Wii U Getting TurboGrafx-16 Games Like Bonk’s Adventure And MSX Titles In Japan

By Spencer . December 18, 2013 . 2:32am

imageWii U only has NES and Super Nintendo games on Virtual Console right now, but Nintendo will add two more (virtual) systems on December 25. Japan will get Bonk’s Adventure, a TurboGrafx-16 game, and the MSX version of Parodius.

Super Mario Bros. 3 will also be available in Japan on December 25. Nintendo has Super Mario Bros. 3 with a TBD release in North America. Perhaps, Nintendo will talk about expanding Virtual Console later today.

Keep it up Nintendo. These old systems, especially the super nes, plus all the unique games are why you have me buying a Wii U this month.

I hope someday some service somewhere will get this handheld game, iirc, where you are a race car driver, and you go out into the field and get into rpg style battles, save they are races, to earn cash to upgrade your car for tournaments. I remember when I was a young teenager, sitting in the navy recruiting office where my dad worked, and one of the other guys there had this on a handheld he had. I never got to beat it and would love to rectify that someday just so I can mark it off my to do list.

As a Japan-only deal? They never released those MSX Wii VC games outside Japan. Same goes for PC Engine releases minus the ones localized back in the day plus Rondo of Blood.
And is that a Hudson Soft game? I haven’t see those in ages. Maybe could they get around to release that cancelled Bonk game?

Hudson Soft is no loner around. Their remnants are owned by Konami now so you’ll have to ask Konami.

The only virtual console game I’ll buy from Nintendo is Earthbound. Just so I can finally own that. It never came out in Europe.
The only other virtual console games I’d be interested in is Japan imports or GBA games. And by GBA I mean on my 3DS. Because I swear Nintendo if you release GBA games and put them on the Wii U I’ll be pissed. The 3DS virtual console should be for handheld games. The Wii U can have console games. Besides it’s not like you can’t do it on the 3DS. The GBA can be emulated on a piece of dry toast.

Nintendo segregating VC console and handheld games is a pretty puzzling choice in itself. Nintendo can learn a bit from Sony and copy the cross-buy model. Choice will always be the best solution, mainly because some people want to play VC Wii/Wii U games on the go too.

Emulation and hardware structure issues. Simple as that

  • Bonk! I remember him. I got that game for the original cinderblock Game Boy back in the day.

is the wii u virtual console store separate from the wii virtual console store? if i have wii VC games, can i transfer them to the wii u? (i remember it was possible but not easy, but wondering if that was just a temporary thing).

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

… Uh they’re both in the same device with two stares in WiiU/Wii mode.

      It works quite simply

Yes, the Wii U runs the current eShop system that both it and the 3DS use, so by this point the store in the Wii has long since been replaced. However by switching into the “Wii Mode” (it is like having a Wii built inside your Wii U) http://www.siliconera.com/2012/11/17/wii-u-backwards-compatibility-is-like-a-wii-in-your-wii-u/ you can access the old store still as well as play the old Wii games and such.

You can transfer your old Wii games and data through a system transfer similar to what you can do when you switch your 3DS (and will put all the games into the Wii Mode). You’ll also be given a discount on all the games you have in the sandboxed Wii Mode that do end up on the new eShop for like a dollar or so. That will allow you to play them on the GamePad and have Miiverse and such.

I have faith that the west will see Bonk eventually since the original Wii did have a fairly good selection of TG16 VC titles. Still, i’d prefer it sooner than later. ;)

The 3DS is also getting PC engine games, China Warrior and Gradius on the 25th.
