Forbidden Magna Came From The Desire To Create Something New

By Sato . February 18, 2014 . 1:47am

Marvelous AQL recently revealed a new strategy RPG they’re cooking up with the developers of Rune Factory. Titled Forbidden Magna, the game will feature a Valkyria Chronicles-like battle system, and the cute visual style of Harvest Moon with a side of inn management. 4Gamer gives us a closer look at the main character and friends.

The story of Forbidden Magna revolves around the innkeeper and protagonist, named Lux, who meets different “Spirits”. As he meets various Spirits and befriends them, Lux grows and becomes stronger over time.

One day, Lux meets a mysterious girl named Charlotte. While she seems to have lost her memories, she has very destructive powers. After spending some time together with Charlotte, Lux discovers a tremendous truth about the world, which starts putting things into action.

While you can check out detailed characters descriptions in our earlier report, here’s a closer look at Lux, along with his Spirit friends and their weapons of choice, in the form of screenshots.

Additionally, Forbidden Magna producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto also left a message for fans on the game’s recently opened official website:

“Looking back at it now, it was immediately after we finished developing Rune Factory 4, when I felt that I wanted to make something new, and those around me also voiced the same opinions. And that’s how the new challenge of Forbidden Magna came to be.

“Rather than going out on a journey, the stage is set in a place you’ll be returning to afterwards, as you befriend Spirits, and they’ll be living together with you as employees at the inn.

“We had some unexpected events occur in the midst of development, and while we did face some hardships, I’d like to thank the staff who gathered together for this challenge, from the bottom of my heart. As far you fans, I we’ll do our best to continue sharing the latest on the game. Thank you for your continued support.”

Forbidden Magna will be released sometime in 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.

Hope they’ll localize it in Europe (and in a physical form). I’m really interested in it.

“One day, Lux meets a mysterious girl named Charlotte. While she seems to have lost her memories, she has very destructive powers.”

…I do have a degree of hope for the game, but I just can’t help feeling a little bit of dissonance between the post title and that description.

They are playing the “Mysterious Waif” and “Laser-guided Amnesia” RPG tropes straight it seems.

We’ll have to see how it plays out. I’m not too worried though.

    • natchu96

It’s practically required to have an amnesiac, a mysterious waifu, and very destructive powers to be a JRPG. The three may or may not have to be the same person.

      • neocatzon

Once there’s someone thinking like that you know when some trope being overused. Even you said that as a joke, these things are not required for JRPGs’ story or any genre in every medium of storytelling. There’s no telling how good or bad the story will be but using a convenient plot tool like amnesia when they’re trying to make something new is just plain unnerving.

        • natchu96

          Yeah that was sarcasm.

It does suck, doesn’t it? And clearly this is going to end up as somewhat of a harem protagonist as well. Shonen Requirement #4 >_>

Plot is kind of a JRPG staple, but frankly it’s pretty much the same plot each time anyway, so really we’re here for the execution and the gameplay right?

          • neocatzon

They made Rune Factory so I believe in monogamy routes lol.

Yeah, agree. Kinda hate it that most JRPGs do the same formula
blablabla save the world. Heck, I buy Tales of games because the battle system only. Good thing we still have SMTs with Law, Neutral, Chaos endings.

          • Shippoyasha

The protagonist being a full on inn keeper is pretty nice to me. I hope they capitalize on that and make the rest of the game feel more unique.

Once you have amnesia, everything becomes new and interesting lol

    • Namuro

I guess you can just look at it as the team continuing their tradition. ALL the main characters from the Rune Factory series have amnesia, and some also hold secret destructive powers like being able to turn into a cute sheep that can giant swing monsters! Only this time it applies to one of the heroines instead. LOL

I don’t really mind this kind of premises. There’s always bound to be overly used tropes here and there in every game; stuff like a hero with a tortured past, cocky-devil may care youngster, silent protagonist, reformed villains, etc.

The amnesia is just an easy way to introduce things, it’s the stuff that comes later that will decide the content’s true worth. There are also at least 3 main heroines to work with here, so there’s quite a lot to look forward to. I mean it’s not like they all have amnesia… :D

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Oh, I know amnesia is pretty much a Rune Factory tradition, and 3 in particular made some jokes about their own formula.

All I’m saying is… “This again…??“. Not that I’m holding it to the devs, but it kinda stands out when juxtaposed closely to what they just said about wanting to create something new, you know? XD

        • Namuro

I know that the amnesia thing is used quite a lot (though, I can’t really think of any recent games that have the amnesiac main character…), but I think it serves as a sort of template. In my opinion, it’s like a cookie cutter (well, it is one…) which will always produce the same shape, but it depends on the maker to pour in all the different ingredients that will result in an entirely new product. For one, you have so many different kind of cars out there with different built and specs, but at the end of the day, they are still a 4-wheel vehicle.

The game’s development is still in its very early stage anyway, so let’s have faith and see what kind of wonder the team can bring forth!

Man, how did I go from amnesia to a car? Forgive me for my silly comparison!

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I’m quite sure Etrian Odyssey Untold did the “amnesiac mysterious girl” recently. Not sure about the destructive powers though.

I agree that amnesiac characters can be made interesting, but the downside is that they’re usually a bright neon sign saying “There will later be a surprise related to those memories.“, especially when there’s nothing else substantial to those characters aside from the memory loss at the start. It could be a negligible drawback if the story isn’t mainly about the past concealed by the amnesia, but I’m not holding my breath for that possibility.

          • Göran Isacson

Man do I agree with the latter part of your post. How cool would that be, that the main character of the story has amnesia at the start of the game… and he NEVER regains his memories, because who he used to be is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY to the plot.

Or if he has to have a backstory, it’s that he used to be a nobody: he just got in an accident one day, and had amnesia. I tink that could actually be kind of cool: maybe he lived a completely shut-in existence with no kind of excitement or drama at all, but when all that was removed from him he suddenly became the sort of person who could go out on a big epic JRPG adventure. Just… anything new, man. Anything at all.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

What you said is essentially what I have in mind regarding the amnesia trope.

    • Lemski07

      Hyakka Ryouran lol

    • Demeanor

Fairy Fencer F XD to name one XD

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Amnesiac character written by Inoue Toshiki, huh? I’m suddenly reminded of Kamen Rider Agito.

    • God

      Maybe they meant gameplay-wise?

  • Namuro

Looking good so far! Sure hope we can see some video footages soon, or at least some more information regards the inn-management system, as well as the combat!

  • Notquitesure?

Adell what are you doing? This isn’t your game, its not Disgaea :)

        • Shady Shariest

          Congratulationz, Yupo! :3
          *Throws confetti*

  • Liamv2

Sigh amnesia again? As much as I love the Rune Factory games the amnesia thing was beginning to wear a bit thin. Well I hope they do something new with it.

    • JMaster3000

i kinda find them funny lol
I don’t mind, it makes their games unique.

  • Göran Isacson

An inn-running RPG sounds kinda neat, though I do wonder what those unexpected events were… is that what they’re calling the closure of Neverland?

  • Kai2591

The girls in this game are cute.
    I like.

  • artemisthemp

This sound like Date a Live

  • DyLaN

    *look at the up/downvotes*
Looks like some ppl have too much time on their hand…..

    • Notquitesure?

I just wonder why whoever does this picks the numbers they do. Why not something ridiculous like 400 or something.

  • Shady Shariest

So… The “New” will be gameplay mechanics?

  • Yan Zhao

Glad XSeed shows interest in localizing this. Looking forward to it.

  • Callonia

I just wish the ingame sprites isn’t chibi :(

  • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I’m kind of of two minds on this whole thing. For one, sounds cute, fun and relaxing. On the otherhand, it doesn’t sound like something “new” from them so much as something not titled RF but similar enough.

As for the designs, I like them a lot overall, but some feel a bit garish and oddly gaudy, but everything looks like it translated well to the graphics~.

In the end, I’m already kind of excited and my only qualm is that this makes me wish we had another title like FFF : Chocobo’s Dungeon and that there were more games like this, and that they added the option to play as male or female.

  • Kornelious

This game is coming along pretty fast. Hopefully it will live up to it’s potential :)

  • AkiraScare

    Beatrice MARRY ME!!!!!!

… I hope that marriage is an option…..

… and if they have bikinis plz don’t choose the same crappy ones from RF4… Hated those everyone bought them at the same place (-_-)

  • Vash bane

game sounds weird to me then again I was never one for harvest moon ( don’t understand it or its appeal) I guess the same goes for the chronicles series i’m used to turn based games but that battle system never set right to me (lmao if only you could see my face when I played it)
