Persona Q: Shadow Of The Labyrinth Gets Sillier With Junpei And Yukari

By Spencer . February 7, 2014 . 1:01am

If these Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth videos were in English, Yukari would have called Junpei "Stupei" at least once. Junpei added comic relief to Persona 3, a role Teddie filled in Persona 4. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth brings both comedic characters together and Junpei already has a ridiculous disguise. Teddie should’ve came in right there with one of his gag glasses.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth comes out in Japan on June 5.

    • Jero

      I was expecting PQ music…

    • Shane Guidaboni

      Mexico City? That’s so random.

    • bluedragonx

Surprised to hear the lyrics from the P3 FES version of Mass Destruction. Usually, he only raps the original version’s lyrics,

  • flameraver64

Ugh, the dungeon part is in 1st person, right? Don’t like first-person, which sucks cuz this game looks awesome =/

    • Zoozbuh

Same, that’s the only thing lowering my excitement for it to be honest :/ Not a fan of that style.

    • Hound

I’d read the recent interview that was done for Persona 5.

Atlus has stated that “Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth” is a collaboration within Atlus where their Etrian Odyssey (aka Yggdrasil Labyrinth) team is cooperating to make another Persona-based game for this year. So, it’s not a surprise that the Etrian Odyssey team using Etrian Odyssey IV’s game engine is resulting in a 1st person dungeon crawler.

I find that the 3d aspects that do exist in this game & its art style to be fascinating. And as a fan of both Persona 3/4 & Etrian Odyssey IV, I’m quite excited for the title.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. We each like our own thing. And knowing that this game is essentially Persona Odyssey does add to the charm.

      • flameraver64

Haha nothing to be “wrong” about, I get headaches when playing games in first person so that’s the extent of why I don’t like it

        • kthanxyousuck

Same here. I played the demo of Millennium Girl and the turning to look around made me so freaking dizzy =(

          • natchu96

I know people who get that reaction a lot, and it baffles me.

Do they not turn their heads in real life? Real life is first person.

Not bashing here, I’m legitimately curious O_O

          • Hound

Just curious. Do you play with the 3D on or off?

      • Shane Guidaboni

I still can’t tell what exploration is going to be like in this game since they haven’t showed any of it. They’ve showed snippets of areas being “checked”, but nothing with manual movement.

      • Jero

I like the little additions though, like when Junpei appears when you open the door. I hope the battles are more persona/smt alike rather than Etrian Odyssey. Also where’s muh social links. There is a lot of stuff that’s left unclear.

        • Hound

I’d bet that the Visual Novel-like social links won’t exist. This is mostly because of the content focus.

The school/city its-self doesn’t seem to be a standard playing environment in Q. Mostly because of the game’s premise.

(Everyone’s at their cultural fairs and reality is altered bringing Persona 3/4 protagonists together. 2 mysterious people show up. Antics ensure.) We’ve been shown the cultural festival, the labyrinth, and the protagonists.

I don’t know, they ensured us that there are 2 separate storylines and I haven’t seen anything to ensure that the outside of the clock tower is playable at all.

          • Jero

I think it was stated that there was one story but viewed with two different angles (P3 or P4) so it focuses more in the cast of the path you chose.

The thing is, we know almost nothing regarding game play. Even Etrian Odyssey games have a town where you buy/sell supplies and I guess this game has to have that as well, it have yet to see an RPG where you don’t earn money for buying equipment. Also what made P3/P4 popular where not only their characters but the interaction between the MC and them.

So my guess is that there may not be social links but there’s definitely a “town” or something.

      • kthanxyousuck

I wouldn’t mind if the battling is 1st person and the exploration is 3rd person. I don’t know why but games with the 1st person view is just really odd to me.

    • Arrngrim

Also not much of a fan of 1st person dungeon crawling anymore, but it’s Persona (and SMT) so I’mma buy it, play it, and beat it. All the characters I love will also make the “style” of game easier to swallow.

  • http://www.myspace.com/Juan_Rod bluejuan85

Lol I burst out laughing when Yukari slapped him. I’m really excited for a US release of this.

    • TrueDefault

US release should be around 2-3 months after Japanese release. I’m psyched!

    • Arrngrim

Is it me…or did that almost look like a “pimp slap”? o.O

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kevassa02 kevassa

First time listening to japanese Junpei. That’s certainly different.
I think I actually prefer him sounding like that (though he sounds a little too old for the character, maybe?).

    • Hound

English Junpei (and Akihiko) probably have the most fitting voices out of all of the characters in P3… Though Junpei does grate my nerves.

  • Timovisch

    Who’s dah man?

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

I can’t wait till Vic Mignona voices the “Ace Detective” at the english version again.

Dat Memories of Our School remix. HNG.

  • notentirelythere

“how many more character profiles… huff… until… huff… there’s a gameplay trailer…?” I ask as I crawl through this desert of Japanese pre-release promo vids

    • Hound

      3 more sets maybe?
We still have Aigis, Naoto, Ritsu, Fuuka,Teddie, and Kanji.

Maybe 4, because Ken & Koromaru didn’t have videos.

      • God

        And maybe ken and koromaru.

      • Saphira

… And there’s also Elizabeth, Margaret, Theo and Marie

  • God

There was a disturbing amount of Bronpei in Yukari’s video… Naaaa, he is too much of a bro for that… unless…
    Minato: … (I feel a disturbance in my harem…)

  • God

Maybe not “Stupei” but she did call him baka 3 times… in the same scene.

  • MVRK HNTR

Chibi Yukari is too kawaii! I would love a duo of Yukari + Chie.

    • Hound

Persona 3 main, Chie, Yukari, Aigis, Naoto. Team short hair ftw!
      Maybe sub Yosuke for Aigis?

      • MVRK HNTR

        Short hair FTW!

And no, keep Aigis. I want more girls.

      • natchu96

        Short-hair Harem squad!

  • Skeptika Crediblus

SD Aegis is just so freaking CUTE I don’t know what the f—.

  • Richard N

    Best girl and bro!

    • Warren

Best bro yes! Best girl is Mitsuru for P3, its a simple mistake. :)

      • Richard N

I’m surprised the Aigis fans didn’t down vote me. Guess people really don’t like Mitsuru….

  • Warboss Aohd

    Bropei!

…………and….Yukari……..whatever, your staying on the bench.

  • Warren

Man I can’t wait to put Junpei on my team, need some humor to balance out the serious members! Yukari….you’ll be on the bench with all the other unchosen people ill never play with.

    • Arrngrim

Amen brotha! Yukari was one of my least favorite Persona babes because she’s that stuck up, airhead type from high school. Not interested! Down-vote away you rapscallions! Mitsuru & Yukiko 4 Life!

      • Warren

High five! About time someone had good taste! Don’t see what people like about her anyway, all she does is whine and complain.

  • Aspenharls

Junpei time is always a good time.

  • souio

Junpei?! “Q”?! At first I thought this was a tie-in with certain other game series!

    • natchu96

You’re not supposed to know Q is important in that series . . . some of the guys here haven’t beaten that :/

      • souio

Thankfully if people google Junpei and Q, 99.9% of the results will lead back to this game :)

  • FlobotingIt

What becomes increasingly interesting is that not only are normal party members seen in the velvet room, but also that Theodore is there, but not the female protagonist. To me, it seems inevitable that she’ll show up at some point, maybe as a bonus boss, or a plot point involving an alternate continuity.

    • Andres Pena

Theo does not equal Fem protag, Theo existed on his own even without the Fem protag

      • Slayven19

Ture, but he was made for p3p for the fem protag route.

        • Andres Pena

yes I know, but its just some people think Theo only exists when the Fem protag exists :p

          • vileBrenman

Well since the Theo is a member of the velvet room it does make sense that he can exist in either dimension. Because the female mc and male mc exist in separate timelines. But the velvet room is connected to the sea of soul and the sea of soul connects all living things including those of alternate timelines

      • FlobotingIt

Oh, okay! I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info, friend!

    • Lalum

Theo was confirmed canon in P4 Arena, so he’s not just in P3P’s alt universe.

      • FlobotingIt

Oh, okay! I haven’t played Arena (don’t worry about spoilers, it’s okay!), so I was unaware of such fact! But thanks for letting me know!

  • Ramón Navas

Is it just me, or Jumpei called Chie cute?

  • moonbound

Don’t know if it was known already, but Yukari’s video makes it seem almost certain that Etrian Odyssey’s two-row party system will be in this.
The major implication is that any remotely effective party will need to contain at least two out of Yukari, Yukiko, Naoto, Aigis, Mitsuru (I think), Koromaru (I think), or the new characters.

    • Warren

Why do you need naoto she doesn’t heal?

      • moonbound

The healing aspect isn’t what’s important, read the “lines” section in http://www.ign.com/wikis/etrian-odyssey-iv-legends-of-the-titan/Party_Composition
Basically, the 2/3 characters in the back line will do very little damage unless they use a “ranged” weapon. That explains the first four I listed, Mitsuru and Koro were included because they have appeared in the back line in gameplay videos but they might still suffer the attack drop.

        • Warren

oh ok, i just saw what everyone had in common which was healing and Naoto didn’t fit, but goes to show i didn’t play EO4 yet.

          • natchu96

            Play it. NOW.

    • 657rod

The two row party system isn’t new at all, the old smt games use it. Can’t expect a persona fan to know that though.

      • moonbound

Well excuse you for your superiority, I’m an EO fan who has also happened to play persona, SMT3/4, DeSu and DDS.

I just assumed that since the game is kinda being made by the EO developers it would use mechanics from Etrian Odyssey and not from a 20-year old game that is tangentially related to persona. It seems pretty likely too since Yukari’s bow attack that hit one front line enemy and a back row enemy is directly lifted from the standard bow class in every Etrian Odyssey game.

  • Firion Hope

    Chibi Yukari <3

  • DyLaN

The way Junpei eyes are drawn kinda makes him…… Stand out compare to the rest of them. Maybe I just need to get use to it.
