Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation Bursts Past 1 Million Downloads In Japan

By Spencer . March 11, 2014 . 11:02pm

Bandai Namco Games announced Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation surpassed one million downloads in Japan. That’s less than Tekken Revolution, which has more than 2.5 million downloads worldwide, but the one million mark for Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation is a record for a domestic free to play PlayStation 3 game.

The majority of the Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation players are dudes in their 30s and 40s.

In March 2013, Bandai Namco also released the game in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. No plans have been announced for a Western release.

I do wish this game was better than it is. You don’t really need skill to do well in it. You just need a better suit and better parts so you can just one shot lower level people in a single melee combo as they fail to put much of a dent into you

Yeah, i was also a little disappointed, i find Virtual On a lot better typically…

But oh well, it’s Gundamn and it’s free I suppose… Sad

I’m actually kicking a moderate amount of butt with the Zaku Tank and Guntank which might as well be the worst suits in the game and I’m not even using parts.

Get into a match with medium level units. See how it goes.

    Tragic indeed.

    • DaiRaiOh

Play it. It’s not tragic at all. Seriously, game is just not good.

    UC level of young.

Considering how few F2P (for a limited time + restrictions) PS3 games there are on Japan’s PSN, I’m honestly not surprised that Gundam has more downloads in Japan.

Anyone that seriously enjoys Tekken online can simply play any other Tekken game and not have to be locked out after playing a few matches or grind their favorite characters’ stats. With Gundam games, the gameplay can be rather up in the air in terms of quality, so more people are likely to get curious.

F2P isn’t a player-friendly model, nor does it ever mean “more fun than a retail game.”

    • neocatzon

To make it short, F2P is still young. Currently, there’s no execution that can satisfy both players and devs (throw publisher and media here too). Sometimes there’s a case like Path of Exile but it’s also may not satisfy some people.

In the case of those two games you mentioned, maybe they’ve done their role to attract curious people and extra bit of ingame transactions.

1 million in Japan is a huge number nowadays. but Playing this game since 2012, 1 million downloads does not paint the whole picture as to how much millions of yens BB Studio and BandaiNamco made with ingame transactions. And there are many great American players logged into this game too every day. This game is addicting as Minecraft.
BB Studio has perfected the 3rdPS game mechanic in this one. Its gameplay mevhanic is very deep & unique no other game plays like it. And tho the gameplay needs mastery its really fun once you learn strategy. Japanese game makers liie Namco still has the.mojo when it comes to gameplay. Cant wait for the PS4 version.
