Drakengard 3’s Latest DLC Features Rearranged Songs From Nier

By Sato . January 9, 2014 . 2:40am

Last month, Square Enix released downloadable content for Drakengard 3 featuring costumes for Zero, and they also announced that they would be releasing a story episode in early 2014. While we wait for the episode, they recently released (thanks, Dengeki) additional DLC with more costumes and rearranged tracks from Nier.

The “Nier Rearranged BGM Set” will be going for 200 yen, and it will feature rearranged versions of “Song of the Ancients,” “Emil,” and “Ashes of Dreams” from Nier’s soundtrack. These DLC tracks can be chosen in the stage music option in Drakengard 3.

Below is a look at Zero sporting outfits from Drakengard 2’s Manah and Eris. In addition to looks, the costumes grant small buffs that might come in handy.

Manah’s outfit has an effect of granting 20% extra health when using healing items.

Eris’ costume lets you guard enemy attacks without using up stamina. Both outfits can be purchased for 300 yen each.

Finally, here’s a look at the baby head accessory for Mikhail that might send chills down the spines of those who’ve played the first Drakengard. While Mikhail might not appreciate having this over her head, players can get it for 100 yen in the PlayStation store.

Drakengard 3 will be available in the west sometime in 2014.

That’s good, but we want a story DLC.

  • MaximDualBlade

I like the Grotesqueries head on the dragon

  • Heropon

Whatever , Release E date please

  • surakian

    Haha, natural enemies riding together.

  • David Harris

Does it say if it’s either Emil / Karma or Emil / Sacrifice?

    • Laith Rem

Emil/Karma and Emil/Sacrifice it’s the same song, but in different arrangement so it’s kinda pointless to differentiate it in this case. Same with Song of the Ancients.

      • David Harris

Ah, I didn’t think about that.

Now I’m twice as interested to hear it.

        • boink

it’s already on youtube if you want to listen to it.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

It seems Siliconera misses article of Nier’s costume and Furiae’s costume.
    And oh, Tokyo Tower headgear

  • Aoshi00

There’s also a Tokyo Tower accessory for Mikhail too, I’m not putting a weird baby head on the cute Mikhail lol.. the Drakengard (Furiae) and Nier costumes are cool but a bit expensive at 300 yen each, I’m interested in the rearranged music for Drakengard and Nier, there’s only 3 tracks each, wonder where can you change the BGM.. hope the extra story DLC won’t be more than 600 yen..

  • Guest

Rearranged songs from Nier? Should have left them as they were as they were perfection.

    • Mar Mar

Dat epic final boss theme is still stuck in my head.

      Kaine theme too

    • 愛憎

If people did that, then the Tribute album wouldn’t exist, and that would be a crime!

Man this is really good. It’s my first time hearing it and thanks for the link

        • 愛憎

Of course! I’m glad you like it.

  • megaten666

    Nier.
I still angry for replacing the character with an old geezer. That was an unnecessary D-head move to please the “God of War people” >:(

    • Cephrien

I agree it was a weird move, but Papa Nier actually ended up being a fantastic replacement.

    • GodLikesSnacks

One of the reasons I didn’t bought that game.

      • BizarreJelly

You missed out on a fantastic game, your loss.

        • brostar

It’s not really a fantastic game. Gameplay wise it’s very average and actually a little bit too easy if you just spam magic on everything. Story-wise it’s unique and interesting. Though the fact that they learned to hard on the “friendship is powah” trope halfway through did annoy me a fair bit.

          • Rayhan PromisedGallery

at least the NAKAMA POWAAA in NieR is mostly just talk to bring positive atmosphere. There’s no DEUS EX MACHINA OVER 9000 POWER UP THAT MAGICALLY ONE-SHOT ENEMY AND WE LIVE HAPPILY EVE AFTAA like in majority of anime.

A “mature” story doesn’t mean it needs to be super serious emo without any friendship speech imo.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I think a middle-aged father is a much more unique protagonist than a standard young prettyboy.

Not saying I hate young prettyboys, but it’s cool to switch the formula up now and again. How many games can you name where you play as a middle-aged father? I can think of maybe 3-4. And Nier wasn’t anything like Kratos, he was a loving father who happened to be a competent swordsman.

      • megaten666

It’s the mentality behind the move. Why? … Just why? It was some kind of censorship, but why? It is a japanese game, and as such, you should’ve kinda expect that your main protagonist will be a young boy. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Changing something for a localization just for the sake of changing is… stupid. They wanted to make it more mature-ish. What, the original story wasn’t dark and f**ked up enough for them?

        Well, bottom line:
Nier is a fantastic game, but I hate every kind of censorship and regional changes. If they want something localized, then localize the game the way it meant to be played. That’s my opinion.
        /sorry for off-topic

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

You call that censorship? Don’t make me laugh. I’d go so far to say as they were pandering to a Western audience, for reasons that are beyond me, but it certainly wasn’t censorship. Downplaying the incest and paedophilia in Drakengard 1 was censorship.

As I recall, the Japanese 360 version of Nier featured the father character, too.

        • BizarreJelly

Censorship? Please don’t throw around words that have nothing to do with anything. It just makes it look like you’re grasping for an excuse to vent.

Father Nier was the choice for the west as it’s more relatable there than a brother/sister relationship. That is all. I personally found the choice to be superior, father Nier was a great character and it helped further NieR’s uniqueness. It’s pretty sad you’ve ignored the character and just based it on looks. That old geezer was a badass who kept going for his daughter :P

        • Gregor

Localization and translation are two different things.

Brother/sister relationships generally aren’t really felt in the western culture as they are in Japan, so they went with father/daughter to try and guarantee the same weight to the majority of the audience, and that’s the point of a localization. What you want is literal translation.

          • brostar

That’s a bad kind of localization though. I honestly feel insulted as western consumer that the Japanese think I want this. Especially seeing as the consumer group who will buy this game are already familiar with Japanese games. Clearly though they were trying to aim for the GOW crowd instead.

          • Gregor

Nier Gestalt (the father version) was the version for X360 in Japan, a console where GoW doesn’t even exist. They simply chose the more palatable version for the western audience when deciding which to localize, and they are both the original work. Doesn’t seem really that insulting to me.

        • Anime10121

If you hate censorships and changes specifically for a region, hilariously enough, the one you should hate is the JAPANESE Nier, as Papa Nier IS the original Nier, and Yoko Taro’s originally conceived product. Brother Nier was created after the fact because they thought that Japan wouldnt resonate with an older main character.

So funnily enough, Brother Nier is actually the one you should be hating on in this case.

    • fairysun

There were not many games that star a middle age man. Nier is quite a refreshing since we did not have The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite at that time.

      • abysswalker

I haven’t played The Last of Us but while I played Infinite I never felt that “protect my daughter” urge towards Elizabeth.

Maybe it’s because the game is an FPS but I felt the age difference between the two wasn’t that big and the relationship they build as you progress never points you into that direction. If you were to play as Comstock then maybe.

    • Arcana Drill

i actualy prefer something more original that is papa nier than the usual i have to save my sister young protagonist. One is a fresh trope and another is one of the most used tropes of jrpgs.

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

to be frankly papa Nier > bro Nier.

The amount of time we got Brother and sister relationships coming from japan is insanely high. Papa Nier showed to be a really good and fresh character and since he is a “old geezer”, it was awesome to see the Old Geezer wiping the floor in the character development department than 90% of this generation JRPGs MC.
And the God of War crowd would problaby hate Nier since we didn’t play as a stupid, violent and always angry protagonist that only wants to desroy everyhing and that probably is one of the worst characters in video game story.

    • Lynx

They didn’t replace anything. There were two versions released. We just got the one.

    • MaximDualBlade

      *Spoilers*

Old geezer? Clearly you didn’t play the game because he was perfect and it is my favorite game(of course I’m debating with my point of view) on ps3 because they gave us the the father and daughter relationship. I love japanese games but I have grown tired of a cast of teenagers or very young adults. (I know the japanese symbolism of youth and I’m still tired of them)

Some may debate that he wasn’t handsome, but who cares, that’s a very shallow reason to be angry. He was a real hard looking man/father and that was a breeze of very fresh air. It also made more sense in my eyes for his friends to appreciate him more.

The brutality he showed when massacring innocent Shades(The Wolf, the young Shade and the Robot, the babies in the ballroom) was so passionate , killing his old friends(Popola and Devola) and destroying humanity last hope(The Shadowlord) was unimportant of his quest he wanted to save his daughter, his Yohah.

I may add that the music, voice acting and story were stellar IMO

    • MrTyrant

I’m sure there always a brother-little sister relantionship in every japanese media. Some of them are funny, other more perverted and there are the dramatic ones with tragic events. But I was surprise to found out there is a dad and that he is the main character in this game and I was pleased for that. I’m grateful for the developer choice to release that one in the west.

    • megaten666

Opinions differ on this matter, though most of the people actually like this change. Well… I’m not. As I stated before, it’s the mentality of changing something just to change it. I couldn’t care less wether “papa Nier” is better than “brother Nier”. If the original, unedited version has the brother-sister story, then why change it? Why? God of War has heads being ripped off, and tits being showcased, but no… is Nier just too much to handle for the americans or what? What? Why? You only saying which one was better, but I don’t care about that. Do you, every one of you approve such things as regional changes?

Oh my god, this game looks cool. It’s for PS3 and it’s coming next year? COOL!

Coming this year since it’s now 2014.

More versions of Nier songs? I must have them.
I highly recommend the original soundtrack, NieR Tribute Album -echo-, and Piano Collections!

The tribute album has tracks from musicians I really respect: Sexy-Synthesizer, millstones, Räfven, and World’s End Girlfriend (!!!), in particular.

Still as much as I loved Nier’s OST it doesnt hold a candle to the Drakengard 1 OST

why does there are so many downvotes? he only states opinion on music with DIFFERENT style

Opinions aren’t inviolable. If you share it you have to be prepared for people disagree.

  • Ren Yuumei

    Song of the Ancients….

Where do i listen to this or who do i send my money too.

  • Chiupon

Uh, Mikhail is a boy dragon.
Also that goddess of the seal costume looks hella appropriate on Zero.

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

      Dragon race are genderless.

      • Chiupon

Mikhail refers to himself as male and uses male pronouns. Zero also uses male pronouns when referring to Mikhail, in the same tense that Gabriel was referred to as female in One’s novella.

  • artemisthemp

Eris outfit looks very nice on Zero

  • Altumn

I really want this game, but it says 3… Is this game linear? Or is it like Final Fantasy and III has nothing to to with I and II’s story?

    • AokiShizuku

Somewhat linear as the game is done in levels like Drakengard 1. It’s not open world like NieR but the game still has treasure laying around in the levels that you’ll have to have find. As for it’s relevance in the overall plot of the series, Drakengard 3 links in heavily with Drakengard 1 and NieR. Although there are no mentions/links with Drakengard 2 in-game, a lot of the stories released with the 10th Anniversary Edition have info about Drakengard 2 and it’s link with Drakengard 3.

      • Altumn

So would it be wise to play Drakengard 1? Or are the mentions more like easter eggs? And why does it link with Nier? Isn’t that a totally different franchise? Or do you not mean story wise? I have played Nier though and love it.

        • AokiShizuku

NieR is linked in with the Drakengard series. It seems like a spin-off but it’s technically a sequel to Drakengard 1. It had relevance to the Drakengard series before 3, however because of 3, it’s more relevant than ever. As for Drakengard 1, I recommend just reading The Dark Id’s Let’s Play. Drakengard 1 has amazing music, characters and story… But the actual gameplay isn’t too good. Drakengard 1, NieR and 3 are linked closely with each other in terms of story, as in plot elements from previous games are mentioned/explained here. 2 is somewhat hard to describe. Drakengard 2 had a different director while the other games had Yoko Taro as director (Director of the other games). I remember reading somewhere that Taro himself said that he has no interest with 2 but still decided to link it in anyway. 2 is relevant, but not as strongly as the other two games.

          • Altumn

Holy shoot! I thought Nier was a stand alone original game. Who would have thought one of my favorites is linked to something bigger. So why is it called Nier? And thanks for explaining all this to me haha.

          • AokiShizuku

NieR is essentially the name of the main character. (Similar to Link is given a name despite being named by the player)

          • Altumn

Holy cow I did not know all this haha (I read somewhere about the name but didn’t know it was cannon) Um, so If I played Nier, could I play Drakengard 3 the same or would I be more lost with Drakengard 3?

          • AokiShizuku

You’ll go through Drakengard 3 just fine. It’s just there’s an immense amount of background information in Drakengard and NieR’s novels.

  • AokiShizuku

These costumes give buffs? Well I’m definitely purchasing them now. Eris outfit looks great and would be useful for specific Request missions.

If anyone is curious about the rearrangements here you go.

Rearranged Nier songs, the watchers accessory, AND DAT MANAH COSTUME?

    Grotesquerie head accessory.

I don’t know if I want to ALWAYS have this one, or if I NEVER want to have this accessory. It’s that brillinatly disturbing.
