Original Ace Attorney Trilogy Coming To Nintendo 3DS

By Sato . January 21, 2014 . 8:00pm

This week’s Famitsu magazine reports that the first three Ace Attorney games—Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations—will be part of the Ace Attorney 123: Wright Selection for Nintendo 3DS.

According to Famitsu, the first three games will be in stereoscopic 3D, and the Japanese version of the collection will also have the English-language option present. A limited edition version will also be available, which will come with a drama CD.

Additionally, first-print copies will come with a download code to get an extra arranged BGM and an original background image.

Ace Attorney: Wright Selection will be coming out in Japan on April 17 for 3,990 yen on Nintendo 3DS.

  • AokiShizuku

That’s great news considering I missed out on playing Justice for All and Trials & Tribulations. Onto the list this goes.

    • HOW COULD YOU?! ATONE!!! JFA wasn’t that much of a loss, but T&T?

      • AokiShizuku

I am sorry! Please forgive me! orz

        • ShinStar

After finally starting the trilogy earlier last year and taking a break between games, I just finished the 3rd game recently. Let me tell you. You haven’t lived until you’ve played AND beaten the Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban trilogy!

      • Daigure

I could never find a copy of the third game? It’s the best of the trilogy?

        • British_Otaku

Easily the best in the trilogy (the first game is strong competition though) and still my favourite out of all of the games I’ve played.

Not that I have played AAI or AAI2.

      • SMT

Honestly I’d say the 4th case of JFA makes going through the game worth it, plus the second case was actually decent (Tutorial case was bad and the circus case was just awful).

But yeah, T&T is where it’s at. Not a single weak case, and the trilogy’s finale is such a masterpiece, just calling it a “masterpiece” doesn’t do it justice. Not only does it tie up the game’s overarching plot, it manages to tie the entire trilogy together in a satisfying conclusion.

        • Eh, only those two cases were worth something (2-1 and 2-4), but otherwise? The game was mostly filler, that it hurts. Not that fillers are bad, since every game in the series has at least one case that’s pretty much a one-shot thing.

    • Shippoyasha

I wanted to get the second game, but it sold out instantly and places like eBay and Game Stop was selling it at a high premium. Incredibly annoying. Also a shame android doesn’t have the series yet.

Slightly disappointing that they aren’t adding Apollo Justice in there but maybe the game is considered decently new and maybe they might actually build an Apollo series.

  • KnifeAndFork

With the 3DS being backward compatible, not sure there’s a point to this, plus they left out Apollo Justice game.

Also, considering how the West barely got the newest game, I’m questioning if this’ll even be localized.

We’ll thankfully it has an English option so we can just import if not anyway and—oh yeah: region lock…

    • Fox

Having all three games in one cart would be nice. They could also upscale and filter the sprites to make it look better at the 3DS much higher resolution.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      • Redblaze27

They could also use the HD versions of the assets so they simply look nicer, seeing as the 3DS doesn’t do HD.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      You can still import it.

I’ve always owned mutliple handhelds either way.

If you live anywhere outside of japan that’s usually how it goes due to things(particularly if you buy multiple copies of pokemon)
      Now I have an OG 3DS, a 3DS LL(Japanese SMT 4 edition) and I’ll get a 2DS one day.

Here’s one you should invest in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgMcY2PZkVk

      • mikebrand83

Heh, the Mint x White Japanese 3DS LL is the one I have. A nice companion to the Project Mirai games, too.

      • KnifeAndFork

You owned import Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Color, Gameboy Advance, NDS, PSP and Vita handhelds? If so, what was the point in that since they weren’t region locked. Not a fan of wasting money and I don’t see why Ninendo had to make consumers enjoyment more difficult this gen by all of a sudden tacking on pointless region lock to handhelds that previously never had it and was never an issue for devs anyway.

Heck Sony and Microsoft use the fact that they don’t have region lock as an in enticing buyers bonus

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No they dont.( Sony and MS dont use that as enticement)

And I said I bought multiple handhelds to game

on in past generations. One potential reason people do this is so they can trade pokemon with themselves (lonesome blokes)

Devs themselves have to implement region locking for one reason or another

NIntendo’s implemented region lock in their handhelds since the DSi for one reason or another.

  • luckgandor

What a perfect way to get into the series. Hope the west gets a physical release too.

  • benhofb

I am kind of conflicted on this… Only because I just bought the originals for the DS (and still haven’t completed them). But I will almost definitely buy this since, PHOENIX WRIGHT MAN. Plus, having all three games with minimal enhancements on one, convenient, cartridge will definitely be nice. Hope it comes over fairly quickly since the game already has an english option!

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Unfortunately Region locking is for a lot of protection reasons…

You can ask JP Kellams about all the woes of region locking.
It sucks but we have it for good reason.

People are going to be annoyed at how many region locked games that are region locked by the publishers instead of the system in the future no doubt.

Its usually there for the smaller guys.

    • Shippoyasha

Why the downvotes for you? You just raised a valid point.
I was getting amped about importing the game but then I realized I don’t have a Japanese 3DS. Maybe I’m just too used to being excited for consoles that allow for imports readily.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

People dont like what I have to say. Simple as that.

    • KnifeAndFork

The smaller guys the mid sized guys and the bigger guys have gotten along just fine without it for the past 25 years…

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Region locked consoles have been here for 30 odd years.

Some people dont get up front assurance pay without a product being region locked.

Its like a spider web you cant untangle unfortunately
Does nothing for the consumer however so its reasonable to understand why they want it gone and are otherwise ignorant of its purpose.

    • Guest

Could you please elaborate a little bit on this matter?
      Why the region-lock is necessary?

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

A lot of it is business and contract back walk that gets locked behind NDA as well

Atlus had to region lock a few of their games for this reason.

        • British_Otaku

So specifically, out of every PS3 game release and probably dozens under Atlus/Index, only one needed to be locked for any reason and it has the exact same circumstances as any multi region, multi language release but none of the Street Fighter IV releases were region locked aside from when the 3DS locks them by default…

Oh and more than snarky responses or hostility, I just want a more direct source of your reasoning. Like exactly what JP Kellams said and where he said it.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Like I said, its more for the little guy.

You can go find Kellam talking about region locking by doing key word searches on Twitter. ( Like I did to go and get them the first time)

  • ronin4life

  • Time to buy the Phoenix Wright games yet again because I’ve lost control of my life. I hope they do a good job with the 3D, it was surprisingly effective in Dual Destinies.

  • The more significant takeaway from this is that there is now a chance we’ll eventually get Investigations 2 on 3DS, so we can have the complete set.

    • Nanaki

    • VenerableSage

Not to be Debbie Downer, but isn’t that an extremely small chance, given everything that would have to happen?

Not only would this title need to be localized, but the title’s sales performance as a whole would likely have to meet Capcom’s expectations for them to greenlight a second compilation, to which said second compilation would need to be localized also, down the line until AAI2 was reached. Given that all of the other titles already have English scripts in place (and other languages as well, I assume) and Investigations 2 doesn’t, that might put a damper on localization efforts, as they would need to expend much more work for the future compilation that could include it compared to the rest.

      • Guess they could always get the source translation from the fans doing it themselves.

They seem to already be on the job keeping tabs on developments like this anyways…

      • Oh, it’s a long shot for sure, but the possibility exists. Personally, though, I’d much rather they bring us a new Investigations game. When we spoke with them last year, they did say they wanted to do a new Investigations title, and I think it would benefit greatly from being on 3DS, since those are actual point-and-click style adventure games.

        • Barrylocke89

I know not everyone’s a fan, but I really liked the Investigations style. I was worried about it at first but it felt like a natural evolution of the classic style of Ace Attorney.

          • I did, too! It was a nice change, and playing as Miles is a very different experience to playing as Nick or Athena or Apollo. His entire day just consists of him drowning himself in murder and conspiracy.

    • KnifeAndFork

That would entail that Capcom would actually have to put in some effort and work (translating and localizing)
      These are just easy ports…

Still waiting for that Haunting Ground HD version as ounces in 2012….

    • Sigfried Silverblade

      Oh, I’d like that.

    • Tom_Phoenix

And who knows, if we can get a retail complete set, it could also include Dual Destinies and we can finally have Dual Destinies in retail form.

…It’s unlikely, but shut up, I want to dream!

  • ZEROthefirst

I hope this gets localized because I want to get into the series, but without having to go all over the place to get them. I know there’s the new 3DS game, but when I start a series I like to start from the beginning.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Then go Miiverse

      • Do you think requesting games on miiverse does anything? It’s kind of like prayer – even if you get what you ask for it’s difficult to prove there’s a correlation

        • ZEROthefirst

This and it just makes you look like an idiot going around posting “please bring *game title* over here, k thx bye”

          • AuraGuyChris

The idiots who did that managed to convince Nintendo to bring EarthBound to us.

          • ZEROthefirst

If I remember from an article from Reggie not to long ago they stated that while they look at movements like those and Operation Rainfall they aren’t going to bring a game over because of that. Because even if there are 100k+ people saying they want the game it’s not guaranteed that those 100k people are even going to buy the game.
Not saying that these people going out and beyond for a game is pointless, but to a degree it is unless a company finds it profitable to release. Look at Mega Man Legends 3 for example, all of the fans are heavily involved with the game participating in contests and then Capcom scraps it. The group 100k for MML3 surpassed their goal and we still have nothing. I’m one of the people that signed for it and while I do hope the game comes back at some point I don’t know if it truly ever will unless Capcom thinks of it as profitable again.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Which is why demanding capcom gives you this is also a great idea.

AA5 is making them a lot of money.

  • Aoshi00

Hm.. I’m really not sure about this, I mean it’s convenient to have the trilogy together yet again on the latest handheld, yet I can’t help but feel they’re milking it a bit too much (well it is Capcom..), I mean these are originally GBA games, then ported to DS, then to iOS, and now back to 3DS? when the 1st game was re-released on DS, it had a whole new chapter as an incentive, just like Muramasa Vita having 4 chapters even if they’re DLC. and in DS’s case, people who didn’t play the GBA ver got to play them.. but now the 3DS actually plays DS games as well, and the trilogy’s not that hard to find.. I guess the 3D effect would be cool and I want the drama CD as well (I’ve bought the others), and I would import anyway having not missed any Phoenix/Investigations games.. still think it’s a pity Dual Destinies wasn’t released as retail.. guess they could still port it to Wii U or XB1 (smart glass) next…

Also the Jpn DS games had always had dual language option.. at ~$40 I guess it is a good collection even if double or triple dipping..

    • kthanxyousuck

It doesn’t really matter. It’s the same reason that all trilogies are made. For a new generation of gamers who weren’t playing the GBA and DS. Maybe for Japan it’s not needed, but in the US where these games bought separately would cost you about 70 bucks, it’s worth it. And I don’t see it as milking the franchise when they are still continuing to make games in it. This coming from someone who had never heard of Ace Attorney until Dual Destinies.

      • KnifeAndFork

And you can get them on iOS way cheaper

Capcom is just doing this cause they need the quick cash. It’s an easy port to milk same with RE4 HD PC

        • Guest

Cheap? Well yes, the iOS port is vastly inferior to the DS one. Missing animations, music from GBA, several spelling mistakes, clunky interface, among others.

      • Aoshi00

It’s an amazing trilogy indeed and definitely deserves to be played by everyone (1 & 3 are still among the best compared to 4, Investigations 1 &2, and 5 DD). But milking is still milking, like Steins;Gate on every platform under the sun and spinoffs.. it’s like FFX on PS2, now HD remaster on PS3, do we need porting it to next gen again later? even Tomb Raider on PS4/XB1 as a full price game… well, I guess it’s ok, like for a favorite movie, you buy and collect on VHS, DVD, blu-ray, and then 4K blu-ray.. of course for those who have yet to play these games at all, $40 w/ 3D effect and drama CD is a good bargain, I’ve bought other drama CDs for $20-30 just by itself. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but it’s being ported upward quite frequently.. I would import as well and hope it would have nice cover art (I’ve bought all Jpn & US ver for each game as well).

Still, for yet another re-release, it would be better w/ even more extra features like optional full voice acting and new chapters. Good thing for those who haven’t played of course. As it is now, it’s another quick port for easy cash grab after iOS.. it would’ve been great if they ported it to the Wii U at least to play on TV at this price, since there’s the gamepad now.

    • LanceCS

Add to that the Windows, Wii and Android ports. The amount of milking is absolutely shameless.

  • Leon_Tekashi

And now it’s a good time for me to start playing these games. I’m sure this will sell, and then they better port Apollo Justice to the 3DS next. =)

  • Enzo

I want to buy this… but I already own the games. If I hadn’t already owned it, I would be more excited about this.

  • hazelnut1112

    English options, this is fantastic.
    DAY ONE IMPO…Oh wait, never mind ;_;

  • AokiShizuku

I love how this man words his feelings.

  • >Japanese version will also have English language option available

I was happy to hear this until I remember it’s region lock

    • J_Joestar

yeah, it would be nice if the game doesn’t have a region code programmed into it.

  • kthanxyousuck

This is totally worth it and I want it. Like all trilogy games, there’s a lot of people who haven’t started the series from the beginning. And when the games are spread out over a good number of years (the first one came out 8 years ago), finding DS copies that are DECENTLY priced is a hassle. Having them all on one cartridge where you can just go from one game to the next is wonderful! Plus you can’t beat the potential price. If this comes over here it’ll probably be $29.99 for three full games. (example: Amazon is charging almost the same price as Dual Destinies is now for AA: Justice for all)

Because these games have already been translated, I don’t see why there would be a problem with it coming over.

    • Kamakuma

I’ll have to object there for a bit my friend. I got the entire trilogy for under 40 bucks which each came with their original case and manual.

(Which seems to be rare with used games as people tend to put them in some sort of sleeve and throw out the cases… Which I can understand for space but you know rants. >~<)

  • Namuro

Oh sweet! I’m gonna get this for sure! Thanks for putting in the English script option, CAPCOM. I wish you would do this with, like, every games!

  • British_Otaku

If I only get one game in the month, this will be the one, though I’m not 100% convinced that I need the limited edition and I’m waiting for them to have a Gyakuten Kenji + Translation release.

  • Max

I love how the language option is becoming a standard.

  • Göran Isacson

Oooh, the original trilogy. Seldom has a series of games wormed their way into my heart like that one did, and while I already own all the older titles I do think I’d like to buy this if it ever comes around to our shores… if only so that one can, as Ishaan said, fuel the tiny, tiiiiny hope of an Investigations compilation too.

  • Anthony Birken

Well, I’m open if they ever have it in the west~

  • fairysun

    Need Maya Fey’s love.
The last 3 Phoenix game that I played did not include her besides cameo appearance.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

You best believe I’ll be getting this. if there’s anything on this world I’m a fanboy for, its Ace Attorney.

  • NeoPancho

Hopefully they improve a little bit the graphics and sound… using the same style of graphics than the 3DS game would be really awesome, but i can’t picture Capcom putting too much effort into this proyect.

Hopefully it will get released in Europe… worst case scenario, i would have to buy the japanese one, i don’t see myself passing on this one ^_^U…

    • AuraGuyChris

Maybe they’ll use the iOS updated graphics.

      • NeoPancho

It’s my understanding they didn’t do such a great job with the iOS versions (i haven’t played them) and they are missing some frames… then again between DS and 3DS there isn’t that much difference in resolution so they might leave the graphics as they are (the same ones than in GameBoy Advance ^^U…) and add a couple of layers to get the 3D effect… but how i wish they use the same engine than with the 3DS game!

  • YES. I KNEW I would be vindicated for holding out this long. Time for me to finally play Ace Attorney.

  • DarkLight

    C’mon bring this over……pretty please?

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

The fact that this even exists is a testament to the fact that you all showed up and voted with your wallets. Capcom gave you an opportunity and you took it.

    Well done folks.

    • British_Otaku

It is a Japanese release, so I am one of the few people here which are directly connected to this release assuming that only Japanese releases count (which is selfish/stupid/whatever, but as it hasn’t been confirmed for anywhere else yet, probably a correct call).

Now, if they’d actually localize the second Miles Edgeworth game, I’d be happy as can be,.. XD
