Angel Beats! 1st Beat Will Contain Extra Scenes That Weren’t In The Anime

By Eugene . March 3, 2014 . 2:03pm

For those lamenting the only-13-episode anime series for Angel Beats!, take heart. The upcoming PC visual novel Angel Beats! 1st Beat will feature additional scenes not seen in the series before. The latest drip of CG pieces showcases a meeting between main character Yuzuru Otonashi and Girls Dead Monster player Yui.

It happens that Otonashi will stumble across some of Yui’s special, intensive trainings  (though why she’s doing so is “a secret”). Exhausted after it, she lets Otonashi carry her back to the dormitory, improving their trust towards each other.

You’ll also be come across Masami Iwasawa as she chases butterflies in a field, something you’d almost never see from the usually quiet lady. Below, you can also see a shot of Yuri Nakamura as she ponders how she’s led everyone so far. The scene comes just before they have to climb out of the pit they’ve fallen into, apparently.

Finally, we’ve also got a couple of creepy shots below of Ayato Naoi, cradling Yuri and whispering to her: “I’ll show you a good dream that will release you of your regrets from life…”

Angel Beats! 1st Beat will have multiple endings and there are six “beats” planned for the series. Angel Beats! 1st Beat is planned for a 2014 release on PC.

That’s good to know since the anime was rushed and while it did have its moments and great animation…well… it wasn’t THAT great.

      more like overrated

      • Zer0faith

Don’t get me wrong it was good just not great. Much of the blame lies with condensing it to 13 eps. Some characters stood out and some were never fleshed out. Hopefully this VN will fix that.

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

“oh hey, we have more than 15 characters, and despite the theme being get regret of your sad past, we’ll only give about 5 of them actual backstory. Let the manga and VN show the rest of them. Just look at most of them disappears one by one offscreen by the time the random shadow comes up without you even really care much for them unless you overrate this anime as a whole”

It’s a shame the anime ended up how it did. I’m still interested on the VN though.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

Somebody needed to say it. I was honestly very disappointed by Angel Beats. For all the hype it got, it was rushed and executed poorly…

    • Renaldi Saputra

what’s been really great with just 12-13 episodes?
There has been no anime with 12-13 episodes that had satisfied me enough

      • M’iau M’iaut

Theoretically, a good story in 13 eps. SHOULD be possible. That’s roughly 6 hours, the same amount of time many classic OAVs (Tenchi, El Hazard) had. It is just those writers seemed to understand you had to intro your characters and get on with the story quickly. Too many of these little series don’t start doing a damn thing until episode 4. Then it is too late.

Twenty-six was a nice sweet spot for several rounds of rising and falling action throughout the tale. Even those shows that have multiple ‘seasons’ are often telling two thirteen episode stories, and thus not able to take advantage of the additional time.

        • Renaldi Saputra

i prefer a 50 episodes anime, they don’t have to be so slow and don’t have to be so fast.. And usually a 50 episodes anime had less to no fillers, and more character moments

yeah, a good story with 13 episodes should be possible, at the risk of the characters being shallowed

          • M’iau M’iaut

Are we speaking of say a Maison Ikkoku, KOR or Marmalade Boy? Those certainly are the classics I think of in that full year length.

          • Renaldi Saputra

I didn’t know that. I give a better example: Bakegyamon, Digimon series (except 02 bcos plotholes and xros wars), and Legendz (maybe you don’t know this one). Those series have about 50-51 episodes

I watched Ima Soko ni Iru Boku (Now and Here, Then and There). Story is good, but lack of characters and kind of fast. It just ended that way.. 13 episodes

          • M’iau M’iaut

Most of my mentions are more in the 50+ eps. class — I think MI ended up darn near a hundred. But the idea still applies, extensive length shows done well.

          • Renaldi Saputra

Usually anime with more than 50 episodes (say, 7 cours ++, even hundreds episodes) had such some annoying fillers (means not enjoyable) or too slow, I watched Inuyasha, it had around 170 episodes, I dropped it on the midway, it’s just too slow. Same goes to.. say.. Yugi-oh series.

Thus 4 cour ( 1 cour means 12 episodes or 1 season. 4 cour means 48 episodes or 4 seasons or a full one year) or 50 episodes are perfect number for me

        Madoka Magica? No? Just saying…

        • Renaldi Saputra

I’m tired of a bunch of ppl said Madoka Magica. C’mon it’s just a decontruction and darker theme of magical girl. What’s good with just 12-13 episodes?

Hoping for fan translate to try it out…

If this could make it to the states but due to the fact that there are going to be many different beats i doubt it…. :/

  • 永次

    Waiting for VITA version.

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Oh god, I wish these visual novels would get translated and released over seas. *cries in a corner*

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s PC game, obviously there will be someone who willingly make a fan translate

      • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

For games as good as these? Unfortunately, fan translations just aren’t good enough…

        • Renaldi Saputra

as good as these? I don’t know whether it’s good or not. But the licensing is so big

          • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

They may not be the best, but Key/Visual Art’s stories are some of the most touching stories I’ve ever watched/read. I would do anything for more than just the anime’s in English. So basically, I’m a big fan who would call these games better than they might be.

          • Renaldi Saputra

well, a fan will usually say their favorite games are good. But since this far, I didn’t get hooked by key’s stories, they were mostly focused on romance..

I’m the type who is null of romance or maybe I say romance (between boys and girls) are annoying

  • mojack411

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I really didn’t think the anime felt rushed at all. A sad past isn’t something that people typically want to share, and Otonashi going around and hearing everyones’ problems just would’ve felt way too unnatural. Doing so would’ve also fallen into a predictable pattern and part of why I loved Angel Beats was that it never fell into a pattern. They got the most important characters’ backstories and that’s what mattered most. But everyone has their opinions, and people are certainly entitled to thinking the opposite of me.

    • Firion Hope

1000x this. Im excited for this and I plan to read the Manga that takes place before the main series, but I like how the series left up some stuff to the viewers imagination and never fell into a pattern. I hate the notion that everything needs to be spelled out clearly always

  • Servant BerserCAR

    Talking about beats:

    • Demonspartanx20

this shit had me dying lmao

  • Firion Hope

Im really glad to have more AB type stuff, I was satisfied with the conclusion but it would be fun to be able to change some things and maybe have a little more romance in it

  • Alexandra Cordes

Just tell me that Otonashi cannot romance Yui. That would kill me, since the anime made it crystal clear there was a thing between Yui and Hinata.
I’m not going to comment on the prequel light novel… >:I

    • Guest

Agreed! Hinata and Yui became my favorite couple in the story,so much so I hope they make it you play as Hinata when going for the Yui route

      • Alexandra Cordes

Agreed! But these CGs make me worried, since Otonashi is definitely taking part in all of the activities on-screen.
Like, him giving Yui a piggy-back ride and “building their trust.”
Yes, that could be a friend thing AND IT HAD BETTER… but I feel like we won’t be playing as Hinata for it.
Hopefully they can circumvent this by having Hinata pop in at the last second and taking Yui away romantically (like in the anime) but… damn, I’d feel cheated of all the possible interactions between the two and deepening of their relationship of which we’d miss out on.
