Sachi… Is That Really You In Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment?

By Sato . February 11, 2014 . 3:02pm

Those of you who watched Sword Art Online might remember the timid girl Sachi, a member of Kirito’s first group of friends in the Moonlit Black Cats guild, who suffered a tragic end. According to Dengeki’s latest report, she will mysteriously be making a return in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.

As some of you may have noticed in the game’s latest trailer, we got a glimpse of Sachi, too. So yes, if you’re wondering whether she’ll actually be part of the game instead of just flashbacks, Dengeki says that she will be.

(If you wish to avoid spoilers, I advise you to skip the tidbit below)

In the original world of Aincrad in Sword Art Online, those who died in the game also died in real life. As you may recall, Sachi and other members of the Moonlit Black Cats guild met a tragic ending after finding themselves in a locked down area of a dungeon, which caused multiple monsters to spawn, killing most of the players who were in the trap.

According to Dengeki, Kirito and Sachi will be reuniting once again in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. While the reason for her return to the new Aincrad still remains unknown, it looks like you’ll be able to have her in your party in the upcoming game.

Sword Art online: Hollow Fragment will be released on April 24, 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

Bring that shit over here Japan (o.o)/

More snark bait for SAO haters…

    • PreyMantis

I can just see a Log Horizon fanboy somewhere…

    • Vash bane

what do you mean? SAO has haters? I thought it was quite famous.

      • DyLaN

Everything has haters, just that SAO ones are particularly vocal about it.

      • David García Abril

        Oh, it is quite famous.

But it’s also probably the biggest “love it or hate it” anime in recent years.

As DyLaN says, SAO haters are particularly vocal. For most them, SAO was a great premise that got completely ruined (interestingly enough, the point at which the show was ruined varies from person to person). And they seem to take personal offense from people who like the show, for some reason.

  • TheExile285

    Ohohoho. Interesting

  • RichyGaming

Getting the feeling that Sachi will be more of an unlockable character in a side quest. I’m not really sure how she can come back from- oops, almost spoiled one of the first few episodes.

    • DeathDias71

I don’t think you have to worry…they kinda spoiled it in the article…lol.

  • MitsukiIX

i liked her… i was really shocked when that happen. anyway 1 more girl to the kirito harem!

  • Göran Isacson

And yet, all I can think of is… why? Why bring back a character who barely got to BE a character in the first place?

Then I remember that the answer is always “fanservice”, and go on with my life.

    • Vash bane

from what I’ve heard she was his first love interest. that and fan service could be the reasons for her return.

      • Göran Isacson

Huh. I guess that the LN explains that in further detail, because I didn’t get a very strong romantic vibe between them. Then again they only had an episode or so with her, so little wonder.

        • David García Abril

Actually, the whole thing is pretty vague in the novels.

People get that idea from the author, who say they were in love in interviews… sometimes. Apparently, he says they were sometimes, but other times he says the opposite.

Plus, Kirito says explicitly in the novels that they weren’t lovers, but then again, he could be an unreliable narrator, since he says that when he’s explaining to Asuna why he never join guilds anymore.

I guess that Kawahara himself has not made up his mind either.

Maybe he should have left it open to interpretation.

          • Göran Isacson

Probably sounds like the best solution. At this point it sounds like she well and trul was a sattelite character without much importance, meaning that her inclusion in this game most likely is exactly what I first proposed: fanservice, dear boy.

unless it’s part of some kind of horrific mindgame as someone else suggested. That’d be sorta neat, I guess.

    • Thank you for that answer, now I can go on with my life as well.

      • Vash bane

      • Göran Isacson

You and me, buddy. We shall walk into the sunset and on with our lives past this, together.

    • icecoffemix

The whole entertainment industry is fanservice, shocking I know.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    and Kirito strikes again

  • David García Abril

After thinking about it, now I believe the idea has potential.

You know, they can easily use it to mess with Kirito’s head and even put a couple of Mind Screw moments.

  • Warboss Aohd

5 bucks says they kill her off AGAIN to try and force an emotional response from the player.

just like in the show. It was horribly obvious and contrived in the show, and will likely be the case here. But perhaps the game’s writers are actually better at writing, who knows.

    • David García Abril

5 bucks say they don’t kill her because she won’t be alive in the first place. lol

In the show the problem was that it was so rushed. I always thought that storyline had to be made in two episodes instead of one, so they could take their time in developing their relationship and make emotional response more meaningful (although I thought the final scene with the audio recording was one of the highlights of the show). They could have made the mystery mini-arc in one episode instead and keep the episode quota.

      • God

It was originally 1/4 of the second novel, wich is to say around 50 pages, i think they did what they could with what they had.

        • David García Abril

If Kyoto Animation could take 8 episodes out of 30 pages from the Haruhi Suzumiya novels to create the “Endless eight” mini-arc, A1-Pictures could have made 2 episodes out of 50 pages as well.

And even if what we see in the episode is all that there is in the novel (I still have to read it. I’ve only read the first novel), that’s not really an excuse either. Actually, that was probably the biggest problem of the anime: it was too close to the source material.

To be fair, that’s a pretty common issue in anime, but I think in this series it could have been addressed better. Especially considering that, even though many flaws in the novels can be blamed to Kawahara’s writing, there are tons of others that are due to how the novels were published (especially concerning structure and the characterization of some characters, like Asuna).

          • God

Yeah, about endless 8… i don’t think that was the smartest move, did you see all the hate it recieved?

          • David García Abril

            I know. :P

The point is that you can expand on the source material, instead of sticking to it. That was just the first example that popped into my head. :P

    • Ragef33

If it seemed obvious (and quick) that she was going to die, it’s because it was by design.
The first book basically had a 2 year time-skip, and Sachi was mentioned at having been Kirito’s reason for avoiding guilds.

She herself wasn’t introduced until the second book, and even then, she was mostly in flashbacks, while Kirito grinded 24/7 in preparation for the event boss.
Basically, as soon as the story began, even her own side-story, she was already dead. (Her side-story was more about Kirito’s grief, than her actual death,)

  • AuraGuyChris

I hope she doesn’t lag if she’s killed.

(Those who watched SAO Abridged should get the joke.)

    • DeAndre Atchison

Maybe she moved out of the boonies.

      • Daniel Williams

maybe those NPCs will show up too

    • Vash bane

there’s a abridged? XD i’m going to have to check that out

      • Kaitsu

There’s always an abridged series of everything. You just have to find the right ones.

  • Josephl64

She was the only thing I really enjoyed in SAO…so unfair, but so interesting.

If she’s playable in it, I might (sadly) have to get it

  • Will John

I bet hollow fragment is the graveyard for dead SAO players and you find out Philia is actually dead at the end and everyone cries

    • mikebrand83

I thought the title made that a pretty obvious implication: “Hollow” for not real, “Fragment” for leftover fragments of dead players.

  • [S]unjay

I hope that I can play as Suguha.

    • DyLaN

You can only control Kirito though. But you can bring Leafa as a partner NPC.

      • [S]unjay

I guess a NPC is better than nothing.

  • Prinny Dood

I want this game soooo bad

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    Yeahhh Yeahhh Yeahhhhhhhhh.

  • PreyMantis

That name always gets to me, and think of this guy, instead…

    • Renaldi Saputra

ah, Dennou Coil.. I thought almost no one remember this anime

  • Demonspartanx20

The answer is simple, just like all illogical things that happen; one thing is to blame. “Dragon Balls!”

  • Raze

Well Strea is there again after the first game…

Maybe it’s just Sachi’s data that saved in the game or something like that…

Still…More option for harem is always good though…lol…

    • DyLaN

Well, I posted the interview that says HF is an alternate route to IM set in the same time frame which explains why Alberich is back as well.

But Heathcliff….. maybe its like IM again? Actually how did he survive the encounter w/h Kirito again?

  • Daniel Gulyas

Oh hey, my favorite SAO character. And the one that gets zero love. For all the problems that the series had, her arc was effective, if a bit short.

Also, Memory Heart Message is awesome.

  • Yaggyu

plz don’t die in this game

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

In the anime i was sad to see her go but again in the anime at the scene where there are all at the bar after he got back asuna i could swear i saw her in the bar with everyone

  • DyLaN

I find the 3D model of Sachi to be better than her original/anime design. Maybe its the additional details on her outfit. And my best guess for Sachi return is that its either a flashback sequence or her memory data that are stored in Aincrad (refer The Day After SS for detail on this) “came back”.

There also the explanation for the new “Burst” feature in the dengeki article for those who are curious/can read japanese.

    • icecoffemix

Or they’re all just AI fragment of the character that inhabited Ainscrad before. :P

      • DyLaN

        Oh crap, Philia……

        • icecoffemix

Oh by the way, is she voiced by Kana Hanazawa?

          • DyLaN

            Yui Ishikawa.

          • icecoffemix

Bah, what a missed opportunity Bamco.

          • DyLaN

I thought KanaHana VA voice is commonly used for “childhood friend” type?

          • icecoffemix

I just thought that she looks similar to a certain popular IS character and they could exploit that fact.

  • cyberkinghardy

I don’t mind it being in Japanese, Just make a copy for R3. Don’t hog all the goodies, Mr. Japan.

  • artemisthemp

Guess Kirito finaly will get a chance to charm Sachi :P

  • Erwin MadJelly

Any idea when is the chinese version coming out? Thinking of buying it since I watched season 1

  • Linhua

    *sniffles* … Welcome back, Sachi-kins…

  • oddfoxx

Yeah,as soon as I realized they offer permanently,i was out.If they gonna pull stupid shit like that right outta the gate,i have no time for em
