Arale-Chan Looks Cute, But She Can Still Kick Goku’s Butt

By Spencer . February 27, 2014 . 10:58pm

Goku is about to face his biggest challenge yet… and no it isn’t Naruto. In this J-Stars Victory Vs. video Arale-chan from Dr. Slump uses Goku as a training dummy. Both characters were created by Akira Toriyama which makes Arale-chan kind of like Goku’s distant older cousin.

Players will also be able to set up a dual between Kenshin and Momotaro Tsurugi from Be A Man! Samurai School. Seiya is also a playable character in J-Stars Victory Vs. too. Bandai Namco will release the game in Japan on March 19 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

I want this game soooooo bad Dood >v<

It’s really mind-boggling how you can play fighting games with flippers, let alone holding anything!

      • Kitestwinblades

Don’t forget those peg-legs. Dashing, jumping, and even dancing! Prinnies are amazing!

  • andref

I have a bad feeling there is little chance of a release outside of japan same as the jump ultimate stars games for the DS. Looks like I may have to import

    • Namuro

At least it’s a pretty straight-forward beat ‘em up kind of game, unlike Jump Ultimate Stars with all the koma-assembly and such. It should be all right to play with minimal knowledge of Japanese.

Besides, we all know that someone will make a translation guide and faqs after the game comes out.

      • katamari damacy

The Koma assembly combined with the Smash Bros style created a truly unique game. A standard beat em up wouldn’t have done Jump justice.
Also you could readily experiment with assist komas in the training mode. Jump Ultimate Stars was original and creative, something this new title lacks unfortunately.

        • Namuro

I love Jump Super, and Jump Ultimate to death. The koma system is great; it’s fun to collect them, the abilities from these komas allow for so much customization, and the best part is, of course, when you unlock them. You’re like “Yeah, I know my stuff.” LOL

Look at the copyright screen at the end of any of the trailers for this game. There’s a ENTIRE screen worth of copyright. If it’s that bad in Japan usually the same copyright holder holds both the anime and manga rights, imagine how convoluted it would be in America where anime and manga right holders are different companies.

I’m the same way. I love dr slump. So funny.

Apparently my friend found out about this game a couple of days ago, and cried that it’s only in Japan (for now). However, I have convinced him to go halfsies with me on a JP PSN card so that we can experience it. Yuusuke convinced me (and him), but Arale seals the deal.

I just hope that trademark Bamco Europe filed will mean this game releasing overseas. I hope by some licensing miracle that it will.

      • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

        If EU or NA get it, I’ll be happy. At least it’ll be in English, either way. ;u;

        • hazelnut1112

Sure hope so as well. Just glad internet browsers work everywhere now because I remember being in front of a computer screen for JUS.

Time Travel fixes everything, for there’s no proof that she died in Xenogears.

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I thought they were talking about Cross, but that’s a funny cameo.

  • WolfDuo

I was planning on pre-ordering this. But I’d say my only issues are, not understanding the storymore. And more importantly, knowing the card buff system.

Having the patience to wait for a correct translation to the card system…Well, if ones ever made.

  • Minos

I wonder if Seiya will be as broken as he was on the previous game…

He was like Metaknight on steroids.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Arale…God.. Help anyone who has to fight her….they will die if not by her hands but her adorableness

  • fairysun

Woahh Arale and Momotaro, this game just move up from “must-buy” “definitely must-buy”.

Good-hearted gamers out there, please provide a translation of menu for this.

  • Gattai

Now I hope they make a vid about the antagonist instead would be interesting to see what “abilities” they have in the game ^^

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

This game will be our new JUS, since Japan’s Nintendo WFC will die soon.

  • hawk222

    Aw, no “poop-on-a-stick” attack? I’m a little disappointed…

  • http://playstationallstars.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_All-Stars_Wiki Sackchief

Arale is technically stronger than Goku since she can lift 100 tons easily and Goku has trouble with that much in base form.

    • dizzyb230 .

Goku was never shown struggling with 100 tons. If you’re referring to his training with King Kai, then I’m pretty sure that would equate to 400 Earth tons due to the gravity there.

      • http://playstationallstars.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_All-Stars_Wiki Sackchief

Well, it was Grand Kai’s planet he was training on, not King Kai’s. We don’t know what kind of gravity they have there.

        • dizzyb230 .

Fact remains it wasn’t Earth tons, so you shouldn’t judge him by Earth standards.

Akira Toriyama’s serious works always needed more strong female characters. And I don’t mean strong in terms of characterization, I mean in terms of physical strength, though that’s always nice, too.

Dr. Slump has always been my favourite work from Akira Toriyama. But I’ve always been disappointed by how macho and male focused the Dragon Ball Z franchise became. It seemed to become very focused on show muscular male characters becoming increasingly powerful. What’s wrong with female characters doing that, too?

And they added Androids, just like Arale. But they never became all that important. And they have boys of various ages and body types, relatively speaking, all muscular and strong and relatively important. Why not any girls? Why not Super Saiyan Pan? And why can’t she become as strong and muscular as her siblings?

Akira Toriyama has drawn muscular female characters in Dragon Quest games. And Akira Toriyama has no problem with drawing muscular children, many of Akira Toriyama’s child characters in action oriented entertainment are muscular. And Akira Toriyama clearly has no problems drawing male or female nudity of any sort, and his works contain loads of naked child characters, both male and female.

So I don’t see why not have a female power fantasy character. I always wish he would create one of them. I don’t see why she can’t be strong and have lots of transformations.

The gender representation is always rather disappointing in shounen action anime and manga. Not that it’s ever perfect everywhere. But male characters in shounen anime are almost always power fantasies, and female characters are almost always comic relief of some kind. Why can’t we have female power fantasy characters? One of the things I loved about Soul Eater is that its main character, Maka, is female. I’d love to see more “Shounen Jump” style action shounen have physically strong female protagonists.

One of the only reasons I can think of that someone might think this might not be a great idea is thinking that a “female audience doesn’t want power fantasy characters” or that “a male audience won’t relate to a female protagonist”, or “that a female character who is as strong as the male characters who doesn’t have huge muscles would be unrealistic” or “that drawing a female character with the huge muscles that the male characters have would alienate people because it wouldn’t be sexy”.

But all of that seems silly. Female protagonists need to become more common. And who cares what most people find sexy? Action protagonists aren’t meant to be sexy. Male action protagonists with lots of muscles aren’t exactly sexy, either. A female character can exist without being sexy to the status quo. And there’s always a minority of people who find extremely muscular male or female characters sexy, anyway.

And girls can be as interested in action oriented entertainment as boys. There’s no reason not to promote that. Plenty of girls want action shows about them, but don’t get any. And boys need to get used to being able to identify with female protagonists.

Anyway, this just all kind of brought to mind a lot of missed opportunities and what I always wished would happen.

Dr. Slump is great! My favourite Akira Toriyama work! I wish that Dr. Slump would get more love and support in the West.
