Here’s Another Look At Pier Solar HD, The HD Sega Genesis Inspired RPG

By Ishaan . March 6, 2014 . 3:58pm

Pier Solar HD, the upcoming remake of the 2010 Sega Genesis RPG, has made its way onto Steam Greenlight, the game’s developer, Watermelon Games, has announced. Additionally, a new trailer for the game is now available for viewing as well.

Pier Solar HD is an original game, and the HD version features an expanded story with new locations that weren’t in the original 2010 game. Upon release, the game will be available in English, French, Portuguese, German, Spanish and Japanese.

Pier Solar HD is in development for PC, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Android, Ouya, Linux, Mac and Dreamcast. A Nintendo 3DS version of the game is being considered as well, for a later point in time.

The Wii U version of Pier Solar HD is planned for released in April, according to a statement by Watermelon president Tulio Gonclaves last month. Tonclaves stated that the developer is putting the Wii U’s second screen to “good use”. Meanwhile, on Steam, the game is listed for a “Q2” release.

  • iamtehultimatepwnage .

nice, finally a new game for the dreamcast :)

    • NimbusStev

Ahaha that was the main thing that caught my attention too!

    • Hound

My Dreamcast is ready! I think..
I’ll have to see if one of them still reads disks properly.

  • Chaos_Knight

Oh PLEASE let there be a 3DS version.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Later. Much much much later

  • Aoshi00

So nostalgic.. but the char portraits are a bit weird, they’re all smiling and laughing, even when using comets on the monsters lol..

    • Prithivi

I was thinking the same xD

  • Ty Austin

I’m pretty excited since getting a copy of the original is an expensive and lengthy process.

My only issue is the eye punching contrast between the sprites and the backgrounds, portraits, hand drawn elements, etc.

    • It seems they’ll be letting you switch between the HD and 16-bit visuals and soundtracks on the fly if you want to, if that helps any. It is a bit weird to me that they upscaled everything except the sprites, but it does help them stand out from the environment pretty clearly.

      • Ty Austin

That’s good to hear. I’m all for them keeping the old school sprites, it just looks weird in conjunction with everything else being in HD.

  • doubleO7

Totally picking up the Dreamcast version. My favorite Sega console hasn’t gotten much use from me lately. Its time to fix that!

  • Earthjolly

Why no Vita version? Oh well for Dreamcast it is

  • Fox

You know, I’ve seen countless articles on this game, but not a one has bothered to mention WHY these guys made a Sega Genesis game in 2010, let alone whether or not that game was any good.

    • Steven Hunt

Why wouldn’t they? I would if I could!

      • Fox

Because it’s the single-most niche market you could possibly develop a game for this side of the N-Gage.

  • Masa

Cannot wait!!! Been a long time since i played an old style rpg, excited. :)
To anyone who has played this, is it a big game?

  • theBridgeburner

It’s a race between Pier Solar and Child of Light as to which will be the first rpg to grace my PS4.

  • LustEnvy

Dear god, yes. old school RPGs are EVERYTHING.

  • Anthony Birken

Dreamcast? Sorry ps3, but I’m going to play on 2 DREAMCAST…been a while.

  • Either someone spiked my water or I just read that this is coming out for the dreamcast.

    • Hound

Says so at the end of the trailer.

The original version had enhanced sound if the Mega-CD was connected..

    • pimpalicious

Dreamcast has been getting releases: Sturmwind, Gunlord, Fast Striker, etc.

  • Hound

“[…] Tulio Gonclaves last month. Tonclaves stated […]” Is “Tonclaves” a nickname of some sort?

  • Why “Sega Genesis Inspired”? Inspired? It *is* an HD version of a Genesis (Megadrive) game.

I was going to buy my HD version on Wii U, but might wait for Steam now I know it’s coming, because Nintendo still doesn’t have a proper download license ownership / accounts system.

  • Ric Vazquez

    Reminds me of Lufia

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

I hope the 3DS version comes to pass. I really miss RPGs with this art style and game play. So many RPGs are turning into action RPGs that the 2D style would be a welcome style.

  • Alexisonfire

It’s not really “Sega Genesis inspired” when it was released on the actual system. It’s just straight up a Sega Genesis game at that point.

  • Learii

    I love the music

  • Crimson_Cloud

I’m ashamed because I haven’t heard of this game before…
Played quite a few Sega Genesis games but missed this one. Was this on a Sega CD?

Anyway, it looks good. I’m a real sucker for oldies so I’ll buy this for sure. ˇˇ

    • daylightdies

Probably missed it because it came out in 2010…. for the Genesis! Pretty cool story really..

      • Crimson_Cloud

Hmm… well, in any case it’ll come out for ps3 on the psn no doubt? Gonna buy it then. ˇˇ

  • No Italian language?! Screw this!!

Jokes aside, seems an interesting game.

  • Fox

So hard to figure out which platform to get the game on–PC, WiiU, PS4, I just can’t make up my mind.

Well, probably PS4 just because it has the dreaded “no games” thing going.

next gen is here. #dreamcast #never4get
