Sony Computer Entertainment announced six million PS4s have been shipped globally as of March 2, 2014. This figure includes the 370,000 consoles sold through when the system launched in Japan on February 22.

Sony states PS4 software sales are at 13.7 units shipped to stores and digital downloads as of March 2. This figure includes Japanese games like Yakuza: Restoration and indie games like Don’t Starve: Console Edition.

PS4 exclusive Infamous: Second Son is scheduled for release later this month along with the multiplatform Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. If your purchase a PS4 in Japan along with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes you’ll get the shopping bag pictured above.

I wonder about the ratio of digital/retail sales.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Ahh, so now Sony are the 8th gen leaders (ignoring 3DS, of course). Congrats Sony, now if only you had some games I was interested in… Oh well, they’ll come eventually. In the meantime, I’ll just stick with my kickass PS3

    • Tonton Ramos

Same can be said to WiiU yet some people underestimated the hardware and not realizing how great the games are…

      • NeptuniasBeard

Certainly. I own a WiiU and have 6 games for it. I personally care very little for specs, I see game systems as merely a means of being able to play more games. Which is why it baffles me why people bag on a system just for not having the best graphics, or only doing 720p, or whatever else the kids are bickering about these days

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

People don’t rag on the Wii U because of its hardware, its because it has no games, like X1 and PS4. There is nothing special about Wii U that makes people want to buy one. There are no must have titles. I am surprised PS4 has sold this well with no games. My PS4 is a glorified Netflix streaming device. The fact remains that the Wii U has been out for almost a year and a half, and still has no games that people must buy the system for. Most of the games are ports, and the exclusives are Mario and Zelda.
3DS is Nintendo’s bread winner, even Nintendo has come to accept this.

          • Serge

“its because it has no games, like X1 and PS4″

            Give this guy a medal.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Hard to tell if you’re being sarcastic since Disqus hides downvotes now. I can’t tell if people agree or disagree. But I don’t care, it’s a mere fact based on observation and owning a Wii U and PS4. It’s also why sales aren’t even more amazing. I know umpteen people that are holding off on all next gen until games come out, including Wii U. I bought it for MH3U, but now I have nothing to play on it after a nice 400 hours.

          • ronin4life

An yet, it still has more games than Ps4, Costs less and has more features at reduced costs.

Soooo…. HOW is the difference THIS large? It is unnaturally so.

          • NeptuniasBeard

Well, the second half of my post was a reference for all systems in a way. Though I can kinda see how you would think I was only talking about WiiU. And the “no games” thing is subjective. What may be a system with no games for you, is the perfect system for somebody somewhere. And vice versa. I have a crapton of 3DS games, but there are people that for whatever reason, see nothing interesting in the handheld. Similar thing with the WiiU. A lot of people say it has nothing worth playing, but I have several games that I, for whatever reason, felt were worth the price of admission.

And FYI: People DO rag on Nintendo because of their hardware. Do you even know how to internet brah?

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Well I ignore the general populous of trolling japery.
But if there were games that weren’t just rehashes with a fresh coat of paint, people would indeed buy more Wii U and it’s games. Can’t argue with the numbers.

      • MrRobbyM

I think people “underestimate” it since Nintendo are making sequels to games that are too much like the previous game. Pikmin 3, DK:TF and WW HD is a straight up remake. The only exception is 3D World, which I played and didn’t like all that much. Not saying any of those are bad, but to someone just looking at a trailer or some gameplay videos, they just looks like HD versions of games they already made.

Sure there are third party exclusive titles but those appeal to a much more niche audience.

        • Satori Satya

Is this yet another “Nintendo always does sequels to their IP’s” routine?

          Everyone does that.

          garyoldmaneveryone.gif

          • MrRobbyM

I didn’t say anything like that. I simply said Nintendo’s Wii U games besides 3D World are too similar to their predecessors. On top of Pikmin and DK being among Nintendo’s less popular series and Wind Waker HD being a remake.

Read my comment again instead of taking everything offensively like the internet trained you to do. This isn’t 4chan. Nintendo games are always quality but if you want to compare, let’s compare.

Uncharted games are cinematic games with a continuing storyline, much like Killzone but instead a FPS. GT is a sim type game.

          • Satori Satya

Calm down, dude. Cut down on the redbull.

I understood that you were being superficial about how the games look. They look similar. But that’s the thing about sequels.

And every new console has them. There is nothing new about what you said. But the thing is, its not a problem that is exclusive to the Wii U. Nor is that why its under-performing.

          • ronin4life

I never really considered the cinematic nature to seperate those series entries from one another in that way.

I kind of think that is a stretch.

  • Somebodyissilent

    And I helped.

    • Satori Satya

      You and KNACK did.

      System seller extraordinaire.

      • Somebodyissilent

It’s the Demon Souls of platformers.

  • Tonton Ramos

    Poor WiiU… :(

    • Domii

What does this have to do with the WiiU?

      • Tonton Ramos

PS4 has surpassed the WiiU (as much as I love Sony I’m worried about the WiiU)

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

All we have is shipped numbers from last year which was 5.86 million.

        • Guest

Wii U numbers are Nintendo’s problem, PS4 great sales would have happened regardless of its situation.

    • Yan Zhao

Wii U sales will pick up once the new Smash Bros comes out. A new Zelda would help too but Im looking forward to Hyrule Warriors lol.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Smash Bros will likely sell more on 3DS.

        • Yan Zhao

It’s a game that’s meant to be played with others, I doubt it’d be smooth with the 3DS’s wifi. The full experience would be on local multiplayer on the Wii U. As I’m sure tournaments in the Smash community will be on the Wii U as well.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    Greatness awaits.

  • Göran Isacson

Guess Sony is taking the lead, then. Now I’m just curious if whether they will sell much more when they start dropping real must-buy titles, or if the people buying the console now are going to be THE sales it gets, that everyone who wants one will have already picked it up by now.

    • Guest

Yes, that’s why in Sony’s schedule there has to be a plan to attract “casuals”. Something á la Move, maybe that Oculus Rift thing they are planning to unveil.

  • Domii

Congrats Sony. I must say I can’t really explain how in the world Sony is moving so many PS4s with barely any must have games out. Amazing none the less.

    • Anime10121

Hype, anticipation, and a better MGS experience are what got me…

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Man, y’all better not get pissed and holler at Sony for being suckered into their system.

Badger them for the problem they have with not telling the truth. http://www.craveonline.com/gaming/articles/653711-killzone-shadow-fall-multiplayer-wasnt-1080p-but-it-looked-outstanding-anyway

        • Anime10121

Not a big enough graphics whore to care about the differences (plus, I dont even like Killzone, so it doesnt effect me), I just want good games, and I will get those, so I wasn’t “suckered” into anything. Never yet gone into a Playstation console and came out disappointed…

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Killzone’s irrelevant.
Just saying if you’re gonna get mad at sony get mad at them for saying they’ll do one thing and doing another. Or not keeping to their word

Also the PS3 version of MGS3 has more clouds. The graphics hold up pretty well.
So I dont get why you bought it for MGS when MGS wont be out till late 2015 early 2016.

          • ShawnKSmith24

That PS4 screenshot of Ground Zeroes has no clouds because it is the only version of the game with dynamic weather pattern changes. You can look up the quote from Kojima if you want. :P

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Yeah I know. I also think the sky looks like clay in that version. Its got that weird blue color

  • Lemski07

Im still on hold since no title yet hold interest for me, since I got a i7 pc,xbox360,3ds,psv. and a truckload of backlog games. -_-

    • hazelnut1112

It be best for you to just keep it as is. Maybe wait until next year.

      • Lemski07

I hope I could get a higher paying job next year too to afford my pleasures in life. so I could get an xbone too maybe?!

        • hazelnut1112

If you have a good PC then there really is no reason to get an Xbone. PC so far is the best choice since majority of games that were console exclusive will make their way on PC now since it will be easy to port. PC, PS4 and Xbone all run on the same x86 architecture.

  • hazelnut1112

That is cool and all but where are the games Sony?
You promised us games and we all we have are just multiplats.
Don’t you dare say “please understand” that’s Nintendo’s line.

    • Rayshawn Davis

      -Killzone
      -Knack
      ——————————————
      -Infamous Second Son
      -The Order 1886
      -Mobile Suit Gundam PS4 Title
      -Rime
      -Shadow of the Beast
      -Deep Down
      -Uncharted PS4
      -DriverClub

Sony has games that aren’t multi-plat. You just have to wait and be patient for the others to join the field. And there’s also the PS4 Exclusive being developed by Team Ninja. And with Sony’s new exclusive game studio in Londom developing on another.title, that just adds onto the pile.

The PS4 still needs a bit more stretching time, but there are still exclusive games within their cards.

      • hazelnut1112

That is a good list, and only then when it has a strong library is when I will consider purchasing one maybe.

        PS. You forgot Lily Bergamo

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

None of which are out. System came out in November.
And Killzone and Knack hardly sell to anyone as a system seller.

        -Infamous Second Son
        -The Order 1886
        -Mobile Suit Gundam PS4 Title
        -Rime
        -Shadow of the Beast
        -Deep Down
        -Uncharted PS4
        -DriverClub

        • Rayshawn Davis

That doesn’t change anything, Hazelnut was saying that the Sony didn’t have any exclusives/single-platform games. I provided him with a list, thus makes my point still valid. Sony still have exclusives in their cards, doesn’t matter if they aren’t out yet.

Also Infamous Second Son comes out this month, and Deep Down will be released this year. (Not sure about 1886, it’s been rumored for this year, but I kinda doubt it could be released this year. Hopefully I’m wrong)

    • MrRobbyM

It’s still too early to be asking for first party games this early. Infamous is out soon and Knack(no matter if it’s good or not) and Killzone are already out. Some other games are bound to make it out this year too.

  • MaximDualBlade

Come on guys, don’t be like this. This console is selling well and it has no games of interest to me and apparently to you at the moment. What’s the big deal? You know that it will have great games in the future.

If you dislike it, don’t buy it, but don’t bring the name of the competition here, or other unecessary stuff that could go into a flame comment thing

Personal off topic: Especially if you are into Jrpg stuff, you are more than assured to have tons of games of the genre on the ps4. Oh and don’t forget Rime! What happened to that game? I want to see more of it, it looked very calming

    • Ozymandias

i’m just hoping that they will have persona 5 for ps4

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        Nah.

        This is Atlus, remember?

      • MaximDualBlade

better not buy one if that’s your expectation

      • MrRobbyM

A Vita version is more likely than a PS4 version. Persona is big but it’s not a system seller outside of Japan. That’s why it’s being made for PS3 this late into its lifespan.

        • Ozymandias

now a vita would be awesomer.

      • otakumike

look forward to Persona 6 on ps4 a year after ps5 launches.

      • Arcana Drill

this is atlus, they put two games in ps2 after ps3 was launched, (2008 and 2009 if i aint wrong) and even now they arent playable on ps3… i wouldnt count on it.

  • makubexnas

    “insert it prints money meme”

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Nah. The software sales are not so good.

The PS3′s sales too a sharp hit with the release of PS4. And the PS4′s only sold 13million pieces of software..

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY20NPp1yjQ#t=122

    • Lucky Dan

That would hold true if the 1st party games done so well like Nintendo where they would of made a shit ton of money.

Not so much for the PS4 they make like 10 bucks a console and the big sells are Activision, EA and Ubisoft which they would charge next to nothing to get the respective game on their system, since THEY are the ones who are selling it, this isn’t only held account to Sony, Xbone is having the same problem as well !!!

Probably replacing the men with AMD leaders, Bobby Kotick, CEO of EA and Ubisoft and that picture would be definitely in the right field :)

    • Guest

      Does that applies?
I think they still sell units at loss and isn’t the attach rate kinda low?

  • Enzo

I’ll wait for Gen 2 PS4 and potential Killer Apps

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Marimo-Head 海賊狩りのゾロ Roronoa Zoro

Well done Sony. After I get to play FF X | X-2 HD & KH 2.5 HD on PS3 I’ll be buying my PS4 too.

Hope new awesome games will be out by then too. Let’s not forget FF XV & KH 3.

    • Ozymandias

Persona 5 not on your waiting list?

  • Ozymandias

6 million units? I bet that the Kinect didn’t see that one coming.

  • MrRobbyM

Good news for Sony and me. Software sales aren’t that strong but then again there aren’t many good games out for any of the systems except for the Wii U. Looking forward to Infamous but that’s about it. Deep Down and The Order are going to be a while and that’s not to mention FFXV and KH3..

  • Yan Zhao

The PS4 launch price was 399 but now everyone’s trying to sell them for 550+, its getting kind of ridiculous. When is Sony gona manufacture more PS4s to stabilize the prices?

    • MrRobbyM

They announced just recently said that they are shipping out a new batch soon.

      • Yan Zhao

        Good :3

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

6 million units in 5 months is impressive.

  • Your Face

I have a Wii U and enjoy it and the games that are unique to it, but the Nintendo fanboys who come into every post about the PS4′s sales and hijack the comments are really annoying.

    • Serge

The same can be said about the Vita owners in every 3DS post.

      • Arcana Drill

Or 3ds owners in Vita posts… both sides have a share of bad fans.

        • Serge

You’re probably right, but i always see more Vita owners complaining about 3DS games not being on Vita. Just go to any Siliconera’s post about Bravely Default, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Monster Hunter, Forbiden Magna, Rune Factory, Etrian Odisey, SMT4, etc.
The only Vita game where i’ve seen 3DS owners complaining about exclusives is on Danganrompa posts.
