Persona Q Has Dungeon Mapping And F.O.E Enemies Like Etrian Odyssey

By Sato . March 11, 2014 . 11:52am

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will be mixing elements from the Etrian Odyssey series with characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4. Famitsu teases some new features that will be detailed in this week’s issue of the magazine.

According to the report, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will have a map-making feature similar to the ones in the Etrian Odyssey games, where you can draw the layout of the dungeons on the 3DS touch screen to help find your way around.

Additionally, the game will contain “F.O.E.” monsters, and when you come across them, you’ll have to decide whether it would be best to run, or maybe try to see if you can take them down, similar to tough monsters you may have encountered during  Etrian Odyssey.

Famitsu says you might get something special for defeating these tough F.O.E.s.

More details will be available when this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine is published. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will be released this fall in North America for Nintendo 3DS.

Not surprised, but “special” thing you get from the FOE enemies is interesting

    • Hound

“Special” as in typical Elizabeth/Theo/Margaret rewards for questing, I’d imagine. Especially since Etrian Odyssey had similar quests.

    F.O.E! F.O.E! F.O-

    *is shot*

But in all seriousness etrian oddessy is by far my most played game on 3DS. Up there with Fire Emblem in my book. The only thing I hope is that they don’t break up the gameplay with too many story segments.

    • AkuLord3

Since this ISN’T EO game, it will since that’s the point especially with the type of story Persona Q will have, probably not as much as P3/P4…maybe as much FES Answer. Have to wait and see.
But yeah Etrian Odyssey series SOO GOOD…sure hope EO5 is gets greenlighted soon~

  • chroma816

It really is just E.O + Persona characters.

Not that this is a bad thing in the slightest.

    • Kazekage Gaara

More like E.O + Persona Story and Characters :3

  • nonscpo

Having played Etrian Odyssey Millenium Girl, the map drawing is a fun gimmick but after awhile you forget its there. The gameplay must trump any gimmick for persona to pull it off.

    • Shane Guidaboni

You don’t “forget” it’s there; you finish mapping your floors, so there’s no reason to continue mapping a finished map.

  • Amagidyne

Even in my Persona games, F.O.E.

    • Hound

      F.O.E! F.O.E!

    • Warren

About those F.O.E.s…can you explain why a mutated cherub child is riding on a dominatrix slave type horse? Are they just taking things they find in their closet and modify them into monsters?

      • Amagidyne

It looks like an amalgamation of two enemy types from the P3 and P4 games. The Cherub-types and the Jotun (I think?) types. But most of the enemies in those games looked like bizzare junk modifications anyway, so…

  • Damn. I was actually hoping that the map making and F.O.E. monsters features wouldn’t be in this game. Oh well. It’s not going to ruin the experience. I love the Etrian Odyssey and Persona games, so I’m going to love this no matter how it turns out.

    • Jero

I think this game will have an auto mapping option like Etrian Odyssey untold, foes are OK I guess, at least you can avoid them if you keep an eye on their patron.

  • Strain42

Hey, this is slightly off topic, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm something for me. The MegaTen wiki says that the P3MC is actually being called Minato Arisato in this one. Has that been confirmed yet? And if so, where? I checked the trailers but I don’t recall seeing that as his name anywhere, but I may have missed it.

    • Luke Blackwood

No, he is actually being called “P3 Hero”, just like Narukami is being called “P4 Hero”.

Also, his canon name is, according to the movies, Makoto Yuuki, not Minato Arisato (Minato was actually his manga name, just like Narumaki’s was Souji Seta)

      • Strain42

Yeah, that’s why I was so confused to see the wiki say they were going with his manga name, especially after they gave him a film name. So in other words the MegaTen wiki is just wrong then? Cool, thanks. That’s kind of a relief, actually.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up simply going with Makoto Yuki for the final game.

      • Jason

I, too, have not watched the trailers, which is why I think that he’s going to be called “P3 Hero” When you don’t name him.

      • Hound

Actually. In the P3 Protag video it says 有里 湊 which is read Arisato Minato.

Where did you see otherwise O.o?

    • Kireek

The earlier trailers had his name as “Minato Arisato”, which is why the Megaten wiki says that. All of the later trailers refer to him simply as “P3 Hero”. So either they were just using Minato as a placeholder name and decided to change it later on, or you’ll actually be able to set his name in-game.

  • AlteisenX

A combination between EO and Persona… Damn. I’m a little hyped. Just… okay a lot of hype is built up now.

  • Skeptika Crediblus
  • ecoutercavalier

    My excitement just doubled.

  • laurenhiya21

Ah that makes sense. It started to sound pretty similar to EO so I thought that they might be using the same engine… Which I certainly don’t mind since I love me some EO :>

  • Shane Guidaboni

YES. This is getting better and better.

  • Jero

Basically it’s Etrian Odyssey: Persona, it seems the game is more EO than persona, I enjoy both so yay for me.

    • ManSizeSextet

As far as dungeon crawling goes, this is true – and the game is better for it since EO has much superior dungeon crawling mechanics. But this very article that this info is from also talks about events which is more of a Persona thing. It’ll definitely have a lot more text and dialogue than a regular EO game.

  • Zer0faith

You had my curiosity… but now you have my wallet.

  • Zoozbuh

Ewww… I may be in the minority here, but I’m really not a fan of the overly complex/convoluted features and hardcore difficulty of the EO games. (I possibly could have described that better but meh…)

I had high hopes for this one, since it’s the first time the series has appeared on a Nintendo console (let alone a handheld), but I guess I’ll just be waiting for P5. No big deal, plenty of other decent games coming out.

    • $18114340

Etrian Odyssey is considered “convoluted”? Aside from the first and maybe the second, the games have made stretches in user-friendliness with every installment. I’d go as far as to say that Etrian Odyssey Untold is a pretty accessible game, the auto-mapping is more robust than ever and the game isn’t particularly difficult compared to the rest of the genre in general, nor is it anal about specific esoteric mechanics that are never explained to you like Square RPGs are. Actually, Etrian Odyssey on the whole is pretty good about explaining every little thing to new players.

      What’s so convoluted about EO?

  • CozyAndWarm

And after SMT, Persona devours the dev resources of yet another Atlus series I love… don’t get me wrong, I’m still super excited for PQ. But the difficulty’s probably gonna be toned down compared to what the EO devs are known for, and I hope this doesn’t become a trend where Persona just eats the popularity of EVERY Atlus series, like it already did to SMT. Eh, we’ll see.

    • $18114340

As much as I’m looking forward to this, I’m confident that this is really a one-time thing for the EO team. I think the reason why they might not be working on the next EO right away is because Untold came out relatively close to Legends of the Titan. They probably don’t want to release successive installments too close together, so this is a way to introduce Persona fans to EO’s brand of gameplay as well as to hold EO fans over until the next one.

  • Morningstar

Well I was wondering how the Reaper would be in this game, and I think he’ll be a FOE

  • Hey I think I got some Etrian in my Persona … Or is the other way around? Either way I’m looking forward to this (^.^ )

  • Finally understand the reason behind releasing Untold. They wanted to experiment dungeon crawling and story-heavy elements before combining their two most beloved franchises. Keeping a close watch on this game now.

  • I’m a big Persona fan, but I’m really not fond of EO’s battle system… I was hoping it wouldn’t be like this, but… looks like this might be a pass for me.

    • ManSizeSextet

Taking away aesthetics (because Persona is a lot flashier) the battle system in EO is more in-depth than Persona 3/4’s relatively simple attack the enemy weakness -> enemy down -> leading to all out attack -> rinse repeat flow or the endurance tests that are their boss battles. Battles in EO present more elements of strategy and planning, making battles feel more dynamic, challenging and rewarding. Each to his own though.

      • I’m not writing off the game completely… just that I’m not completely understood on EOs battle mechanics… maybe trying out the Millennium Girl demo will help.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

Knowing Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei, this game could be one of the most challenging things Atlus ever made. However, I believe they made this for newcomers to the franchise rather than hardcore players.

  • Maia Kasoya

Even in a Persona game, F.O.E!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    F.O.E F.O.E!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • benhofb

Eh, I don’t know how I feel about this. I mean, I thought the F.O.E. system in EO worked well and whatnot, so I am not to worried about that feature. But the whole mapping system is just so…tedious to me. But I dunno. Perhaps there will be a auto-map feature, or maybe I’ll just get used to it, heh.

    • Kelohmello

There was an auto map feature in the last Etrian Odyssey, so in all likelihood there will be in this.

      • benhofb

Oh, really? Huh, great news then!

  • GOLD

i have only played p4g but im getting p3 to prepare for this game

  • Rogerrmark

I love how this is becoming an Etrian Odyssey V Beta more and more each passing day. Love both series.

    • Guillermo Oliva III

Yay, I am not the only one that see it that way and I call mine “A sneak-peek of EOV gameplay” XD

  • celery

I had a feeling these features would be in the game (mostly the map-making, since it’s on the 3DS and that would be a perfect way to utilize the bottom screen).
I’m probably the only one who feels this way, but I actually love Etrian Odyssey much more than Persona, so to me, the more EO-esque stuff they confirm, the more hyped I get!
I can’t wait to see what special stuff you get for defeating the F.O.E.’s in this game!

  • FlobotingIt

Wait a minute. I haven’t played the EO games, so I’m not certain. Does this mean that I have to MAKE a map? Or do I just make notes on it?
