Persona 4: Dancing All Night Begins When Rise Starts Working As An Idol Again

By Spencer . December 2, 2013 . 10:41pm

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva developer Dingo is making a Persona rhythm game for PlayStation Vita. Persona 4: Dancing All Night picks up after the events in Persona 4. Rise Kujikawa leaves Inaba and goes back to becoming an idol. However, a rumor spreads to the big city that if you open a site exactly at midnight a strange video will play. Whoever views this video goes into the "other side."

Someone from Rise’s idol group, Kanamin Kitchen, goes missing. Rise contacts Yu Narukami (the protagonist in Persona 4) and reaches out to the Investigation Team to help rescue the missing idols.

And that’s why Yu is dancing with Izanagi.

Kanami Mashita is a junior idol who goes by the nickname Kanamin and her other group members have gone missing.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night will have songs from the game and anime series. "Pursuing My True Self," "Heaven," "Reach out to the Truth," "Time to Make History" from Persona 4: Golden, and "True Story" from Persona 4: The Animation are confirmed for the game. Japanese musicians including Tetsuya Komuro and Daisuke Asakura will make remixes for the game.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night is slated for release in fall 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

    • totoro

      What charm stat.

  • Chris Yuen

Hoping for unlockable Dojima and Adachi. I wonder if Naoto is going to be are they going to convince her to perform?

    • Quacker

Well she is a detective so there is a reason for her to turn up.

    • Asaoko

Adachi please. Definitely Adachi. The audience screamed louder when Adachi appeared for a split-second in that concert of theirs so. Adachi. Thanks. <3

  • Saeed Al-Thumali

guys what if they add the fox and he dances to “what does the fox say”

    • Byron Kerrison II

    • Xerain

I was secretly hoping for Koromaru-san and never considered this possibility….

  • TheExile285

Kanami is pretty cute. Not as cute as Chie or Rise but still cute~

I hope this game has this track:

    • awat

      chie isnt cute at all,

      • Landale

She is. She’s just not the cutest, but then it’s really hard to compete with Naoto there.

      • Shippoyasha

      • TheExile285

Well, everyone is entitled to their own trash opinion :P

      • Leon_Tekashi

        Chie is cute
        Rise is cute
        Naoto is cute
        Yukiko is just beautiful.

Of course these are my opinions. I want to see Yukiko dance! =)

        • Nexus

Right on! Even though it’s a given since Chie is a playable character, I still want a confirmation for Yukiko. Yukiko best girl <3

        • Demeanor

I’m a Rise fan myself, but after seeing P4G’s ending… I must say, “true” Naoto wipes the floor with everyone else XD

      • DeadLineDance

        Yes. Thank you.
I thought I should tell you that at least someone is on your side before the rabid Chie army charges in.
Actually, while we’re at it, Naoto’s not attractive either. RISE/YUKIKO FOREVERRRRR

        • Warren

YES! THANK YOU! I guess im not attracted to short haired girls so i don’t like them, but these “fans” act like i beat up someone and yell cause i won’t join their “congregation”.

    • JustThisOne

Kanami is making visors look cute. I am amazed.

    • Ramengeddon

      Rise/Naoto > meat

      • TheExile285

      • awat

        good one

    • Mirai

If I base the P4 girls popularity based on the amount of fanart.

Naoto would be considered the most popular.

      Then Chie.

      Followed by Yukiko

      With Rise in last place.

Suprising for me as the least feminine appearance wise are the most popular and personally the one I consider the most attractive Rise is at the bottom.

      • TheExile285

        For me its

        • Mirai

Switch Chie and Rise around and that would be my list.

      • James Reilly

In Japan Yukiko is the most popular while in the west Chie is.

      • DeadLineDance

        This confuses me too, man.
        This confuses me too.
I guess we just like girly girls…

    • awat

cmon guys, i just said shes not cute , shes all just about MEAT <

  • JustThisOne

W..Wait. So how does this exactly “help” anyone get out of the other side?

Maybe you can only escape if you get a perfect combo?

    • InfectedAI

Bring him over with the excuse that he’s a dance partner so he can help her with the paranormal stuff.

  • Jonathan Tse

when this game’s trailer was shown on the Niconico stream i was pretty steamed…. and then i realized because i have a Vita and am a Rise fan…… i’m pretty much gonna have to buy this.

  • icecoffemix

    This man knows what’s up.

They really make use his Anime persona well eh.

  • Byron Kerrison II

    All the females and Yosuke.
Then I honestly could care less who they decide to put in this.

    • Warren

      Not even Kanji? :(

  • LM009

omg they gotta localize this insta-buy haha

    • Rolling Guy

      What in the actual fu-

    • Steven Higgins

they will, rhythm games may not be huge here, but there are some American ones that do well like Just Dance. And Protect Diva F made it over here. Beside Persona 4 is a huge cash-cow for atlas.

  • Xerain

Junior Member? Would make more sense if she was a Rival.
I guess this isn’t so much a retcon as it goes to show her former manager was willing to say anything to get her to tearfully run back to them. (During Social Link)

    • Anoia

This is the girl that replaced Rise when she stopped being an idol, she was mentioned many times in her S.Link.

      • Xerain

Exactly my point. It was made pretty clear Rise would not be able to go back to her old manager. That’s why she decides to consider an alternate career as a Seiyuu.

  • I want to see Jiraiya also bust a move like Izanagi.

After all, Yosuke’s Persona is a Disco Ninja Frog.

  • Croix Zapp

Weird, wouldn’t have even imagined this game if you told me about it years ago.

now just gotta wait for localisation

  • Zeik56

    I don’t think I like Rise’s design in this.

    • Warren

Better than Kanamis’ outfit, i mean how are you going to look cute if you dress like some hot mess from Mcdonalds?

  • Wolfs_Rain

I like the cel-shaded graphics;they’re definitely a big step up from P3/4. I wonder if this is what P5 will look like.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Talk about unrealistic. Nobody goes back after leaving! The jimushos would never allow it.

    • Shippoyasha

Well, she smartly cited ‘health reasons’ for quitting so..

    • Göran Isacson

I did not know what “Jimusho” was before reading this comment. Then I googled it. Now I am sadder for knowing.

  • xe7en

Hope there’s a Junes theme extended version. www

  • Servant BerserCAR

Okay… But I still don’t understand why must dance though. The guy isable to summon more than 100 personas and has dated more girls than Tony Stark, yet…

Ah screw it, I’ll buy it because of Rise ♥

    • Sardorim

This is all just a ploy by Rise for more Yu time.

      • Servant BerserCAR

and for that, Rise threw Kanamin into the TV world. Damn. O_o

        • Morricane

Great. No need to play the game now. We already know the entire story :D

          • Servant BerserCAR

Should tag [SPOILER ALERT] up there XD

    • tubers

      (Wish I saved the link)

  • Romancer Ecclesia

Please make this 2 hours of gameplay and 30 hours of story like P4A! Then make replayability high anyway because it’s a Miku game!

  • Kango234

“However, a rumor spreads to the big city that if you open a site exactly at midnight a strange video will play”

Wow, maybe people in this town should stop doing things at midnight.

    • InfectedAI

Takes place in a different town.

    • Tenabrus

Japan in general should stop doing things at midnight, the dark hour, the midnight channel, this new midnight site…

  • Sardorim

Rise seems to be the favored girl out of the cast, huh?

    • Servant BerserCAR

Don’t be mistaken. It’s just because of the type of the game. Rythm game = Idol dance = Rise. I’m sure that if this game is about hotel tycoon, the main char would be Yukiko.

      • Sardorim

Yes but it isn’t, it’s a game that fits Rise as the lead alongside Yu. They could have went with a Meat Eating game if they wanted to showcase Chie for example. Instead they chose this to showcase Rise.

        • Manny Being Manny

Thats because idol games and anime are big in the Japanese industry right now.

    • Prinnydoom

I am pretty sure that the others would show up too. Heck in Naoto’s light novel she gets roped into being a model with Rise. She kinda does that.

  • Espoir

And what does dancing have anything to do with all of this again…?

    • DyLaN

Dancing instead of usual fare this time around.

  • Tenabrus

So…does… does this really mean this game is canon? cause that’d be amazing. I still want to see Adachi and Dojima on the playable character list… And I swear to god they better localize this…

    Also because I can’t resist:

    • Androu1

It seems to be canon, yes. Set after P4A2. Not sure if that sets it before P4G’s epilogue or after.

      • Hexodious

Before. Everyone on the team got a makeover which they don’t have in either P4A 1 and 2. I guess it’s more accurate to say that it happened after P4G’s True Ending or before Yu’s vacation after the True Ending, that’s when Rise went back to work.

      • AttorneyAtMusic

Since it takes place outside of Inaba, it certainly can be somewhere between the conclusion of the Arena line and the P4G epilogue.

      • Lynx

That doesn’t necessarily mean its canon though. Trinity Soul was set years after 3 and when Akihiko was an adult but it’s not canon.

You can have a story take place after an entry and still have it not be canon. With Arena, they explicitly stated it was canon. Unless they do the same here, I’m thinking it’s not canon.

        • Strain42

The thing about Trinity Soul though (and Persona x Detective for instance) is that they contradicted the games. When you contradict the games (and in TS’s case the big guys flat out said it wasn’t) that’s when you become non-canon. Honestly right now there’s no reason to assume that this isn’t, crazy as that may sound.

          • Lynx

-Honestly right now there’s no reason to assume that this isn’t, crazy as that may sound.

Aside from the fact that would be like 3 times they repeated the same plot?

And the fact they don’t refer to it in Arena.
            Or Golden’s epilogue.
I doubt it would be referred to in Arena 2 either.

Something can still happen after something else and still be not canon. Trinity broke rules but so did Arena and this, given the plot summary. Especially if you go back to 4. Arena however was called canon and with good reasons. Unless this ties in with Arena and happens in between the original and 2, I don’t see how it could really be canon otherwise.

          • doubleO7

Dancing all Night is set 6 months after P4, which places it 4 months after the events of both Arena games, so of course its not referenced by them. They could easily reference the events of Arena in the dancing game though.

          • Strain42

Mind if I ask for your source on that? I’ve been trying to get the timeline right here. Six months after P4 would be around September, right? So that would still probably be post Golden epilogue and doesn’t really contradict existing story.

          • doubleO7

That came straight from a Famitsu article. Where it states Dancing is set “half a year” after the Inaba murders were solved.

ANN and Destructoid translated the article when they reported the new game announcements.

          • Strain42

Cool beans, thanks everyone. So yeah, if it takes place in September that would most likely be post Golden ending.

The only question remaining now is did Kanji bleach his hair again or is Dancing Kanji gonna be sporting that stylish black?

          • Mirai

Its stated here that P4D takes place 6 months after P4 which would mean P4D takes place in September which is after the epilogue of P4G as this takes place in August.

          • Strain42

It wouldn’t need to be addressed in Arena (why should it, this game didn’t exist when Arena came out. That’s like saying P4 might not be canon because it wasn’t mentioned in P3) It’s already a very safe assumption this game doesn’t take place between P4 and Arena.

So basically it probably takes place either between the Arena games and the Golden epilogue (which I will admit may make it non-canon since the Golden epilogue implies this was the first time they’d seen Yu since “that craziness in May.”) or simply taking place post-Golden epilogue, which could potentially mean no problems continuity wise.

I’m not saying this game is canon, I’m just saying it might be. When Arena was announced people were also pulling out the “It’s a non-RPG spin-off title, it can’t be canon!” card. I think we need to just wait and see, and be open to the idea that it might be.

  • MrGlitters

Please make a PVC figure of Yu in that pose too

  • Nitraion

Wow i say it again the graphic is nice :D
    will be P5 like this?

  • Aesma

    So… Dancing Siscon Banchou?

  • Raze

    lol Yu and Izanagi

So the Persona will dance too?

  • natchu96

Saving the world, one dance move at a time.

He should really get a job for “saving the world with swag”, he’s been doing it a lot.

    • The Dance for Everybody’s Souls. gettin’ it down with Igor for a dance move fusion.

  • Ben Sylvia

    Oh god yes Izanagi dancing.

    I’m sold. Take my money!

  • Yuu and Izanagi tearin’ up the dance floor! It’s genius!

    • Hashim Kutbi

  • Yu really doesn’t want to get rid of that Yasogami High uniform…

    • Warren

Who could blame him, if i had to wear a high school uniform again I would rather wear that than the boring one we had to wear at my school.

  • Detrimont

i’m kinda hoping this game goes in the direction of Madoka Magica(some people will know what i’m talking about)

    • DyLaN

      No “Cake Planet” please.

    • doubleO7

      I’ve seen Madoka, but I don’t know what you’re talking about…

Isn’t Persona already similar to Madoka, at least as far as the basic plot goes? Teens fighting monsters in an alternate world (or sorts)?

      • Detrimont

it’s cutesy and everything until episode 3

  • komiko12

    The dancing game is canon!
I thought it would be one of those plotless spin-offs but its a good thing they decided to give it some background.

Also, Rise’s appearance reminds me of Junko Enoshima. Weird.

    • Mirai

You’re not the only one, her hair style and some of her poses are really similar to Enoshima Junko’s. I’m sure its just a coincidence….hopefully.

  • TheAnswerisback

I mean this is great and all, I like anything with Persona in the title is a buy for me but I would rather have a Persona arena port for Vita than this just my opnion. Vita users derserve at least a really great game after all the sales they got from Persona 4 golden but anyways I’ll mostly likely buy this

    • TheExile285

No Arena port made me sad

      • TheAnswerisback

tbh that was what I was expecting to come for the vita since it would be easily do-able , look how easy and nice most fighters transition on handheld like Blazblue, DOA, UMC 3 etc

    • KuroNathan

if P4A got ported to the Vita I’d pretty much never stop playing the game

      • TheExile285

Same. I barely play it on PS3 not because its bad or anything but because I rarely play my PS3.

  • Göran Isacson

I have no idea if this is gonna be canon or not, or how dancing is going to solve this situation, but I have but one hope: one desire!

Kanji and Naoto doing a Fred and Ginger-esque dance number to some swinging music. And Kanji has to wear the Marilyn Monroe outfit. Do not deny me this glory, Atlus. Pretty please?

  • Mirai

This game is all Rise’s plan of getting some more time with her “adorable senpai” and smirking at the other P4 girls, feeling that Rise has one-upped them the other girls had no intention of losing to her and joined in on the dance.

  • Tom Toonami

    >Rhythm game with plot
    I’m happy and sad
Happy cuz rhythm games are finally playable,. and sad cuz rhythm games are now playable and I suck at that shit

  • OlimacFTW

I wonder what kind of game Atlus will make next:
    Persona 4: Answering the census.

  • Strain42

I’m still really curious as to when this takes place.

It obviously makes no sense for it to take place between P4 and Arena (both)

It also makes no sense for it to take place between Arena and the Golden epilogue, since that epilogue implies that’s the first time they’ve seen Yu since “that craziness in May.”

So really the only time frame that makes any sense is for this to take place post Golden epilogue. But…does that mean dancing Kanji will be blacked haired Kanji?

    • doubleO7

It takes place 6 months after P4 (which means 4 months after both Arena games). I don’t know where that falls in relation to P4G’s epilogue.

      • DragKudo

Golden ending takes place in Summer i think August.

  • doubleO7

The Detective Naoto novel/manga isn’t canon right? But the plot of Dancing, with this mysterious website that takes people to the “other side,” sounds an awful lot like the Midnight Site (or Mayonaka Site, if you prefer) thats featured in DN…

  • Yan Zhao

Narukami’s swag level is over 9000.

  • junir

Lol… what is Rise wearing or rather isn’t? Wonder why the idol company skimped on her clothing. Poor girl :-(

    • TheExile285

      Quiet you! :P

    • Steven Higgins

      Did you not play P4?
They market her as an over-sexed bimbo. Tha’s why she’s dressed that way.

      • junir

I did play it. My comment was more of a “poking fun at silly wardrobe” and design choice of the art team heheh.

        • Steven Higgins

Ah. Well at least it’s better than Kanamin. She looks like Ronald McDonald’s illegitimate daughter in that red and yellow getup.

          • TheExile285

  • ZekeFreek

I remember Kaname looking much different in the anime.

    Consistency? What’s that?

  • Tom_Phoenix

P4 has some awesome music, but will there be an option to use custom tracks? Because honestly, I’d be a lot more interested in this game if I could have Yu or Rise dancing to some 70’s classics:

    • JohnNiles

I was just thinking that Stayin Alive syncs perfectly with the P4G opening.

    • DesmaX

      It would be cool, but…

It’s kinda hard to take a certain music, and work on them to generate the notes for them. Especially for a game with Project Diva gameplay.

Try Audiosurf on the PC, you’ll understand what I mean

  • Kaetsu

The story is like a mix between P4 and DeSu.

  • JohnNiles

Funny, after all the hoopla, only now has it sunk in that Rise is _playable_, after being relegated to P4/P4G/P4A announcer duty for so long. *sob sob*

  • I’m going to dance all night like a boss lol

  • mike dickson

igor better be playable in this he would be badass

  • Oltheros

How are they going to localize this? Dub every song? I’ll bet you Rise will do some singing in this one so I’m curious.

    • DragKudo

You do know that almost all the songs are in English(engrish) right?
And Hatsune Miku got localized. Laura Bailey song True story so they may Dub the story, but the singing will be Rie K.

      • Oltheros

Kind of defeats the purpose if its supposed to be the CHARACTER singing. Now more than ever Atlus needs dual audio. Whoops time to leave before people get riled.

        • DragKudo

She isn’t sing the songs. I mean she is but we are going to hear Yumi Kawamura , lotus juice, and Hirata singing. True story will probably be the only one that will have different versions.

  • Takui Nanao

    cant wait seems great

  • Bobby Jennings

I guess I won’t be playing this one. But I’ll get the story from Youtube or something.

    • buddyluv324

      Gamers today…lol

      • Bobby Jennings

Just not a fan of the rhythm games :P

        • buddyluv324

Its not the genre preference I was getting at. Not everyone is going to be into rhythm games and such. It the “trend” of some gamers taking the easy way out and looking up lets play videos on games through youtube just for a games story. Its just lazy in my opinion.

          • Bobby Jennings

I respect that. However I’m not going to play a game I don’t want to just for the story. Sorry to disappoint.

  • DragKudo

MAN please have Orpheus with Headphones bumping the music from his chest. They need to put the dancing personas in this.

  • There are some minor translation errors about the story info you’ve posted here. Nothing big, but I thought I’d point them out after reconfirming with native Japanese sources. First, Kanamin Kitchen is a separate idol group that’s run by the same company Rise works in; it’s named after Kanami, who leads them as Rise’s kouhai/understudy. And second, as the dialogue in that first screenshot implies, multiple members of Kanamin Kitchen have already disappeared by the time the game starts and not just one. Technically the latter point is already established later on in the article, but some of the earlier wording is conflicting with this, so I thought I’d just chime in on that, too.

    Just thought it’s worth mentioning!

  • M’iau M’iaut

Kanamin, please play nice with your onee-chan Kugimin now.
