Finally! A Swimsuit That Actually Does Something Other Than Look Pretty

By Eugene . January 5, 2014 . 12:30pm

While we’re all very used to the idea of seeing gratuitous swimsuit usage, it’s always with a sigh of relief when we get to see the occasional times it’s actually got a use other than for fanservice. Like these One Piece Unlimited World: Red DLC costumes.

Sure, Robin and Nami look great in them, but they also confer special stats when worn, which actually make sense… kind of. Wearing them confers a 50% reduction to water damage, but since they’re prancing about in their swim gear, also lowers overall hit points by 15%. Who wears armored swimsuits anyway, right? And Chopper looks so adorable with his float!

The costumes all cost 400 yen each  ($4) and are available now, with each conferring different benefits. The school girl wear for instance lets both the lovely lasses get 10% SP recovery rate on their attacks, while Zoro, being the badass that he is, deals 20% more damage to, quite literally “the small fry”. He slices, he dices, and he looks swag.

To be honest, I very much prefer costumes and stats to be separate in just about all games. It’s a pain to have to lose a look that you particularly like for the sake of being effective .

    • deadMastershiro

I actually like the idea of increasing stats by putting on a pair of boxers but i get what you mean. Too bad they don’t have a vanity slot like on bravely default.

      • DaiRaiOh

I’d rather them (And everyone else) do things like DC Universe Online does. When you get equipment, you get a purely cosmetic style part from it that is the look of the equipment, and you also get the stats. If you don’t want to change your look, you just lock your outfit so you only get stats, but still permanently unlock that style part for future use. It’s pretty much the perfect way of doing equipment in a way that satisfies nearly everybody.

    • Alberto Maytorena

The only game I’ve ever played that subverts that is DC Universe Online, where sure, you get new more effective costumes as you level up, but the game gives you the chance to change clothes and keep the stats as long as the piece of costume is equiped.

    • Reminds me of Uncharted 3s “hat stats” I’d rather not look ridiculous to gain an advantage, thank you very much.

    • Ryuki

This, LaTale comes to mind. You have some of these amazing and cool looking outfits yet they offer no stats while these ugly and crappy looking costumes do. I wish that they would do what trickster did. Just get an item you like and an item with the stats you want, combine the stats onto the weapon and viola! You have the costume you want with the stats of the other item.

    • Hinataharem

P4 Golden did it perfectly, where costumes and armor were two different slots.

    • Abysswalker90

Or make the costumes balance out, so you always gain something from wearing each one.

  • Zoro looks hot.

Also, stats? No one cares. We care for the costumes. It’s just aesthetics, yeah, but that’s the point of alternate costumes.

    • Nanaki

      Dem abs.

  • subsamuel01

I wish they release this game In North America like they are with Romance Dawn, game looks amazing.

Great censoring Siliconera. You’re not allowed to critizise your staff? Or aren’t you allowed to critizise feminism?

    • Zero_Destiny

We didn’t need an off-topic comment like that.

      • Life and hometown

Don’t try to label critizism at you as “off topic”. It was perfectly on topic and addressed how you wrote the article.

        • Zero_Destiny

Criticism is just fine. But personal attacks are another thing, buddy. If you have a point to make, stay cool and calm, and don’t be an ass.

          • Life and hometown

There’s a very fine line between “personal attacks” and plain critizism. Should I send the critisism on a silver plate next time with dessert?

          • Zero_Destiny

Just use your common sense. It’s actually not that hard.

    • Lloyd Christmas

You made a pretty good point with your earlier comment. Dunno why it was removed.

      • Lalum

        What did he say?

        • Namuro

Hmm, I wonder about that too.

Actually…I’d rather not. I have enough headache seeing how he couldn’t even spell “criticism”…

          • Lalum

I don’t really want to devalue his entire argument because he misspelled a word. I haven’t seen his argument.

    • Minos

Of course you are not allowed.

      All hail the Uterus!

  • Lifestreamer

    Let’s see:
Zoro’s costume is from chapter 507 color spread (one of my favorites), Nami and Robin’s swinsuits are from chapter 634 color spread, Nami and Robin’s school outfits comes from “Mugiwara Theatre – Red-Hair of Class 3 – Sea Time” omake, and lastly, pts Chopper with a float is from a promotional color artwork for a train event thing in Japan from a few years back.

And I like the special stats, it give the costumes more purpose.

  • malek86

Even if it’s a 50% damage reduction, for just a single element, it doesn’t seem worth losing 15% of your total HP, unless that element is very dominant among enemy attacks.

Then again, I’m reasoning in RPG terms.

    • British_Otaku

The water element is fairly rare in the game, you will most frequently be hit by it in the Hody Jones and Akainu (as he can melt ice in the background which you can use against him) fights aside from falling into the sea. Devil fruit users have the extra problem of losing more health in water and getting dizzy from just a mass of water.

It is reasonable to call this a ripoff both as far as practical use (though I want these just to have something else to look at) and as far as paying stupid amounts for just costumes.

    • Romancer Ecclesia

dammit you beat me to it rofl!

  • Zeongundam

I don’t mind when it comes to armor or costumes with stats. If a game like say God Eater wants to allow players to dress up without stat restraints fine. And others like this which give stats and bonuses are just as well, I just can’t stand if something (Usually helmets but much less in the current gen) are ugly but give great benefits.

    • Mr_SP

*sigh* I remember a time when swimsuits both conferred additional TP gain, and didn’t cost $5 per person. If anything, it’s the latter which is frustrating. $5 a head!? How much do they expect people to pay?

      • Hound

I remember that time. It was very common for re-releases or ports of games to include most additional content.

Even after a sequel was released, you never knew when they’d make a port.. or international version *shudder*
Oh wait.. it still happens. And it comes with DLC =/

  • TheGameTagerZ

    Tempted to buy this….

    • British_Otaku

Have you looked into any of the other DLC, mate?

If not, they are all overpriced and/or separated in crazy ways to guarantee money or whatever deals Namco Bandai wanted… Just to get everything we know about now, you need to buy a bunch of stuff from the download store on the game, buy the VJump Strategy Guide for a code, get the exclusive code from both of the two 3DS Limited Editions, get a code from buying the game at GEO, get a code from buying the game at Yamada Denki and finally go through some gimmicky smartphone stuff to get Christmas Chopper which was a timelocked free DLC which ended in December last year.

I can’t bring myself to buy any of it knowing that they were nicer with their fanservice before (even with the Episodes split for UC), knowing that there could be a remake or recollection and knowing that there isn’t a chance I can have everything.

      • TheGameTagerZ

I had the free Luffy Strong World DLC and the Ace DLC for free. But the rest is too much. That sounds like I’m spending $30 already. But I’ll see.

  • British_Otaku

Not that I approve of any of the DLC in this game, but it is worth noting that most of the “costume DLC” comes with a free quest as well. Three of the four above, excluding the Chopper costume come with at least one.

  • You forgot to mention that they get a 20% movement speed boost while wearing swimwear, which is more desirable and makes even more sense than a mere water resistence buff. Less clothes = easier movement.

  • Cyo

I’d be in it for the swimsuit only, who cares if it has stats lol

  • Slayven19

Man robin looks hot in her swimsuit but especially in her school uniform costume. I really like hoisery so that puts the costume at a 10/10 for me, nami looks pretty good in hers to.

To bad this is a 3ds game as we sure aren’t going to get it. Well maybe we won’t anyway but there’s a chance for europe to get it maybe.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Nami and Robin in their schoolgirl outfits remind me of t.A.T.u if you switch their hair colors.

  • Robin looks so hot

  • ElGatoSerio

    ROBIN CHWAN!!!!!
