Hyperdimension Neptunia Spinoff Does Its Best Solid Snake Impression

By Spencer . December 6, 2013 . 12:36am

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series is rife with video game gags and obscure references. Planet Destroyer Black Heart, a strategy RPG starring Lastation leader Noire, is no different. One of the playable characters looks like a parody of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. Rid is described as a cool character with a serious personality. She surprises cowardly enemies with traps and her favorite one is hiding in a cardboard box. You can see this skill in the trailer and it’s called "Stealth Hunting" in the Vita game.

Ester is probably a Dragon Quest parody and a riff on Erdrick, the hero from the first game in the series. Her personality is for better or worse naive and she calls herself a hero. When she sees something evil she rushes into action, which often gets her into trouble. Ester is looking for some legendary item.

Hyper Goddess Creed Noire: Planet Destroyer Black Heart comes out for Vita on May 29, 2014.

I’m guessing the “Riddo” or “Rid” comes from Soriddo, or Rid. As in, “Solid.”
A gender bent Solid Snake is really, really long past due. :P
(The Dragon Quest III hero has been gender bent a million times before for some reason, but those are for markedly different reasons…. lol)

    • Brandonmkii

To be fair, the DQ3 hero has no canon gender.

      • Theob Vious Choice

Ah, sweet! Didn’t know that, the only DQ games I played were 1&2, I might have played a bit of 3, but idr; thanks for the clarification King Slime guy.

        • Brandonmkii

It’s kind of silly because regardless of which gender you pick for the hero, you’re refereed to as a boy, and your sprite doesn’t change either.

          • Theob Vious Choice

That’s actually pretty funny, and weird lol. :P

  • Man does this look fun! So many new characters and the battles look like their filled with action. Rid’s box attack was funny too. This upcoming May it’s planet destroying time =^_^=

  • makubexnas

Finally a MGS game that has biggest PLOT ever !!!!. Everyone surely will not see this PLOT twist coming.

    • AkuLord3

I don’t think people would want to see them Twist lol

    • Raltrios

You want a PLOT twist? I’ll give you a PLOT twist!

      • makubexnas

wow i’m totally not see that coming……

  • Roberto

    Looks good
hope from more characters like Belmont-chan

    • Landale

That pretty much immediately brought to mind Kokoro from Otomedius Excellent. It would be nice to see someone like her in this.

  • Sentsuizan_93

My interest has piqued quite considerably… ^_^

    • Linhua

      n_n … ditto.

  • Loli Summoner

I’m happy neptune is playable, because if she wasn’t….
Also the HDN series must be really popular,”I’ve” never seen a game series push out this many games this fast.

    • Landale

It’s fairly popular. As for the massive number of games all at once, it helps that they have a few other companies helping out and that they reuse a lot of things from previous games, something I’ve occasionally seen Idea Factory and Compile Heart get a lot of shit for despite being far from the only companies to do that.

    • malek86

It’s not particularly popular, I’ve never seen a game break 50k units yet, even with the anime boosting its popularity. But its fanbase seems fairly hardcore, since sales haven’t really dropped either.

I guess they noticed that, which is why they are trying to pump out a lot of games at once. Mind, I don’t think they are spending a lot of money on each game.

  • malek86

This game really has two possibilities:

    1) It keeps the Neptune trend going, and ends up as Sting’s best-selling game in a very long time
    2) It keeps the Sting trend going, and ends up being the lowest seller of the Neptune games

Also, from the website: I wonder if this is just a mistake, or if the game was originally in development for the PSP and they forgot to change the credits.

    • Landale

I do recall some stuff about Noire being talked about back when mkII was being worked on, so it’s entirely possible that for a while they’d considered putting it on the PSP. They might also just be doing something like Namco with God Eater 2 and having it on both systems.

      • malek86

I don’t know, the PSP logo doesn’t appear in the first row. I think it’s a mistake in the second row. We’ll see, but I doubt the game is coming out on two platforms (even if those graphics don’t look like anything the PSP couldn’t handle, which reinforces my idea that it was originally developed on there and ported later).

Anyway, it will probably be corrected soon.

    • chibiwall

there’s no way it is coming on psp

    • pekikuubik

Those possibilities aren’t mutually exclusive. :P

  • chibiwall

I see parodies of metal gear, monster hunter, hatsune miku and dinasty warrior

    • neocatzon

      Don’t forget Ester!

  • I so~ want this! I’ve come to know IF/CH at the right time. Love the HDN series from the little I’ve played. This and Re;Birth 1/2 are going to be some wonderful additions to my ever-growing Vita library.

Edit: From the site there are 15 other characters yet to be revealed. Can’t wait.

    • Just noticed that Riddo, from the full artwork, has an exclamation mark on top of her right boob. Ah, the subtle references to the Metal Gear franchise.

      • Luis Camargo

        I wouldn’t exaclty call THAT subtle =P

  • The HDN series is really starting to surprise me. I think we can all agree that the first game needed some work, but the developers persevered and continue to make improvements with each game. Now, we have this spin-off title that looks impossibly promising. Here’s hoping for a localization announcement and a quick release to follow!

  • Luis Camargo

Should I scream RIIIIIDDOOOOOOOO everytime she gets a KO ?

  • TheExile285

    This game needs a God Eater-chan :V

    • Landale

If I’m not mistaken there is an NPC in Lastation in Victory rather similar to Lindow. There were also NPCs based on Monster Hunter and Metal Gear Solid in Lastation. Given the trend, there’s probably a pretty good chance there’ll be a God Eater inspired girl, not like the games lack designs to draw from for a parody character.

  • Learii

so Noire the main char in this one huh

  • Demeanor

It looks very good, but I’m still a bit put off by the SD choice. Noire deserves better!!! Oh well, Felistella, you know what game to remake next! XD

  • InfectedAI

Damn, how many Big Boss clones did they make?

  • k.b.a.

is every woman in japan a seiyuu yet?
