Tales Of Zestiria Announced For PlayStation 3

By Sato . December 12, 2013 . 2:26am

In commemoration of the Tales of series’ 20 year anniversary, Namco Bandai held a special NicoNico Live stream, to look back at the franchise’s past work and to announce the latest title in Tales of Zestiria for PlayStation 3.

After thanking fans and staff members, series producer Hideo Baba presented a video of the latest game, Tales of Zestiria. The game takes place in a world has once fallen to darkness, but has regained light thanks to a high-priest. However, after ages of peace, darkness returns and this time the priest is nowhere to be found.

The character designs will be done by series artists Mutsumi Inomata (Graces), Kosuke Fujishima (Symphonia), Daigo Okumura (Dawn of the New World), and Jin Iwamoto (Radiant Mythology).

Not much was revealed, but they announced that the male character seen above is named Slay, and the girl is Alicia. The game takes place in a world called, Green Wood, and producer Baba mentioned that they will be focusing a lot on exploration.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for PlayStation 3.

hmmmm still ps3? thought we had enough tales games on ps3. would have been a nice time to announce a next gen title. oh well still nice to have a steady stream of tales games(if not a bit too many :p).

although i have to be honest not really feeling. the character designs of the protagonists but i’ll wait to see the trailer

    • Randgriz

I dont think any japanese JRPG developers are ready to go onto next gen just yet. Most are mid-tier companies so i think JRPGs wont appear on next gen until well into 2014/2015 (annoucements i mean)

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Doesn’t have to be all graphics to be on next gen, any look at the launch titles will tell you that. Disgaea 3 was on PS3 and had PS2 quality graphics and still sold well. The Atelier games have never looked that great and are on PS3. It’s about content, not graphics.

        • Randgriz

Right you are, i wasnt specifically talking about graphics either though – i think just being on Next-gen this early is a bit of a bad idea. The console isnt even out yet for japan but people are expecting jrpg releases on it. It needs to be established for about 7-8 months or maybe longer before jrpg migration happens.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

The way I think about it is that 2015 is vague, it could be late 2015 or so which would be 2 years off, especially till it comes state side. Yeah the fanbase i on PS3, but a lot of PS4’s are out there and growing daily. Its the fastest selling console of all time(Source PSBlog). Plus it hasn’t even launched world wide yet. I am sure Japan will net another 500K or so at least, a good chance a lot of them will be part of the fanbase since People want KH3 and FFXV which is hopefully a late 2014-early 2015 window.

        • Arcana Wiz

isnt about graphics, it’s all about target audience, who arent in the ps4 in japan.

      • FlyingPony

True that, jRPG developers have this trend to slower in adapting the newer console. Perhaps due to jRPG nature that didn’t require lots of power, cost is lower to develop on last gen console, and the audience itself late in adopting newer console.

    • Tiduas

I definitely agree about the designs. Especially the male one just felt a little awkward in some scenes but I hope it’s just a temporary thing that I will get over soon since the rest of the game looked nice :)

    • Jonas Bern

It’s smart because the amount of people owning a PS3 compare to PS4 is A LOT . Meaning that they would sell a LOT more of games on the PS3 platform, as they already is a pretty risky developer.

just like Pokémon, they made Pokémon Black/White and Black2/White2 because the 3DS didn’t had sold well compare to 3DS to make that risky jump.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Tales of games usually sell around 1 mil worldwide, so there is more than enough of any console out for them to put it on there. Granted the target audience may not be there yet, but by the time this comes out it will be. Might wait for Gaikai support or something.

    • EinMugenTenshin

I don’t know, the female on the right seems original enough, the fellow on the left I must say look really standard, so I hope they build in some good personality.

But to be fair, the Tales crew has proven to be among the best writers in the RPG world. I mean, every single cutscene or conversation pop up (love those!) are more fun and entertaining than the whole story of other modern RPGs.

  • icecoffemix

    Welp, forgot it was today.

Hope Xillia 2 does well so it can go offshore!

  • katzedan

what great news to see when I just woke up *-*
hope I can play that really soon *-*

  • AlphaSixNine
  • Nitraion

    PS3!! PS3!! PS3!! lol
I guess i still play it until like 2016 until P5 and this game released

    • Zangetsu777

It will be 2015 that’s the deadline for PS3 support

      • mockturtle

Is this an official thing or just your own estimation?

        • Zangetsu777

Its official Sony is stopping PS3 support at the end of 2015 & Microsoft is stopping 360 support at the end of 2016

          • Isaac Newton

            Sir give us link.

          • mockturtle

          • Zangetsu777
          • WingsOfEternity

That doesn’t necessarily mean they will force developers to go next gen by end of 2015. Dropping support is like, stopping all further manufacturing, no more system updates, etc.

          • Zangetsu777

yeah but when they stopped support for the PS2 back in 2011. They stopped game development as well in 2011.

And when the original Xbox was discontinued in 2008. That’s is also the same year games stopped coming out for the original Xbox.

          • Ping92

the psp still has games for it even now

          • Isaac Newton

I think the article is for the western audience not entirely the whole world.

          • Zangetsu777

sony is still supporting the PSP it hasn’t been discontinued yet

          • zweii

FFS! Did you even read any of these articles?

All of them pratically said the PS3 support maybe even longer than the 10-year-life cycle sony boasted at the start of this gen. Nowhere in those 3 said anything about stopping at 2015. Only IGN comes close but even then its the opposite of what you say “Sony’s VP of hardware marketing John Koller has revealed the company will continue to support the PS3 until at least 2015 with a range of first-party content.”

          • Zangetsu777

LOL I just read the email where you responded to me. And yes I read all the articles I posted.

And allow me to clear up a few things.

For starters I’m fully aware what each article says about 1st party support ending. But at the same time you need to realize that a console generation can’t last forever.

And I say this because 2014 & 2015 will be the climax of the PS3 era. And I say this because think of al the great games coming out for PS3 in 2014 & 2015.

Tales Of Symphonia Chronicles, Tales Of Xillia 2,
Tales Of Zestiria, Persona 5, Dark Souls 2,
Blazblue Chronophantasma, Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, FF13: LR, FFX X-2 HD, Castlevania: Lords Of Shadows 2, Drakengard 3 etc. etc.

And who knows what they will announce at E3. But my point is the fact that all these great games are coming out now. Means that it can only be a send off to the PS3 era. Just like they did with the PS2.

2nd off if you haven’t noticed that most of the indie developers have already jumped off the PS3 ship and swam to the PS4 & PSVITA ship. And sony heavily relies & supports Indie titles. And the fact that indie titles have abandoned the PS3 already is not a good sign.

3rd off all these 3rd party developers that you’re praying on to keep the PS3 going already have plans for the next generation. Including Namco.
Tales Of Zestiria will be the last “Tales Of” game for PS3. Namco has already started on Next Gen “Tales” games. Which you can read about here:

            and here:

Another example of this is “Square Enix” they have already jumped to the PS4 & Xone. I mean they have FF14 & FF15 coming out on next gen.
When they clearly could’ve released it on PS3.
You can read about that here:

And I do apologize for being the bad guy on this comment section. I just don’t want you guys to get your hopes up for something that is clearly ending.

          • Zangetsu777
          • Ping92

that is for 360 not ps3 lol. besides the 360 is so dead in japan, i think the ps3 still has a few more years

          • Zangetsu777

lol the PS3 links are below

          • Nitraion

            :O huh? really?
that’s kinda “forcing” no.. “raping the rights”
is this why i must say ” no wonder they announce it before end of 2014″
but IMO that is kinda stopping manufacturing PS3 or something

          • Death Saved

Nah they will be releasing first party titles till 2015 but there is nothing set to force third party devs to stop releasing games for it.

          • LightZero

Don’t be ridiculous the PS3 will be supported for however long they can keep making money. The PS2 lasted a good 12-13 years well above the projected 10 years plan.

      • Nitraion

hopefully this game is gonna be in US by that time…
        but, what support you mean??

        • Zangetsu777

I mean releasing games on the PS3 platform. Basically Sony is giving developers to the end of 2015 to release games for the PS3. after 2015 Sony will stop games being released for PS3

So Basically Sony is forcing developers to go next gen by the end of 2015

          • Isaac Newton

            I think that’s a First World estimation.

        • it will be. the worldwide release refers to the game being simultaneously released in several countries.

      • Isaac Newton

        *Checks my PS2*

      • ZEROthefirst

Like Nintendo with their platforms that only counts for first party titles. Third party developers are free to develop games after the company has dropped support.

    • Death Saved

Haha its a great machine with a great future and i just so happen to have a great backlog to play through so mine is sticking with me for the long run.

      • Crimson_Cloud

Indeed, same with PS2. It had quite a few titles regardless of PS3 which stepped into the scene. So expect to see more awesome games for at least another 2-3 years.

Good news for me anyway. Hell yeah!

    • Romancer Ecclesia

If Persona 5 sells limited edition PS3s, people will still buy it. It’s that good.

  • gangrelion

Focus on exploration? A open world “Tales of” game? This seems likely by seeing how they gave a more U.S. feel to Xillia 2 with modern clothes, terrorists, chorus theme song, silent main character and multiple paths that end up in the same ending. It seems Baba wants to please more U.S. fans by taking inspiration in elements that make success in their games.

    • Death Saved

      US feel?
      dont you mean western.

      • gangrelion

Yeah, pretty much! You’re right! It’s not just in US after all…

        • Emsa

And since Europe has a larger potential customer base (more sold PS3’s) it would be more Europe then US in that case. I personally don’t think it has anything to do with pleasing westerners though, just if you try to have different stories then steampunk isn’t far away from fantasy (and in this case it lives just one portal away), and some great steampunk anime has been released in japan.

          • Death Saved

Also alot of these announced US sales numbers are actually for NA, so thats Canada and Mexico.

    • WingsOfEternity

none of those things are really associated with western gaming, except maybe multiple paths with same ending. Tales has always been about creating an heavy anime-style RPG, iirc the Tales series barely gets enough sales in the west to warrant more localizations, it would be dumb to pull a Square-Enix.

  • dranka

However, after ages of peace, darkness returns and this time the priest is nowhere to be found.
// Then everything changed when Fire Nation attacked.

Not really fond of those charadesign collabs ; / But then I’m Fujishima’s fangirl *shrug*

The enviroment looked boring as always tho.

    • fairysun

I am Fujishima’s fanboy since Ah My Goddess era

  • Jonas Bern

OMG YES… Just hope for a english version now. :D

  • MrBoko

This and P5…*clenches fist* I cannot wait!

    • Shippoyasha

2014 is going to be a painful year for us Persona and Tales fans. Dodging messageboards to avoid spoilers is going to be painful too. They better do a quicker localization job this time around with both titles!

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

It really should have been PS3/PS4. Not likely I will be playing my PS3 much if at all in 2015.

    • ffboi7

I think it has more to do with PS3 userbase>PS4 userbase. Its much easier to release a game for a console that they know already has a higher userbase then a userbase thats still growing in Japan since the PS4 doesn’t come out until next year for Japan.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

        See other comments.

    • Suicunesol

At the rate PS4 releases will be coming, I think you will be.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s take the console begs elsewhere. Every system since the PS1 has seen significant JRPGs among the swan songs. A reveal today means development started with Xilla 2 if not Xillia 1. Hobbyists are basically the last folks to move away from a system, and realistically we are talking not much beyond a year past the new system’s launch.

Few RPGs on the level of a Tales main game have come out that quickly in a lifecycle.

    • Zangetsu777

The Next Tales will be on PS4

  • Isaac Newton

Good god! After the P5 and Tales announcement I can’t wait to play those games. XD

  • Zantetsuken_Gilgamesh

Wow 4 Artists, can’t wait to see some more of the character designs.

    • GH56734

Xillia had two designers collaborate, the one for Symphonia/Phantasia and the one for Graces/Eternia/Rebirth/DS Tales.
It wouldn’t be the first time.. But four designers at once (including one working on the escort series) is something I’m eager to see how it unfolds.

  • Akemi Nakajima

Looking forward to see more details about gameplay.

Ps: Main female character always seems a good deal more interesting than the the male one in Tales series (by look)

  • Alex Cattaneo

  • ReidHershel

I want this game so bad, then again, getting any Tales games is good with me, woot for 2014!

  • Kuroxis

With Xillia 2, ToS Chronicles, and now Zestiria…
Thank you, Hideo Baba, for giving me more reasons to keep my PS3 well into next-gen. ;’)

  • fyi1191

The dude’s clothing resembles Anise’s (TotA).
Is he gonna fight with a book? I would support it.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Right on! I’m always ready for a new Tales game! I won’t need to get a next gen system for a long time at this rate.

  • Billy Kostyra

This is why i love Sony. They keep supporting their consoles for a looooong time.

    • Ethan_Twain

Sony has absolutely nothing to do with this. They are funding neither development nor publication of this game. They are not helping with marketing.

The reason is that the PS3 is the default blu-ray player for a lot of Japan, and in particular for the anime crowd. Namco-Bandai has a stranglehold on not only the licensed anime games market but their Tales franchise is really tailored for that audience too. I suspect we’ll continue to see Tales and anime games show up on the PS3 for quite a while because that entire market is concentrated there.

      • Billy Kostyra

did i say anything about sony funding this game you idiot ?

        • Ethan_Twain

Pardon me if I misunderstood. What DID you mean when you wrote under a new Tales announcement how great it was that Sony continues to support their hardware for a long time?

My point is that Sony has nothing to do with this game, so saying that this game is a sign of them continuing to support the PS3 hardware is incorrect.

        • Ferrick

no need to be defensive and rude when you’re already proven wrong

  • NightzeroAX

“The game takes place in a world has once fallen to darkness, but has regained light thanks to a high-priest. However, after ages of peace, darkness returns and this time the priest is nowhere to be found”.

This reminds me of the trailer for A Realm Reborn.

  • When you wake up in the morning to this type of announcement, you can’t help but to think the rest of your day is going to be great. Yay for more Tales and here’s hoping for a speedy localization!

  • Arcana Wiz

well here is the reveal trailer we have a glimpse of the battle system

    • The art style is nice but why do they keep giving Motoi Sakuraba more work

      • Pfantzypantz

        Because he’s amazing?

    • Kornelious

This kinda looks like the battles will be taking place in real time….That would be AWESOME!

      • John Diamond

or like in chrono trigger. that would be pretty boss. but again for all we know that could be a generic background and they just removed the ui

      • ThunderGod_Cid

The battles have always been in Real-Time, it’s just that it looks like there won’t be any screen transition to a “battle arena” when you initiate a fight.

Like the battles in FFXII(12) or like what John Diamond said, like Chrono Trigger.

  • From the little bit of battle that you do see, I am very interesting in the battle system. Is the dude’s weapon a book!?

    • katzedan

if you look close at the image, there’s something that look like a sheath hanging between his legs… and on his right side you can see the hilt of the sword/knife

      • The images flashed so fast it was hard to see haha. But maybe book has some other use.

    • Aunna Terrell

      He’s a sword user.

      • Aah I sees Thank you :D I was kind of hoping he was using a book but I still like his design~

        • Aunna Terrell

          You’re welcome and I agree! I want a book/tome user too~ They’re my favorite weapons, lol.

Wow, I was expecting some browser / iOS game. I’m very surprised. Pleasantly surprised :)

I wish they’d go back to Vesperia’s art style though.

  • Hyped. For. This. Still got Xillia 2 to come out. It’s going to be some good gaming years ahead of us.

  • Aunna Terrell

Anyone else automatically think Okumura (DotNW) when they saw Alicia’s character design? XD

  • megaten666

    Mutsumi Inomata? I’m ready!
Exploration? I really hope they bring back the overworld map, because that’s how a JRPG should be! Always!
Cell-Shaded graphics would be nice, but oh well…
All I need right now is Hideo Baba’s word for a localization.

    • Lynx

I actually really don’t like Overworld maps. Give me extoic locales that I have to travel through over those.

      Just make them different.

      • megaten666

Overworld maps give the game an epic feel. Well, I’m not against those other kind of field maps found in FF12 for example, but both FF and Tales are just didn’t felt the same after ditching the overworld map. Also overworld maps are more satisfying to explore. Finding Katz Village was always fun, nowadays it’s just a talk-this-and-that side-quest or just simply “meh”-ishly implemented.

  • Emma Lewis

    This is bit.ly/Unbelieveable seriously, #Celebrity

  • Jesse

Good thing we’ve got the overseas trademark already. ~

    • Arcana Wiz

yep~ so happy for so many tales getting localized now.

      • My poor Vita.
But yeah it is good for the rest of the new stuff.

  • Samsara09

well, tales of localization usually takes a year or almost one, like 6-8 months. Can’t say, precisely since graces, xillia and xillia 2 coming out 2 years later was just…out of pattern.
if this games releases next year or beginning of 2015,it doesn’t matter, since we will still be getting it by 2015.It could pull a vesperia and be release at the same time, worldwide, though.
Still,it is kinda cool that the PS3 is gonna get so many rpgs in 2014 and 2015….

  • Yeah PS3!!!!!!!!!!!

  • icecoffemix

The female seems to use spear, how about the male? Is it another Senel/Jude?

    • Ferrick

looks like a mix between senel/jude with richard

      • icecoffemix

        So he’s barehanded fighter? Hmm…

        • Arcana Wiz

sword, just scroll down some comments and you will see the image that aunna posted.

        • Ferrick

          mix of fish and sword

          • icecoffemix

            “fish and sword”

I was honestly contemplating this idea since it’s not rare for Tales character to have, exotic, weapon (Norma use bubble blower for example). Then I realize you meant Fist and left disappointed (sorta). :P

          • Ferrick

            lol oops XD

          • CirnoLakes

            Frying pan!
            Slay is a master cook!

  • FFxv battle sistem?

  • I’m meh on the character designs (SUPER retreads!), but I am all for the protagonist being a magic book wielder. I hope that is actually the case.
Curious to see how big a role the dragons play, and how well the exploration element of the game will be designed. Some games get it right and give the world a real sense of wonder; other games just have giant open spaces full of nothing, and slap an “extensive exploration!” sticker on the back cover.

  • Kornelious

YES! This looks awesome. And now that Bamco is giving the west more support this is guaranteed for a localization! Just another reason to keep playing PS3

  • Shippoyasha

I really wish them the best as far as the exploration goes. I always felt that element could be better done in Tales games and I’m glad they are putting some more attention that way.

  • Gilgamesh2025

Awesome! Can’t wait to see more details of ToZ! :D

  • Eder García

    inb4 “Baba san!!! Y U NO VITA?”

  • Unlimax

The main character Custom is an epic mix between Wander and ICO
I’m holding so many expectations for this game and it seems really promising :]
    So Hyped ~

  • Slayven19

We’ve done it guys! WE MADE NAMCO BELIEVE!!

  • Learii

    i hope this be locailzed

  • Matheus Mendes

So….. does anyone have a PS3 laying around that you don’t use? a dusty PS3…… I really hate my xbox, instead of buying a PS4, i’m gonna buy a PS3.

  • Pinwheel

“The game takes place in a world has once fallen to darkness, but has
regained light thanks to a high-priest. However, after ages of peace,
darkness returns and this time the priest is nowhere to be found.”

I don’t want to piss on the joy parade or anything, but am I the only one who thinks that sounds horribly cliche and generic?

    • zweii

Maybe it is but its just fine for me. Not everything can be solved by cooking and selling hamburgers.

      • Pinwheel

Your analogy doesn’t make any sense.

        • zweii

Look up Log Horizon. Its good.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Hopefully, this priest is either a badass party member or the actual villain :/
I’m thinking the priest it just the villain…

      • Pinwheel

Most likely, yeah. I like the combat in Tales, but the characters and stories just tend to fall flat for me.

  • Kornelious

Does Slay remind anyone of Ethan Waber from Phantasy Star? or is it just me?

    • Death Saved

      other than the hair, no.

To me he seems to resemble Colette more than anything else, well at least in clothing style and looks.

    • FFmax

That’s a first person I thought of too. He kinda does look like Ethan.

  • makubexnas

    FU*KING YES!!!!!!!!

  • FFmax

Thank god they didn’t make the jump to PS4 yet, I just got a PS3.

    • CirnoLakes

Hmmm, I feel just the opposite. I’m a bit saddened that it’s for the PlayStation 3. But I anticipated it.

Namco has been strongly for the PlayStation 3 for a long time now.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

YES, ii’s not a mobile or browser game!!!!

Anyway, this yet another reason NOT to get a next-gen console anytime soon.

  • CirnoLakes

I was so happy when I first heard this announcement. I still am.
