Why Square Enix Made Final Fantasy X-2

By Spencer . March 18, 2014 . 1:00pm

While sequels and prequels to numbered Final Fantasy games are common, it was Final Fantasy X-2 that started the trend. When Siliconera met with Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase, we asked him what it was like pitching the concept of making a Final Fantasy sequel to Square Enix.

“Traditionally, we would make a new world for each numbered Final Fantasy game. For [Final Fantasy X-2], it was a unique first time trial because we made such a rich story for Final Fantasy X and we wanted to build upon it. We didn’t want the story to end at X,” Kitase reminisced.

“The name of the game, Final Fantasy X-2… initially the name was not accepted in our internal meetings,” he revealed. “Actually, in our staff meetings it was disapproved once! Instead of making it Final Fantasy XI because it was a story that built upon Final Fantasy X we wanted to call it Final Fantasy X-2.”

Final Fantasy X’s story zooms in on Tidus and Yuna compared to say Final Fantasy VI where every character is a protagonist. Since Kitase worked on both titles, we asked him about the difference between creating a game with an ensemble cast compared to a solo journey.

“In the past, we would often focus on multiple protagonists. This style has its pros, but for Final Fantasy X we wanted specifically to focus on Tidus and Yuna to create a love story and show their inner emotions. The direction we took was to create a richer and more compelling story focused on these two characters,” said Kitase.

I asked Kitase if he were to write another Final Fantasy X story, but without Tidus and Yuna in it, who he would choose to focus on.

Kitase laughed, and replied, “There is a story about Auron and Braska who go on journey before the protagonists of Final Fantasy X. It would be interesting to focus on those characters as a contrast to the young and energetic Tidus and Yuna.”

An Auron/Braska/Jecht prequel would be the best.

    • God

You know, i liked how X ended, and i hated the fact that they where making a sequel… but now i almost want there to be an X-3 so they can retcon a certain shity novel…

  • Unlimax

I think the reason why this game been made is that they want to try how the Jpop musician aspect works on FF ( Specifically for Yuna ) , Considering Koda Kumi was involved to do her own music video for the game as if she’s Yuna singing on the stage , Its totally shows that the game made to target the Jpop crowd .

  • Steven Higgins

This may not be the place for this but I’m really starting to hate Square. This is 3rd time I’ve pre-ordred a hard copy of one of their games and not gotten the bonus I was promised.

    • Testsubject909

Is that directly from their store or from another company such as, say, Gamestop?

Just asking because that helps to determine exactly where your hate should go.

I’m not saying I have anything against someone hating Squeenix. I’m just saying, if you must hate. Hate for the right reasons and thus towards the right targets.

      • Steven Higgins

They were from several places. The first one was form Gamestop, the second was directly from them, and the third, Amazon.
There’s only one common denominator, they were all Square-Enix products, so that’s were the hate should go IMOP.

        • Testsubject909

          Hmm… Carry on.

          • Steven Higgins

Well, guess I can’t hate them now. turns out the Garb was EU exclusive, but announced on the NA blog without that little detail.

          • Testsubject909

    • Slickyslacker

Free pre-order bonuses (such as the LE of this game) are usually unavailable to those that pre-order closest to the release date.

      • Steven Higgins

It wasn’t a “pre-order” elusive though, It was “all first run copies” which logically would include ALL pre-orders as well as the entire first shipment.

    • César H. Sandoval

When did you pre-ordered The game? I noticed a couple of days ago that the Limited Edition bonus was already out of stock on Amazon.

    • I think it’s because they use Digital River? Which, yeah, they’re known for effing up (Ni no Kuni had a huge debacle).

      • Testsubject909

I am now worried for my retail copy of Drakengard 3.

        • SerendipityX

Its already canceled. But in all seriousness I’m still pissed at them for canceling my LR CE b/c of “lol glitch”. Digital River sucks.

        • To be honest? You should be. I mean, I lucked out with my copy of NnK, but a lot of people got shorted, and the problem was not handled well either (by DR or Bamco).

If your copy gets to you well and timely, yay! But if not, be prepared to give them a piece of your mind. Just as a heads up.

  • Masa

Auron, Jecht and Braska, i would love to see that.

  • Slickyslacker

They made X-2 to expand on the story of Spira, but…everyone knows how well that went.

If they were to make X-3 (which has been officially turned down now), it should have just been the “Spira’s backstory” game, featuring Braska, Auron, and Jecht’s journey, and maybe even foraying into the world’s connection to VII’s universe.

    • Godmars

Naw, it was the Charlie Angles thing. A need for the director to take things in a less serious direction.

And really, the ghost of a thousand year old boyfriend who wanted to end the world because his girlfriend had died was just hilarious…

    • DeathDias71

Not sure what you are implying. X-2 was financially and critically well received. It may not have sold the numbers as FFX did originally but that is normal. Most sequels never make the same amount as the original.

X-3 was never on the table. It was only speculated because of the added radio drama to the HD collection, but a proper sequel has not been discussed at Square-Enix. They have already officially commented as such in response to what people were saying of the radio drama.

  • I think the more important question is why they made FFXIII-2/3???

    • Herok♞

They are fun games people enjoy?

      • Testsubject909

That’s a result which many would probably state as mixed results.

It’s not an actual answer to his question.

But then again, deviating away from an answer to his question which deviates from the subject of the article is in a way very fitting.

    • M’iau M’iaut

      Please keep on topic. Thanks.

    • Kaetsu

I’d say LR:FFXIII was the only they shouldn’t have made.

  • Nanaki

I just started up the HD Remaster disc. Oh my god the feels.

  • Quan Chi

If Tidus was a dream, how on earth can the his dad have completed a mission to become sin? That would mean the summons imagined someone to complete the process. Then what is the purpose of the real ppl doing it?

    • Testsubject909

He was a dream that was based on real events, basically an imperfect memory of events. Part of that and of who he was based off of is clarified in X-2.

      • Quan Chi

And Jecht STILL became sin. Since he is his dad, that would make him ‘fake’ too.

        • Testsubject909

There are problems with FFX’s story.

  • César H. Sandoval

Yeah SE, make the prequel with Auron, Yecht and Braska, you will have my money if so!

  • DS23

…because it was an expensive game to make and the wanted to recoup costs some more and did so by reusing assets a bit for a direct sequel? That’s probably the real reason. I liked both games back in the day.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Translation: “We were desperate for cash after the financial bomb that was The Spirits Within, so we quickly came up with a contrived reason to produce a sequel to X and reused all the assets we created for that game.”

    • Frozenbabylon

Haha. I just posted something like this. I should just delete that one and upvote you.

      • Testsubject909

        Deleting won’t mean anything.

The only thing you’ll be doing is removing your name from your post, making it a Guest post rather then one directly from your name.

Deleting doesn’t really work on Disqus…

    • Testsubject909

That’s a theory though. Not an actual confirmation. Your evidence is only coincidental as well.

      • Testsubject909

And I add the bit about your evidence pre-emptively because I’m quite well aware of all the bits of evidence anyone can put forth to support your theory.

It really is just coincidental evidence.

      • Tom_Phoenix

It may be a theory, but it’s supported by a fair amount of evidence. Granted, like you said, that evidence is coincidental or circumstantial, since no company is likely to ever directly confirm such things. But multiple coincidences at the same time start to form a pattern.

        • DeathDias71

Actually it is a combination of the two. The developers and the CEO’s of the company tend to have different agenda’s. The developers make the games, so the reasons here are purely legitimate. However the reason the project was green lit might indeed be because of the losses they suffered from The Spirits Within. X-2 reused the majority of the assets in the game, that meant less money spent on design and artwork except for what would be new material obviously.

So while the ones running the company did it because it made good financial sense, the developers are telling the truth here. When you create a world with such a deep background that they created like Spira…as a creator…you can’t help but want to go back to it and stay just a little bit longer in a world you helped develop.

          • natchu96

I know I can probably pull out a whole story over several months from one daydream if I liked the daydream enough. Willing to believe that.

    • Seems more legit explained like this.

  • Frozenbabylon

“We needed a lot of money really really really fast after Spirits Within tanking as bad as it did. So we decided to reuse a bunch of assets, slapdash a story together and throw it out.”

    • Kaetsu

I like how you just copied the comment below you lol.

      • Frozenbabylon

I didn’t read the comments before making mine. My mistake. Haha.

        • Kaetsu

Sometimes I’ll do the same thing. I usually look before I post now so I don’t look silly :P

  • Ricardo C

So basically its X-2’s fault we have 2 unnecessary sequels to XIII because they didn’t want their waifu Lightning to be shoved away in the corner by all the hate she got at the time?
Meh, I like X2 anyways if it were true. I ignore the hate calling it “Charlies Angels with Final Fantasy characters”. So are those screenshots in game accurate or are they BS shots like Square has been doing for Kingdom Hearts all these years (especially 1.5 had my hopes up)?

    • Testsubject909

I see no reason to hate it because it’s Charlie’s Angels with Final Fantasy.

Personally that’s why I like it. That and better gameplay then FFX.

      • SerendipityX

Pretty much this. I’m REALLY hoping Square was joking about not being able to buy FFX-2 separately.

        • Testsubject909

Eh… I’m gonna go order the Asian version of it if it ends up being confirmed that the text is in English.

Because that means I’ll have a physical version of FFX-2.

And I really am only interested in having FFX-2 for my Vita…

And I also prefer having a physical copy so to not strain my Vita’s memory card.

          • SerendipityX

Same here and I just checked well what do you know you can’t buy FFX-2 seperately. ARRGH, this probably the stupidest inconvenience I’ve ever had.

          • Testsubject909

They’ve lost a sale from me for the Vita, at least in the NA region.

The Asian region though just might gain one more sale of their FFX-2 game.

          • Testsubject909

That and when I look at the cover art for FFX-2’s Asian version.

Boy oh boy does it look ever so sweeter.

      • Ricardo C

In case you got the wrong impression, I dont hate it because its been called that for years lol. Im a fan of Charlies Angels myself and this was pretty nice. I love the CG cutscenes in that game (for obvious reasons) but…. Yuna’s head shape freakes me out a bit sometimes in that game O_O

    • Godmars

And ironically I’ve come to hate Lightning – and Square – because she’s been so forced on the public. Because two more games were made which featured her and her group if not their world.

FF10-2 I got over because it was just a one time and forgettable thing. Was even funny to an extent. But FF13 they – Square – just wouldn’t let it got. Kept talking it up like a success which did no wrong.

      • Haunting Horror

That’s exactly why I have come to hate Lightning. I didn’t really have anything against her in XIII and I admit I felt for her where her sister was concerned, but how they did her in XIII-2 and XIII-3 like she is the most ultimate thing and making her a god in all, but name only and a “dress-up barbie doll” is really is what got me to hate her. Cause like you said she feels so forced down our throats…. And also her personality is all over the place like she has none of her own, like they keep changing it to try and get people to think she’s the best (again being forced down our throats). The obsession for her is very alienating. She’s spoilt by who created her and a character like that is always annoying.

Also X-2, I didn’t like it, but I have to admit it is forgettable even if I think it destroyed Yuna’s character. Hey, if it wasn’t her, but someone else then I probably wouldn’t have disliked it like I do. And I think that’s what alienated a lot of fans. If only they didn’t change Yuna to that I doubt there would have been as much hate.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Group notice guys take the posting without thinking elsewhere. Thanks.

    • Testsubject909

Eh… This is gonna be pretty usual of me to interject like this but.

I’d personally say, define the perimeters a bit more clearly or specify not to mindlessly bash because the latter could still be seen as being on-subject as it’s a commentary on the article’s content. Which is… pretty much on subject.

Because really, I don’t think the issue is about veering off subject so much so as it is just a matter of civility.

  • Adriaan den Ouden

“There is a story about Auron and Braska who go on journey before the protagonists of Final Fantasy X. It would be interesting to focus on those characters as a contrast to the young and energetic Tidus and Yuna.”

Oh my god please just do this already! I have literally wanted that game since I finished Final Fantasy X over a decade ago. There is so much backstory there to build a game on, and Auron and Jecht are two of the most popular characters in FFX. Just friggin’ do it!
