By Sato . December 19, 2013 . 12:32am

After having recently brought big profits to the company, Falcom have announced that the latest installment in The Legend of Heroes series, Trails in the Flash, will be getting a sequel on PlayStation 3 and Vita, as part of the Trails franchise’s 10th anniversary celebration.

The sequel doesn’t have a name yet, but Falcom announced that it is expected to be released sometime in 2014.

The Trails in the Flash sequel will take place in the same locale as the previous game, featuring Rean and friends. It will also have an enhanced battle system, event scenes, controls, ability system, and more, from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash.

Additionally, Falcom says that they’re been working zealously on the title to have it represent the series’ 10th anniversary.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash’s sequel is currently in development and slated for release next year for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

  • Tatsuya Fabre

I cannot put into words how happy I am right now.

    • And sad I am since I know this will not going to get localized….

      • Duo Maxwell
        • Slayven19

I can’t blame them either because the games are on psp over here. Maybe when it gets to steam we’ll be fine. If the games actually sale well I don’t think they’d care about how much they have to translate.

          • DesmaX

Even if it sold well, the gigantic sides of these games is a problem by itself. Especially if you consider that, by the time they could finish translation one of these games, they could’ve to fully translate 2 games (mininum)

          • Slayven19

You underestimate the power of money my friend. With enough of it they could just hire more people for more projects. By your logic it doesn’t really make sense to localize any jrpg because they all have more translation to do than your average action, platformer, fighting or adventure game.

          • DesmaX

Well, there’s not much types of games in japan to localize anyway.

And, anyway, you’re not paying your bills by starting a project that will only start generating revenue 2 years (aproximately) after

          • dis be gud

Fair enough to say that having more money and staff will increase the localization speed, but have you stopped to think where the money comes from? Trails is very niche, it has no chances to compete with stuff that Scamco and SE churns out every few years in the west. In the end, it’s going to be the same people buying the game and the profit will remain more or less the same, which is not enough to pay off all the new employees even if XSEED can hire them.

          • Ladius

Not singling you out, but I don’t understand the Scamco thing nowadays, considering how good they’ve been to us in terms of localizations in the last years.

I agree on the other points you made, though, with Trails’ sales it’s already great SC is actually coming west. Let’s hope Steam sales can improve the situation.

          • dis be gud

And then comes the DLC, the F2P, etc. When I say Scamco, I think of the bullshit they tried to pull with Ridge Racer and Ace Combat. To a degree, Gundam and [email protected] as well (Okay, definetly [email protected]). Their DLC marketing strategy is terrible, but it works because there are morons like me who are willing to bite. ‘Scamco’ is more like self directed sarcasm now instead of insulting the company.

          • FlyingPony

I perfectly understand the financial issues, but could it be the problem of the low sales is lacks of exposure?

The jRPG audience is still, there, the sales of Ni no Kuni good, Tales of Xillia was good enough, so there is still enough people for the genre jRPG in west to survive. And many of the buyer insist Trails as the better jRPG recently, so its not the quality issue either.

It could be the lacks of exposure problem. Tales is popular franchise, and Ni no Kuni was made by infamous Gibli studio, and Trails have none of that brand recognition, so it sales pretty bad. Maybe if the team localized more of the Trail games, and promote it better, fans will spreading more of the love and it will sell better.

One thing for sure, Trails game will remain unknown in west if nobody localized it

          • DesmaX

Nah, for one thing, Namco is a lot bigger than Xseed, so they can Market the game to a way bigger audience.

And, of course, Trails is a lot nichier than those other games (Extremely Slow-Paced combat, Cutscenes that seems to never end, sub-par graphics…), so even if it would be picked by a bigger publisher, it wound’t sell as godd as those other games

          • dis be gud

Put simply. In the west, trails is a niche series pushed out by a company that doesn’t have a good footing (Falcom) or backing (XSEED) in a nicher environment populated by giants of the said niche industry (NBGI, SE, NIS, etc). XSEED bit off more they could chew when they decided to localize Trails in the Sky. It’s a good stroke of luck they had another group helping them out and they actually managed to get SC done. Else I’m guessing the project probably would have been stalled or have proceeded at a snail’s pace. XSEED and Falcom just doesn’t have the capacity to compete with the aformentioned giants.

It’s a different story in Japan, of course. But that doesn’t matter.

          • Arcana Wiz

the problem is that Trails DONT make money, the first one didnt sell well, so yeah.
Edit: in the west i mean.

        • DyLaN

Dat SC scenario length. God bless the peeps translating SC.

      • Victor Wesker

I played japanese version of The Legend of Heroes: Trails In The Flash and i have not got any problems. So you can easily play this game without understanding japanese.

        • Ladius

Considering the main point of the Trails games (and story driven jrpgs, in general) is enjoying the plot, characters and setting and not simply get to the end without understanding what’s happening, I don’t think that’s really an option.

      • tonyp1987

I read an article that is coming to the us/eur because how well ys memories did on the vita

        • Ladius

Nothing like this was ever announced, and Ys MoC has been released less than a month ago.

The new Trails game that was officially announced was Trails in the Sky SC (the second game in the series, this latest announcement is about the seventh), which will be out in 2014 for PC and PSPVita.

      • DyLaN

Well, the sequel games got localized be4 the previous ones happens be4. But I heard Sora-Zero-Ao-Sen are all connected so….

  • Geez, Falcom calm down! How are we supposed to keep up? Fine! I can wait!

  • Bojan Njegomir

Of course it’s coming….but not for us! :(

  • 紅蓮

    I love Emma’s new costume <3

  • ReidHershel

Funny how someone basically joked about this in the last Legend of Heroes articles, seriously, how do they make games so quickly?

    • 永次

    • Arcana Wiz

      ….. i think they work in this 24 hours a day for 7 days a week…

    • fqc

Developed in parallel with the previous game. Falcom plan quite far ahead with the series.

    • Ladius

Considering this game is probably set in the same region as the first Sen game, the Erebonian empire, they already had lots of work done in terms of areas, models and battle system and will just have to expand and tweak it. The first game apparently ended with a big cliffhanger, which probably means they had this sequel sorted out long before the first Sen came out, and maybe worked on both at the same time during Sen’s las development stretch.

    • dis be gud

It’s not a big secret or anything, Siliconera just reported on it very, very late.

  • CirnoLakes

It looks like XSEED’s backlog just got a little bit bigger.

If Falcom are going the COD/AC way with annual releases for the Kiseki series we’re damned to even try to catch up

    • Ferrick

now there’s two words you wouldn’t want to see in the same paragraph as a kiseki/ys game

  • Dang, this series is more popular than I thought. Has Trails always been this big in Japan?

    • The Kiseki series has been Falcom’s big selling series now. It reliably sells more games than any other title they’ve released.

  • nathaniel

never played legends of heroes games. but if this ever comes to america, im buying the hell out of it

    • Arcana Wiz

well, you should play the first game of the series, which was released in america in the psp and will be released on PC…. the second game is coming next year and this game is the seventh of the series.

    • Ladius

If you want this series to have a chance in the west, you can start by playing the first game, Trails in the Sky, out on PSN since some years ago and soon available on Steam. Its sequel, Trails in the Sky SC, will be released on both Steam and PSPVita in 2014.

  • Arcana Wiz

…. Another!? geez falcom, i am hoping to play the second game and you’re already at the seventh game.

    • The last game ended on a major cliffhanger*. Kondo’s already been talking about the next game coming out in 2014 for a few weeks at this point. This is just official confirmation.

(*Worse than the cliffhanger in FC even.)

      • MrTyrant

Yes it was worse. The latest hours were just AMAZING and the game just end with a “yamerooooo!” hahaha

      • Arcana Wiz

i’m just kidding about localization here, i know of the cliffhanger ending ;D

      • JeremyTMH

It wasnt that bad. That or I was used to worse cliffhangers. :/

  • Alexander Aubert

i’m happy but not happy, you guys know what i meant right?

  • Nanaki

I hugging my Legend of Heroes games for the PSP right now, hoping that one day Westerners are able to experience even more from this series in their native language. :'(

  • DesmaX

Well, not surprised. That ending was just like the Assassins Creed ones

    • Slayven19

Cliffhangers or bad? Because to me only AC1 had a good ending.

      • DesmaX

        • Slayven19

All their games have cliffhangers if I’m not mistaken correct? Then again all AC games have them as well…I just think developers don’t like to end stories fully anymore especially the one’s that pop a game out every year, like well falcom and ubisoft lol.

          • MrTyrant

No. 3rd and Zero doesn’t end in cliffhangers. SC and Ao finish the story of their respective characters “as happy endings”

  • Kornelious

Well…there goes every hope i had on the first game being localized :(

  • DanielGearSolid

The Ps3 jrpg scene has literally exploded in the last few months. Might catch up to Ps2 JRPGs if this keeps up

  • dahuuuundge

It is more likely for you to learn Japanese than for Xseed to localize it in your lifetime.

  • Somewhere deep inside of me I have to believe it’s a new Brandish

  • dis be gud

I hope Crossbell is more relevant in Sen SC. Ao’s ending may have shown the result of la revolucion, but I’m more interested in seeing it happen through gameplay instead of a few pictures.

    On a totally unrelated note;
    >Trails in the Flash
    *jimmie rustling intensifies*

Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who has a problem with this terribad translation.

    • DyLaN

      “Trails of flash” then?

      • MrTyrant

Flash might not be the correct translation because it can mean a lot of things.

        • dis be gud

Nah, there’s only one translation for 閃. You get more meanings if you attach other kanji characters to it. But 閃 by itself is just flash.

  • Yan Zhao

Please localize Trails in the Flash :<

    • Alex Shadov

Lazard Deusericus: Ah, good! Unattainable dreams are the best kind.

  • I hope the first one has a chance at localization. From the very beginning Trails In The Flash stood out, and looked really good. I hope one day I get the chance to play it =)

    • DyLaN

Funny thing is, I saw a fanart of a dude tht resemble Iskandar over pixiv and Ao immediately stood out (to me) XD

Though seriously, dat art of Sen and the sinon-like loli in the pic.

  • Cyril Murasakitsuyukusa

Hopefully part 1 will be localized in the West next year >_<

    • DyLaN

Not tht I don’t want it to happen, but we are lucky enough to even get TitS SC at this point. And then there 3rd, Zero and Ao.

      • Alex Shadov

Not to mention that PSP is dead and Vita owners are scarce… Sora no Kiseki is a great game, but the probabilities we get the full trilogy is pretty small.

    • Won’t happen. Each title is intricately connected. Unless they want to screw up the story they need to localize SC, 3rd, Zero and Ao first. Which could take forever and then some :'(

  • fireemblembeast

T-that was fast!! =___=; I haven’t had a chance to finish the first one yet! This came out of nowhere lol

    • Sergio Macellaro

Thats it is trails in the FLASH!!!

      • fireemblembeast

  • Prinny Dood

Girl : Its no fair i wanna play to. Boy: its ok im sure they’ll announce a localization soon.

    • Leon_Tekashi

After we get the other Legend of Heroes games, which could take a while sadly. =l

      • fyi1191

We will probably have to wait 2-3 decades for them to reach this game. By then I’m not sure the PS3 is even alive.

        Fie is awesome as always.

        • JeremyTMH

In 2-3 decades you could have picked up Japanese as another language…

          • Alex Shadov

Which is the most realistic solution. Learn japanese to play the series, because only a miracle can make a localization for all those games. SC, TC, Zero/ Ao and Sen I and Sen II. Yep… goodbye english, hello japanese.

  • エリン

Excited~! I hope there will be some sort of bonus if you played the original. Also, I’d love to be able to interact more with your teammates, especially Elliot. <3

  • Sergio Macellaro

SnK:TC and Ao no Kiseki comes first, no?

Ao no Kiseki will not receive a third chapter?

    • MrTyrant

I’m pretty sure that Sen no Kiseki ending connected with Ao no Kiseki and Sen 2 probably the character might travel to crossbell or something like that. I’d want to play with some of them with the 3D engine.

I also pretty sure that Kevin/Rief from 3rd will appear in this new game.

  • brostar

    Dear Siliconera.

STOP using “Trails in the flash”. It’s not a good title. Just call it Sen no kiseki like everyone else. Stop trying to localize non localized titles. Just stop. If it is localized it WILL not be called Trails in the Flash.

    For God sake.

  • …. Localize… it…. T_T

  • leingod

Lucky japanese… I’d love to play these.

  • MrTyrant

Are we gonna play with Toval in this game? I realize this just now. He is the main character of a manga.

  • Margaret Chan

How important is it that 3rd be translated? I’ve heard that it’s a small wrap-up? Is it critically essential to have 3rd if you want Zero and/or Ao? And then how connected are those to each other and Flash? At this point, I don’t care, I want them all.

But I know that the length is a large issue and I’d take what I can get…. as long as it’s not on a cliffhanger >_>

    • MrTyrant

Very important because 3rd set things for all the subsecuent games.

Sen no Kiseki is directly tie to Ao no Kiseki. When in Ao no Kiseki we see a terrorist attack for a very important conference between various nations in Sen we see who they were and what they were planning and In Ao we see how the Galliran Fortress is destroyed in Sen that event comes to a big surprise for everyone and the characters wonder how that happened. So both Ao and Sen have connected events. And you won’t begin Ao no Kiseki without playing Zero because It’s like playing SC first instead of FC, Zero brings characters from Sora no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki brings characters from 3rd.

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

Unfortunately, every entry in this series is highly connected, since each game’s plot builds off of the previous entries. You could probably still follow them out of order, but you’d be missing out.

    • JeremyTMH

Very. Its like a pandora’s box to refer to for the overall lore and backstory of the world, and provides a lot of hints which have since come true in Zero/Ao, and the 1st Sen. Heck Sen has references back to 3rd as well…

Also all the stories are connected in chronological order.

Sora FC and SC form Joshua and Estelle’s story and serves as the starter for a long story to come. The icing on the cake.

TC is something like the infodump chapter and is Kevin’s story. Also touches a little on the main antagonists, shows some political events on the continent and also reveals a little about the Church and the myth of the world.

Zero/Ao is Llyod’s story about a small trade city stuck between the borders of 2 cold war enemies and how the city gets stuck up in political and supernatural nonsense. we get more into the myth of the world as well as learn more of the politics going on on the continent.

Sen 1 is Rean’s story and finally the Empire side of things, we see a lot of politics as the Empire enters a state of civil unrest and the people pulling the strings in the background. The ancient past and its mystery is brought forth a bit and this story runs parallel halfway from Zero’s timeline all the way to near the end of Ao (destruction of Garellia Fort).

  • Ferrick

    dat new costumes

wonder if ramilav will have a bigger significance this time around

  • Anesia Hunter

Is it bad that I want them to skip Trails of Zero and Trails of Azure and localize Trails in the Flash and this instead?

    • MrTyrant

Yeah it is. There are important events that are directly connected, what is happening in Ao no Kiseki is also happening in Sen no Kiseki, both provide backgrounds for each other from different sides.

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

that’s why i love my Vita

  • Somethinger2

TC probably won’t be included, The other games can be Vita’d, but this?
They should skip everything and throw this out. The game’s beautiful. Can barely even live with the soundtrack. It’s too much.
