Mega Man Developer Announces Azure Striker Gunvolt For Nintendo 3DS

By Sato . March 6, 2014 . 10:09pm

Update: Gameplay details available here.

Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune has been busy with the ongoing development of Mighty no. 9,  but it looks like he’s also working on a new side-scrolling action game for Nintendo 3DS. The game is called Azure Striker Gunvolt, and is being developed by Mega Man and Mighty No. 9 developer Inti Creates.

After a brief introduction by Inafune in the trailer above, the first look at the game starts at the 0:35 mark of the video, with footage of the game’s hero Gunvolt taking on different villains like “The Wormhole Maker Melac,” “The Explosive Rage: Daytona” and more, using his lightning abilities to zap them.

In case you’re wondering about Inti Creates, aside from Mighty No. 9, they developed Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, and are also involved with Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.

Azure Striker Gunvolt will be released this summer on the Nintendo eShop for 3DS in Japan. The game was announced at the ongoing Bitsummit conference.

  • Rudy Soto

Oh man, this is pretty cool. I appreciate the graphics, reminds me of the good ol’ MMZ days.

    • AfroMessiah

I never get tired of that style. Game looks awesome so I hope it gets localized. The boss fight with Melac looks awesome!

      • GH56734

Considering they bothered to sub the official trailer, I’d wager they are not against the idea.

      • Hound

“ESRB rating pending” at the end of the trailer just about guarantees it for the US. Most of the English names (including the one for the game being called “Azure Striker”) aren’t direct translations either.

Since the english bit at the end of the trailer also says “Summer 2014” and “Nintendo E-Shop,” that’s probably when and where it’ll be released.

    • Nanaki

Seeing the character jump and shoot instantly reminded me of Megaman Zero—I’m really excited for this, and I’m hopeful we’ll see it here in the west

      • natchu96

All he needs is the ability to make swords out of lightning as well and we’re set.

And yeah I want this now.

        • Guest

yes! he should really need a Lightning Saber! pls Inti Create and Keiji Inafune make it happen!

    • TheGioG

Keiji Inafune intends to strike us right in the nostalgic feels…
And it’s working so damn well right now. This man is a goddamn champion, he’s keeping our childhoods alive. :’)

      • GH56734

He’s keeping his integrity and a standard of quality for games. I’m happy his creative juices are unrestrained nowadays: surpassing the hallmark of excellence that is Megaman isn’t that far-fetched dream when you see what they are coming up with.
Now, if he could get in touch with the departed geniuses behind Gotcha Force, BoF, RE, maybe also convince poor Iga of joining him if only for a collaboration (it’s not like similar things haven’t happened before) and experiment with new games in those genres with unique twists…
Comcept could become number 1 again, since they are among the few companies still not blinded by greed and adamant refusal to take risks aka innovating.

      • Mar Mar

Watching the trailer gave me a feeling that old school games are making a comeback.

This is clearly what we want. Not graphics, not arrow markers, not multiplayer or achievements. Just a proper video game.

        • Kari

          Even his pose is identical.

      • Ric Vazquez

    • Technically the same team, even the music. MMZ was created by inti creates. They’ve been one of my most favorite developers since then.

    • natchu96

So much MMZ vibes from the graphics, the attack animations, everything!!!

*still sad that MMZX is stuck as a cliffhanger forever*

We miss you Zero, may you legacy live on until the end of time T_T

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Anything Inti Creates is insta-buy for me! I’ll have to save my eshop money for this.

    • GH56734

Well, they made some average platformers for Namco for the DS..
the Keroro platformers (both of them) were good old klonoa action, but Doraemon was mediocre and bland (despite the graphical polish), and Bon-Bita was too short.

I’m happy they got in touch again with Inafune with this and No.9, and that J.J. Rocket iOS platformer starring a president that was withdrawn and everyone forgot.
What was their last collaboration from before 2012, again? Megaman ZX Advent… It was definitely for the best Inafune left Capcom.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

Last collaboration? Would that include Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 as well? MM10 was 2010 iirc

    • Did you get their 3DS naruto game and galgun too? I never got around to the former (downloaded the demo but haven’t tried it yet) but I actually did enjoy the latter from what I played so far, lol (basically just the Japanese PSN demo, which already covered the only girl I cared for anyways).

      • MrSirFeatherFang

doh, I forgot they made the Naruto game, I probably even made a comment on this site about getting it a long time ago lol

I’ve only played the Gal Gun demo as well.

  • Mind0105A

As soon as I finished watching that “Megaman dies at the end” movie, I find good news about an awesome looking game.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Why dont you guys just team up and form one team?

Because Comcept’s still working on Kaio

And Inti’s still working on Shantae Half Genie hero/Mighty Number 9

    • J_Joestar

Thought Kaio was finished but just in statis waiting for it’s anime for the typical cross media assault on Japanese kids.

  • Bakuryukun

Wow, I like the look of this so far.

  • Kazekage Gaara

…Inti awesome! Keiji Inafune?! FUCK YEAH!

  • Ferrick

    This. Looks. AWESOME!

though i wonder if there are other attack options like melee and the sort ?

  • Surf

    I love this man.

  • E15

As a fan of action side-scrolling. This looks Wonderous.

  • Arcana Drill

This makes me remember the Megaman Zero games, which means…. instant buy!

  • DragKudo

Gunvolt vs Beck Calling it now!

    • Guest

      Fuck. XD

    • GH56734

A crossover wouldn’t be unexpected, that’s for sure.

    • ..Maybe Mighty No. 9 and this game could take place in the same universe, albeit the difference is both timeline and location? Hehe.

      • Ni ~Algidus~

inb4 Gunvolt is set some hundred years after Mghty No.9

        • Now that’s a great twist from the timeline of its spiritual predecessor~!

      • J_Joestar

Would this be the beginning of a true Inafuneverse?

  • Namuro

That looks amazing! I don’t know too much about it, but I’m madly in love with this game already!

I love all the side-scrolling Rockman games, but I especially love the Zero series, which this one seems to be based on. The characters, the actions, the bosses… just the way I like it!

Simply put, the trailer gave me goosebumps when I watched it… I know it’s gonna be real good!

One thing, though. I wonder why the names of the girls didn’t match the katakana spelling. The game is also called “Azure Striker”, while the Katakana and the actual logo reads “Armed Blue”. Maybe it’s alternative titles for the localized version?

    • GH56734

Already seeing a subbed official trailer was a dead giveaway this one has localization plans in the cards. When they are not interested in localizing it they won’t even bother.
But then again, PS1 Popolocois games, and Ninokuni DS (for a while) had alternative English titles too around their reveal, but nothing came out of it.

  • Kroz

So Inafune is pretty much bringing back megaman AND megaman zero…..if he somehow brings back megaman legends. o_o

    • $1392518

It would be amazing, but ill feel bad about the fate of trigger. He is still stuck up there…

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

    • Heropon

Maybe He should Bring back EXE/Starforce too . I like that series

      • J_Joestar

Probably one thing at a time, but got to agree, hope he brings us some new series that have the same basic feel but with new ideas.

      • Kazekage Gaara

Battle Network was my fave :)

    • Lucky Dan

Kenji Inafune wanted Zero to the main character for the Mega Man X, I guess he got his wish in this game.

  • The art remind me of MM zero for GBA! Very interest with it!

  • Oh, man… This is like shades of Megaman Zero and ZX-ZXA combined~!

“When lightning strikes, a new legend will be born.”

This title along with Mighty No. 9, must say Legends indeed never die. They are just reborn.. Mightier~!

  • Suicunesol

    So it’s a male biribiri… and he’s even a psychic…

    Snazzy game title, though.

    • J_Joestar

can’t wait for the crossover fanart

  • Awesome, too bad it’s 3ds region locked. :/ Might have to buy a 3ds from japan now.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Its being released here…
But seriously though everyone seems to region lock their online storefronts.

Xbox Does it, PSN does it through the propietary memory cards being region locked, and Nintendo just locks the machine outright and doesnt bother with it

      • Didn’t see anything about it being released here, besides seeing the added subtitled edited in. lol But I do hope it’ll be released down here. :)

    • Kazekage Gaara

ENGLISH SUBS! nuff said now hope and pray.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

The ESRB logo is nuff said

    • 하세요

It’s clearly coming over here, just Japan first.

      • Hopefully it will. Wouldn’t want to go out and buy another 3ds. Was teased with the whole english subtitled edited into the trailer.

        • J_Joestar

it would be a really cruel tease otherwise if they subbed it for us to see and still wont let us have it.

        • Cravia887

It has an ESRB rating pending listed at the end of the trailer. IOW its coming to the USA.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu
    • Göran Isacson

I admit that you have a point: at least the stuff they show off makes it seem less speedy than the MMZ games. I am still interested because my thirst for that kind of gameplay is mighty and it has sprites, but I do hope it’s quicker and has more running than it looks like. Maybe during the bosses, considering their large and unpredictable attacks…

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        haha yeah.

Lol this game being slow made me come up with a use for a second screen to explain away a death mechanic since a true bullet hell game might get way to trial and errory

        • Göran Isacson

Oh? What would that be? Like say, you can jump “between screens” in order to dodge attacks, each screen being a different “level” so to speak?

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No, you try and complete the level and when you get killed your special ability activates and sends you through an alternate path on the bottom screen

            Ghost Switch.

  • GaiunxWolfenX

i can’t wait for this game!!!! it really looks like MMZ

  • And here I was starting to believe that my absolute THIRST for more games like Mega Man X/Zero would never be quenched in the slightest…. ;w;

I’ve been supporting Mighty No. 9 since the Kickstarter and still support it and look forward to it, but I have to be honest that this is now easily my most wanted Inafune game. I also find the character designs here to be more to my liking in comparison (clearly it’s by the same AMAZING artist who did the art for the zero series… I need that name).

  • Vash bane

interesting and it looks good got that feeling of megaman-ish gameplay.
(if this gets localized I would have to check it out)

  • Ciel

It’s like Zero! But he braided his hair! and is wearing Megaman’s suit!

  • Go2hell66

    all of my money

its like Ky Kiske got his own MMZ spinoff :p

  • Gael Summers

Boss music of “The Explosive Rage”

    • Lalum

      Rolling Staaaaaaaaaaart!

  • anthony apduhan

Hope this was announced at Nintendo E3…

  • z_merquise

Looks so cool! Glad to see some new 2D action game for a portable console.

  • MaskedHero99

    Wow now thats sick

  • ForteWily

You know, the one thing that I have liked about Keiji’s leave from Capcom… he basically set out to do what ever the fuck he wants. And for the most part, my disagreement with Might No. 9 aside, that has been mostly what he has been doing… something that I can respect.

  • NightzeroAX

    I love inti creates.

  • Looks like a spiritual successor for Megaman ZX and feels like a hybrid of Gunstar and Megaman. While it looks promising, i hope this game development does not hinder the progress for Mighty Number 9 or otherwise Inafune will lose his credibility

    • Hound

Having a few 2D side-scrollers in development at the same time probably won’t hurt anything, especially based on Inti’s track record (where around 3 are released yearly.) There’s still another year after this game’s release before Might No. 9 is expected.

  • Demeanor

Probably the coolest name I’ve ever heard for a videogame XD

    • Pedro Furtado

Then their marketing is great, since in the east it is named “armed blue gunvolt” or something

  • Ren Yuumei

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

This remind of Of Megaman ZX….I Hyped to the next power

    Must have a Anime counterpart

  • D. Collins

    Well im buying this!

  • Istillduno

Looks, good, but did they really have to spoil 2 of the bosses in the trailer?

Also won’t Sega have anything to say about Gay Tony?

    • 하세요

I don’t see it as spoiling as much as giving a small taste of what craziness to see. MM games are known for their memorable bosses, so a good selling point is showing a few to get the point of “these will be badass, too” across.

  • DuskSharkEX

    I’d buy it.

  • Original Maincharacter

Azure Striker = Blue Bomber MKII.

  • LustEnvy

This looks awesome enough to rebuy a 3DS. Wow.

  • ZnTxn

    Yeah, as a megaman fan, I like it. However, I’m still worried about the other game he announced a few years ago, the pirate penguin game. ;______;

    • J_Joestar

last i heard it was finished, but MAQL is holding it up to run parallel with an anime (which i don’t know when that is supposed to show up either).

  • FX102A

Looks like I’m not the only one seeing the Megaman Zero vibe.

Also cements the good taste of many fellow Siliconites that flock here.

    • J_Joestar

yeah, the MM Z/ZX vibe is clearly present and probably one of the biggest draws.

  • Kornelious

This looks Awesome, Needed a good 2d game on the 3ds (ironic huh lol), I can’t wait! :)

  • Ric Vazquez

The gameplay gives me such nostalgia…

    • For me, right in the nads.

  • Ric Vazquez

The only thing I didn ‘t like is that it’s eshop only, but I can deal with that.

    • J_Joestar

don’t mind as long as it is priced appropriately.

      • Ric Vazquez

        True that

  • Ni ~Algidus~

insta-buy. nuff said. I just hope the game is a little less slower than it seems to be

  • Kayhil Dimas

This game looks kick ass and the U.S. is getting it in the summer, day one for me.

    • J_Joestar

Did they say it was a global release in the summer?
      sweet if it is.

      • Kayhil Dimas

Kinda if you look at the trailer at the 2:20 mark the infos in English with a summer 2014 release and esrb rating pending , so I say it’s a safe bet.

        • J_Joestar

Ah, i noticed the English wording (just assumed it was the typical English looks cool thing Japan does sometimes) but not the ESRB thing, good to know, thanks.

  • Just yes…

  • Rogerrmark

  • DivinePhoenix69

This looks pretty awesome. I’ve been craving to play a MMZ-type of game and this looks really promising. Judging from the “ESRB Rating Pending” part at the end localization is pretty much guaranteed. Here’s to hoping we get it soon.

  • I’m blown away. Day 1!!!

  • kenshinx13

  • Beta

    Bringing Megaman back? Check. Bringing Megaman Zero back? Check. Bringing Megaman Battle Network back? PLEASE DO IT ;_;

    • J_Joestar

he can only handle so many projects at a time XD

      • Says you! Bring back Battle Network! In any form! Even the Star Force games were pretty decent, so I wouldn’t mind that, either!

  • Brian Carty

“Azure Striker” haha. I look forward to future games by Inafune using cerulean and navy. And robin’s egg, sapphire, ultramarine, indigo, and periwinkle. And maybe hooloovoo!

Jokes aside, looks neat. I like the idea of the lightning rods letting you attack multiple enemies at once. Also, I half expect an announcement in the next 6 months of a companion anime.

  • O____O Love at first sight.

  • xe7en

HOLY SHIT! The graphics is totally a throw back! Definitely can tell it’s a much faster paced action platforming than its ancestors. I can’t wait for this to drop.

  • mojack411

Looks pretty damn slick. I want my hands on this game right now.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

It’s basically a new Megaman X game, except your character doesn’t wear a helmet.

  • DarthSithZero

Perfect. I got a 3DS a couple of days ago, now I care about 3ds news.

  • Spirit Macardi

Is he done with that game about the penguin pirate? I never even saw anything about that game being released.

    • D-Omen

A while ago he said the game is complete but Marvelous AQL won’t publish it for the time being.

  • Looks interesting, but side-scrolling, electric stuff makes me want a new Pulseman game. (And thinking of GF making a new Pulseman also makes me want another Drill Dozer.)

  • Captain Levi

Keiji Inafune is just a god.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      And a hypocrite :P

      • Captain Levi

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

The Vita is a machine for game creators.
The 3DS is one for business men!

          • Captain Levi

            Mmh, you know what?

Maybe he’s a hypocrite and such things – but the important thing is one:

If he keeps to do good games it’s ok.

If he starts to make bullsh%&! games like almost everyone, well, may I start to throw s%&!t at him too.

None is a saint after all.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            That’s the right attitude :P

  • Nanaki

It as if these new games are like the spiritual successors who have managed to pick up themselves up and out of the rubble of the crumbled towers of hope. Inti Creates and Keiji Inafune are definitely doing their fans a huge favor by giving them and those also interested a chance to experience what came before but in an entirely different light.

  • TheExile285

    Day one.

  • Chardo

Inti Creates brought us Zero and ZX / advent, hence the similarity, Ive waited around 6 years for this, this feels like a stronger spiritual successor to Zero/ZX while mighty 9 feels like a successor to older megaman, Im happy for both.

  • Aristides

This looks pretty awesome :P however I’m a bit worried, isn’t Inafune working on too many games at the same time? 0-o

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

He has 5 of them going doesnt he? Yaiba, Kaio, Gunvolt,MN9 yeesh

  • The Watcher

The image at 2:25 would make a pretty sweet Wall Scroll

  • TheAnswerisback

WOW this is amazing it plays exactly like megaman zero and zx and boy did I love the gameplay for those games ……………3ds can have mighty no 9 give ps vita this game lmao but seriously its great now that he’s not with capcom he is back in full swing with new ideas but keeping the gameplay we all love

  • Hector Velar

Keiji Inafune you are the man, thank you.

  • 하세요

Sure, I’ll bite day one. Summer, eh.

  • Nanajana

I wasn’t really sure about the game till I saw the DASH.

Does that make sense? I felt all better after watching the Dash animation/movement because it was literally the same as the Zero series.

  • Shaun Huseman

Ok, while I like these kinds of games, why do people praise Inafune so much? He talks of innovation in the games industry yet all he is doing is making games with the mega man formula.

    • Probably the “innovation” he speaks of has more to deal with the idea of him making games by his own standards, ‘that’ in a way, feels like innovation since he’s not catering to “the man” anymore (capcom).

He’s not focusing on how many copies the game will sell, but how fun it is to actually play the game. The fun sell’s itself, not following a ‘formula’ that’ll get the game sold faster for X amount of copies in Y quarter or Z fiscal year blah-blah… I mean let the companies with the $ $ for eyeballs worry about that stuff, I just wanna play some games; which to me, is what he’s making now.

      • Shaun Huseman

I can see where you get that because he definitely has talkec about how the japanese business aspect of game development is run, and I agree with him completely on those points, but I could swear I remember him talking trash about the types of games Japanese companies make as well, which is where I find him sorta hypocritical.

  • epy

This looks so good. It’s been a long time since a trailer got me excited for a game.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

Nice! But just how many video games is Inafune developing now?

    • Thus far, we know of:

      Soul Sacrifice Delta (out soon)
Soul Sacrifice 2 (presumably, since Delta isn’t 2)
      YAIBA (out soon)
      Mighty No. 9

  • Kari

“In case you’re wondering about Inti Creates, aside from Mighty No. 9, they developed Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, and .”… How about the whole Mega Man Zero series..

  • UnderstandingIndustry

Looks great. BUT. Is this what they have been spending my Mighty No.9 money on??!!

    • doubleO7

No? They’re probably spending your Mighty No.9 money on Mighty No. 9.

      • UnderstandingIndustry

probably? you don’t seem too sure.

        • doubleO7

You’re reading too much into my choice of words. Since I don’t work for Comcept I can’t be 100% certain, but Its a pretty reasonable assumption that the money you coughed up for MN9 is going to the development of MN9, and not some other game they may be working on.

        • 하세요

It sounds like he was developing this long before No.9, as the progress is obviously much further than his kickstarter for No.9 even started.

    • It crossed my mind; like why would they need Mighty No. 9 to be funded if they have another game in the pipe line. But I think that after the success of the Kickstarter, maybe they got on many people’s radar, including business men who realised the potential the company has, and thus poored resources into this project.

  • Yan Zhao

    God bless Inafune, God bless.

  • This looks pretty good. I’d buy it if it ever comes to NA.

  • Daniel

Mega Man Zero…you forgot it. Tough game i still havent beat the collection i have on ds

  • Weren’t they working on Mighty Number 9 instead?
