Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Characters Can Use Other Personas

By Sato . February 20, 2014 . 12:32pm

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will feature several characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4 along with their Personas. This week’s Famitsu magazine says the game’s characters will be able to use additional Personas for the first time.

In Persona Q, you’ll be making your party of 5 out of 20 different characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4. While it is recommended to have a balanced party that can hit different weaknesses, there will be special dialogue depending on your party mix, so in the end, its up to you to decide who you want to include.

The characters will be set in front and back rows. You’ll be putting your melee characters in the front, and ranged attackers, healers, and other support role characters in the back.

Now, onto the Persona selection bit. In Persona 3 and 4, only the protagonists where allowed to use different Personas, while your other party members were restricted to just one. However, Persona Q will allow you to set sub-Personas to the other characters. That way, they’ll be able to use other skills that aren’t available through their main Personas, giving you a large number of strategic options.

Additionally, there’s a new “Boost” feature in the game, which is similar to the “All-Out Attacks” from past Persona games, but with a couple of twists. By using skills to hit enemy weaknesses, your character will enter a Boost mode. While in Boost mode, your skill costs will be at 0 SP.

Having a character in Boost mode can also lead to a “Follow-Up Attack,” where one character can attack, followed by another’s assistance. They will also do the familiar All-Out Attacks, but it won’t be done in the same way, as having more characters in Boost mode is said to increase the odds of Follow-up attacks and All-Out Attacks.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will be released in Japan on June 4, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.

I seriously cannot wait for Atlus to announce an US release date.

    • AuraGuyChris

Oh yes, even more so if it’s dubbed.

      • RichyGaming

P3 MC might get a new voice actor if its dubbed. Both he and Yosuke share the same VA and I don’t think it’ll stay that way.

If it does change, Bryce Papenbrook has my vote.

        • Detrimont

they didn’t change P4 protag’s voice when they dubbed the anime(i’m mentioning this because JYB voiced adachi as well)), so i don’t see why they would

        • Spirit Macardi

He uses slightly different ranges for the two though. For the Persona 3 protagonist he uses his Suzaku voice, where as for Yosuke he’s more like young Simon.

Much like how Johnny used his Lelouch voice for Yu, but his Vash voice for Adachi.

          • Notquitesure?

Having watched Code Geass a lot i don’t find Bosch’s portrayal of Yu sound like Lelouch at all. Yu sounded a bit flat to me.

          • Spirit Macardi

They’re both still using his lower range though. Granted it’s hard to compare a calm, collected character like Yu to a colossal ham like Lelouch x3

        • DeadLineDance

Yeah, I kinda hope they do that as well. JYB as Yuu and Adachi talking to himself in the anime was really awkward.

          • joe yabuki

Well the differences is one has more screentime and less talking while the other has less screentime and being more talkactive to balance it out.

      • Zetsuei380

Well seeing this is Atlus and part of the persona series, I’d be more surprised if they didn’t dub this.

  • Dragard Kaos

Glad they’re letting all the characters switch around Personas like in Persona 1 and 2. Could it be because they met Igor or went into the Velvet Room?

    • DragKudo

Maybe. Would be nice if they feature this in future persona games. Main persona and subs to boost the main one.

    • JustThisOne

Seems like two timelines (P3 and P4) colliding, so… Maybe twice the personas as a result?

  • Junko Enoshima

Other characters using additional personas??? Wow, I have NEVER seen that before in other Persona games. Ever.

    • Rohan Viajar

It just said that in P3 and P4 the other characters were restricted.
It didn’t say anything about P1 and P2, so why gotta be like that?

      • Junko Enoshima

        Eh, I’m impulsive.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Can you see your characters in battle? I thought this game was like Etrian Odyssey.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

Not when idling, but they appear when attacking.

      • 3PointDecoupage

        So its like DQ8?

        • DaiRaiOh

More like Lost Heroes or 7th Dragon

  • Arrngrim

Blasphemy! Only the Protag’s have the Wild Card! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

    • MakoSoldier7

thats only in P3/4. In P1/2 everyone in the party was selected by philemon, and everyone got to change personas in the velvet room.

      • Kazekage Gaara

Too bad most of the Persona fanbase don’t even care about 1 and 2….quite sad really :(

        • Tienron

still think 2 was one of the best out of the series

      • Arrngrim

I know. ;) Just having a little fun with it!

    • KoRLumen

Well, they don’t strictly change their Personas, from what I understand. *shrug*

    • Nap1400

Apparently they explain this one by saying that having two wild cards causes them to resonate and affect the whole cast or something. Which sounds plausible, even if they just pulled it out of thin air for this.

  • benhofb

I think it is really interesting that Q seems like it will have a lot of features from both old and new Persona titles. For instance, the placing characters in the front/back element to battles. That is something we haven’t seen since Persona 1, but are seeing now. I find it quite awesome, since it adds so much more nostalgia and everything with things like that. Can’t wait for a US (and European!) release date!

    • Bunzi

To be fair, that’s less pulling from Persona and more from Etrian Oddysey.

      • benhofb

Yes yes, this is true. But I it still reminds me a lot of Persona 1. Etrian Oddysey as a whole reminds me of that type of “classic RPG” that Persona 1 would fall into.

    • silvardepoch

I don’t know if it’s a nod to P2:IS/EP, but I’m going to take the whole “protag you chose is silent while the other is voiced” as one.

  • DragKudo

    • Dragard Kaos

Well, you do see the butterfly in some of the trailers, though it’s usually caught in a web.

      • Warboss Aohd

        Nyarlothotep’s Web!

        • DragKudo

I don’t think that’s Nyarlathotep anymore. (I was looking up some stuff about Nyaralthothep I always check the megaten or anything related to see if there is any new info on him). On the site it said Nyralathotep symbol is a black butterfly. That doesn’t mean the spider can’t be him, just it got me thinking what if it is someone else.

          • Warboss Aohd

Nyarlothotep is an Eldritch Horror, he doesn’t play by anyone’s rules.

            he does what he wants.

  • SlickRoach

Dang, if they had this feature in P3 I’d have actually beaten it and probably bought P4 Golden. It’s like playing Pokémon and only being able to change out one member of your team.

    • benhofb

      • SlickRoach

I no longer have it but I enjoyed the social links more than anything.

    • notentirelythere

Duuude, I don’t think that’s an apt comparison.
Modern Persona games are all about understanding team composition. Part of what makes them interesting is, throughout the story, having to fill gaps presented to you (for example, going through half the game without instant death spell characters/decent buffs) and having to deal with a set party that forces you to work around obstacles like bosses that can hit your weaknesses and understanding risk/reward output (like, having a non-dedicated healer fill in for Yukari against a Wind spell using boss, or just buffing/debuffing with Suku spells). Understanding what situations each party member is best for through specific floorsets is also a fun bit of the puzzle (like, Kanji being the main physical DPS in P4, but Chie being able to hit multiple enemies at once… which is more valuable here?). Building a set of Personas to work around favored party combos is, I think, much more interesting than the alternative “equip most any Persona you have to whomever”–it involves compromise and asymmetry amongst your party!
It’s also cool how the whole artificial difficulty of say, other SMT games where the death of the MC means auto game over, is balanced by the versatility of the main character–with being able to switch weaknesses/resistances at will, it’s another game responsibility that I think adds a fun extra element of strategy, and is mechanically fair (though outside of strict mechanic fairness, like in the context of the story, it doesn’t ‘feel right’ to a lot of people).

  • Boost mode sounds interesting – wish that was in P4. :P

I really want this game. The only “headache” I can see from this game will be who to choose.

  • Aaron Alcindor

This is the true “Persona 3”

  • Demonspartanx20

    • God

      Let’s go!

      • Demonspartanx20

lmfao hell yeah, now all i want is a North American release date so i can pre-order this and then put myself in cryo sleep till the release date

  • ZnTxn

    Basically, EO sub-classing. :V
    Can’t wait to play this.

  • Natat

So, this game’s take on sub-classing, I like it.

  • Liamv2

Makes sense. They went to the velvet room.

  • konsama

Seriously hyped for this, i hope they won’t take long to release on the west. Strange to have P3P and P4G in vita and soon PQ on 3DS lol.

  • Guest

For a first playthrough I am going with Minato,Mitsuru,Aigis,Chie, and Naoto :D I cant wait to see how that goes!

  • Kazekage Gaara

If Philemon is in this then maybe just maybe……oh I don’t know…maybe the appearance of the P1 and 2 characters?! D:

  • ChatKnight

So does this mean that the P3/4 protags can have two Personas of choice, but the other characters have to stick with their canon Personas as their main? I’m kinda confused.

    • benhofb

Nono, it just means that everyone can have multiple personas. That every party member (the MC and other characters included) may have other Personas that they are calling “Sub-Personas.” I am going to guess that you won’t be able to pick from the entire compendium of personas, but probably just a limited selection of fan-favorites.

  • Morningstar

I can see some of the characters being able to use their starting and evolved personae at once with this, Like Junpei with both Hermes and Tristmegistus.

  • Other characters aside from Yuu and Makoto getting other Persona sounds like homage to the original Persona and Persona duology gameplay-wise.

  • Other characters aside from Yuu and Makoto getting other Persona sounds like homage to the original Persona and Persona duology gameplay-wise.

  • It really saddens me that we can’t choose Minako instead of Minato :/

Oh well, I guess my party will just consist of just my favorite guy characters. Ken is a better support than Yukari imho, anyway, and I never use Yukiko because she has to be the most detestable character in he series.
My main attackers will probably be Kanji and Shinji.

    • Warren

Wow! If you think Yukiko is the most detestable character in the Persona series obviously you did not pay attention to the stories and characters or you played the game wrong.

      • Jero

As much as you don’t like her opinion there’s no way you can “play a game wrong” if she enjoyed it, then she played it right. Don’t be rude just because she doesn’t like yukiko.

        • Scissors

          *high five*

        • Skeptika Crediblus

What about if you jam the game in, say, a toaster, and then take that in one hand and a live chicken in the other, and whack them together? That’d be playing it wrong.

  • Arrngrim

Ultimate Party = Aigis, Mitsuru, Chie, Yukiko & Naoto. Win.

  • Snorlaxation

Is it just me, or does the battle system, where you’re having your team in specific positions, remind anyone else of P1’s style? Chess-like and what not.

Ranged attacks and attacks that cover certain spaces of damage. Not sure how i feel about that.

As far as the Wild card thing though, that didn’t exactly exist the same way in the older games. No single character, not Naoya/Tatsuya/Maya or any of their teammates, could use a Persona from every Arcana. It was more about teamwork and what Personas fit under their Arcana, or Arcana linked with theirs.

    • Jero

Well, the battle positions is just an Etrian Odyssey thing were you put physical fighters or damage dealers in the front and healers/mages in the back, because not all enemies can attack the back line so they’re less likely to be targeted.

  • Rafael Fijos

    NOW I’ll buy this!

  • xXDGFXx

No matter how many times I see this, I can only think that the Vita got the short end of the stick.

    • benhofb

Eh, I kind of feel that way as well, but I have no doubt that the Vita will see an eventual Persona 5 port someday. Plus it would probably be a lot more expensive to make an entirely new game for the Vita than to reuse the EO engine and make this for the 3DS.

    • DyLaN

      But the swag dancing.

  • Rake

They just took notes on Persona 2 with the Protagonists able to use their teammate’s persona, and other having an extra persona for more skills.

    Atlus, keep going!

  • Firion Hope

5 huh. Well Ill probably mostly be rolling with my Persona 3 crew, MC because hes the best, Yukari for healing, Aigis for buffs, Akihiko for debuffs. Not sure who else to include, maybe Naoto for light/dark coverage or Mitsutu for another attacker with some healing

  • JustThisOne

I wonder if this will be a slight nudge-nudge for the return of fully customizable parties in P5. They could bring back the compatibility thing too keep it from being too OP.

  • Kelohmello

My hope for this game is that it’s Persona 3/4 mixed with Etrian Odyssey and hyped up slightly on crack. …Sounds like I might not be too far off!

  • hng qtr

“Persona Q will allow you to set sub-Personas to the other characters. That way,
they’ll be able to use other skills that aren’t available through their
    main Personas”
That’s game is sounding more and more like a re-skin of Etrian Odyssey. But I wonder if these sub-Personas will be the Personas from other party members or we’ll be able to get new Personas and fuse them like a more traditional MegaTen.

  • FlobotingIt

I really hope that no matter which character you follow, you can name both of them… There’s just something that feels special to me about being able to name my own characters in SMT games!!
I fear the day when I play Persona Q and only one protagonist can be “Dick Lord”!

  • Xerain

Support characters in Back Row? Does this mean Rise is finally sort of playable?

  • KuroNathan

I’m still concerned that this game will delay the production of the next EO game. I want my Etrian Odyssey 5!

  • DragKudo

Now all they have to is bring back Party fusion spells and I’m buying four copies of this game, each from different regions..

  • OuchiGouchi

Off topic, but is it too much to ask for dual audio for this game?

  • 20?!? hmmm…P3 MC, Yukari, Junpei, Akihiko, Misturu, Shinji, Ken, Aigis, Koromaru, P4 MC, Yosuke, Chie, Yukari, Teddy, Kanji, Naoto, + the two new characters…isnt that only 18?

    • Tenabrus

maybe Fuuka and Rise? they did say support along with ranged and healers would be in the back part of your party during combat so maybe they are counting them in.

      • i feel like such an idiot for leaving them out…lol. that makes a lot more sense…thanks for that clarification!

    • DragKudo

technically only 17 guessing the three characters are either Velvet room siblings or fuuka and rise. rin and zen count as one.

Also you typed yukari twice. yukiko

  • I like Minato, too, but I hope Atlus still gives us a female protag option for 5 and that this isn’t a sign that they plan on forcing us to only be males. If we could be bisexual or gay males, I’d be fine with it, but I couldn’t even get through 4 firsthand because I just did not want to have to date any of the girls.

  • RazeXI

Hmm, boost mode sounds like it might make things abit too easy, might have to play this on hard mode at first for a challenge

  • Shuga Suenaga

i have a question about this game, will it be dungeon crawling? or will it be third person perspective like normal persona games?

    • hng qtr

It’s Etrian Odyssey: Persona edition. Battles will be in 3rd person though( which is completly irrelevant).

  • DyLaN
  • Notquitesure?

Who should i use from the persona 3 side.

    • Jero

      • Ace

        Akihiko best waifu.

  • orangeluigi

Whoa, this sounds so interesting this will be my first persona game! I never thought about buying a persona game until now so glad it’s on the 3ds!

  • RagingTiger44

You get a Wild Card. You get a wild card. EVERYONE GETS WILD CARDS!!!

  • Ace

    It’s cumshitting time!
