Play Chocobo World On Vita, PocketStation Is A Downloadable App In Japan

Sony made a humorous video teasing a possible return of the PocketStation, the Japan-only PsOne memory card peripheral with a LCD screen. As it turns out, PocketStation will return as a  downloadable PlayStation Vita downloadable app and users can play many of the games that were available for it.

The PocketStation was sold in Japan from 1999 to 2002, during the height of the PsOne era, where it featured many mini-games based on several popular titles, such as the Chocobo World mini-RPG from Final Fantasy VIII.

Starting today, Japanese PlayStation Plus members will be able to download the PocketStation app, free of charge, which will also feature mini-games from Crash Bandicoot 3, Mega Man, Ape Escape, and many other PsOne classics.

Dokodemo Issho, the PS1 game which featured Toro, the Sony cat, will also be available to download for PocketStation on PlayStation Vita starting December 3, the same date the app will also become available for non-PlayStation Plus members.

Sony has yet to announce PocketStation for PlayStation Vita outside of Japan, but if they do, it looks like we may finally get to see what the big deal was about those mini-games back in the day.

          • safeto20scroll

Last time I tried putting something on my vita via ps3 thats from a different region PSN my vita says no, that does not belong to ur account. U cant use it.

          • Setsu Oh

oooooooooh i see. i didnt knw that. u have to buy a new card then

Interesting choice of aesthetics. Using the pocketstation as a boarder is novel, but I hope there is a way to view the screen without it.

    • Brandonmkii

The gallery page on a 4gamer article showed it without the pocketstation border, iirc

I still couldn’t comprehend why these trinket portables like the Dreamcast’s VMU were energy drainers. I swear they sucked the energy out of batteries in a matter of minutes. I just gave up on them because of that.

    • Namuro

It also suck our time and our souls… I spent way too much time on the VMU with mini games like Chao Adventure, Power Stone, etc. I was practically its slave…

The real treat would be the actual compatibility between the PS1 classics and this app. I played through FFVIII on my PSP a couple of years ago and I missed the Chocobo World I had on PC.

    • Yeah this isn’t all that neat without being able to play them with the games. :(

    • Ric Vazquez

Same here dude, would love to have this so I can play it with FFVIII

  • TheExile285

Ah, its just an app. Good.

  • Aristides

I hope this comes to the west =D

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Ohhh. This is probably one of the best resurrection i have ever seen here.^_^

Not only this apps bring nostalgia, it actually appeals to a very huge market who loves this thing.^_^

Now, if only Sega would release their VMU apps.T_T

  • Learii

    I want that app

  • artemisthemp

What is a pocketstation? is it like those tamagochi?

    • Setsu Oh

close, inspired from but much more and more disappointing.
