Kara no Shoujo Studio Working On A New Mystery Visual Novel

By Sato . March 3, 2014 . 12:32pm

Innocent Grey, the studio known for making the Kara no Shoujo games, are working on a new visual novel by the name of Flowers. The story is about an anti-social girl who enters an academy where communication and friendship are forced upon the students for a better future.

Here’s an introduction to the game from its official website:

Surrounded by immense walls in the middle of a forest, lies the Saint Angraecum Academy. Suoh Shirahane, a girl with a wounded heart, enrolls in the academy that is teeming with young beauties.

Due to certain reasons, this young girl has always remained indoors, and has never been touched by anyone outside of her family. She’s not the most social person, but her new school’s experiment, called “Amity,” will require her to make friends with others, as the program’s goal is to optimize the ability of communication.

The “friends” provided by the academy, and a faint feeling of love towards them. In the midst of a quiet academy life, the strange disappearance of an academy student occurs…

What will the young girls see in the academy? What will they find there?

Before you start imagining dismembered limbs and gore, one should point out that Flowers is an all-ages game. It looks like a change of pace for Innocent Grey, but given the studio’s portfolio, there’s probably more to see here than meets the eye, especially since the game is described as a mystery title.

Suoh Shirahane:

Suoh is a timid girl who doesn’t talk much, and she can be a little bit of a worrywart at times. Prior to enrolling in the academy, she lived with her grandfather, where she was homeschooled, so she never had much of an opportunity to interact with others.

It’s not that she doesn’t like people, as she, more than anyone, would love to make friends. However, her shy nature gets the best of her and she can get a little too nervous when approaching others.

Her best friends were books and movies, so she has a habit of reciting quotes from films and novels in the middle of conversations. Her “Amity” partners are Mayuri and Rikka.

Mayuri Kousaka:

Mayuri is a forward-looking girl with an optimistic personality. She is loved by everyone around her in class because of her bright personality. She’s a hard worker, and whenever she sets her mind to something, she does a great job at it.

She decided to enroll in the academy of her own will, due to a certain problem she had. While she is quite the sociable girl, she’s careful not to let her problems be seen by others, even her Amity friends.

Rikka Hanabishi:

Rikka is a calm and earnest young girl who likes to take care of those around her. She is considered the mother-like figure of the class, not only because she’s kind and gentle, because she’s also strict when needed. Mayuri is the central figure of the class, but Rikka is at the same level in terms of respect and influence.

Rikka got the top place in the university’s entrance exams, and thanks to her personality and how she actively helps her classmates, she has been designated as the class chairwoman. She prides herself in being a reliable person with high expectations, and works hard to continue taking the initiative.

Flowers will be released for PC on April 18th in Japan.

I found Kara no Shoujo to be a fine VN indeed. And I recognize the art style in the pictures here. All in all, I’m getting just a little bit excited. Let’s hope for a translation within a year… or two… or three. Might as well learn Japanese at this point. :D

  • Laith Rem

So this looks quite gay. And it’s goreless (the only reason I did not play Kara) to boot. And it’s a mystery!

    Seems cool.

  • Prinnydoom

YURI!!!! Sorry……ahem. Um yeah this looks…..interesting…….for research.

    • Kotori Itsuka

      No, Don’t don’t hold back…..YUUUUUUURIII!!!!! I’m batman

      • Paulette

It’s not really my thing, but not every Yuri game/manga/anything are this cute !

        • Kotori Itsuka

          sakura trick.

  • konsama

Aside of that pic and the thumbnail for…obvious reasons. I really like the art style, and the story sounds interesting.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

    will sell because yuri.
the game seems pretty meh at this point. I will wait and see

    • Wtv

Where people get the idea that yuri sells?

Hell, there is almost no VN yuri yet.
When talking about VNs, harem sells, incest sells, yaoi sells, rape sells, gore sells. Yuri…not that much.

      • Ni ~Algidus~

If it don’t sell. it sure as heck bring sales. specially in today otaku culture which they like to slap yuri in everything that they can and people just don’t shut up if their isn’t a yuri couple in series X

        • raitouniverse

I agree with wtv, yuri is a rather niche genre. It doesn’t bring as many sales as people might assume. I don’t think this is being made because it will sell, or rather, the decision for this game to have yuri undertones doesn’t seem malicious.

But I can see where you’re coming from, I mean girls kissing, should be all the rage with guys, eh? That rarely is the case, it seems.

          • Wtv

If they are lesbian, they can’t be waifus.

        • Fiora

Yuri shipteasing sells, but actual yuri not so much. Guys find two girls together attractive, but the instant it goes far enough that they realize they can’t be part of it, they tend to lose sexual interest. This is why “light yuri” is so ubiquitous in seinen anime and manga, but actual lesbians are so incredibly rare. Despite the stereotype, major yuri publications like Yuri-hime historically have a majority female audience.

          • raitouniverse

Which is intriguing to witness, considering that the same could not be said about yaoi. Quite a shame, really, or maybe for the better? Hard to say.

          • Loli Summoner

“Guys find two girls together attractive, but the instant it goes far enough that they realize they can’t be part of it, they tend to lose sexual interest.”

Ummm…who you are you speaking for….It’s obvious you’re not a dude XD

          • Shippoyasha

Well, I’m not sure it really stops where the attraction ends though. Sakura Trick for example, goes the full yard with the Yuri and otaku are rather refreshed by the full on sexual nature of it on display instead of keeping up the ‘pretty ladies hanging out with eachother’ kind of vanilla, super safe yuri.

I definitely agree that yuri definitely has a rather huge female demographic too. If I had to stab at the dark, I would wager popular yuri content has a pretty good distribution between male and female fans. Which is why more VNs should not shy away from pure yuri. There definitely is a fanbase of it, I’m sure of it.

        • wererat42

If what I’ve heard is correct, the director of Innocent Grey is a fan of yuri so it could be a pet project.

      • Loli Summoner

“harem sells, incest sells, yaoi sells, rape sells, gore sells. Yuri…not that much.” Japan~

      • Kumiko Akimoto

We have a few yuri vns over and there are some being fan translated that. I think that yuri is niche genre but so is yaoi and otome, if you go to vn database those have the smallest search as far as overall genre goes. but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t sell well considering vns are even nicher here then they are in japan.

    • Anewme…Again

Pure Yuri VN rarely sell a lot.
Sono hanabira is probably the most popular VN yuri franchise and most of the times it only sell a few thousands copies.

      • Kornelious

Wow, Sono hanabira is that popular? :D………………Not that I know what it is or anything (^_^;)
But heck, I’d buy it if it was in english :)

        • Anewme…Again

Sono hanabira is a pure Yuri VN. Each VN of the serie focus on 1 couple, well that changed after the 11th VN of the serie.
They are short most of the times, most can be completed under 5 hours and have lot of sex.
There’s english patch for the first 8 of the serie with 2 more patch coming soon.
You can buy all the game of that serie on DLsite, i would give a link, but they are NSFW.
You just need to go to DLsite and search for Kissing the petal(english name).
The game are in japanese there, but with english patch you can play in english.
The patches are easy to find.

      • Loli Summoner

Ahh! I knew I’ve seen that name somewhere, I watched the Hentai of that XD

  • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

This sounds really bad to be honest. I was expecting something entirely different after reading the headline.

  • “…There’s probably more to see here than meets the eye,…”
By the looks of the image above, I’d say so!

Looks pretty, but I can’t help but think, there is a lot of room in those sleeves!

  • icup ✔️

the purest form of love is yuri.

    • Kayriss Wins

      Yuri-ism’s slogan lol.

    • Kotori Itsuka

  • Hoping Manga Gamer picks this one up someday.

  • Weskalia .

They even have Kaori Nazuka voicing the main character. Hmm, didn’t think the they could hire her and even using her real name. I love KnS and Caucacus so this colors me interested.

  • Jesse

Seems they uploaded the game’s opening a little bit ago:

  • Anesia Hunter

Yuri really? >.< Yes? No? (Please be yes. D: )

  • John Hayabusa

Okay, I think I will hold my breath before saying this is a yuri game and until Innocent Grey confirms it is (even though it looks very likely). If it is, I hope it will go well enough to be localized to other regions. Yuri games are like the rarest kind of games in the world.

EDIT: I watched the OP for this game and it IS a yuri game. Hopefully, we can support this game.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

It’s probably tragic yuri, with a lot of yuri sex but also a lot of them end dying.

  • Firion Hope

Im uh… liking the looks of this

  • John Hayabusa

You put a sticky tag on this yuri game? Nice.

  • Audie Bakerson

  • Roberto

    now we talking

  • shuyai

hmmm somehow i have the feeling the four eye Rikka Hanabishi will be brutaly bullied and killed in the game

  • NeptuniasBeard

Pffft! I don’t want to spend money just to see some GIRLS almost kiss. Give me some bishies making out and my hand will be all over that… game

  • Zypharium

No, thank you. This will be the first visual novel from Innocent Grey that I did not read. I really hate yuri, I cannot seem to like girls love. The Artwork is really great, as always if I may add. The Opening is not really noteworthy, which is a huge disappointment. Also I’m more interested in visual novels like Kara no Shoujo. Bad Endings are the best, I am tired of happy endings.

    • same here..I will skip this too since I can’t stand yuri. Can’t wait for KNS2 from mangagamer though

    • Shippoyasha

I think that’s a tad unfair to write it off just because it’s Yuri. There’s been some good mystery VNs with yuri overtones before. So it’s not something that is impossible to pull off. But if yuri is too much for some people to take, then too bad I suppose.

    • Yuri is the purest form of love.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    Inspired by Class-S, I see.

  • DyLaN

May I know who’s the artist for this, japanese readers? This artist style is pretty good.

And I share my sentiments with Shippo. Shin Sekai Yori have both yaoi and yuri elements in it but it still turn out to be excellent.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

It’s the same artist Miki Sugina

      • DyLaN

The art style is a bit different frm my memory of KnS ^_^; Improvement in art style?

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Possibly or unless they got an artist to copy her style.

  • TheExile285

So…. who else clicked because of the thumbnail?

    I’ll see myself out

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Wait, it’s a yuri mystery game by Innocent Grey? Prepare to get butchered after the ero scenes.

Wait.. it’s all ages? That’s quite a switch, I wonder how good it’s going to be considering how unrestrained their VN’s are (Kara No Shoujo and Cartagra are fucking harsh).

  • Alexandra Cordes

    I am so in.
