Freedom Wars Has An Attack on Titan Vibe To It

By Spencer . November 21, 2013 . 12:38am

After seeing the trailer for Spike Chunsoft’s Attack on Titan game and this new video from Freedom Wars I have a feeling of déjà vu The way the characters use grappling hooks and fly towards enemies feels just like the Maneuver Gear.

God Eater developer Shift and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 developer Dimps are teaming up with Sony’s Japan Studio to create this hunting game for PlayStation Vita. I wonder what they could have done if they had the Attack on Titan license…

Freedom Wars is slated for release in 2014.

  • Ping92

a rescue mission and disarming enemies.

    niiiiiiiiiiice :)

  • AokiShizuku

So Abductors become much faster once the civilian is out. That’s a great way to create some intensity during battle. It looks great! I can’t wait till release. Hopefully I’ll be able to purchase it day one.

    • tubers

If you watch carefully, it’s kinda funny how team mates get knocked up in the air when the Abductor rages by losing his hostage.

  • Raze

    Still looks stiff…
But hey….It’s the first vid of the gameplay…

I hope they will improve it more…
Release a demo, look at the player impression and make the game better…Like Type-0 Phantoma and camera case….

    • Rokkun

      Yeah the animations look stiff…

    • tubers

Yes. I’m actually annoyed about the animation. I can’t believe it looks worse than God Eater.

It’s likely this has a long way to go tho.

I doubt Sony’s releasing this right after SS:D w/c is March in JPN.

Gun sound effects and lighting looks good.

      • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Disgusting animation really. To think this contains a part of Japan Studio’s DNA is shocking really – given how awesome some of their other games look.

        • tubers

          I agree.

The sprinting and running looks pretty awkward as if it’s meant to travel further but you actually move in short distances.

  • Protos_Heis

I think it needs a localization vibe too

    • Ric Vazquez

      Amen brother *high five*

    • artemisthemp

      I think you are right

    • Damarius Wingfield

You sir, have earned yourself a drink! *TOASTS*

  • Vernauth

that gameplay remind me of lost planet

    • tubers

LOL a bunch of people do with that floaty grappling.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Indeed. I feel the game is much closer to Lost Planet/Ex Troppers compared to AoT.

The slow movement, shooting while running and grappling all over the walls keep reminding me of Lost Planet.

      • MXC

        My thoughts exactly.

  • Arz

The gameplay really reminds me of Kingdom Hearts 3D. Anyone else feels the same?

Also, need to get dat soundtrack.

    • British_Otaku

I played a bit of Dream Drop Distance’s Demo and I suppose it seems similar in the sense there can be a lot of scaling and navigation on top of fighting. Does the game top that and have a grapple like mechanic as well?

I need to start playing KH…

      • Arz

well don’t think so. Maybe because of the attacks animations and the wall jumping.

  • Go2hell66

looks like a failed godeater spinoff to me

    • incpdo

it looks better than godeater so i doubt it is a ” failed spinoff”

  • tubers

If only Sony took that AoT license but at least we have more diversity with MP JARPGs.

Sound effects and bgm are good.

Lighting looks pretty insane for a handheld.
I can spot at least 7 characters on screen, looks fun (2:00 mark onwards).

    Sprinting animation kinda kills it.

  • SHSL Big Bro

I can definitely feel the AoT vibes. But gameplay seems a bit too stiff, as was previously said. Speed and mobility needs to be buffed at least 20%, nearing God Eater levels. Grappling hook seems nice but lacking the ability to shoot while sticking to a wall seems to make it less appealing. The great focus will be on pulling things from the Abductor, or pulling yourself towards it, AoT style.

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Holy – and I was so darn excited for this. Graphics absolutely bomb! Stiff and static character movements.

Let’s hope the story and party interaction are something to look forward as gameplay is clearly inferior to GE2.

The difference between the cinematic trailer… and this… is just too great.

    • Ferrick

is it me or do you always complain about graphics ?

edit: nevermind, you do indeed complain about graphics at most vita topics

      • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Well I don’t usually complain about graphics for the sake of complaining.

I mean Conception II has HORRIBLE dungeon crawling graphics but DCing isn’t the MAJOR part of that game – the dialogue parts are really well done graphically.

Same with Demon Gaze – 1st person DC graphics look pretty mediocre but the 2D drawings are done really really nicely.

We’re talking about a bloody 3rd person monster hunting type game – of COURSE its gotta be graphically good or at least as good as GE2. Hell you’ll be stuck MHing for the majority of the time on mediocre if not pathetic graphics and a stiff control system – it deserves every criticism.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

….Are you just sad because it doesnt beat Monster Hunter?

          • Bobby Jennings

            Damn, 239 dislikes….

        • Ferrick

no, i’m pretty sure that you complain about graphics even at games that are not even graphics oriented

          • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

aww, take it however u will then

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Go play Ryse.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Hmm………. while i do see some resemblance toward AoT series, i feel that this one is closer to Lost Planet grappling hook rather than AoT. Considering how AoT 3D manuver gear is so much agile and flexible, this one is more on pulling the player to enemies(Like Lost Planet.) or pulling the enemies down so they get stunned(Like Ex Troppers which is also spin off from Lost Planet series.)

Not to mention, the stiff movement, and quite monotone techniques, is also not really helping.T_T

Lets hope this game is still in early development here so that they can develop this game further. If not, this game is only going to be inferior version of God Eater.T_T

    • Kevin Lor

      ^^^Exactly my thoughts!

    • Bobby Jennings

I agree. It’s looking mighty stiff but at least it works so far. Looks nice and I can’t wait to see more.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lets see in the future then.^_^ If they can at least achieve movements like Ex Troppers, i would be more than happy.^_^

    • British_Otaku

You could also say it is similar to Luffy’s swinging and grabbing in Unlimited World RED or other One Piece games (One Piece on the GBA comes to mind) before Attack on Titan or Lost Planet.

All of that said, I don’t think Spencer thought that AOT was the first series to feature it, it was just a nod to having two articles on hunting games with similar mechanics.

The game does look a little rough now that I look at the trailer again, even though the aerial combat mechanics are dope.

  • $77496739

Good thing Attack on Titan didn’t invent grappling.

    • Chogokin

I agree, but posting a video from a 2013 game isn’t proving your point.

      • Juan Baker

How bout Lost Planet (2005), where the whole concept of the game was grappling not just all around the stages, but onto giant beasts.

  • AndyLC

I wonder if Lost Planet came out after AoT, if people would be saying its grappling hook monster slaying theme was an “Attack on TItan” vibe?

    • Ferrick

i’m pretty sure that someone somewhere would say spiderman no matter which came first

      • AndyLC

It’s Capcom, so they can always say “Bionic commando!”

        • Ferrick

you mean the “MY ARM IS MY DEAD WIFE!” ?

  • Virevolte

Well, it’s still a little soon to assume the quality of the title. There’s still time for them to improve the game.

  • Ferrick

i don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty sure that the video translates into
“freedom wars development play video” (courtesy of google translate, and several other less known translators that shall not be named)

meaning that this is most likely not the final product

    • TheExile285

I really don’t even know why I bothered reading comments in this article. Anyway, I’m hyped.

      • Ferrick

        lol you’re up early

        • TheExile285

          Not because I want to ;_;

          • Ferrick

lol, anyways, yeah i’m interested on how this will go too, but yeah

    • British_Otaku

I know games tend to improve with time and demos aren’t always fully representative, but when we have got a gameplay trailer (not a Unreal 3 demo like Mighty No 9’s footage made in a week before the Kickstarter ended) and not cinematics it is pretty safe to assume any changes unless the game is releasing a few years time will be minimal.

Feel free to correct me with an example of a game which notably changed in a short period of time.

      • tubers

If this thing has at least 6 months in dev hell then I think it’s reasonable to at least see some animation improvements even if subtle.

        • British_Otaku

Animation improvements are quite possible even in a short time frame, I just had an issue with Ferrick’s post seeming to brush away all of the possible issues just because the game isn’t due to release that soon.

      • Ferrick

well in my POV, i can’t really say that both of us are right or wrong, but i’m willing to gamble on the part that this game doesn’t have a set release date yet, meaning that they have decent amount of time to increase and balance out some parameters before the game’s released

        • British_Otaku

I responded like that because your post seemed dismissive of any weaknesses (since you weren’t specific) in the extended footage. It could definitely go either way with the game adjusting parameters as you say or additional mechanics and concepts for us to see which they are keeping under wraps.

I still assume that this type of sequence in the game will probably play out the same for the most part.

          • Ferrick

ah, my bad, i should’ve been more detailed on what i meant

but yes, the core mechanics will definitely be that way, but if they change the speed parameters for characters, that’ll make it all the better, though i do hope that they do it without disregarding balance, for this game is also a pvp game

          • British_Otaku

This is also a Player vs Player game? I’m not sure how it can work, but I welcome them to have a go.

I haven’t played much other hunting games, in fact I think every hunting game I’ve played was a demo on the 3DS or Unlimited Adventure on the Wii. >_> I’m not sure how it will work out, but I would like to have more great stuff to play next to the definitive Disgaea games, Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, indies and ports.

          • Ferrick

yep, according to an article, it will have a area conquer mode where you fight against 8 other prisoners to obtain the area

  • Kayseur

Since we don’t even an estimated date of release, they still have a lot of time to improve everything — especially the speed and animation. I’ll trust them and just wait until we get new footage late december at Jump Festa. I think a mid-2014 release would already give them plenty of time.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

Pacific Rim has giant appear from nowhere -> JUST LIKE SNK
Freedom Wars has grapping and swinging -> JUST LIKE SNK
Edward Elric losing arm and leg and also a shortie -> JUST LIKE SNK
Pokemon has a character named Petra -> JUST LIKE SNK

what’s next are the fanboys are going to says about SnK… Spiderman is similar to SnK? Sasuke’s Susanoo is like SnK? oh wait, they already are….

    • Ferrick

      power rangers ? XD

      • Rayhan PromisedGallery

there are already a joke about “Teen titans” though…
which is sadly isn’t popular because of spoiler

        • Ferrick

i know what you mean XD

    • Spider-Man

Spider-Man huh? I’ve heard people say that all the time, still irks me.

    • DyLaN

IMHO PR is more similar with MLA: TE/NGE than SnK/AoT. :V

    • RisukuAozora

What annoys me the most tho is that Attack on Titan is referred to SNK for short. There already is an SNK… the game company.

      • Rayhan PromisedGallery

Shingeki no Kyojin is the original name of the manga in japan… Attack on Titan is name for localization.

        • RisukuAozora

I knew that, but thanks for the info all the same. I just meant it gets confusing when I hear people mention SNK and I think they mean the company that makes King of Fighters, but nope Attack on Titan.

    • British_Otaku

It is a broad nod to something people are familiar with from the fanboy or writer in question, it doesn’t need to be taken so seriously even if that post was sorta funny.

The worst cases I know is when Bleach fans seemed to think that the term “Shinigami” belonged to them and Kubo or when some Naruto fans believe that the term “Susanoo” and such are exclusive in a similar way. This is just a writer making a comment that both have hunting and swinging at the forefront. and both had recent footage, not that it wouldn’t exist without AOT.

    • J_Joestar

Jesus died and returns as a savior -> Just like SNK! (although it was more like 3 chapters rather than 3 days.)

  • chibiwall

  • MisterHoot

Apart from the stifness of the run, I don’t see that much of a problem ?….Gameplay looks interesting. To me it’s more like a co op action game more than a hunting game tbh. The focus on rescuing rather than killing is what makes it for me.

Other than that, yeah speed could use a little boost but we see that the character has different speeds at different times so I’m not that worried

  • The Watcher

Lost Planet X Attack on Titan

  • Aristides

Love how the character models and enemies look. Environment could still use more detail but still the game looks great :P

  • fairysun

I call dibs. Next gen consoles will have many games about human fighting giant-size enemies.

  • I quite like what I see in this video…the character, environment and monster design looks great, but they really have to improve the animations and the speed of the game. I really hate games where your character seems made of rock, and they move ridiculously slow!

  • I don’t really see a problem with the gameplay. Especially since it’s still in development too. I will obtain freedom for my friends and I by killing everything in my way along with my awesome android =^_^=

  • Prinny Dood

It kind of reminds me of the gaint black heartless sora fights at the beginning of kingdom hearts

  • I need to play this before making any decisions but the movement is rather slow

  • WolfDuo

I thought S4Leauge before attack on tittan to be honest..

    • RichyGaming

I thought of God Eater, and then S4 League lol

  • neogeno

The speed makes sense to me. It seems to be for the same reason MH is slow. Strategy. The game wouldn’t be so exciting if you can dash away from an abductor at high speed. I imagine the levels are designed to make you plan your route of escape.

  • dahuuuundge

    I’m thinking Spiderman instead

  • Prinnydoom

This is looking really promising. Looks on par with soul sacrifice here’s hoping we over seas folks get noticed by japan senpai.

  • Anthony Birken

One of the games I’m psyched for! Really hope it gets translated!

  • Vash bane

all I needed to see was that you could sprint lol

I sense ALOT of ppl will be role playing this in multiplayer
