Angel Beats! 1st Beat Visual Novel Shows Off Its First CGs

By Eugene . February 9, 2014 . 9:30am

I’ve always wondered why women wearing skirts in anime always somehow end up going ahead of the dudes when they’re climbing up ladders or crawling along ventilation shafts. And in Angel Beats! 1st Beat, you’ll have to ponder the same problem, too, judging by some of these CGs.

The game is a classic visual novel, slipping players into the role of amnesiac Otonashi Yuzuru. In the game series, Otonashi ends up in a after-life limbo school, where people go to “let go” of their past. Instead of doing so however, some are raging against God—one of them being Nakamura Yuri, who leads the Afterlife Battlefront.

During one fight, they accidentally trigger a pitfall trap where Otonashi is clinging on to Yuri’s legs. He’ll have to climb up and out over her, but can’t quite look up. Hmm..

Some other CG for the upcoming game includes Yui, who’s part of the diversion group Girls Dead Monster band as she practices on a guitar. Angel Beats! 1st Beat will have multiple endings and there are six “beats” planned for the series.

Wow, six beats?! Wonder how long the games are going to be. I’ve been hearing about the development on this, I’ve loved all of Keys works so I’m excited :) (I haven’t played Rewrite though, I’ve been meaning to do that!)

I remember the anime was first airing, I don’t want to spoil but holy crap in the last episode when I truly realized the meaning behind the title “Angel Beats” and the EKG design I was totally blown away, I thought it was just a cutesy title with no meaning whatsoever… and then… oh man.

    • SnackEater

Such a great show it had some really great characters the last episode just killed me I was sad it was the end, I’m really looking forward to this :)

    • Cybersteelex

Rewrite is a bit different than the other KEY games though. No Jun Maeda scripts.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

it had many vn authors on it didn’t it?

        • shuyai

yea one writer for each character route if i remember correctly

          • DyLaN

Uh… I think you are wrong. Its co-written by Romeo Tanaka, Ryukishi07 and Yuto Tonokawa.

          • Cybersteelex

I remember Ryukishi07 did Chihaya’s and Akane’s route which bare some resemblance to Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven’s Feel of Fate Stay/Night.

  • Cybersteelex

A fleshed out backstory of TK :O

    • Pinwheel

This was all I was hoping for when I watched Angel Beats.

    • Zer0faith

TK died because he was too awesome. His only regret was that he didnt think he was awesome enough.

      • Servant BerserCAR

Looking back at Episode 11, I think TK is Michael Jackson.

      • His only wish was for humanity to get chance and good luck ;_;

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Yuri can now be mine! :V

Feels like it was a long time ago when this aired… I wish KEY games could be localized. I heard they want a lot of money for people to license their games.

  • Epic Markell Joshua

Looking forward to this and it is for PC awesome alot of good vns are on consoles.

  • Firion Hope

Im at jumping up and down levels of excitement for this game! AB is my favorite anime ever and it always left me wanting more! Also as I said before I finally get Otanashi x Yuri, yay!

Also the art style looks REALLY beautiful and well done to me, generally I prefer older style anime, but I still think AB and this adaptation of it is very wonderful, some of my favorite CG style anime art

  • Keko

    Thanks for reminding me I should learn kanji already, Siliconera! Maybe this VN will finally fill the empty void left by Little Busters! ;_;

  • TheExile285

I hope someone brings this over.

    • Arcana Drill

Key VN = really low chances, the localizers would have to spend a LOT of money cause of licensing.

      • wererat42

MangaGamer has gotten some pretty high-profile licenses from studios like minori, BaseSon, and Circus.

        Some day, maybe…

        • DyLaN

We still need to deal with the (supposingly) xenophobic key head.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Don’t remind me of my depression

  • Cursingcomet

The anime didn’t cover TK, shiina and many more of the others past; hopefully the VN can make up for it.

    • Rocsas

Shiina´s past was shown in the manga prequel.
But yeah they need to show how amazing TK life was…actually it probably was a really bad one like the rest of the cast.

  • SupaPhly

hmm, will each “beat” have a psychical release?
or will it end up being all of them in one pack at the end?

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      in japan

      • SupaPhly

        yeah, I know that -_-
just asking because I usually buy special edition of Key games, but not sure whether I should wait it out until all the “beat” episodes are released

        • Yause

I don’t think they’re sharing that information. Key certainly wouldn’t announce a bundle pack yet, unless they’re eager to kill sales of individual episodes.

  • Sergio Briceño

So the question here is. Will it have 18+ scenes?

    • katzedan

for what I saw on lots of places it’ll be all age… so no +18 scenes! :)

  • Alexandra Cordes

Please tell me we play as Hinata for Yui’s route…

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Angel Beats is a great anime.

  • Really love Angel Beats, but I don’t really think the whole ecchi factor really fits with such a story… >_> Wonder how much of it I should expect there to be in the long run.

    • DyLaN

Didn’t the anime have some fanservice scenes in between the episodes?

      • In between the episodes? I’m not sure what you mean by that.

        • DyLaN

I sort of recall there some fanservice somewhere in AB! but I can’t remember what it is n where so I use that line.

          • Ah, okay. Fanservice is a somewhat nebulous term to begin with, so what that entails to one person will be different from another’s perspective.
At any rate, the event this article refers to was in the anime, but it was just a comedic scene of characters having to climb up Yuri to escape the bottomless pit–the VN on the other hand (going by our very first revealed CG put on display here) opts for a panty shot. I realize this isn’t necessarily representative of the work as a whole, but it leaves me disconcerted, at the very least.

  • I really need to go back and watch this series again. As if not grabbing me until the last few episodes wasn’t enough, I had sworn it was 26 when it was really 13…
While it didn’t leave a huge impression on me, I know any company who would publish this outside Japan would make a lot of people happy (and likely cry again!).

    • DyLaN

Yup, it was original planned for 20+ episodes but executive meddling caused it to be cut down to 13EP.

  • TatsuyaKyo

    Now, we play the game.

    …The “Wait-for-an-english-translation-patch” game, that is.

…Pessimism aside, I really look forward to reading the VN. Eventually.

  • DyLaN|4
Naoe Riki? That younger Char frm the prequel manga right?

  • Eilanzer

this VN is sad as hell =/

    • ImperialX

      It’s not even released yet.

      • Eilanzer

        i mean, the anime…

  • AkiraScare

    localization or fantranslate?…. (0_o)
