Tokyo Majin Gakuen Director’s New Nintendo 3DS Game Sounds Pretty Great

By Sato . March 5, 2014 . 2:10am

Tokyo Majin Gakuen series director Shuuhou Imai recently revealed that he’ll be announcing a new Nintendo 3DS game. In his latest blog post, he reveals that the game is Hamatora: Look at Smoking World, which he’ll be making with Unchained Blades developers, FuRyu.

Imai mentions in his blog post that Hamatora won’t take place in a parallel world from Hamatora: The Animation or the manga version—it will actually take place in the same world, but will have a different story. He reassures readers that the game will be enjoyable to those who’ve yet to see the anime or read the manga.

Imai says he was inspired by the shared universe concept often seen in American comics, where works of different titles, for example the DC and Marvel Universe, can take place in the same world. That being said, there might be a possibility of seeing characters from the Tokyo Majin Gakuen series in Hamatora, but for the time being, the only thing we know that’s shared is the world between Hamatora’s anime and manga.

Hamatora: Look at Smoking World is set in a port town of Kobe, Japan, where the transfer student protagonist who suddenly has his special powers awakened participates in fights with other high school students.

The characters will all be original to the game, and Imai even got in touch with people from the Kobe film office and visited other parts of Kobe, which will be included in the game.

You’ll be seeing certain shopping districts modeled after real-life areas, which you’ll be able to see in stereoscopic 3D. That sounds a little bit games like Shin Megami Tensei or Akiba’s Trip that make an effort to model themselves after the real-life locales they take place in.

According to Imai, the battle system for the game won’t be anything like Tokyo Twilight Ghosthunters, but it’ll be closer to the Tokyo Majin Gakuen series, which uses a strategy RPG battle system.

Hamatora: Look at Smoking World will be released on July 17th, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS. Here’s a commercial for the game:

nice looking game, hope it’s good and of course….LOCALIZED

  • MitsukiIX

The art will be strong in this one… AAAAAARRRRRTTTT T_T

    i hope

    • DyLaN

We will have to see which timeline the game takes place.

  • DyLaN

So…. is the MC an innate Minimum holder or artificially awakened one?

So the anime/manga is set in Kobe? Interestingly, Kobe is also the setting for Z/X Ignition.

Maybe it will have more screen time for characters like Theo, Rei, Information Dealer, Koneko and Bar Dude?

On an unrelated note, what the deal with the CG tiger mascot lol.

    • Kaetsu

The Info Dealer/Broker should really be in the game since he shows up everywhere lol

  • Rolling Guy

    Kenka Bancho…

    • Hopefully less repetitive than Kenka Bancho. Considering that they’re working with a license that has potential for growth, it would be a pity to waste the opportunity to create an audience for future Hamatora games.

      • Kaetsu

Hamatora has lot’s of potential. It gives me a Persona and Durarara vibe which is definitely a good thing.

      • Rolling Guy

But I love Kenka Bancho. I wish Spike Chunsoft would make another one or at least someone would localize the latest one. Even a PSP version of KB2 Full Throttle would be awesome.

Yankii games are stuck to stupid mobage’s. There’s not much bosozoku games. The last shakotan/boso game with cars are from PS2. Last Dekotora was in Wii.

Japan’s most flamboyant and interesting culture is dying. It’s making me cry. :(

  • NTaiyokun

I’m curious, does the title translate to “Tokyo Demon School”?

    • Shane Guidaboni

Pretty much. Gakuen (学園) literally means “academy”.

      • NTaiyokun

It’s weird how much I’ve learned simply by watching anime and playing japanese games.

  • Most importantly can we save Art!!! Art Art for art thou Art

    • DyLaN

Well, its not AU so I doubt it.

  • kylehyde

This is easily one of the most ambitious projects I’ve seen, those seconds are more than enought makeme wish that Atlus, Xseed or Aksys localize this games as soon as possible

    • Serge

When was the last time we had an anime/manga related videogame?
That wasn’t Pokemon or Youkai Watch.

      • Quizler

One Piece: Romance Dawn came out like last month I think

        • Serge

          But… But… Ok, i got nothing.
          I also forget Inazuma Eleven.

      • DyLaN

There JoJo and the Naruto games, but those are Jump titles.

  • Pyrofrost

This has honestly given me no impressions yet. I just need to see more. I’m going to be optimistic for the time being; but yeah, not enough is here for me to have an opinion at this time.

  • I want more Tokyo Majin too.

  • Kaetsu

Looks like a Nice game maybe even a piece of Art! I just hope they localize it in time for my Birthday.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

The publishers better have the Moral to publish it in the Ratio of this year.

      • Kaetsu

I just hope it doesn’t take Three years.

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

  • KnifeAndFork

They forgot the word “the” in the title….

  • Nice Boat Quatro

I hope they include Nice in the story.

    • Kaetsu

It says it’ll use a brand new cast of characters although I’m sure some of the original cast will make an appearance.

  • Kazekage Gaara

“Hamatora: Look at Smoking World is set in a port town of Kobe, Japan, where the transfer student protagonist who suddenly has his special powers awakened participates in fights with other high school students.” Reminds me of Persona 3 o.o

    • Kaetsu

      Sort of…but without the demons.

  • Kaetsu

Upon further inspection I noticed that you can see Nice and Birthday talking in the trailer so that pretty much confirms that there involved. With those two in the game we can probably assume that both there partners(Murasaki and Ratio) will be in it as well.

EDIT: Ratio and Hajime are in the trailer
EDIT EDIT: Gameplay wise it looks like you’ll be able to roam around in a 3D environment. The combat looks like it has a combo system so it might work like the combat system in Xenogears or like an actual fighting game

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I guess the MC will join the detective group. I mean for some reason the game is a Hamatora.
