Square Enix Is Teasing Something… With A Social Games Developer

By Eugene . January 2, 2014 . 1:00pm

Square Enix has launched a teaser site for a mysterious new game in conjunction with social mobile games developer Gloops.

The news will come on the 8th of January, but what could it be?! Keen-eyed folks might have noticed that the url for the teaser site says “Destiny VIII” or “Destiny 8”. And that background does look vaguely… Final Fantasy-ish. But then, Square have always used nice promo art for their mobile games.

Guess we’ll find out more about this mysterious game come January 8.

    A mobile-like game for consoles?

    • d19xx

Meanwhile on mobiles “a console-like game for mobiles”…

      • makubexnas

damn, i want to play dragon quest 8 port on my android phone lol.

    • Rohan Kishibe

It must be that previously announced Chaos Rings Sigma since that’s gonna be a social game. Maybe we’ll get a release date on the 8th. The logo in the back is very Chaos Rings-y.

  • Yan Zhao

    “With a social game developer”

Well, theres not much to “teaser” then, is there?

    • Samsara09

well, they can tease us,like they always do.

  • Pythia Brixham

You know, I WANT social games to be good, I WANT to be excited about announcements like these, I can see some possible potential in them… I just never really see any of that potential being used.

    • wererat42

I want them to be good too.
Then I remember All the Bravest.

  • Theob Vious Choice

Cards, Puzzles, Strategy RPGs and bishoujo (probably idols or goddesses)
There, you have every Japanese mobile game ever.

Puzzles featuring annoying characters and annoying noises or real-time world building games.
There, you have every U.S. made mobile game ever.

It’s like playing a watered down portable pseudo-social online game.

But don’t forget that the only way anyone can get to top-tier is by spending cash on absolutely nothing.

  • xe7en

Was exciting until… second half of the title was revealed :|

  • Kotorin

    More games for gajumals :/

  • Ty Austin

Aaaand just like that, my interest is gone.

  • J_Joestar

ya’know, i want to have an angry, rage-filled reaction to this new.

but it is just so not-surprising that all i can do is go “meh…” now to mention of SE and socal/phone stuff…

  • Rohan Kishibe

It must be that previously announced Chaos Rings Sigma since that’s gonna be a social game. Maybe we’ll get a release date on the 8th.

  • Tatsuya Fabre

You know, I’m not even angry any more. This is getting hilarious watching SE screw around with all this smartphone crap.

  • saxophone15

I don’t know why there would be any reason to be angry. So what if it’s a mobile game? Does every game SE announces have to be a game you want to play?

Maybe I’m just a more laid back person, but this type of stuff never bothers me.

    • MaximDualBlade

The main issue is that from my non japanese or asian (the demographic for these games) lifestyle, I expect a video game teaser site to be opened for games on consoles or on the pc, but not for a mobile game.

Also anyone who complains in the comments, (which I haven’t read) either doesn’t know this company and it’s teaser sites, or is asking to be dissapointed.

And indeed if you know the above, this shouldn’t bother you, which I find is the most appropiate answer

    • Samsara09

Well,it didn’t bother me for years…and I ignored the complaints, for the same reasons you say.You are indeed correct.

But well, the amount of announcements for mobile is staggering…and what about consoles/handhelds?Diminishing.

And well, you have things like making tease pages for IoS ports of DS or other handheld consoles, when the fans want sequels or remakes for 3DS or other handheld consoles… and when they talk about how fan feedback determines how they will make a game, and that if a IoS game is good they will port it to handhelds, with a 40 dollars price ,even if it is as complex as candy crusher or such…,plus the communications issues and little lies they tell us…

People have the right to get angry and complain.Although majority of the comments in the web and on this page abuse of this right….

      • saxophone15

I can easily see being disappointed because it’s not what people expected, but to be angry? To me, a teaser for anything with a planned release is simple marketing. People who want teasers for mobile games to stop is like asking to not give the product marketing. Perhaps some people feel mobile games are not worthy of teasers or marketing…but I feel that isn’t a fair ideal.

        • Samsara09

I agree with you,for this tease wasn’t directed at us.But that itself can offend the fans…

Was gonna give you an honest and educated response about it but a moderator here got mad that I made a long text and decided to butch it…I mean, read it.Could you please wait for him to read it?Oops, guess he doesn’t appreciate long, honest and detailed posts.I don’t think he is used to reading a good text. Can’t blame him, just look at this comment section.I am not seeing it anywhere, though.Oh well, will just have to do it short.

Long story short, the console and handheld fans are feeling orphaned by SE,like an elder brother who is not receiving any attention from his parents, who are only giving it to the little brother, the mobile fans.Well,it is a petty and exaggerated conflict,we might say…but SE not talking to us is just adding fuel to the fire.Quite a mess.Hope this ends well…Did my post help you?

          • CirocaFlocka

I used to be a big fan of square’s and I kind of view everyone’s action’s as the 5 stages of grief. But I view them now the same way I view nintendo. “Hey if you don’t want money then keep on making games like this”

          • Samsara09

            perhaps.

      • GDI

It used to be that we were bothered when new Japanese games were only for handheld devices (DS and PSP) and not for consoles.

Now we are bothered when new Japanese games are only for smartphone/social (wifi always on to just launch) and not for handhelds (I have finally bought handhelds just for Japanese games I missed out on.)

        • Samsara09

The world ends with you and bravely default are SE’s ace series for DS/3DS.
SE already gave green to the bravely default series…why the hell can’t they do it for the world ends with you and revive it on the 3ds…their handheld games are awesome, see.

    • Minos

People are mad because they see the future and truth on SQ current situation, but, they don’t want to admit it.

So, anger is the most basic instint.

      • GDI

Well I’m currently stockpiling the few remaining Japanese console games for 3DS and Vita. I know these — plus the PS3 games to be released this year and next, are among the last non F2P games which I can fully enjoy without worrying when I’ll be bumping into a paywall or else needing constant wifi connection just to launch the thing.

I’m supposed to “outgrow” videogames anyway so what better time then when all games transition to mobile/social network format which ironically casual middle-aged people (the ones who belittled us for playing hardcore games) like to patronize.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

The future that they are producing moblie games like they always have for a market that has been strong in japan for years now?

    • Heisst

” Does every game SE announces have to be a game you want to play?”
Other way around, all or nearly all of these teasers that happen so often are for something mobile/browser related.

      • saxophone15

I’m sure it has to do with the fact that these games can be developed faster.

If Square-Enix was the only game company in existence, I could see this being a major problem for people…but with so many good games coming out from various developers, things like this just seem like such a small and insignificant thing to make a big deal about.

        • Heisst

Are people not allowed to complain that a company is ebbing away from their fanbase and focusing on mobile rather than more core-focused systems?

Why is every teaser something for mobile rather than something others can be hyped about?

          • saxophone15

I’ve never said anything about people not allowed to complain…I was only expressing my opinion on the situation, just as you are now.

I don’t believe SE is going to abandon core games. Mobile games are simply another branch of what they do. I’m sure they will continue to make Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, others like Bravely Default and so on until the end of the company (in addition to published games from their western-owned studios).

As I’ve said before, teasers for mobile games don’t bother me. SE isn’t the only company in the world I look towards for my games, there are plenty other games around to enjoy in-between the major SE releases I care about. I think people would be happier if they just let go and enjoy the games they like as they come.

          • Heisst

People are going to complain regardless of there being a billion other companies or not, like, what kind of logic is that? Should I not get angry about my restaurant serving me garbage since ”there’s a lot of other restaurants that serve better food”?

And SE already said themselves twice that they’re going to focus on mobile AND they’re showing it by having every single teaser site be about mobile games.
            http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/13/square-enix-to-focus-on-smartphone-games-as-part-of-future-strategy/

          • saxophone15

Your analogy doesn’t work. For example, you know you don’t want to play a mobile game, so you don’t get it. Why would you go to a restaurant and knowingly order something you don’t want? In that situation, it’s not the restaurant’s fault you ordered it.

When I go to a restaurant, I order what I know I like or what I think I would like and avoid what I think I wouldn’t like. If a restaurant doesn’t have anything that I like, I simply find and go to another one that does…not a big deal at all.

SE are going to put more resources into mobile, but it isn’t going to be the sole focus. A more recent article shows that.
            http://www.siliconera.com/2013/11/11/square-enix-continue-developing-aaa-titles-says-ceo/

Even in the article you linked to. It lists 3 main strategies. Take a look at the first one…”Overhaul large-scale, long-term development”. What do you think they’re talking about here? Certainly not mobile games…they are talking about their AAA production.

          • Heisst

”Why would you go to a restaurant and knowingly order something you don’t want?”
But said restaurant offered what I wanted all the time and suddenly it’s removing all my favourite toppings. That’s why the restaurant is getting so much flak, it’s forgetting its old audience and people WANT that restaurant to come back to support said audience and not just ignore it and pretend there’s no problem.

The problem is that they have a new focus, mobile, when their focus should be their core audience, and it’s already showing, what with all these teaser sites being solely for mobile/browser and dissappointing its fans? Their AAA development is nowhere near as notable anymore and most of it is western games that were never Squeenix-like like Tomb Raider and Hitman Absolution.

          • saxophone15

So then just move on, like how people move on from past relationships. You’ll find someone new and they will find someone else.

Audiences and fans can change over time. There’s no rule saying they have to cater to the same audience forever.

Anyways, I believe I’ve made my point so I’ll just stop here…otherwise we’ll both just be repeating the same things over and over again.

          • Heisst

            ”So then just move on”
Why? Why can’t I attack the company for forgetting its fans and starting to focus on mobiles? This isn’t like you say at all, this is something people’s inputs can have an actual effect in the form of feedback. I want Square to be good again.

  • JustThisOne

Hmm… It looks like a planet… being tickled by giant demon hands.

    • Zero_Destiny

Move over Katamari, there’s a new kid on the block now.

  • Mirin

Social gaming seems like a pointless exercise to me. I would much rather developers innovate and push the boundaries of their console online play features rather than try to work with an entirely different form of social interaction altogether. Game Freak did a great job of making online play seamless, continual and addictive without feeling intrusive on Pokemon X and Y, more developers could learn from this. Essentially there is no such thing as ‘social gaming’ in this context anyway, just games tacked on to social-by-design platforms such as social networking sites and mobile technologies.

  • Samsara09

Dear Square,I know that you are a business, that the social games is a growing market, just like IoS,and that you need quick profit…and that making kingdom hearts or final fantasy takes too long and use to much assets and resources

but it doesn’t excuse you from forsaking us,who have been together with you ever since you were Square Soft, buying the rpgs you made then or/and have made since you merged with Enix. You could make,I don’t know, more handheld games like a remake for TWEWY…and a sequel, for instance,on the 3DS…or do something for the vita.

Hell,Namco Bandai has the tales of series and Atlus has the shin megami tensei/Persona…and they, for exemple, haven’t sacrificed making console games like SE has,nor prioritizing those social/smarphone ones.I think that the money SE is making isn’t worth alienating their long time fans.Oh well,we still need to see until where they will keep this up…for SE will someday need to open up with the fans.

  • hazelnut1112

Just reading social or mobile next to the word game already means it’s going to be a disaster.

  • Minos

I suppoce they realiced how the only thing they were doing with these teaser was pissing people off, so this time they are being honest.

Anyways, I am not sure if count SQ as a victim of the past gen or a future one of the current one, I mean, it was the past Gen the one hat poisoned it, but it will be this one the one that gives it the “Finish Strike”…

    • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t think they pay attention western audience when they do these things

  • KnifeAndFork

At least know not to get my hopes up now….

    • Samsara09

yeah. They once announced a tease page about the “world ends with you”…a game for DS directed by nomura…people were hyped because of the hints SE itself gave and because the caracters of that game made a crossover in kingdom hearts:Dream Drop DIstance….

Imagine the fans’s surprise when it was revealed the page was for a IoS port…that no one,not even the IoS fans requested or were aware of.Lol,”Fan demand”,right. Many got mad with SE,since that little charade-the tease page- was kept on for a week or two.At least, now, they announced from the get go it was a mobile game. They learned their lesson

  • pixxxelz

    Final Fantasy Crush Saga.

  • DesmaX

Do people really get hyped for this kinda stuff?

I would assume that the main market for these kinda games would just look at the new app releases for their phone and check said game out because it looks interessing. But hey, I don’t have a clue about the japanese market, so whatever

    • equalequation

They don’t, not really. Japanese webboards are complaining as much as we are. And I don’t mean 2ch. It doesn’t really get much attention on twitter, either.

      • epy

Yet they sell, which is why they keep on doing it. I also wonder who buys these games, especially S-E’s since they’re way more expensive than most. It’s definitely not their core audience (although who knows what SE considers their core audience nowadays) and casuals are unlikely to pay 10 bucks or more for a mobile game.

        • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Probably cause they get a higher return on something like a smartphone game. Having a lower development cost and time means they don’t have to hit nearly as high for it to be considered profitable.

So their mobile games might actually be successful in terms of what’s on paper. People complain about it, but as long as there’s people willing to pay the money, it might not be too lofty a goal for SE to recoup on their costs.

    • almostautumn

Mobile is the biggest gaming platform in Japan. It’s not to say there aren’t a large assortment who share western views that dedicated platforms express the most dedicated experience, but all the same mobile has been really keenly met in Japan and is going to continue to grow, for better or worse.
Personally, I wouldn’t have an issue with mobile if there was just ONE device that ruled them all. But as it is, you literally need to pay a $300-annual hardware update just to keep up with the games. It’s so silly, and while business’ are doing a delightful jig about this I really can’t comprehend why consumers are so willing to support a structure that is blatantly bleeding their wallets.

      • Michael Cortorreal

Finally…someone who shares my point of view!

    • Mnstrzero00

I honestly wish they would bring some of these games to America. Smartphones are expensice and I would like to be able to play some atleast okay games on it. The android market is bone dry if you’re into Japanese games. If this was a NA release I would be excited.

  • AuraGuyChris

It’ll be a huge surprise once it’s revealed it’s not a social game but a full console game.

      • Samsara09

well, people are just waiting to bash it.I wouldn’t worry if it is actually good or no.The former is of course the most probable scenario…after all the trouble this game is giving them…and those years they dedicated.

FFVIII sequel…for mobile, that would be kind of a horror for the real hardcore fans of VIII XD

        • ShindoW

No. Don’t ruin my favorite FF by squeezing some crappy sequel onto mobile.

          • Ric Vazquez

I know that feel bro, all to well, let’s cross our fingers and hope it does not come to that.

    • Samsara09

So,just because he has written the story/scenario for a game everyone already hates without even seeing a trailer or photos…or even an announcement….that means all the good work he did is already forgotten?lol, gratitude.

Anyone could read it as “Square Enix has launched a teaser site for a mysterious new game in conjunction with Gloops, a developer that specializes in social games. Even though Gloops has only worked in mobile games, one could hope Square Enix could work together with them on the consoles, but due to SE’s recent track record of mobile games it does not look likely.”

I would like to see more iOS games that are integrated into main games. For example: a chocobo game that let’s you raise a chocobo from an egg which you can then use in FFXIV: ARR. It is optional, it can act as a stand alone game, and it is beneficial to your FFXIV game.

FFVIII had something similar with a pocket station game which from my understanding (I’ve never played it) was not integral to finishing the game, but was a nice augmentation to the gaming experience.

    tl;dr
I would like to see iOS games that are integrated into platform games which add a non-integral but useful benefit to the game.

  • http://www.sevex.org Steven

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a company try to sell-out so hard. Square Enix had such a great pedigree, but now they seem to be more focused on grabbing for cash in the mobile space and becoming a publisher for Eidos games in the console space.

At least we know this now instead of after the announcement and we’re disappointed because we thought it may be something to get hyped for.
