Dragon’s Crown Tops PlayStation Store Charts In Japan

By Spencer . December 30, 2013 . 2:20am

image Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia announced the top selling items on the PlayStation Store and Dragon’s Crown dominated the lists. The Vita version was the number one top downloaded game. Dragon’s Crown for PlayStation 3 was number two followed by Super Robot Wars: Operation Extend, Namco Bandai’s episodic SRT game for PSP.

Also interesting to note is the Game Archives list which is where PsOne Classics and TurboGrafx-16 games are categorized. Square Enix’s games took nine out of the ten spots. Of course, a Final Fantasy game is number one, but take a guess which one is on top.

    Kinda sad at no love for FFVIII ; ;

Weird to see 7 on that list twice, but I guess one is the version that has Ruby/Emerald.

Overall, this is a good list, just wish some of them made it across the pacific.
(Looking at you, Shinovi Versus, God Eater 2, Summon Night 5, and SAO:IM)

    • Mr_SP

Yeah. Final Fantasy VII International is the US version, presumably with Japanese text. It does have a number of upgrades that makes it better than FFVII Vanilla, including two Weapons, and a few playability improvements.

Also, another yeah about the lack of Shinovi Versus.

    • Anesia Hunter

Well, it’s assumed that Xseed has been hinting at Shinovi VS coming out next year. Still silence on the others though. D:

  • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChAgYzpMfD0X9n_9uj6Zghw Jeremy

    Good work Japan!

  • Mr_SP

This makes perfect sense to me. Both the Dragon’s Crown and the SRW.

  • z_merquise

Dragon’s Crown sure is a surprise hit. Belt-scroller is a genre that became forgotten when arcades started to dwindle. I really wish to see more in this genre now that Dragon’s Crown prove that there still life in it.

Also cool to see Skullgirls in the list. Now I wonder if developer Lab Zero can find a new publisher now that Cyberfront closed.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Alot of Japanes devs chose it as their game of the year

  • xxx128

You know what that means boys and girls? Right… Dragon’s Crown 2!!!

    • Erikdayo

I hope they tweak the some of the systems quite a bit and perhaps add in more story and characters that players might actually at least somewhat care about. Thought Muramasa was much better in this aspect. Could use much better and larger dungeons and the ability to backtrack and such. I think they purposely went too far out of their way to eliminate the backtracking that some complained about with Muramasa.

Either way, looking forward to whatever they make next. At the very least it’ll be pretty to look at.

    • Virevolte

It would be surprising. Kamitani has said that he’s not the kind to make sequels. And that he has already poured all the ideas he had in Dragon’s Crown.

But Vanillaware may do something alike. I’m looking forward to it (…in three or four years…?)

      • http://resettears.wordpress.com/ Reset Tears

I really respect that actually, the desire to not rely on sequels for all your successful games. Creating new IPs keeps things fresh and interesting–I look forward to seeing what sort of setting Vanillaware works with next.

    • CH3N9

Idea of this game came to life in 13~14 years ago, and making a great hits today…if there’s no further idea in their plans, rushing to make a sequel from it won’t do any good for the company.

This game need no sequel, it’s perfect as it is. Plus, They might have all sort of idea up their sleeve, waiting for the right time to come. Vanillaware played well, will wait patiently to what they have for the future.

    • easter

They put out DLC for Muramasa like 4 years after the game released so who knows??

      • Guest

That’s for Muramasa Rebirth, a port on the Vita that was only released recently.

    • MaximDualBlade

I doubt it, the game is too unique for a sequel in my opinion. And like someone said, Kamitani isn’t the kind to make sequels

    • hazelnut1112

      One at a time man.
I rather see a different game setting with the same aspects, almost in the like of Streets of Rage, Would be nice to see that there.

  • Rafael Martines

    Fair

  • Alexander Aubert

way to go Vanillaware and Atlus!

  • Ferchenko

Dragon’s Crown is such an awesome game. Totally waiting for a sequel.

  • Pekola

As it should be. Hopefully all the controversy helped it lol. Streisand Effect.

  • Croix Zapp

    Awesome music? Checked
    Unique Graphics? checked
    Solid gameplay? checked
    Regular updates? checked

    No surprise there.

    • Pockystix

it’s a pretty damn great game, that really beat all the controversy (which probably just helped it get more attention than it would have got anyway).

All I think it really needs now are some more classes to play as.

  • LazuliteLiamz

That ‘Game Archives top 10′ list show how much SE had changed since the good old days

  • http://www.staticshin.com/ Akshat Jiwan Sharma

Lots of vita games in overall top 10. Nice to see that soul sacrifice and toukiden are still selling.

  • Folk Hellfang

Looks like the Hunter genre is still kicking. I hope this means we can look forward to God eater 2 for the west soon. Sounds like SK Shinovi Vs is all but confirmed for a western release. I might have tog et that 64GB card after all…

  • leingod

Yay for Vita, Dragon’s Crown and Senran Kagura.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

People REALLY like Dragons Crown over there lol

  • Ramen_Ronin

I absolutely adore Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita. By far my favorite game on the hand held and of this year. I would love to see a PlayStation 4 version in the near future.

  • easter

    Filthy lucre!

  • Arz

i guess tits and ass really does sell.

    • pixxxelz

You’re wrong the game is awesome and that’s why it’s selling so well plus atlus and vanillaware keep making improvements and releasing new content every now and then

      • RickyMack

although apparently 1.05 was the last patch they’ll have for DC. i think the game is in it’s final form with all the improvements. infinite dungeon and level cap at 255? what else is there to put in?

        • pixxxelz

And I’m OK with that they’ve added many things to the game for free you don’t really see those things anymore now its all about microcrapsactions and dlc

    • Herok♞

Play the game before saying silly stuff like that.

      • FlyingPony

Are you expecting them to play the game?

Majority people that complain about the titty actually don’t even play the said game, just keep blabbering nonsense out of their mouth.

        • Arz

except that i played it a bunch. my opinion is valid.

          • buddyluv324

But if you’re not going to put up any sort of academic facts to back up your claim, your words doesnt have much footing. Yes there is obviously fanservice in DC, but of course its not the focus of the actual gameplay. The people who either complain about the t&a calling it sexist and mysogynistic or are just getting the game just for that fanservice dont really care about the gameplay it offers and pretty much have their own priority in gaming as a whole ass-backwords. So if you want to enlighten any facts you can offer that DC is doing well because of the fanservice, we be more than happy to listen.

          • Arz

i’ve always hated in-your-face fanservice. it’s just obnoxious. i’m not Mysogynistic or anything but those things should stay in porn or hentai (which i watch a lot but that’s not the point there). so to me the graphics are beautiful artstyle that’s been smeared with shit. but my other issue with the game is the constant slowdown and framerate issue. why the hell can UMvsC3 that arguably have just as much stuff going on screen can stay smooth while this game can’t. also i think the gameplay is solid but nothing amazing or anything like that. i still prefer Shadow Over Mystara.

          • buddyluv324

While I understand you points to some extend, you’re forgetting that Dragons Crown has the esrb rating of “T” for teen. With the rating its received you should know by playing the game that the most you’ll see is some suggestive imagery and some partial nudity. Comparing the mild content of DC to full on nude porn or hentai is a poor comparison at that because the context is lacking to back up your claims. Weather or not you can play such titles with certain content like partial nudity or suggestive themes is subjective and is entirely up to the player him/herself. Also as for you comparing it to UMvC3 is another poor comparison you’re making. UMvC3 is obviously a 2d fighting game with 3d character and background models to where as DC is mostly hand drawn sprites in 2d. There’s quite a bit of stuff going on, with UMvC3, but theres also some corners cut to make the gameplay smooth ( like the 3d character models themselves for example that lack a bit of detail). Plus the most models you see on screen at once is about 3-4 different models. As for DC being that its is 2d there’s even alot more going on screen at once which would explain some of the minor slowdown (unless you’re on the vita version its more noticeable to a certain point). While I also enjoy and still occasionally play the D&D games, while D&D still holds up in gameplay a bit, DC vastly improves upon its mechanics and features, making DC more than a worthy successor to D&D.

          • Arz

context? they admit that they put all that stuff to stand out in the market. that’s just cheap attempt to gain attention,(which all sexual fanservice are). also I didn’t know 2d sprites requires more power. But that’s their design fault. if they wanted to put hand drawn sprites they should be aware of the consequences. either make it right or you don’t. UMvsc3 obviously have washed down graphics but they’re still pretty darn good and other than online,i had never have slowdown with it.

          • buddyluv324

You sound as if you didnt know what you were getting into despite whats been put out even before the game’s release. Given the fact that DC is a Vanillaware game ( with other titles under their belt that display such fanservice btw) and that its published by Atlus with a “T” esrb rating, one would think to expect certain content. You had to have known before you purchased the game that there would be some level of fanservice. If such fanservice isnt to your liking then im afraid its your own fault displaying such ignorance about the game beforehand and in the future dont play games that have a “T” rating or higher. And yes Vanillaware did say they wanted their work to stand out, but also took in alot of inspiration from various sources while adding their own style with it and it didnt limit to just the characters either. If they just copy and pasted what was already out in the market, then they cant really call it art. Again you’re comparing apples and oranges with DC and UMvC3. Two completely different games with different artstyles and game engines. If you’re going to compare it to anything at least pick the D&D games or Castle Crashers.

      • Arz

I have the game, don’t worry.

        • Herok♞

you have the game and you still say its selling because of the sex appeal because? its a great game which is why it sold

    • buddyluv324

Lol! And i bet be you believe that the Sorceress panders to lolicon too? Try harder next time, Jason Schreier.

  • RovCal

o my precious ff9 so glad to see u on top. but at the same time disappointed to not see 8 in the list.

  • MaximDualBlade

Still playing it to date XD It’s perfect to pick up whenever you don’t have anything else to play or simply you feel the urge to play something and spend 10 hours each time you pick it up. And I have yet to play as the sorcereress, the wizard, the dwarf and the knight. A game deserving it’s popularity and the controversy helped it :D

  • Kornelious

Hooray for Dragons Crown! Oh and Dark Arisen got #10 in the PS3 section……well at least it made the chart.

    • FlyingPony

I really like Dragon Dogma concept, the ability to climb the terrain and gigantic monsters make the game really enjoyable. Climb the castle ruin while gawking the scenery from the top, or hanging on a flying griffin. Stab a 10 foot tall Cyclops in its eye. So enjoyable, and add a new dimension toward the gameplay.

Games like Skyrim, Darksouls, Dragon Age — the other action adventure genre out there — could use the climbing mechanic as well, make it more fun and make the character wont look stupid, cannot move forward because one brick blocking is on the way.

Dragon Dogma also have the most awesome magic (tornado, earthquake, summon meteor) and most versatile bowing mechanic I’ve ever seen in a game. Able to zoom for sniping, can bowing multiple arrows at once, do a raining arrows, it have many types of arrows (blast, oil, poison. OHKO arrow).

It Capcom can polish its combat to be weighty, more calculated and need strategy like Darksouls, and able to pull a more larger and versatile vast landscape like Skyrim, fixing the characters/creatures animation as well, give it a more solid story, little background and character development for the more important characters, the game will be a beast.

      • Kornelious

You sir, deserve a promotion. Same exact thoughts over here :)

This game can do soooo much better if they really put some more work into it. Heck it could even top skyrim!

  • buddyluv324

I just reached 200 hours clocked on this game and gotten platinum! Only 9963 more floors to go >D

  • ElAbuelo69

I love the game AND the sorceress’s huge melons.

    There, I said it.

    Sue me :P

  • Göran Isacson

Final Fantasy IX. Oh yeah. Accept no substitutes.

  • hazelnut1112

Glad to see this game is still selling really well, plus seeing Skullgirls doing well in Japan is another surprise.

  • Frimelda

Thoroughly deserved and MY GOTY! Seriously….I was almost at the brink of giving up gaming altogether as nothing has quite piqued my interest, but this game comes out and wow….amazing, amazing, AMAZING! :D
