It’s Time For The Bad Guys To Shine In Rurouni Kenshin

Recently, novelist Kaworu Kurosaki, who is also the wife of Rurouni Kenshin mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki, was in attendance at a panel at Otakon in Las Vegas.

There, Kurosaki there revealed that her husband is currently working on a brand new spin-off  Kenshin manga that will be from the perspective of some of Kenshin’s greatest foes.

Kurosaki asked members in the audience to provide their suggestions on this front, promising to pass them on to Watsuki, and it appears that the two most requested characters were Enishi Yukishiro and Shishio’s fiancée, Yumi.

Hmm… considering we do have Shishio showing up in movie theatres this year for the Kenshin live-action movie, it might be the perfect time indeed for her to be featured in this new manga.

If you can’t wait that long, though, Kenshin is a playable character in J-Stars Victory Vs., which looks set to be as close to the ultimate “What if” beatdown battle as we’re going to get. If you think Kenshin will beat Kurosaki “I’m EVERYTHING” Ichigo from Bleach that is.

    Ohohoho, I like this idea.
I also like bad guys. Like, truly evil bad guys. None of that “his/his views were just different” or sympathizing with their ideals stuff. We need more evil dudes (that should be the name of a game someday… maybe).
    And to have your waifu write & work with you ;_;

    • malek86

Many of the bad guys in Kenshin, especially in the Shishio arc, were about as sympathetic as the good guys.

I wouldn’t mind seeing more from Yumi’s perspective. I wonder if the movie will focus on her a bit more than the manga.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

        I know… I sorta realized that after I posted my comment :x
Just being “evil” probably isn’t very interesting to begin with too.
I haven’t seen the 1st live action Kenshin movie, seems like many like it.

        • malek86

I found it pretty boring, but that’s just me.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Well, it’s always good to hear different opinions about it. Might bring it up again when I see it ;)

          • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

I thought it was surprisingly decent (better than the New Kyoto Arc OVA, at any rate) but then I did go in with rock-bottom expectations.

    • Lightthrower

Super evil dudes? Luca Blight from Suikoden 2 :-D

I’ll take what I can get! I would rather have him continue the story with Yahiko the Master and Kenji in tow. Where the later meet up with a older wanderer Sojiro fighting new enemies, and the change of the era. Where guns now are the weapon of choice. Would be a great story!

  • z_merquise

If you think Kenshin will beat Kurosaki “I’m EVERYTHING” Ichigo from Bleach that is.

    Of course he can!

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

Aren’t these supposed to be unbiased, though?

    • Shippoyasha

I honestly don’t remember when Ichigo from Bleach was cocky anymore. He is almost too dour and downright self effacing now. Plus, power-level wise, he’s almost unbeatable at his highest potential. He’s gone full Yusuke Urameshi Demon path.

Some shonen fighting characters are just crazily overpowered. I guess Luffy vs Kenshin would be a fairer fight.

  • konsama

Well most, if not all the Ruroken had some good back stories, having more insight of them will be really awesome, i mean, if there’s special chapters of mangas where all they do is being on “pool or spring break”, why not add more value to the beloved villains of ruroken.

  • Altin

    OHHH YEAH!

  • KyoyaHibari

    >Kurosaki “I’M EVERYTHING” Ichigo
Nice one Eugene ;). Anyways, this sounds like a decent idea, but can we just have a modern anime remake with some slight story adjustments and the Jinchu arc finally adapted? ~.~ I know we shouldn’t be asking the manga writers, but still I’d really want it to happen.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

Maybe we’ll see what happens to Soujiro after the Kyoto arc or if Anji decides to do something with his life.

    • darkbartz

I would love more Soujiro too. He just started on a journey of his own ala Kenshin, so it would be nice to see how he would grow from it. Also, cause super-speed attacks are cool.

  • MaximDualBlade

An anime adaptation of the Jinchu arc would be amazing too, but that is a little off subject XD

Yumi would be an interesting character to explore, Enishi too of course, but this manga had so many interesting characters. that just one is not enough.

I also wish for it to be gory, I want deaths without hesitation and good battles with good drama and if possible to put some focus on historical stuff of the Bakumatsu(assuming it’s before the Meiji era) with anime exagerations of course, because in real life duels end much quicker XD

  • Aoshi00

Hm.. I’m still waiting for a faithful anime adaptation of Jinchuu in Watsuki-style, just like how excellently done the Hunter remake is..

As much as I love Watsuki and all his works, RK, Gun Blaze West, Busou Renkin, and now Embalming.. and the new 2-volume parallel universe RK.. I wish he would not waste time w/ more RK spin-offs.. I’m anxious to read the rest of Embalming, it was put on hiatus for a while.. the RK revival has been lukewarm and disappointing at best, 2 awful PSP games and horrible OVAs, the new manga was pretty good and the live action movie was actually surprisingly good..

Still, RK has ended, pls continue to draw more Embalming.. I would like to see RK in the form a decent fighting game like Persona 4 Arena.. also looking forward to the 2nd movie as well..

    • Chido55

      Embalming, YES.
Shit stopped so sudden and so long. I want more of it.
Wish he continued on Busou Renkin too, I love it but too short.

      • Aoshi00

I was so glad the spin-off was finally done, while it’s cool it was unnecessary.. I think Watsuki should better concentrate on continuing Embalming instead of drawing more Kenshin spin off or parallel universe again. Yeah, Busou Renkin ended a bit abruptly at the end, but it had a good run, 10 volumes wasn’t too shabby, it even got an extended ending after ended in Shounen Jump. The anime was good too. I wish we could see a real Jinchuu anime or even a Gun Blaze West anime :)

        • Chido55

Idk really, but I feel like it flies by fast when I read Busou Renkin. WHAM, lol already reached the end XD

          GBW never finished, no?

          • Aoshi00

I was following Busou Renkin from Shounen Jump and tankoubon during its run at the time, so it was a pretty good 2 years for me.. it did come to an abrupt ending but was allowed two more long chapters afterwards..

yeah, GBW got axed, the first volume started out strong but was pretty unfocused later and fizzled out, it was an experiment and very different style for Watsuki.. I would still like to see it animated in some form lol.. still faithful Jinchuu anime or a good remake like Hunter x Hunter would be a dream come true.. let Madhouse handle it..

But man, I just want him to continue Embalming, it being a monthly serial instead of weekly was slow as it is, and now I don’t want him to keep doing more RK spinoffs, just let it rest.. it’s cool to see him draw RK again w/ a different art style after sto long, but parallel universe is just unnecessary.. Vol 7 was out in Sep 2012..

  • luckgandor

    More Kenshin is always welcome.

The world needs more from The Battosai’s history!

    • Ric Vazquez

My most sincere applause to you

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Wish Watsuki would quit with the spinoffs and do either a full-blown remake or a new series that embraces some of the heavier material he shied away from at a few critical points in “Kenshin”. The series had a lot of really strong ideas that felt constrained by the need to be a Shonen Jump serial. Just look at what Kazuhiro Furuhashi was able to wring out of it with the first OVA series.

That said, if there’s one thing RK did exceptionally well for a shonen manga it was having interesting and sympathetic villains, so this particular spinoff isn’t the worst idea.

  • Michael Connell

How about the misadventures of Gohei and his brother?
Though in all seriousness (though the aforementioned could make a good omake) I’d really like to seea spinoff focusing on Soujiro or Anji. Enishi maybe, but to be honest I kinda like where the manga left him as it is.
