Square Enix Registers Trademark For Final Fantasy VII’s Shinra Company

By Spencer . February 18, 2014 . 11:31pm

image Square Enix keeps saying that a Final Fantasy VII remake is too big of a project to take on, but perhaps they’re doing something else with the Final Fantasy VII universe. A trademark for Shinra Company was registered in Japan.

Shinra Company was the power company in the world of Final Fantasy VII that also had a space division and the elite SOLDIER group. The trademark was registered for use with video games so we can cross out those nifty Shinra business card cases. Hmm… well Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII was centered on the Turks so maybe Square Enix is planning another spinoff?

SE’s taking the evil monopoly thing literally

  • Kenny Loh

Just forget about the FF7 remake if hard to make, and make the final sequel of FFVII that tell about story of Genesis on Vita or PS4, thanks~

    • Chip

Does anyone really WANT anymore of Genesis? He’s sort of a laughing stock amongst FF villains.

      • DragKudo

He was more of an anti-hero though

    • Draparde

I agree. they should at least finish what they started lol.

    • DragKudo

      Final Fantasy VII: Loveless?

      • LustEnvy

edited: The title has to start with an E and have a C as well, to follow what they’ve done to date. Final Fantasy: Etude of Chaos. Or something even more strange.

        • DragKudo

          Because of CC, Doc, EoL?

          • LustEnvy

Actually, it’d have to be E and C.

            Advent Children
            Before Crisis
            Crisis Core
            Dirge of Cerberus
            Etude of Corruption (?)

Fun figuring out what S-E would use as the title of their next FFVII project…

          • Karn McCloud

Or possibly continue the “Core” or “Crisis” theme, wrapping, as I see it.
Before Crisis lays a lot of backwork working towards the “Crisis” (Meteor?)
Crisis Core is the core or start of the Crisis.
FFVII can be considered “The Crisis”
Perhaps if a sequel were to be made it could be “End of Crisis”?

          • Fastchrone

i come here to say that.
(S)hin-ra (C)ompany? are they finally breaking their own A-D C rules?

          • Daniel Sheridan

A popular one is “Endless Crisis”

    • Karn McCloud

As Gackt pretty much told SE to go fuck ’emselves on coming back as Genesis and Genesis is modelled after Gackt’s likeness I doubt we’ll see his return unless Gackt changes his mind

      • Ni ~Algidus~

:0 this i didn’t knew this. what happened?
Also i’m really glad that Genesis has a good chance of never coming back. worst character in the whole VII saga

      • delmar

Good because his inclusion in Dirge Of Cerberus made the game that much worse and that is saying a lot. that game was a fan-service crap fest. I think that was my tipping point in realizing Square no longer cares about quality in all aspects.

  • Slickyslacker

    Que up the band.

    (One of my favorite tracks.)

  • JustThisOne

That’s cute, but I feel like this will only disappoint those who were hoping for a remake. I don’t think anyone expects this to be anything more than a spin-off or a browser game, but it’s still encouraging saltiness all the same. :V

  • chibidw

    Shinra mobile card game.

  • Detrimont

please be a before crisis remake!!!

    • I was JUST going to say that. Oh, I hope hope hope it is. (And for 3DS. It has the cameras!)

      • Detrimont

        so do smartphones……(ew)
i want it on 3ds as well

  • Guile

Probably something like Tiny Tower for Android and/or iOS. :P

  • Heropon

Final Fantasy VII Card game for IOS

    • Derry Santoso

Sad, but probably true, this is square enix we’re talking about here

  • BB

Let me guess……another frigging cell phone game?

  • Anewme…Again

A micro-management smartphone game where you have to manage Shinra compagny and bring it to power.
That’s what i first thought when i saw the titles…
SE sure have fallen low, i never would have thought something like that 10 years ago.

    • neocatzon

Tiny Death Star came to my mind.

    • Zetayuri

Sad thing is that’s probably what it will be. :(

    • Slickyslacker

Long Live the Queen: FF VII Edition

    • LaserVision

      Power company simulator, duh.

  • hazelnut1112

Something tells me that Toriyama will somehow shove Lightning in there somehow.

    • Hmm. Perhaps, but I think there was an article before suggesting that Lightning Returns is SE’s final take on the character.

      • Anewme…Again

No, they only said Return was the last game that would have Lighting as the main character.

    • konsama

It’s when the turks find a tsundere pink haired girl that is strong as jenova, and they decide to recruit her for the Turks, beating the crap of wutai and any other opposer in posing and fashion like the turks had never seen before.

      • JoJo_718

So in the remake, Lightning will replace Sephiroth!?

  • Tom

Crisis Core was a really great game, I really-really enjoyed it. Too bad western games didn’t have the opportunity to fully enjoy the compilation with Before Crisis missing. I hope something good is coming up and not another mobile card game…

  • Haganeren

I don’t want a remake of FFVII but i find what he said about it a little shocking…

I mean, if a game with the magnitude (number of environment, size of the world, number of NPC, number of events throughout the games) of Final Fantasy VII cannot be done anymore with the new technology. I kind of wonder why we needed this technology in the first place !

Yeah, it’s cool, the character are talking, they do real animation too. The games is in full 3D too we can turn the camera around !…. But was it really worth it ?

    • Tiredman

Been thinking that way for years upon years, Basically since last gen started and I played the first batch of rpg’s where for every good one we got multiple lackluster ones. For every Lost Odyssey we got a highly annoying Star Ocean, Enchanted Arms, and a good deal of other lackluster games that were huge in the past but became crap with new hardware.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

Oh…. My…. GOD!….. Are you seriously serious?! This news actually excites me enough to wait for further details about this new FF7 related thingy. But hopefully they will make a new FF7 game that would be taking place after Dirge of Cerberus storyline. Cloud VS Genesis, I’ve been waiting for that moment to appear in front of my eyes! Hehe :D

    • 3PointDecoupage

Hope you have a cell phone.

      • Kamen Rider Rayz

Come on man, think positive! Who knows what Square Enix have in store! But lets just hope that its not an another smartphone game.

  • Zer0faith

Could it be Crisis Core HD?
Frankly I’d be happy if they just released FF 15 already and put Crisis Core in the PSN store already.

  • Karn McCloud

Either aforementioned crappy mobile games or the long awaited Before Crisis port ala KH Re:Coded?

  • megaten666

And yet again, a new FFVII product might happen.
So original, it’s like FFVII never got any side stories before!
It’s like other FFs does not even exists!
    Oh, the excitement!

Actually, no. In fact, I’m pretty tired of FFVII :/

    • Haganeren

The original product was good… But I really disliked all side-story after that. Advent Children doesn’t make sense, Dirge of Cerebrus wasn’t good anough for me and the only part that i actually enjoyed in Crisis Core were the part which existed already in the original game. (I have a hard time liking Genesis and the other…)

  • Aoshi00

I still have the red cup to commemorate the inauguration of President Rufus :)

Well hope it’s not another mobile game :P.. I must say I’m seeing Shinra in a new light now after the tsunami and TEPCO’s handling of the nuclear meltdown (Mako energy).. life imitating art.. and Avalanche being a terrorist group even though they’re against an evil conglomerate.. amazing to see themes still relevant today.. still disappointed S-E thinks a FF7 remake is too much for them :(

  • fairysun

Maybe this story is about Shinra creation. The founder is a good guy who cares about environment and future of humankind. So he founded Shinra as a mean to that. Somewhere along that line, he died and succeeded by evil CEO and became Shinra that we knew in FF VII(and its spin-off). You know, typical real-life company.

  • Skeptika Crediblus

When asked for further comment, they said “This extremely marketable property we’re beating to death? Yeah, we’re not doing anything substantial with it. Just dickin’ around.”

  • the_rain

Don’t be mobile and please be in vita, 3ds, or other console.

  • Mobile game on the way.

  • chroma816

They’ll never, ever remake FFVII because of all the money they can make by panning it out and constantly teasing and releasing projects related to it.

  • Probably mobile

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    mobile game…….

  • raulrain

    in one word . . . . . “social” :P

  • yellowmage

Please be a Before Crisis remake for Vita, please be a Before Crisis remake for Vita, please be a Before Crisis remake for Vita […]

  • MK

    Before Crisis iOS remake

  • 하세요

I’m on board for a Before Crisis on 3DS with additions / enhancements. The Turks are my favorite FF group.

  • Watch it be a Management Sim for iOS.

  • Kikster

It’s really sad when you’re as greedy as the fictional company you’re trying to milk money out of.

  • Hound

Woo… new mobile game that nobody will want to buy whose microtransactions will rival All the Bravest and Million Arthur >.>

  • Guest

    Might be a Movie.

  • delmar

I remember an interview after Crisis Core (2007) was completed that they were hoping to keep VII current for another 10 years. I guess this is what they meant? Also wasn’t there an interview a year ago one of the excecs talking about what a shame it was that Before Crisis wasn’t brought over to the US. And maybe I imagined this last part but didn’t Square also mentioning a possible PSP version in 2008ish?

EDIT- they also mentioned giving Crisis Core the HD treatment.

  • Chip

Just to cover the basis: Who exactly is taking out the copyright on ShinRa? The article is a little unclear.

  • popo123

Use those remastered assets you used in that new smartphone type-O game and bring the whole Type-O game to the Vita. I mean c’mon they already have the assets!

  • WyattEpp

Well, they can’t possibly be any worse than TEPCO, right?

  • Daniel Sheridan

Well the Dirge of Cerberus secret ending pretty much grantees another squeal eventually. VII-2 mayhaps? :P Another guess would be perhaps it is connected to the gold sauser they are developing for FF 14.

  • Barrit

If it’s a mobile game.. I won’t be playing it. I will not be sucked in like FF Airborne Brigade.

  • Kevin Schwarz

Oh PLEASE! Let FFVII just rest… these greedy fellows keep on milking the living materia out of the overly used story… and let me guess… a mobile game? Card game perhaps? …

  • samjosiah

    I’m a little hopeful.
