to clear his name.

    • Ethan_Twain

The prosecution holds that since there is only one Mincinno in the household and the security camera footage clearly shows a Mincinno to be the perpetrator, Dusty is clearly the guilty party!

Objection! Please look at the security footage again… there! Pause right there! Do you see that glint? That bit of reflection out of the rock garden?

Er, yes? You’d better be going somewhere with this, Mr. Oak.

Of course I am! What do you call something that reflects in the sun? Shiny! And what do you call the things that fill a rock garden? A STONE! There was a shiny stone at the scene of the crime! Since my partner accidentally shorted out the security camera circuit just after the crime… we cannot be sure that the Mincinno that did this dastardly deed is still a Mincinno! THE CULPRIT COULD BE A CINCINNO NOW!

  • s07195

    …Why? Why Pikachu?

EDIT: Suddenly imagined Pikachu interrogating Jack Bauer style… XD

  • AnimusVox

Look, I know Halloween is right around the corner but posting this is just wrong.

  • A Pokémon detective game? …really? -_-

  • 3PointDecoupage

Pikachu’s voice needs to be a 60 year old Scottish chain smoker.

  • leingod

I usually like Pokemon games, but this… this is crap :P

    • School Idol Addict

Well it do look like crap, but without seeing at least a little bit of gameplay, i think it’s too soon to judge.

      • leingod

You’re probably right about the pre-judging part, but I couldn’t help it. The basic premise is pretty lame. Hope they shut my mouth, though.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      but this is weird-but-unique one

  • Mario is Missing REALNESS!!!!!

  • Göran Isacson

    Or wait!
    “We’ll always have Kalos”.
Man Humphrey Bogachu is the gift that just keeps on giving… and that’s about all I’ve got right now. I am too weirded out to say anything else.

    • Ethan_Twain

Well, and “Pikachu, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” is just too too easy. Should have been back in the anime episode 1 tbh. Missed opportunity.

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha yes, I was thinking of that one but decided that fruit just hung TOO low.

  • Renaldi Saputra

  • Ethan_Twain

What a STRANGE project to get green lit. However, I’m delighted to see Nintendo doing different things with their IP. Pokemon/Hardboiled Detective isn’t a direction I would have forseen or recommended… but change is good! If only for the sake of getting some crazy original content, I’m kinda anticipating this.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

How can Pikachu be a detective if he and Ash always get fooled every time Team Rocket puts on a disguise? They’re idiots!

    • Jettythesunfish

      This is a smarter Pikachu.

      • also mebbe it ain’t Ash’s Pikachu. Ash’s is like SSS_nyo said, quite dumb like he is XD

        • sakusakusakura_nyo

          Oh, that could work then!

  • DyLaN

    *Looks at the pikachu face*

But yeah, what are them smoking to came out with this? XD

  • XiaomuArisu

    “A dead Charizard and a missing culprit….”

    ???: ….
Gumshoe: How about you just confess to stealing one of the starters? You know we have incriminating evidence.
    ???: …
Gumshoe: A starting trainer says he bumped into you. We even have a witness. Let’s just make this easier on the both of us.

They can make the game, I’d just hope to never see more of those creepy screenshots. ;_; Can’t unsee that in Pikachu now.
