Attack on Titan Is Like A Hyperspeed Hunting Game

By Spencer . November 20, 2013 . 10:31pm

Spike Chunsoft’s Attack on Titan game gives Eren and other characters Maneuver Gears. These devices allow humans like the character you control to move quickly by firing grappling hooks and propelling forward. Attack on Titan for Nintendo 3DS is a 3D hunting game and just like the anime you can fly towards Titans.

Attack on Titan has different story modes for Eren, Mikasa and Ariman. Levi’s chapter will be available at launch as a bonus for early buyers. Attack on Titan comes out on December 5.

Not trying to start a fanboy war or anything since I own both platforms but Freedom wars for the vita looks a whole lot better and will probably play better. I’ll get both anyway, but that new trailer didn’t impress me.

    • Slayven19

Not like I’ll ever be able to play it anyway so its no concern to me sadly.

    • tubers

As someone who’s anticipated months for a gameplay reveal, this is a bit disappointing.

The animations look pretty janky and even worse than God Eater.

The Rose Thorn navigation seems pretty bland.

At least the lighting and sound effect quality seem good but I expected more from SCEJ, Dips and Shift.

Here’s to hoping that several months will polish Freedomwars.

As for AoT, at least the gameplay look better than I expected w/ the horrid looking shots released pre-gameplay footage.

      • Ferrick

i’m pretty sure that this is just a development video, meaning that it’s not the final product

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Seriously I have to ask wtf is up with people and these bots of theirs?

Dr Eggman needs to go to the hospital

          • Ferrick

i seriously have no clue, seems like whoever wrote the script for disliker bot updated again

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, it seems we are not really allowed to say no to Sony’s product i guess?T_T

    • Go2hell66

blegh those jump animations are too stiff

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Turns out the other way if you watch this trailer first then watch freedom wars.

The people run VERY slow in freedom wars. Looks boring as hell.

      And needs better music.

    • XypherCode

That’s normal considering the power of the 3DS. But of course you’ll just have to take it as it is – a 3DS game. Visuals are already a given and even the gameplay if you consider how the hardware runs the actual game. Freedom Wars isn’t really the best game to compare it with even if they do have similar mechanics, but I can still see your point.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        Cough IronFall Cough
But yes Im sure he’s concerned more with the graphics rather than the audio and the actual gameplay.

The combo’s look okay I guess, just really looks like it lacks depth. But reveal trailers you know.

        • evilkaz

Nice graphics and environments are always nice man. But comparing it strictly from gameplay SnK needs to show me more because right now it looked rather terrible to me (and there better not be cloud hopping). I wont say Freedom wars looked perfect but it at least showed off more and actually impressed me since both games deal in large scale battles.
Iron fall is unrelated since it isn’t the type of game SnK and FW are trying to be.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Im talking about graphics on the handheld. Which tend not to be pushed.

I am far more concerned about the Framerate either way.

Anyway. yes SNK needs to show more. But people like that weird fangame so I guess they’ll like this

          • ishyg

That weird fangame is awesome. They should hire the guy who made that game.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I will said that game take more cue from Lost Planet series than AoT though.

  • JustThisOne

It looks like they’ve got the environments down. :3

  • Go2hell66

If they just rushed this game a little bit less it could have been so much better. graphics really need some work. still i’m pretty impressed how well it all came together as an action game

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      gameplay over graphics

This is Spike Chunsoft. Handheld Japanese Developers don’t want put graphics first.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Yeah I thought the game looked bad at first

I think they’re just penny pinching on budget when it comes to AOT.
Really not pushing the 3DS whatsoever.

  • Crevox

    So many haters…

Game looks okay/good, I can’t imagine the combat being too indepth with what they’ve shown, but it looks cool.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Haters where?

      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

AoT untiy fans i guess you can say most. Since they keep comparing them

        • GH56734

The fangame was brought to mainstream attention in Japan and actually predated the 3DS game (you can say it was because of that mediocre official browser FTP game that the fangame was even developed) so it’s fair to say Chunsoft noticed and took some cues from it.

I mean, there’s a noticeable difference between the sluggish gameplay of the first 3DS one trailer and this one now, which is fast, fluid and better looking overall. Guess that, even for an anime game, it would be a disgrace for Chunsoft if a fan-game surpassed their output.

Either way I’m happy if it’s mean a licensed + decent combo.

  • Strid

Love the manga, anime, and my 3DS, but this looks like a junk game.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i do feel that graphics is kinda lacking, the fact that there are World mode, makes my AoT fanboy sense go crazy lol.

Imagine our original character fighting together with Scout Legion?

I just hope this game had crazy difficulty mode where if you are caught once, you are dead. That will make this game crazily scary and tense to play.^_^

    • J_Joestar

Even a glancing blow from some of the medium sized Titans should be crippling.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Of course. Imagine that when we almost kill the Titan, another Titan near us accidentally hit us with its hand resulting our dead lol.

        That will crazily scary.T_T

  • AndyLC

    I see a lot of QTE’s.

So far, the fan-made Attack on Titan browser game is looking more sophisticated in gameplay depth, where attacking the titans is more about skill in maneuvering than timing QTE’s

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yeah, plus in the 3DS game you hook onto nothing. No way in hell is it going to capture the magic of this.

    • InfectedAI

Feng’s game is one of the best things I’ve ever played. The official game is mediocre by comparison. Hopefully they release an actual gameplay video that shows a full level and the control scheme.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        They both look terrible.

        Try playing them

        • InfectedAI

Feng’s looks nice. It has a style of its own which quickly grew on me. And I love the gameplay. This one doesn’t look too good ganeplay or graphics wise. Hopefully the gameplay makes up for the meh graphics, but I wouldn’t bet on it from how they’ve been handling it and what we’ve seen.

    • Christopher Nunes

I’ll admit the Fan-Game looks good with its gameplay and people have played it, but I do hate how people are bashing on the 3DS AoT game so much.

I will say that comparing the two I like the look of the 3DS AoT game over the Fan-Game AoT as the characters look and more fast in my opinion and I love the idea of a gauge to show how much gas you have left in your 3D Maneuver Gear before it runs out and you’re out of luck until you restock. The Fan-Game AoT seems to have a unlimited supply of gas so you can continue to move around continuous without worry. The 3DS AoT shows a higher risk of being killed by Titans if you’re 3DMG is empty unlike the Fan-Game.

However so far in the Fan-Game AoT I like that attack the eyes of the Titans will reduce them immobile for a brief moment so you can strike at their weak point, but I feel like they “regenerate” their eyes too quickly and return to normal. I’m not sure about the 3DS AoT, but I do hope they allow as attacking their feet to knock them over or eyes to blind them so we can strike them down with ease.

Also it seems to be the Fan-Game has an unusual length to the 3DMG with the cables (I’m not sure how far they can actual go) and you cover more ground in the Fan-Game than it does in the 3DS one, but the 3DS has you continue hook to the buildings to travel far like the anime has shown. I don’t see where the hooks connect to the “air” like some of the Spider-Man games do (SM2 the movie and Ulimate SM actual connected to the buildings) in the 3DS so I’m reverse my jugdement.

Where in the Fan-Game you need to position yourself to strike at the Titan’s weak spot the 3DS seems to have an automatic approach to it but with a QTE system to make sure you time the “kill” perfectly to finish off the Titan in one shot, where the Fan-Game seems at times takes multiple hits to kill them. While I understand they’re trying to match the anime and be “realistic” as if you don’t time the attack well you screw up and the Titan notices you to kill you. Though I will say I prefer the Fan-Game ‘s way of fighting Titans (not sure if Titans can grab you like in the 3DS where you can stall for time for your partner to show up to save you).

But considering the LACK of a second analog stick I guess they went this route to make it easier for you to position yourself to their weak point but it does take the challenge away it seems to me. I like have to try my best to attack the weak point (though I haven’t played the Fan-Game) with my skills to align myself correctly on my own but in the Fan-Game it seems I can swiftly kill Titans faster and easier this way which seems a little unnatural for the series, as they can barely kill one of them, while the 3DS shows it might take a little while longer to kill a Titan than the Fan-Game and more align to the manga and anime’s take on how long it takes them to kill them! You’re no Levi! XD

I haven’t seen a lot of the Fan-Game but the 3DS has a variety of missions like Horseback riding in the open fields which I don’t see in the Fan-Game (it might be there, I don’t know).

Graphics-wise the 3DS version, considering the hardware and how much data they put into the fields to be open world and realistic, is much more polished than the Fan-Game (for various reasons) and have more structural of the character models and more like the characters from the show and the Titans are more “variety” in their appearance and sizes. Though I will say the Fan-Game has done an amazing job on the character models, but they seem so childish in a way with their chibi look (which isn’t a bad thing), but the Titans seem to lack variety between each other and look the same with different hair color.

Though the Abnormal Titan in the Fan-Game was nice to see. However I don’t know if the Female Titan, Armored Titan, and Colossal Titan are in the Fan-Game where the 3DS AoT seems to cover up the most recent chapter in the manga in Japan.

I’m not sure if the Fan-Game AoT has a Story Mode or just killing Titans, while fun for a while, will lose some replay value if there’s not other things to do and I’m not sure if you can make your own character in the Fan-Game where the 3DS one does, but it does looks terrible to me as it seems to use existing character models and body parts as a Character Creation (while nice to “play” as Eren and his friends) so more defining options and settings to REALLY make the characters more original and their own, though it’s alright. Could’ve been better for a nice extra feature for an AoT game.

The 3DS AoT seems to have other missions not align to killing Titans, which is nice to see.

In my opinion both games have their strong and weak points and while the Fan-Game has more gameplay depth I think the 3DS is still a solid game of the AoT series in its own right. Should’ve it been on a console? I believe so to take full advantage of the hardware to really bring an AoT game to life (like how crazy Asura’s Wrath is, but without the QTE (which I still LOVE Asura’s Wrath regardless) and a lot more fluid and smooth gameplay and action). Is the Fan-Game AoT a better AoT game than the 3DS AoT? I believe so parts it does better than the 3DS one, but I also think the 3DS AoT does outshine a few things over the Fan-Game one.

In the end I think both versions of an AoT game is great and people should give the 3DS one a chance at least. I really hate the constant “hate” and “bashing” of the 3DS AoT where game companies are using their time to create an official AoT that’s portable and can be played anytime for the consumers and fans of the series. Have a little respect for them, they’re wasting blood (not really), sweat, and tears making this game in the short time they have (I’m not sure how many are working on it) when they can be doing something else and they providing players a means to play an AoT game on the go.

I might get downvoted for this, but I don’t care. I will speak my mind. It’s a good game and their first attempt at a AoT game and it’s on the 3DS (I think the Vita would’ve been a better choice for a portable game as it’s more powerful and has a second analog stick), so be a little courtesy please, mm’kay?

You don’t like it, you don’t like it. Just don’t say something along the side like “it’s a horrible” or “pathetic” and compare it to the Fan-Game. There’s more to video game making than you think.

PS: Man, did I go overboard. :P

      • J_Joestar

        that was long lol,
well some of the things you noted seem to appear in the trailer.
        -Slashing the eyes/attacking limbs.
while not done with the sword from what i can tell, the trailer does show use of a cannon to the face which showed a definite stun/immobilized reaction as the Titan covers it’s face in pain. Thrown explosives and landmine-like traps seem to be able to literally remove titan limbs as well.

        -Stalling to be rescued
It looks like “Move the Analog Stick” QTE may be involved with that to try and struggle when grabbed as the trailer shows that just before it also shows the Titan biting down and the screen goes red.

        • Christopher Nunes

          “-Slashing the eyes/attacking limbs.”
Well I was referring to the swords, but if the cannon can break off limbs than it stands to reason the sword can blind the Titans by swiping at the eyes.

“-Stalling to be rescuedIt looks like “Move the Analog Stick” QTE may be involved with that to try and struggle when grabbed as the trailer shows that just before it also shows the Titan biting down and the screen goes red.”

That’s what I was referring to as moving back and forth the analog stick stalls the amount of time the Titan will have to bite down on you to give your ally a chance to rescue you. I doubt you can break free on your own meaning teamwork is vital to surviving.

The Fan-Game AoT seems to have you noticeable killed rather easily if you crash into a Titan’s face, though the character do die when they get swatted at so it’s within the realm of possibility of how you die. The 3DS one at least gives you a second chance to save yourself from a horrible fate.

Either way both AoT games have it’s hard and easy moment.

  • ChiffonCake

Eh… that wasn’t as good as I’d expect, really. It doesn’t even look like the 3DMG uses actual physics for movement.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

Eren’s story = Training and training, lost in first battle. Fight in the rest of story as SPOILER without ever using 3D manouver gear rendering the main gameplay useless

Mikasa’s story = Killing titans mercilessly, but in the miidle of missions you will always get “Go save Eren” objective

Armin’s (lol Ariman) story = you can glide following your team, but you will never kill any titans since your job is arranging strategy with100% chance of success

Levi’s story = being a badass, but your comrade will always die

    • Kari

Correction:Levi’s story = being a badass, but your nakama will always die

      There you go

  • sd28

so people are using what looks low budget rushed cashin to continue there console wars crap huh

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

around 2:50… Colossal Titan is shrinking into normal building size

  • Finally, a trailer that shows footage. I’m still hoping this game comes here. It looks like a good distraction.

  • The Watcher

I wonder if titans will pop up in front you while grappling across the field and instakill you like in the anime.

  • fairysun

What is the best way to promote this game?

    Hint: With a song.

  • It seems that they have improved the graphics a little bit since the first trailer and the gameplay looks fun! Also the song in this video is soo catchy! Hope for a localization o/

  • J_Joestar

at 2:08, was that like an underwear/swimwear outfit or something?
Thrown explosives, Cannons, landmines/explosive traps, looks like it could be interesting if done right.

  • PERSONA 5!!!! (Umar)

Hmm, manga spoilers in this game? I see the armoured titan in the open field..

    • British_Otaku

That is the spoiler right there. If I wasn’t a manga reader I would assume the game is just letting us have missions which the source material will never explore (like letting the Titan that killed Eren’s mom get slayed a mission where you are still in training). >_>

Games are free to explore material which the anime or other adaptations haven’t covered and they always do. Chances are the ToraDora game covers and nods to novels and adaptations that the anime didn’t even give much of a look as well.

  • Ganali Castillo

I will save my comments for when i play the game.

  • Deidara19

Although, I will definitely get this game if it comes to the states (which I suspect since popularity), I feel as though there is so much potential lost making it on the 3DS. IMO this type of game is much better suited for consoles (hopefully PS4/XboxOne) fingers crossed. This game would literally be epic, just imagine like a final fantasy XIII or XV free roam with fluid fighting system using Maneuver gear!

  • PreyMantis

As much as I like the series, anime-based games never really come out good.

    • British_Otaku

Never? Astro Boy: Omega Factor, One Piece and most of the GBA Dragon Ball games were brilliant. >_> Licensed games are unlikely to be good as they are attached to most strict schedules and can depend on the license to sell without much work, they aren’t impossible to be good or even the definitive games of a platform like how Arkham Asylum/City are going to go down.

  • reylth

“different story modes for Eren, Mikasa and Ariman” who is Ariman? xDDD
it must be Armin not Ariman xDDD

  • AkiraScare

AOT is ye olde day and Freedom Wars in the future… either way bith have shown us how to take out giants… with grappling hooks and swinging around (^_^)

  • Dragard Kaos

I really hope this doesn’t turn out to be “Quick Time Events: The Game.” I’m worried about the camera. With just one analogue pad, it might be difficult to move the camera around at those speeds. Clawing isn’t as easy on the 3DS as it was on the PSP.

    • J_Joestar

I doubt it will need to claw for camera control,

At some points it looks like the camera can be locked on to centre around a titan or it may use some combination of L=Forward Camera + Touch screen controls.
Digital D-pad works wonders for Monster Hunter.
